As we begin the new year many citizens will be making large purchases. Many are looking for that once in a lifetime deal that seems too good to betrue. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office Auto Theft Unit in partnership withABTPA would like the citizens to think twice before purchasing a vehicle onthe Internet. The more popular sites that are being sought after for thesepurchases are Craigslist and Offer Up. Unfortunately, many citizens arebeing preyed upon by these common thieves and scam artist using thesesites. It also appears that their tactics are working, due to the increase inreported losses. Although you take the time to follow these steps, it’s noguarantee that the vehicle is not stolen. We only ask that you take theseextra steps to help safe guard your purchase.

√ No Title, No Deal.

√ Verify the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) on the Dash with theMylar Sticker on the driver side door area. Look for any tamperingor inconsistencies.

√ Absolutely no hand written VIN on the title/paper work.

√ Look for any misspellings and type errors.

√ Check for lack of “Document numbers” on the title.

√ Verify the title by an unbiased third party of your choice, if possible.

√ Avoid the backyard and parking lot sales transactions.

√ Insist on taking a picture of the sellers’ identification and the sellerthemselves.

√ If the above steps cannot be verified at the time of purchase, walkaway.

√ If you have questions, contact your local authorities.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, then usually it is.

December 2015 Officer of the MonthOfficer Jason Jones with K9 Chico

Officer Jason Jones with K9 Chico

Officer Jason Jones began his career with League City Police Department in 2007 where he was assignedto the Patrol Division. He is a Field Training Officer, TCOLE Instructor, EVOC Instructor and also aBike Patrol Officer. In October 2012 Officer Jones joined the K9 Division and was partnered with K9Chico. K9 Chico is an eight year old German shepherd dog trained and certified in marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin narcotics odors. Officer Jones and K9 Chico have been acertified narcotic detection team and police service dog team since December 2012. They receivedadditional certification as a certified narcotic detection team and police service dog team throughDogs for Law Enforcement (DLE) in December 2014.

On 10-19-2015 Officer Jones initiated a traffic stop for a defective brake light. He identified the male driver and returned to his patrol car to perform aDriver’s License check. On the return Ofc Jones found that the subject driverwas out on bond for a murder and was due in court the next day. Uponreturning to the vehicle Officer Jones could smell air freshener as if it hadjust been sprayed, which is often used as an attempt to mask the odor ofnarcotics. Officer Jones asked the subject driver for consent to search thevehicle and the subject driver denied the request. Officer Jones then hadthe subject driver get out of the vehicle and subsequently deployed K9Chico for an exterior sniff. K9 Chico alerted to the presence of narcotic odoron the outside of the vehicle. K9 Chico was then deployed into the car’sinterior where he alerted on a compartment right above the ash tray.

The subject driver was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle wasconducted and a baggie of marijuana was found right where K9 Chico alerted. A vial of PCP was foundin the driver seat between the seat back and bottom. A loaded handgun as well as 2 counterfeit $50bills and 1 counterfeit $100 bill was found in the glovebox of the vehicle. The subject driver wascharged with 2 felonies (Forgery and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1) and 1 misdemeanor(Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon).

For his service and dedication Officer Jones and K9 Chico will be presented a plaque and a gift at theAlumni board of directors meeting on Tuesday, December 1st. Blue Santa Came to Town

By Ana Rivera

Dec. 22, 2015.-The Lighthouse Charity Team, in conjunction with members of the CPAAA andother volunteers, put their efforts together, to make the “Blue Santa” event a success, thisChristmas. The police department gathered donations from sponsors, and several agencies andhelp from the CPAAA and Krewe De Blue, to make it possible for the less fortunate children toreceive presents during this Christmas season. The lighthouse provided the space to receive, sort, organize, and wrap over 4,000 presents. The donation center received volunteers during 3days, to bring this project to fruition; they also gathered at the Roof Garden in the Strand, withother community supporters, for a barbecue fund, to raise money to buy toys for the “Blue Santa”.Officer Joey Quiroga organized the efforts and helped giving information to the donors andvolunteers. The program; officer Quiroga mentioned, the program may be expanding to meet theneeds of children with special needs throughout the year.

Last year as well, more than 4,000 toys were donated to underprivileged children. The namesof children were given by GISD teachers and administrators, social agencies, and some walk-insthat proved to have low-income.

This event was a success, and it is another endeavor from the Police Department, and theLighthouse Charity team, to help our community.

Christmas Parade

By Ana Rivera

December 19, 2015.- The members of the Krewe De Blue, the Medics, Sgt. Destin Sims, andofficer Joey Quiroga, as well as the Firefighters Department, and representatives of some privatebusinesses, to rejoice upon this season and bring the spirit of Christmas to the GalvestonCommunity, especially the children.

At about 6:45pm, the temperature went down to the 50’s, and a few scattered souls were strollingdown the Seawall, Sgt. Sims kept on encouraging the GCPAAA members, because their effortsseemed in vain, since there were no people to cheer, give beads or candy to.

The parade started a little bit late. At about 7:15pm, the parade started on its way to the Seawall. All of a sudden, we could see people swarming from the nearby streets, cheerful and all cuddledup.

The members of the GCPAAA and Krewe De Blue had all gathered, in the “Paddy Wagon”, in theirjail prison costumes. The fun started, the faces of children and adults rejoiced with the colorfulbeads and candy that was thrown to them, right and left.

It was a short parade, it started on 41st. and Seawall, and ended on 25th. We then turned andwent back all satisfied. Our efforts, time and suffering the cold weather had been worth. Theparade was a success. Maybe next year, more people will know about it and fill the streets somemore.
