Notes From the Lion’s Den

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith… --- Hebrews 12:1-2

On any given Sunday morning just as the music for the distribution of communion begins, I usually hear a quiet, internal voice whisper, “Look! Look at the great cloud of witnesses!” And there I see faces that shine in the light of the Spirit reflecting awareness, intention and practice. “Kindred spirits”, “community” and “relations” are words that whisper along. I add the faces I see to my memory file called “the great cloud of witnesses”.

I heard those whispers twice recently reminding me that this sense of community and relationship extends far beyond the walls of our sanctuary.

The pastor from our church in Santa Cruz called a couple of months ago. He had agreed to open his home to a former parishioner from Indiana who was going attend the Plein Air Air Conference at the Monterey Convention Center, but he had just given the Santa Cruz church notice that he has accepted a call elsewhere and “would you please consider allowing a fellow Disciple to stay at your home for a week”? Rick Wilson, a nationally-recognized Plein Air artist showed up at my home with a vintage Martin Guitar in hand. Turns out that Rick’s dad was a guitarist with Bill Monroe, the father of Bluegrass music. I soon realized that Rick inherited some musical talent from his dad and so a couple of the nights Rick was here we stayed up late and played our guitars and talked about church and talked about God. The morning he left, Rick gave me a gorgeous painting of our church building as a token of his gratitude. In the future, as I meditate upon the great cloud of witnesses, I will image Rick Wilson in the gathering.

These four extraordinary young people, and the volunteers that worked with them are also images I will see in my meditations upon the great cloud of witnesses

My Uncle Frank taught me years ago a simple prayer that has helped me open my heart to the great cloud of witnesses – with strong intent, with eyes wide open to whatever and whomever is around – to lift the arms high and softy speak these words: “All my relations!”

See you in church! Dan

Pastor Dan will be out of town May 15-26. The elders will be on call for pastoral concerns.

Niki, Angelina, Aaron and Alexander hopped into my van and we went on a road trip to Sacramento to be part of the Annual Gathering of our Regional Church. With great joy, I watched them mingle with youth from other churches and I watched adults from our broader faith community guide them and interact with them through the event.

The Chalice Closet by Linda Henderson

Have you seen all of the work going on around the Swann Building? As with any construction work, the question was “What will we find under the roof?” and the answer, as usual, is more work to be done… “dry rot” in the under wood causing an extension of the finish date for the roof to (hopefully) April 30th. The roofers, having a good view of the Parsonage roof, have pointed out that it will be in need of replacement in the near future. (Ken’s slogan, “Never ending, On Going”)

Now if that wasn’t enough, “dry rot” was found in the side stairs to the Swann Building second floor. Repair is underway.

Be prepared to see the Swann Building under a big tent real soon…..yes! Termites!

The Chalice Closet in the Swann Building opened April 8th. It has been very well received by the Community. It is, also, doing very well, considering hit and miss open days due to the on going building construction. Currently the Closet is open on Mondays and Fridays, 11am to 3pm. In order to be open, there is a desperate need for more volunteers. If you can help, even for a few hours, call Linda Henderson, Jean Saltsman or Pam Brydon.

The Blue Theology Task Force has a huge summer before them. Seven (7) Youth Groups from all over the country have registered to come and learn about “saving the ocean.” Check out the Blue Theology Program - Web Site – bluetheology.com.

Continued news from your Administrative Board next month.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed their tithes and offerings this past quarter, which so far have exceeded our original projection. The capital campaign budget was based on a

scaled back target. As was noted in the last newsletter, overall the campaign is still short of our original goal. We encourage all those who have pledged to the campaign to bring their

pledges up to date by its conclusion at the end of June.

A Heartfelt Thank You!!

I want to express my thanks to all o the Elders and to the members of this congregation who elected me to the Eldership for all of these years.  Being an Elder is, to me,  three things…..a privilege, an honor and a responsibility.  I appreciate having been given the opportunity to be these things.

When I was first nominated many years ,ago I thought all an Elder did was walk to the front of the church and say a communion or an offertory prayer.  Then one day a meeting was called and I thought “Oh! Now there are two things…..prayers and meetings.” But after that meeting I became aware of all that we did.

When I became more advanced in years, I became aware of the idea that probably several younger members of the church would really love to serve as an Elder.  At that point I decided to resign and let someone else have the honor of serving as an Elder.

So again, my thanks to the Elders, the congregation, and Pastor Dan for this privilege.
