WILLIAM E. FITzGERALD was the son of

a Great Lakes sea captain and shipbuilder

and later the president of Milwaukee Dry

Dock Company and manager of American

Shipbuilding Company. He and his wife, Jesse

Blackburn Fitzgerald, chose the crest of East

Lafayette Hill Road at 2022 East Lafayette Place

as the site for their home. The couple chose Ferry

and Clas, a prestigious architectural firm known

for many prominent homes and public buildings

including the Milwaukee Central Library and

the Captain Frederick Pabst Mansion, to design

their three-story, 6,158-square-foot Classical

Revival Georgian home. With four bedrooms

and five and a half bathrooms, and featuring five

fireplaces, the owners directed the contractors to

use only the best materials available.

At a cost of $15,000, construction of the

home began. However, after completion of the

foundation of the home and construction up to

the rafters, Mr. Fitzgerald met an untimely death

in 1902, leaving behind his widow and two

young sons, Edmund and William. While the

Fitzgerald’s time at this property near the shores

of Lake Michigan had ended, their story and

nautical ties did not.

Four years after his death, William’s close

friend, Capt. Denis Sullivan, commissioned a ship

to be built and named the W.E. Fitzgerald.

It became known as “Little Fitz” and traveled

the waters until it was scrapped years later.

Meanwhile, Jesse Fitzgerald raised her sons and

they both went off to college. One son, Edmund,

returned to Milwaukee and became president and

chairman of the board of Northwestern Mutual

Life Insurance Co. As an investment, Northwestern

Mutual Life Insurance Co. commissioned a ship to

be built. That ship was named after its chairman,

Edmund Fitzgerald, to honor Mr. Fitzgerald and

his family’s heritage. The Edmund Fitzgerald,

known as “Big Fitz,” sailed on the Great Lakes for

17 years until her catastrophic end in a storm on

Lake Superior on November 19, 1975. This tragedy

is forever immortalized in Gordon Lightfoot’s song,

“The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald”.

After William Fitzgerald’s death, the unfinished

structure on Lafayette Hill was dismantled and

the remaining foundation and lot were sold to

Mrs. M.A. Reinhardt, the widow of Dr. William

Reinhardt. Mrs. Reinhardt used the original

Ferry and Clas architectural drawings for the

reconstruction of the home and it was built, just as

the Fitzgerald’s intended, but with the addition of

a coach house and stable at an additional cost of

$4,500. This time, it was completed.

The home features a façade of red brick laid

Flemish bond resting on a bed of Lake Superior

sandstone with white marble steps leading to the

central doorway. The original columned porch

existed only across the entryway but later was

expanded to stretch across the entire portico. An

open-air porch above the entryway was enclosed,

creating a sunroom. Tall, twin chimney stacks

flank the roof while a terra-cotta belt course

divides the second and third levels and one

also frames the entire home under the cornice.

The double-hung windows, crowned by flared,

flat brick lintels, are accented with decorative

keystones. White marble was used for trim on the

exterior windows and doors. A widow’s walk, a

railed rooftop platform, was constructed atop the

roof. They were often found on homes in New

England Coastal towns of the 19th Century to

serve as a lookout for incoming ships, appropriate

for the sea-faring Fitzgerald family. The exterior

entrance on the east side of the building was

constructed in 1940 when the home was

transformed into a duplex. The entrance features

a carved marble bas relief, which was originally

located above the door of the open-air porch, and

is crowned with a semi-circular door canopy.

Old-world craftsmanship, warmth and

character can be found throughout the interior. The

inviting vestibule features a floor of tile specifically

shipped to Milwaukee from a monastery in

Brussels, Belgium. The massive foyer is lined with

rich, quarter sawn oak paneling and displays a

coffered, barrel-vaulted ceiling designed by master

plasterers, Maxwell, Forbes and Stillman.

On the first floor, the living room, wrapped

in five-foot paneled walnut wainscoting,

contains a walnut framed fireplace surrounded

by green marble, sided by two columns. The

dining room’s ten and one-half foot ceiling

emphasizes the elaborate French mahogany

fireplace with its unique ornamentation and

style. The gourmet kitchen is a state-of-the-art

update, designed by the current owner. Paneled

pocket doors, made of walnut, oak or mahogany,

all with brass hardware, separate the main

rooms. Early Kohler Company gold-plated brass

fixtures can be found in the bathrooms.

The oak staircase and wood paneling, which

was recovered from Frederick and Ida Pabst’s

mansion, Woodbine, on Oconomowoc Lake, was

conceptualized by Hayden & Co. of New York.

It was originally designed to soften the interior

of the Pabst home, which was built entirely

of concrete. The old-growth oak lumber was

retrieved from Lake Superior to match the tight

grain of the original 1900 interior. The staircase

leads to a library, sunroom and two bedrooms on

the second floor. The fanciful, romantic design of

the library ceiling, floor, trim and fireplace was

the creation of artists/painters Rolf Herzog and

JoAnn Binder of Milwaukee. The ceiling above the

shower in the bathroom off the library was raised

to accommodate a very tall tenant. The sunroom’s

warm ceramic floor, ceiling-to-floor windows,

and sidelights allows streams of sunlight to filter

in, making the room an ideal retreat for reading

books and sipping tea. The master bedroom’s

marble fireplace is warm and inviting.

The third floor features a large ballroom

and two smaller rooms, the rear room originally

a servant’s quarter. There are two bathrooms on

the third floor, one adjacent to the ballroom is

equipped with a functional water closet. The

plaster lunettes above each ballroom window

show a classical design of urns and laurels. The

plaster fireplace is topped by a plaque of playful

putties and sconces. The spiral staircase to the

rooftop terrace is accessed via a ship-type hatch.

The home was not only complete, but it was as

grand as it was intended.

Just a few years later in 1906, the property

and newly constructed home, coach house, and

stable were sold to Carl and Helena Phillipson

Herzfeld. Carl Herzfeld married Helena Phillipson,

sister of his business partner Richard I. Phillipson,

and together, Carl and Richard established the

Herzfeld-Phillipson Corp. Along with the Stone

brothers of Chicago, they bought Julius Simon’s

dry goods store, Boston Store, located on 4th Street

and Grand Avenue. The store offered multi vendors

selling a variety of goods under one roof, a concept

first popularized by a Massachusetts retailer.

Mr. Herzfeld was a far-sighted and sagacious

business man. As head of the Air Service

Committee of the Association of Commerce,

he aided in developing air travel in and out of

Milwaukee, including the first air shipment of

goods into Wisconsin with Boston Store as the

destination. Along with his business acumen, Mr.

Herzfeld was equally known for his contributions

toward the relief of the unfortunate and needy.

Mrs. Herzfeld was a long-time supporter of the

arts and education. Together Carl and Helena

raised two sons, Richard and Hans (John), both

of whom became executives at Boston Store

and members of many civic organizations. The

Herzfeld’s legacy of philanthropy has been carried

out to the present in the Richard and Ethel

Herzfeld Foundation.

The Herzfeld’s enjoyed the home for twenty

years until famed Milwaukee architect Alexander

Chadborne Eschweiler and his wife, Maria

Mueller Eschweiler, became the next owners

of the home in 1926. As a designer of many

homes for the prominent and wealthy in the

area, including the Schlesinger Mansion across

the street, Mr. Eschweiler found this Ferry and

Clas home to be much to his liking. In 1937, the

Eschweilers moved to their summer home on

North Lake. The interior of the home was then

redesigned by the Eschweiler and Eschweiler

architectural firm as a two-apartment duplex.

After Mr. Eschweiler’s death in 1940, the home

was purchased by Wisconsin Realty Co. serving as

a high-end income property for 36 years. Joseph

Simpson, Robert W. Baird, Karem Abdul-Jabbar,

handbag artist Patricia Smith, and many others

all called it home. During this time, the urban

renewal march was in full swing along Prospect

Avenue. It might have invaded E. Lafayette Place

had it not been for a dedicated group of East

Side residents who later formed the Watertower

Landmark Trust. They objected to Lafayette Place

becoming a site for the construction of a high-rise

and the needed variances were denied for the

demolition project. In 1976, the coach house and

stable behind the home were divided into two

separate parcels. This created a separate upper

unit condominium residence and a lower unit

condominium garage with a separate address on

Windsor St., also known as “Carriage House Row”.

Next, William and Gillian Wigdale purchased

the home in 1979 and invested heavily in making

much needed renovations and repairs. They

created a terrace on the roof and installed the

spiral staircase. This resulted in the terrace being

the prime place for parties and viewing fireworks.

The Wigdales now divide their time between

Wisconsin and Florida.

The home changed ownership again in

1999 when John and Patti Ogden, partners in

the Ogden Realty Co., purchased the home from

the Wigdales. Their family spent many hours

enjoying the unblemished view of the lakefront

and harbor from the rooftop terrace. They used

the lower level unit as income property.

In 2003, the home was sold to the current

owner, Randy Bryant, who was born and raised

in Milwaukee. Bryant married Cecilia Gore, also

a Milwaukee native, in 2009. Ms. Gore is currently

the Executive Director of the Brewers Community

Foundation. Mr. Bryant is the President and Chief

Executive Officer of Ten Chimneys Foundation

in Genesee Depot. In addition to these positions,

Gore and Bryant are active members in the

community. Gore serves on the boards of Alverno

College as a Trustee, the Marcus Center and

Milwaukee Public Library Foundation. Bryant

serves as President of the Board of Directors

of the Milwaukee County Historical Society, is

a member of the City of Milwaukee East Side

Architectural Review Board, a National Trust

for Historic Preservation Council Member, and

a Trustee of the Milwaukee Art Museum. Upon

purchasing the home, Bryant set about to restore

the home to its formal elegance along with

adding modern conveniences necessary for

today’s lifestyle. After many months of research

for historical and architectural accuracy, along

with a substantial financial commitment, he

began a major restoration of the home which

included a state-of –the-art, custom designed

kitchen. The white marble used in repairing

the entryway steps, the vestibule’s encaustic tile

floor, the recovered and reinstalled staircase

and paneling, the unveiling of the previously

covered dining room fireplace and many other

improvements are all restorative projects

comedies, and musicals in a variety of locations around the Lake

Country of Waukesha County.

In early spring of 1959, an article appeared in the Lake Country

Reporter and invited area residents who were interested in forming a

community theatre group to meet at Arrowhead High School. An English

teacher at Arrowhead, Marvin Solomon, led this initiative. About 40 people

responded to his ad and began, at once, to produce a play. They elected

officers, set up a play reading committee and a by-laws committee. Within

a few weeks, tryouts were held and, in June 1959, the Lake Country Players

presented its debut production, “Sabrina Fair,” for two performances.

Solomon directed this first play, and became the founding president of

the organization. By the end of that year, the Lake Country Players were

incorporated as a nonprofit arts group.

Ruth fondly recalls her roles as an actor in and director of countless

productions throughout the 55-year history. She currently serves as

treasurer on the Board of Directors.

During its first five years, all shows were performed at Arrowhead

High School’s South Campus gymnasium. Increased school enrollment

made stage availability difficult, so the troupe began a four-year residence

in the second floor of the old Hartland Community Hall. A tent ceiling

was created to improve acoustics, and some memorable shows were done,

including a production of “Deadwood Dick,” where the hall was converted

into a saloon with players mingling among the spectators.

GOOD THINGS COME in small packages. And the black box theatre

experience at Lake Country Playhouse is proof of that.

Ruth Behrend can speak to the success of this small, community

theatre company in Hartland. As a charter member, she’s seen the growth

of this organization and played an integral role in its success. “We strive

for good, quality theatre,” said Ruth, adding that it’s been their mission

from the very beginning.

The Lake Country Players, as the troupe is known, have been

providing entertainment to audiences for 55 years, presenting dramas,

The second floor of the Hartland

Community Hall was condemned in 1967, so the

Lake Country Players performed in a variety of

locations over the next four years, including the

Swallow and Merton Schools, Lakeside Country

Club, and Oconomowoc High School. In 1971,

they returned to Arrowhead High School, which

had constructed the Little Theatre on its north

campus. This became the “home base” for Lake

Country Players for the next three decades.

The theatre company’s association with

Arrowhead High School has been long and

fruitful, but there was a long-standing dream

to eventually acquire a home of their own.

This dream became a reality in 2002 with

the acquisition of the Masonic Lodge building

at 221 E. Capitol Dr. in Hartland. After some

minor renovations, the Lake Country Playhouse

opened with a series of events, including a

revival of the spring production from that

year, “And the World Goes ‘Round.” Recent

improvements to the theatre include improved

air conditioning and the installation of more

comfortable theater-style seating.

Since establishing a permanent home

in Hartland, the Lake Country Players have

expanded their offering of productions. Before

2002, they could only produce two shows per

season, with a play in the fall and a musical

in the spring. They eventually expanded their

capabilities and, starting with the 2006-2007

season, they now present eight shows per season.

“The black box theatre experience is

basically one big room with seating that

accommodates up to 80 patrons,” said Ruth. This

environment, explained Ruth, lends itself to a

theatre experience with a more intimate focus

for the audience who enjoys being close to the

actors. “They feel every nuance and see every

facial expression in this setting,” she added.

The black box venue features tiered seating

and provides a minimalistic backdrop with

simple lighting. “And we do some very different

things with painting murals and developing

ingenious set productions. Many of these sets

have been quite spectacular, considering the

space,” said Behrend.

The Lake Country Players is comprised

solely of volunteers, whose passion for live

theatre drives this company. Many of the

volunteers have professional theatre training

or have taught this discipline at the high

school or college level. Cast and crew members

come from all over the greater Milwaukee area.

“We’re building up quite an audience. We try

to do a nice variety of shows,” said Ruth, which

is likely another reason they have no shortage

of volunteers.

According to Ruth, they don’t run any

special events, but they manage because of

support from their volunteers, donations from

individuals and area businesses, and ticket sales.

“We’re always looking for volunteers to help

with costuming, set building, and set decoration.

Some volunteers come in this way, then find out

they can act, too,” she added. “And until they try

live theatre, they don’t realize what a pleasure it

is. For some, it is a true outlet. ”

Recent success with Monty Python’s

“Spamalot” required the troupe to add on more

shows to meet the demand for tickets.

THERE IS NOTHING quite like springtime in

the Lake Country. After the relentless winter

of 2013-14, it’s especially satisfying to see the

sparkling blues waters and waves rolling

again—finally. Nowhere is that satisfaction felt

more than along the northeast shore of Lac

La Belle where this home has everything you

can ask for in a Lake Country property and

more. From this spot on the shoreline you can

see and feel the warmth of the daytime sun

from the wee hours of the morning until it sets

at dusk. When they say that this is the best

swimming frontage on the lake, it really is.

In fact, this stretch of Lac La Belle shoreline

as appealing to observe the wall of onyx stone

that engulfs the two-way fireplace and provides

a backdrop all the way to the second level. This

glistening onyx stone wall was installed one

piece at a time with 2-inch thick and 4-6-inch

wide pieces all the way from floor-to-ceiling. A

meticulous effort resulting in one of the most

elegant fireplace walls you will ever see.

A significant part of the renovation effort

and open-concept conversion was the expansion

of the formal dining room and dinette areas.

The original version of the home had a rather

small kitchen with no dinette and a closed-off

dining room. The current dining room, finished

with the same inlaid mosaic tile flooring that

runs throughout the entryway and foyer, is now

open to the great room and separated ever so

gracefully by a twelve-foot couch console. It is

also balanced scrupulously with the same white

pillars that now wrap around in sequence all

the way from the end of the great room back to

the kitchen. The new dinette area was fashioned

off of the kitchen by expanding the wall and

inserting a huge bay window. This not only

provides a continuous view of the shoreline

across the front of the home but also provides a

cozy little sitting area for a family meal or coffee.

The kitchen itself was probably the single

biggest motivating factor behind the Gold

Award the renovation received in 2010 from the

American Society of Interior Design (ASID). The

kitchen is not exceedingly large in size, but it’s

loaded with specialty finish work from one end

to the other. The custom cabinetry is finished in

a glazed Harbormist color that blends perfectly

with the granite countertops. The countertops

meld into a backsplash which is then enhanced

by and inlaid ceramic design over the stovetop,

sink and around the sill areas. There are Sub-

zero and Wolf appliances with an island and

plenty of cabinet space that make this kitchen as

might actually be the best, most consistent, hard

sand bottom frontage in all of the Lake Country.

Combine this with hiking and biking trails and

the Lac La Belle Country Club that boarders

the back of the lot, and you have virtually

everything the outdoor enthusiast could ask for.

One of the many unique features of the

home is the front door is actually in the rear

of the home. While it’s a bit unique, having the

main entrance at the back of the home allows

for the entire front of the home to have an

unaltered view of the shoreline. The home is

only around 24 years old, but it underwent an

award-winning, million-dollar renovation that

was nearly a complete facelift.

The intent of the renovation was to take full

advantage of the lake views from every angle

and every available inch in the home. Once

inside, the open concept foyer quickly gives way

to a large great room. This room has a cleverly

designed wall of windows that provide our

first glimpse of the shoreline, but it is equally

From season to season, the Lake Country

Players provide a diverse repertoire for adult

audiences. Yet in 2003, Ruth developed the first

annual summer children’s workshop.

The inaugural performance of “Alice in

Behrend as the lead. The love of theatre for Katie,

her cousins, and countless other youth from the

area blossomed, thanks to Ruth Behrend’s vision.

Now a professional actress and singer, Katie

will direct her first show this summer at the

Lake Country Playhouse. And she selected the

show in which she made her acting debut. “I’m

so grateful for the quality theatre experience at

Lake Country Playhouse. The skills acquired

through a theatrical experience set the stage

for those needed in life. Learned early on, these

skills become second-nature,” she said.

The Summer Children’s Workshop is open

to youth ages 10 to 14. And the experience,

explained Katie, helps teach kids the love of the

arts and theatre. It also instills the importance of

eye contact, voice, and polished presentation. “To

think critically through something that’s fun, like

performing in a play, you leave with a whole set

of new skills,” said Katie.

Auditions for “Alice in Wonderland” will be

held this month. And more detailed information

is available at www.lakecountryplayhouse.net.

Tickets sales for the children’s performance

are reasonable and can be purchased in advance.

“We want to make this more accessible

to families with children. Donations from

businesses and individuals help compensate

for that. Youth theatre is so important and it’s a

really good way to spend time,” said Katie.

And for both children and adults, the

theatre is a place to explore their talents.

At the height of the Great Depression, Bonnie

Parker and Clyde Barrow went from two small-

town nobodies in West Texas to America’s most

renowned heroes and the Texas law enforcement’s

worst nightmares. Fearless, shameless, and

alluring, their electrifying story of love, adventure

and crime captured the excited attention of an

entire country. Now, the most notorious couple

of the twentieth century takes on a whole new

adventure on stage and shows us all there is no

choice: You Love Who You Love.

It is again a magnificent single family dwelling

which the design team has transformed into an

up-to-the minute, nouveau-styled showhouse

befitting its gracious, old-world charm.

There are many steps that go into making

a successful showhouse. A home with an

appropriate floor plan and traffic flow must be

found, a volunteer design team that devotes their

time and vision must be organized, an army of

volunteers who staff the house during showhouse

hours must be assembled, and the leadership

volunteers who organize all other aspects of the

project must be orchestrated. Last, but not least,

the 2014 Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse

could not be possible without the generous

offering from Randy Bryant and Cecelia Gore

to share their grand home with all of us.

Players will perform the Prince Street Players

“Be still and know that I am God” is a deceivingly simple

directive replete with power. Upon its acceptance hinges the

truth of four brief statements. There are no insurmountable

obstacles. There is a solution to every problem. There is a

remedy for every ill. There is an answer to every prayer.

To those scoffers who point in derisive contradiction

at headlines shrieking with disaster, war, crime, immorality,

disloyalty in government and nation, there is a conclusive

answer: to prove the statement is to obey the directive.

Amid the relentless pressure of modern living, is it possible

to “be still and know?” Is it possible temporarily to shut off the

thinking processes that are urging greater action in less time,

and relax in a spiritual peace entirely confident that all is well?

Is it possible in a physical and mental stillness that results in

communion with God to silence nerves quivering with the

need for rushing further, for accomplishing more?

The patriarchs of old—Abraham, Moses, Joshua—listened

to the voice of God. They turned to Him in every need on every

occasion just as we turn to a close friend. But, always, as a first

step, they were still, listening, expectant that God would tell

them what to do.

They knew without question that He was God, and this

conviction made them want to obey Him. Thus, their humble

obedience resulted in their becoming great leaders of men.

Modern history is filled with examples of men and women

who have overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles by

a child-like and steadfast faith in a power greater than man.

Problems of every nature, financial, economic, personal are

being solved every day by those who turn confidently and

understandingly to God in a certain knowledge that all things

are possible to Him.

For thousands of years, prayers have been answered fully

and completely for those willing to give up human outlining for

the assured benefits derived from trusting God.

Would we not do well, then, individually and as a nation,

to “be still and know?” In the restful solitude of spiritual

communion, could we not find, once again, that balance which

renders unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and unto God

the things that are God’s?
