Spring has arrived, and many of our neighbors have begun their migration north. Goodbyes have been said and anticipation of the next season is on our minds. It always reminds me of the movie, “Same Time Next Year,” an American romantic comedy-drama starring Alan Alda. If you haven’t seen the movie, rent it. It will bring back memories of the changing times/cultures in our lives in the seventies.

Although we will be in summer mode, the office and Board of Directors (BOD) will continue to make Lazy River village (LRV) the most desired community in the area. Our maintenance forces will have a chance to catch up with those things that have been ignored or pushed to the back burner for more pressing items.

SPORTS LAZY RIVER 30TH ANNIVERSARY GOLF SCRAMBLE What started in 1982 in Lazy River is still going strong here in 2012! On Wednesday afternoon, March 28, at the Jacaranda West Country Club, a group of 80 Lazy River (LR) men and women had a great time playing some golf and socializing with other residents, renters, and golf league members. The day was capped off with a terrific Happy Hour and buffet dinner that featured roast beef, Chicken Piccata, and a superb poached salmon. Many of the group had to wipe that gooey chocolate from their cheeks and chins after eating that three layer cake!

The Awards hour after this great day was one that will bring back many lasting memories. The LR Scramble committee consisting of the Beaudoins, Butterys, Correias, and Andersons had worked hard during the past season having breakfasts and dinners to supplement the LR Leagues awards, prizes, and raffles. A highlight of the Raffles was a beautiful Carved Duck, donated by master craftsman Chuck Gross. The 110 diners were pleased to see the many happy golfers who were awarded plaques, trophies, and gifts:

Men’s 9 hole League Player of 2012 Joe Petrone

Ladies 9 hole League Player of 2012 Elaine Kast

Couples League Team of 2012 Jo & Ed Faria

Men’s 18 hole League Gold Cup Match Ray Baity

Men’s 18 hole League Silver Cup Match Ron Beaudoin

Closest to the Pin Ladies was Jeanne Carr

Closest to the Pin Men was Paul Headley

Rookie of the Year Men was Paul Headley

First Place Scramble Team was Paul Headley, Terry Kerrigan, Marilyn Correia, & Laura Avon

Second Place was Fred Buttery, Bill Corriea, Ed Huffman, Fran Kirk

Third Place went to Ray Baity, Tony Biseglio, Paul Shakespeare, and Myrna Snyder

Ladies Putting Contest 1st Place Kathy Wolcott, 2nd Place Jo Faria

Special Awards for Outstanding Service at Breakfasts and Dinners went to Harvey Wolcott and Len Anderson.

The Committee thanked Carol Beaudoin, Gwen Fulbright, Marie Jennerich, and Joan D’allesandro for providing hospitality all day. After the Awards a very nice gift package was presented to outgoing Men’s 18 hole League Coordinator Ron Beaudoin and his wife, Carol for many years of service to Lazy River Golfers. Dozens of door prizes were given and all the guests left the hall with a package of memories that will probably last them for many, many years.

BOWLING NEWS Well, I just returned from our wrap-up Bowling Banquet at the Jacaranda Golf and Country Club and, as usual, the meal was terrific. I want to thank Ruth Ann Davis and Ellen Hurley for all their hard work in organizing this event. We had 45 of our 48 regular bowlers attend, and a good time was had by all. We elected next year's Officers who will be Nancy Riddle (Treasurer), Ruth Ann Davis (Secretary), and yours truly returning as President. Next we handed out 12 awards to individual bowlers and another 16 awards to teams. There was approximately $1,500 handed out in total.

We are always looking for new bowlers, so if you are interested in joining us in the fall (1st game November 6; last game April 2, 2013), please contact Ruth Ann or myself. Our Banquet for next year is WEDNESDAY April 10 as the Monday and Tuesday of that week were already booked.

Members of the "200 CLUB" for April are as follows:

Week 20: Steve Ashford Week 21: Sue Keller, Gary Clark Week 22: YOURS TRULY (my first ever 200 game!!!)

See you in the fall.

COMING EVENTS ENTERTAINMENT There is a reason why I always say, "I love my 'job' - it's the best one in the Park!" As I thought this week about the perks that go with the position, I thought about all of the people who have been such great helpers this year. My job is to coordinate, but you guys are really the workers. I can't thank enough all the people who helped this season with chairs, tickets, phone helpers, tech/mike people, CD maker, and all who were so willing to call and offer to help. I knew that I wouldn't have to give it another thought, that you would just BE there without my reminding you. Thank you all again for just being there. Especially to Chet and Joy for all their help and support with finances, tickets, and all the fun on showcase days!

Blessings to you all for supporting the Lazy River entertainment! A big thank you all to the people who have called with ideas for performers, and also to the people who call or stop and tell me how much they enjoyed the shows. That smile on your faces really puts a smile in my heart! See you in the fall! Connie Bromley

"DANCING FOR THE FUN OF IT" Taking a bit of space to say "thanks" for attending! Thanks from Billie Chambers & Beverley Cooney for all your support this 2012 season, coming out for "Dancing For The Fun Of It." It was great to see so many lazy river gals, (and a few guys occasionally) dance for the fun of it!!! We invite both gals and guys to join in next 2013 season. It's not hard to learn the steps and it’s lots of fun....bring us your CDs and we will use your music choices along with our own. A special thanks goes to Wanda Hartung who kindly offered the use of her Bose CD player and brought it over to the Clubhouse each week for us. That was so sweet of you Wanda and we appreciated it! Music on a good portable sound system really makes a difference in our overall enjoyment of the hour we dance.

Thanks to all those who came out for the "Move and Groove" hour of walking and light exercise to the Leslie Sansome DVD. It's great fun when the Clubhouse is full of movin and groovin enthusiasm using the big screen. We will use that DVD again next season or something similar like the senior Jane Fonda DVD. So keep movin and grooving until we all meet again at Lazy River next season!!!

One final thank you.... Goes to everybody who attended the "Nostalgia Night" evenings and that will also be continued next season. Dean Martin, the Branson Presley show and Yakov Smirnoff comedian were our first choices for this 2012 season. I hope anyone that didn't get a chance to come to "Nostalgia Night" will attend next season. It will be held one Saturday in January/February/March 2013. It’s a "free" night of big screen entertainment at the Clubhouse.

CLUB NEWS

COMPUTER CLUB NEWS Even though many of our members have left Lazy

River, there was a nice turnout for this April 14 meeting of the Computer Club. And that was because our chief Guru, “Bobbo” Bob Atwater

came to speak. His presentation today was on Web Browsers, Google Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer. It was informative and fascinating. There was so

much to be learned. Bob is such a “HIT” with us that we plan to have him speak twice next

year. Along that same note, we are looking into having other speakers, and adding more classes. LOOK! The club voted to lower the cost of membership from $15 to $10 for a single membership and from $20 to $15 for a couple. Spread the word, the Computer Club is a great place.

The Club had a new sign made for outside the hut. You have to see it to appreciate it, come on by!

Joyce Cote gave us some Tips and Tricks on Recovery Disks, a Gmail feature letting you make telephone calls from your computer and some informative handouts.

Today was our last meeting for the season, there will be no

DANCE CLUB Just a little article to keep in touch and to inform you of next season’s schedule.

First of all – a BIG thanks to those who chaired a monthly dance and a BIG thanks to all of you who supported your dance club. Without you, we could not exist!! And what a fun year we had!

But look ahead to see what you have to look forward to next season:

October 25, 2012 Jay Smith Ashford’s December 31, 2012 Tony “D” Jean Swain January 24, 2013 Rock-A-Dials Bobbie Bulthuis February 28, 2013 Jay Smith Carole Beaudoin March 28, 2013 Flashbacks Swartzell’s

Your memberships are paid up until January, when they will be sold at the same price - $2.50 per person for renewals and $5.00 per person for new members.

Have a happy, healthy summer and keep those toes tapping. See you in the fall! Submitted by Susie Anderson

BOAT CLUB NEWS It is with great sadness that I report the loss of Past Commodore Bob Hart on April 10. Bob went into the hospital with a ruptured appendix and his heart and lungs just could not fight the extreme infection that set in. All of our members will surely miss Bob. He did endless tasks for the Boat Club over the years and behind the scenes, including the donation of an American Flag at the Marina whenever it was needed. We send our sincere sympathy to his partner, Anne Kirsch, and his family. Information on Services has not been determined at this time.

On a happier note, our annual Spring Picnic will be held on April 12. We have 112 members attending and look forward to delicious hamburgers and hot dogs by our grilling chefs, Stan Archkosky, Steve Ashford, and Vince Guliani. A big Thank You goes out to Phil Cole, Betty Danfelser, and Anne Kirsch for all their work putting this together. We also want to thank the fun "Miracle Melodies" group, under the direction of Jerry Cote, for their very entertaining music. What a great way to spend an afternoon!

Our next General Dinner Meeting will be held on November 8. Hopefully, many of our snowbird members will be back by then. The December holiday meeting will be held on December 6, so mark your calendars for that as well. Both are in the planning stage, along with boating trips, but we will keep you informed.

Do have a wonderful, safe, and healthy summer .

Smooth Sailing,

Ginnie Wood, Commodore

THIS & THAT IN MEMORIAM

Bob Hart passed away April 10, 2012. A resident since 1998, Bob served Lazy River Village in numerous ways, including Secretary of the Board of

Directors and as Commodore of the Boat Club. He also enjoyed participating in the Woodworkers and Dance Clubs. A memorial service was held for Bob on April 16.

BEAUTIFICATION Another great season has come to an end. Your beautification volunteers were busy planting some palms to help finish the revitalization project. We dug some trenches, for water supply, for rain drainage, for electric to the putting green & electric for the video security

camera system. We painted the old office and wood/computer buildings a soft beige (thanks Keith R & everyone else).

We power washed the RV area, wall inside the entrance & outside the Fitness Center.

Some bushes were trimmed around the Village, by the marina & on both sides of the waterway to allow easier passage of boats.

We were able to help finish the putting area (now we need help with putting). Helped take down some Christmas lights, put a piano on the stage for the concert, and new casters under the organ platform so it rolls easier.

We solved some problems, decided who had the best teams at home, had some good laughs, and hired some new apprentices. Most of all we tried to make Lazy River more beautiful.

Thanks to all from your fellow residents. Now have a great healthy and happy Summer. Be sure to do the off-season workout program all were given, and come back hard-bodied & healthy ready for next year’s labors.

God Bless America, God Bless Lazy River. Submitted by, Lean Ona Rake.

PICTURE DIRECTORY By the time the May Current comes out or shortly thereafter, the picture directories should be in. Please contact Dot Driscoll, 101 Bermuda Way, to pick up your directory.

If you have returned to your summer home, don’t forget to provide Dot with a self-addressed 8 x 10 envelope with seven stamps attached if you would like the directory mailed to you. Otherwise you can pick it up when you return to Lazy River.

Be on the lookout in future Currents for information concerning the next gathering to honor those couples in Lazy River who have been married 50 years or more. In 2012, we had a wonderful party, and we hope to match or exceed it in 2013.

AGE-ISMS I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, and fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, and take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. I have bouts with dementia, have poor circulation, hardly feel my hands and feet anymore, can't remember if I'm 85 or 92, and have lost all my friends; but, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

*** I felt like my body had gotten totally out of shape! So I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down, and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over.

First let me tell you we are snowbirds. However, our family has been Lazy River Village snowbirds since 1983. We have seen a lot of changes over the years. The last few years we thought the village was showing its age and needed to be upgraded. It is to this that we want to address this note.

First, I don't like to mention names, because you'll forget someone in the process. However, I feel that I must try. Thanks to Charles Sulzbach, Mike Killian, Justine Mackie, and the Lazy River Village Board of Directors. You had the foresight and fortitude to proceed with the revitalization projects. In my view, you have increased everyone’s investment many times over. I'm told there were over 50 homes for sale before the revitalization, and now there are 20. I guess that can speak for itself. I also know there were other factors to be considered. I must tell you, a couple of days ago my wife was at a local hair dresser, and during the conservations she was asked where she lived. She told them Lazy River Village and the reply was – “Oh, you live in the nicest park.”

I also want to thank Justine Mackie and her staff for all they do. They work very hard to keep Lazy River Village a safe and enjoyable place to reside.

Thanks also goes out to you (the residents) for all the volunteering you do to support all the various activities, Welcome Center, Beautification, etc.

In closing, we thank everyone for being so friendly and making ones stay in Lazy River Village a place you want to return year after year. EDWARD ROSS CONSTRUCTION

WELCOME CENTER There are two new residents who moved into Lazy River Village in April:

Betty and William Fulton 111 Tahitian Way

Rick and Lynette Whiters

112 Lazy River Road.

Currently, there are four homes pending settlement. Dean and Sue Whilhelm is one of the pending sales. This couple came to the March Open House. I met them and they reported to be just looking. Sue stated “and we kept looking and looking” and were so impressed with Lazy River that "we bought much to my surprise.”

There was a total of 53 plus houses for sale in Lazy River Village in December of 2010. Today we have 20 houses for sale, which means approximately two plus houses were sold each month, Congratulations to all. The revitalization did bring many curious people to see what changes were made. Many came in because of how beautiful the front entrance looked. They complemented the volunteers on how the changes made such a difference. They were impressed with the friendliness and attitude of the people they met here.

The summer months begin in May, and Nancy Penoyar will take over the Welcome Center with the assistance of Sue Keeler. The year-round people will volunteer at the Welcome Center office. The activity will be at a much slower pace, which is welcomed, and perhaps a few homes still will sell.

The Rental Request Binder (White) is completed. The rental requests received are collected and put in a binder on a monthly basis. We have 2012 dates going forward and 2013 dates. The binder is for the home owners to use to keep their home rented. You can come to the Welcome Center anytime to use this information. The binder is kept on the shelf in the small table under the television.

Most of the snowbirds will be gone when this article is published. Have a safe trip. We will miss you and welcome you back starting in October.

Sincerely,

Rosemarie Sulzbach, Winter Coordinator
