Choosing your remodeling contractor isthe most important decision you’ll makewhen undertaking a remodeling project.Take your time and be thorough in yoursearch. Here are some suggestions forchoosing the “right” remodeler.Since nearly half of all projects signed by a contractor are the result of client re-ferrals, and an additional 22 percent of jobsare the result of word of mouth, ask rela-tives, neighbors and business colleagues ifthey can recommend someone. Anothergood option is to visit the Web sites of pro-fessional associations, such as the NationalAssociation of the Remodeling Industry(NARI), www.remodeltoday.com, andsearch for certified remodelers in your area.

Next, look for a company with an estab-lished business history in your community.Surviving in any business in today’s compet-itive marketplace is a difficult task, and suc-cessful contractors are proud of theirhistory in the industry. As part of this step,check with the Better Business Bureau inyour area as well.

Make sure to ask for copies of the insur-ance certificates to verify coverage, both li-ability and worker’s compensation. Inaddition, some states require licensing andregistration. If your state does have con-struction licensing laws, ask for your con-tractor’s registration and license, thenconfirm the license number and expirationdate with your local jurisdiction.

Also ask if any of the company’s employeesare certified. Trade certifications are good indi-cators of dedication, professionalism and knowledge of the industry. Remodelers are required to meet certain industry criteriato maintain their certifications.

Finally, request a list of references forprojects the company has completed, es-pecially those similar in relation to the oneyou are considering. The contractor shouldbe able to supply you with a minimum ofthree references, including names, tele-phone numbers and addresses. Make surethe list includes current project referencesas well as references from a year ago soyou can see how the work has stood upand if the remodeler supported the work ifthere was a problem.

As a follow-up to this question, ask if the contractor can arrange a visit to see a finished job. You also should ask for pro-fessional references from suppliers or sub-contractors to verify sound businesspractices.

You can increase your chances of successby conducting qualifying interviews, and fol-lowing up on references and credentials. Youneed to look for the person you feel will provide the best all-around service avail-able, above and beyond the necessary re-modeling skills.

Remodeling can be a rewarding experiencewith the right partner. You can create yourdream room or home, and learn a little aboutdesign and remodeling along the way.

Choosing your remodeling contractor is the most important decision you’ll make when

undertaking a remodeling project. Take your time and be thorough in your search.
