The imposing building was built on the slope of the Mont Saint Clair between 1890 and 1896 on the site of the old boys' school. It only became a co-educational school in 1922.

Its monumental door towers over the steps of a stairway used by four generations of Sète school children, including, of course, Paul Valéry and Georges Brassens, to name two of its most famous alumni.

Jean Vilar :1912-1947

The founding father of the Festival of Avignon.

Paul Valéry: 1871-1945

The school was named after this French writter and poet.

Georges BrassensGeorges Brassens 1921-1981

This French singer studied in our school too. A schoolyard is named after him.

Since the school houses both a "collège" and a "lycée", respectively attended by about 500 and 620 pupils, as the children grow older and advance in their schooling, they move up from the first two staggered courtyards, to the third one and to the upper building, from where they can enjoy a commanding view of the port and the town. Therefore, from age eleven to seventeen, from their entering the secondary educational system to the baccalauréat class, the pupils can attend the same school.

“You are exceptionally lucky in this school: if you look up from your books, you behold the sea ”.

Opposite the caretaker ’s office there is a large room.

It is named the Herber Hall (“La Salle Herber”).

All sort of meetings and important gatherings take place there.

This the caretaker’s office…

They are two ladies working shifts. They are the ones who supervise the comings and goings of all the pupils and anybody who does not work in Paul Valéry.

If you want to come in when the door is locked you must ring the bell.

They also take care of the phone switchboard and the mail.

• What is your job in the “collège” ?

• Well, I am the vie principal (the assistant headmaster) and I take care of the college entirely. I have an administrative work : the management of the school on an every day basis ; a pedagogic work :I help the teachers for the tests taken by the pupils of an entire form (for the “brevet blanc” for example), their time-tables, the decisions concerning a class… ; and I am in charge of outside relations : meeting with parents, relations with the town-hall, various meetings, relations with the “Rectorat” in Montpellier.

• What is the busiest moment of the year ?

• The busiest moments in the year are the beginning

of the school year because of the new time-tables…

and the months of May and June because of the

“orientation” procedures, the inscriptions, meeting

the parents. Moreover I have to prepare the next

school year. So these are extremely busy times !

Mrs. LE BOLLOC ’H

Page 23: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

Is it a full-time job ?

Of course ! I don’t have any schedule, I work a lot you know, even on Saturday afternoons !

What is your duty towards the teachers ?

I have to help them for the classroom’s “distribution”, for their time-tables. I do my best for them so they have a good schedule and the forms they want.

Do you have good contacts with the pupils ?

Yes, unfortunately they are not frequent, but I like these moments.

Why have you chosen this job ?

Before, I was a teacher, but I wanted to change, to change things a little, so I decided to take the headmaster’s exam.

Page 24: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

Ms. Hélène KAOUAH

• What is your job in the secretary office ?• Today I must prepare the « orientation” files. So, I sort the

documents to give to the teachers or to the parents. I prepare diplomas, also when an “examen blanc” (a practice exam) is organised I make the copies anonymous or I match the copies with the people’s names. I also dispatch information to the teachers (meeting, trainings…)

• Is it hard ?• My job isn’t very hard, but certain moments are more

difficult than others : the end of the year is busier than the beginning because of inscriptions, diplomas, orientations…

• Do you work alone ?• No, I get helped by Michèle, another secretary.

Page 25: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

What is the role of this office in the Collège ?

This office is in charge of the « permis à points », punishments… But also all that has to do with the teachers.

What are your contact with pupils ?Grant-holders come here. Pupils who have passed the B.S.R (le Brevet de Sécurité Routière). who want to get their B.S.R. card. But pupils have much more contact with the “Vie Scolaire”

And what about parents and teachers ?We have not got a lot of contacts with parents, just for inscriptions. They turn more to Mrs. Le Belloc’h. The teachers come a lot of to the secretary office for absence, leave of absence… etc.

Introducing the “Vie scolaire”.

Every day , the “Vie scolaire” takes in charge the absence of the pupils and checks the motives of their absence. It ’s the transition office between the principal, the teachers and the pupils. It holds information such as our telephone number, our address, if we are sick or in good-health and information about our family. The person who supervises of the “Vie scolaire” are the C.P.E and the overseers (“les surveillants”).

Every pupil needs to go there when he’s late or if he has been absent.

Interviewing the staff of the Vie Scolaire

We interviewed Karine.

What ’s your job? Explain it.

My job has to do with everything which concerns the school. I’ m also in charge of the school magazine, so I must be able to use video techniques, photos to explain them to the pupils.

Do you like your job? What are the moments that you prefer? And the ones that you like the least?

Yes, I enjoy my job very much. I love to be with children, I learn lots of things from them. The best moment I prefer is between 1 p.m and 2 p.m. because I have lots of contacts with kids in a less formal atmosphere.

Page 30: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

I can say that the moments I like the least are when I have to do administrative tasks such as fill in files.

How long have you done it?

I’ve done it for the past two years but I have a five-year contract.

What’s a typical day for you?

On a typical day I have to help some children to do their homework, then I have to look after pupils who are in “study-room”. Later I do certain activities with them and after that I look after some others...

Page 31: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

We are going to show you the C.D.I. and explain to you its importance for the pupils and the teachers. C.D.I stands for “Centre de Documentation et d’Information” and is in fact the school library. The pupils can work, do research, use the Internet, check out documents and books.

Page 32: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

How to have access to the C.D.I.

To go to the C.D.I. we must fill in a file that we give to the C.D.I. with our “carnet de liaison”. It is a notebook where there are informations, justifications about the pupils’ absence and delays. We have an identity card and we put it in a little box at a special administration office called “vie scolaire” in French .

The old C.D.I.The old C.D.I. was where the classrooms 26, 27, 28, 29 now stand but it was getting to small; and the new library is where the old gymnasium was (which was home to some pigeons…) in the first court yard.

Page 33: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

Activities in the C.D.I. - Research :

*On the Web : We can do research on the internet in the computer room called T.I.C.E ( = technologie de l'information et de la communication pour l'enseignement )* we can look up info by themes on the C.D.I. computer : When we have to seek documents or books in the library, we can use that computer. We have to write the word : "THESAURUS= " and the word that we want to find documents about.

- Borrowing a bookTo borrow a book at the C.D.I. we must fill in a paper with the book's name, author, etc- School books and dictionaries:If we want to work with a school book, and we haven't got it we can borrow it, or if we need to look up a word, we can use a dictionary in the C.D.I..- Reading books or papers.- The “orientation” section: We can seek information about many jobs, and the studies necessary to achieve our goals.

Interview with the librarian, Mrs. Fieschi.

• Our group : How long ago did you begin to work at Paul Valéry and in the C.D.I. ?

• Mrs Fieschi : Before 1974, I was an Italian teacher in another school and in 1974 I began to work in Paul Valéry as a librarian.

• Our group : Was it always in the same place ?

• Mrs Fieschi : Two years ago, a new C.D.I. was built in the gymnasium, before, it consisted of only one big room, then, it took up two, and three, and four rooms.

Page 35: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

Our group : What are the differences between the old C.D.I. and the new ?Mrs Fieschi : this new library is more spacious, more beautiful, more organised because there are specialised sections : orientation section, TV section, two reading lounges, a room with ten computers called room "T.I.C.E” (= technologie de l'information et de la communication pour l'enseignement ) but there isn't much sunlight. The old C.D.I. was warmer, less cold, more central to the school. It was on a gallery and overlooking the second court yard.

Our group : Which do you prefer ?Mrs Fieschi : Neither. They have difference qualities.

Our group : How many persons work in the C.D.I. and who does what ?Mrs Fieschi : There are : one librarian with tenure, one person with a short-term contract ( "emploi jeune" in French"), three yearly job. Today one of us saved book references (there are 10164 books, in the C.D.I., they were either given or bought)

Our group : What do the pupils look for in the C.D.I. ?Mrs Fieschi : They look for a pleasant place and help when looking for documents, silence ...

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

Our group : How many pupils come to the C.D.I. ? Mrs Fieschi : About 500 pupils come to the C.D.I., during the ten hours during which it 's open. For example, today, there are 60 pupils right now. Usually there are more pupils from noon to 2:00 pm.

Our group : What studies did you do ? Mrs Fieschi :Before we had to take a “concours” named the “CAPES” in any subject (diplomas to become a teacher). But today, we must pass a “CAPES” especially devised for librarians. Our group : What do you do ?Mrs Fieschi: I must manage all the different aspects of the life in this C.D.I.: exhibitions, educational and cultural activities .And of course I buy books for the library.

Our group : Do you work a lot with the pupils ?Mrs Fieschi : The pupils are our most important “customers”.

Our group : Thank you for this interview.Mrs Fieschi : You are welcome.

The staff room is located in the first playground, near the library.

This room is where the teachers meet before going to their classes or during their breaks. At 10:00 am, most of them gather around a “counter” and have a snack and coffee.

They also come here to check their mailbox or make photocopies.

There is a fridge, a microwave oven and a sink in a special area of the staff room so they can have lunch there too.

Pupils are not allowed in this area of the school.

In the foreground you can see the “ counter”, in the background some tables and chairs where our teachers can work or relax.

I began working in a hospital. Then I got sick and I had to work in a school. But before doing so I had to take an exam.

Do you like this job?

Of course I like this job, but at first I did not have any training to work with teenagers.

What do you enjoy the most in your job?

I love working with teenagers.

What are the limits of your job?

I must have a doctor‘s prescription to give medicine to a pupil. What do you do when you can’t help pupils ?

When it’s very important I call doctor of their family or the E.R. I do the same for psychological problems.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a nurse in a school?

First you must be ready to face all sorts of problems and always persevere. And remember that in a school the pupils are our main preoccupations!

When they are in quatrième all the pupils must take part in a work placement program. For one week they must work in the firm or the business of their choice.

This training period allows the pupils to discover a job and what it implies to have a job.

During this week the young workers observe the work of the other employees and how the business is organised. Then they write a report about what they saw and their daily activities.

The future trainees of 4ème will be able to read these reports at the C.D.I., and it will help them to find a job later.

In September 1999, a group of Norwegian pupils from the islandof KarmØy, an island next to Stavanger, came for two weeks in ourschooL

Next spring, we went on a trip to Norway from April 25th to May9th 2000 with Ms. Naquet. We took three planes to get there and onthis occasion many of us flew for the first time. After a rather longtrip we arrived on Karmøy.

At night we stayed with the family of our Norwegian friends andduring the day we went to school with them.

We discovered the Norwegian way of life, of teaching andtravelled around the area. One day we even went up to Bergen.

After this trip going back to our school was a little hard!

Some of us -45 pupils from 4ème et 3 ème- wentto Sicily from April 7 th to April 15 th 2000. We leftfrom Sète at 11:00 pm, travelled by bus to Naplesduring 18 hours, then we took a ferry the followingnight to go to Sicily.

We toured the island, visited the main townsand their monuments; we saw a lot of churches, romantemples and theatres ….

At night we slept in hotels. We were, two, three or four by room - so we had a lot of fun!

The trip lasted f ive days at theend of May. Twenty-six pupils f romdif ferent classes of 4ème took part init. The “skipper” in charge of this wasMrs. Mathieu, a gym teacher. Therewere f our sailing boats.

They sailed fr om Sète, fr om the"Môle". They stopped in Agde,Gruissan and Puerto de la Salva.

The adults showed the youngsailors how to start the boat, and thenexplained how to manoeuvre it as theysailed. The children took turns. There was food on board each boat, and the pupils had to do thecooking!

THE TOWN

SÈTE is a sunny “ island ” between “ the étang de THAU ” and the Mediterranean Sea. Throughout the centuries the place bore several names : “Mont Setius”, “Cette” and now SÈTE.

In this town, as you stroll along the quays of SÈTE, you can count fourteen bridges (made in stone and in iron). There are 14 kms of beach between Sète and Agde. This nice town is the second harbour in the south of FRANCE.

SÈTE gave birth to such famous persons as Georges Brassens, Paul Valéry and Jean Vilar.

Page 73: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

ART AND EXHIBITIONS

In SÈTE, you can visit several museums:

THE PAUL VALERY MUSEUMYou can see different paintings which represent SÈTE, its life, its

history and its customs. There are models and sculptures too. You can find works of Di Rosa, Desnoyer, Combas: These people are very famous painters of the 20th century.

THE GEORGES BRASSENS MUSEUM This museum recalls the life of the poet and musician. We can hear

about his history with headphones. There are lot of pictures, singles and souvenirs…

In Sète, there are contemporary museums too: they are called “MIAM” and “CRAC”. In these museums, everything is original and modern. According to me, the exhibitions are boring and stupid but sometimes, they are very interesting and funny.

In SÈTE, there are 2 cinemas and 2 theatres:

Page 74: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

THEATRE MOLIERE

It looks like an opera. The stairs are in marble, the curtains and seats are red. The aisles are very large and we can count four floors. It is a nice place.

Le Théatre de La Mer

But I prefer the THEATRE DE LA MER or theatre Jean Vilar. For me, it’s a magic place! Why? Because behind the stage, we can see the Mediterranean sea and the seagulls. It’s very beautiful.

FESTIVITIES

In SÈTE, there are lot of festivities. For example, there is the “CORSO”, it’s a carnival with charts, a fun-fair… It takes place in May.

In July there is a festival (“fête des pêcheurs” or “St Pierre”). People parade in the street with St Pierre’s statue, the fishermen’s patron saint.

But the”ST LOUIS” is the most popular festival in SÈTE. It takes place in August. For this celebration, there are lots of people (inhabitants and tourists). In SÈTE legendary sport is linked to the St Louis: Water Jousting. People are on bleachers on either side of the canal and watch men holding a spear and a shield fight on two little boats. The one who falls down in the water is the looser. the other one is the winner. The game is more complex than this, you must see it to fully understand. The atmosphere is nice and there is lot of music and noise. I enjoy living in SÈTE because it’s

a singular island!

Sailing

There is a nautical base where the Danish and the Swiss team practice for the "America Cup".

Many people have a boat, or know someone who has got one, so sailing is one of the Sète inhabitants favourite hobbies. They can sail on the sea or on the pool.

Volley-ball

There is a club, named "Arago Sète". The players are good. They played in the national tournament. When a match is organised a lot of spectators come to see and support their team.

May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro.

Rowing

There is a rowing club for children and adults. They often practice on the canals.

Swimming

A few years ago, a huge swimming pool was built. People can swim but there are also water fountains and slides. It's a lot of fun. Some tourists, in the summer, prefer going there, although the beach is not far ...

Music

For people who like music, the ”Conservatoire" (the music school) is great. There are classes for everyone (beginners, advanced and expert). A lot of us go there after school and on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Page 78: May 2001. Presentation made by the 3ème Euro. During the last term of the schoolyear 2000-2001, the 3ème Euro class worked under the supervision of their

Sète is a harbour, so most of its “spécialtés” have something to do with fish.

The "Tielle”: It is a sort of pie made with squids ( cut in very small pieces) and tomato sauce. It may sound strange but it is rather good.

Fish soup : In the South of France, nearly each harbour has got a recipe and Sète is not an exception.

The ”Macaronade": Many people came from Italy to Sète in the past centuries. So they brought along one of their special meals : noodles with meat balls and tomato sauce.
