Trueblood, Superintendent Kohler School District Over the years, Ruth diligently kept the district’s books in impec- cable shape. She is an exceptional person: hard working, meticulous, humble, hilarious, genuine, and en- dearing. Ruth’s career began at the She- boygan County Court House in the Auditor's Office. After more than nine years, she was ready for a change and became the book- keeper for the Sheboygan County Handicapped Children's Education Board, known also as Lightfoot School, located in Sheboygan Falls. After Lightfoot School closed, Dr. John Egan, who was superintendent of Kohler Schools at the time, hired Ruth. Twenty- four years later, Ruth retires after 37 years in the field of government accounting. Ruth warmly offered, “I will miss being with the teachers and staff on a daily basis, but I will also miss helping them with their needs – be it in the form of a reim- bursement check, help with a field trip, or offering help with entering a budget request for books or sup- plies. However, I will not miss opening the supply orders in the summer or during the school year. (No it is not just like Christmas, when I open those boxes). My favorite part of the job is keeping record of the cash and monthly reconciliation of the various bank ac- counts. Balancing the books for one month at a time adds up to a full year fast. I will miss the year end annual audit days and state re- porting processes. Auditor days help pull the books together and confirms a full year of work. It’s a good feeling to know I was a part of all the reporting processes and kept things on track for another year. I am proud to be part of a Na- tional Blue Ribbon School, and know I was a part of that process as well.” Ruth looks forward to a “sum- mer off” and taking more time to care for her 85 year-old mother and her needs, and playing with great nephews. With mischievous eyes, Ruth says she will be having her mom and her great grandchildren play together! Many days will find Ruth mak- ing her own jewelry, knitting (making hats and mittens for all), and being part of a handbell choir. Once settled in, painting and home fixing, adding a few flowers to a garden, volunteering more at Beth- lehem Lutheran Church in Sheboygan, and maybe enjoying a trip to Ireland are on Ruth’s horizon. Ruth touchingly shared, “When I first started, Lori Hucke in- vited me to a card club and I got to know a few teachers and their families and felt welcomed to the district. While we don’t play cards anymore, we still get together to reminisce. And, we celebrated a birthday together in Vegas. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! There were also a few shopping trips to Appleton. What happens in Wendy Kukla’s van stays in Wendy’s van!!! I would like to thank current and past administrators, and also the various School Board member’s over the past 24 years, for giving me the opportunity to serve the Kohler School District and Kohler Community.” Ruth Moncrief is an original. We will miss her immeasurably. The school community will celebrate Ruth’s retirement with a dinner gathering, Magic School Bus trip, End-of-Year celebration, and School Board recognition. We wish her the very happiest of days ahead. Ruth Moncrief retires after 24 years of service to the Kohler School District – will close the books on June 30 for the final time Ruth Moncrief

Medal of Honor nominee and formerKohler resident takes honor flightGlenn Dohrmann was wounded three times in Korea

In 1950 Elizabeth “Betty” Roessler ofKohler married Glenn Dohrmann fromShelby, Iowa. The two of them were both inthe military in Fort Ord, California untilthey settled in Kohler in 1954. Betty passedaway in 1968. Glenn remarried in 1969 andthe family left Kohler in 1973, moving toCedarburg where the couple currently re-sides.

Dohrmann served with the U.S. Army inKorea, both before and during the KoreanWar. Though the average length of stay foran officer on the front line in Korea was fourmonths, he served on the front lines for eightmonths. During peacetime Dohrmann wasinvolved in the first free elections in thecountry in 1948.

In a March interview by the Ozaukeepress, Dohrmann said he was shot threetimes during the last battle he fought in and, decades later, was nominated for the Medalof Honor. He received the Silver Star — themilitary’s third highest award for combatvalor — mainly because there were so fewsurviving witnesses to testify to what hadhappened during the battle for Old Baldy,Hill 346, on Oct. 17, 1951.

Dohrmann said that by the time the battlewas over, only 54 of the 200 men in hiscompany were still standing. They spent 14days trying to take the hill, suffering 1,400casualties.

This past April 18, Dohrmann along with44 other Korean War veterans took the Stars

and Stripes Honor Flight to WashingtonD.C. to visit the war memorials on the Na-tional Mall.

Dohrmann’s amazing war stories pub-lished in the Ozaukee Press, as well as thestruggles he faced as a child – beginningwith the loss of his mother during childbirthwhen Dorhmann was two, then the loss ofthe family farm during the Great Depressionwhich drove his father to be temporarily in-stitutionalized – can be found by visitingFacebook.com/kohlervillager.
