Jonathan R. Mawdsley

Early Papers on Entomology

From time to time, I am asked for reprints or copies of some of my very earliest papers on entomology, which were published in the “Young Entomologists’ Society Quarterly” between 1990 and 1994. These papers were written while I was in high school in Lynchburg, Virginia, and while I was in college as an undergraduate at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The papers deal with a broad range of topics, including insect collecting methods, mimicry in beetles, fossil insects, and the taxonomy of checkered beetles (Coleoptera: Cleridae). Many of the articles contain valuable biological information about insect species that are of conservation or management interest. All of these articles were written before I received formal instruction in insect taxonomy, insect morphology, scientific illustration and phylogenetic methods at Cornell University.

The “Young Entomologists’ Society” is no longer extant and the “Young Entomologists’ Society Quarterly” has long been out of production and out of print. Copies of the journal are available in some institutional libraries, such as the Entomology Library at Cornell University, but I am informed by colleagues that copies of these articles are not generally available and are very difficult to find.

Thanks to my good friend and colleague Dr. David G. Furth, now retired from the Smithsonian Institution, I have been able to locate and scan copies of my early articles from the “Young Entomologists’ Society Quarterly.” The attached scans include the following articles (numbers refer to my overall comprehensive list of publications, numbered in order of appearance in print):
