Why does blood move?

Heart beats 72 times every minute

Contracts

Squeezes blood out

Balloon modelL Robson, University of Sheffield

Page 21: Matters of the heart Dr Louise Robson Department of Biomedical Science University of Sheffield L Robson, University of Sheffield

Heart is made of muscle cells

When the heart beats, heart cells

get smaller – they contract.

L Robson, University of Sheffield

Page 22: Matters of the heart Dr Louise Robson Department of Biomedical Science University of Sheffield L Robson, University of Sheffield

Heart cells change size at the same time

When all the cells get smaller at the same time they make the heart

contract.

This squeezes the blood out.
