TECHNOLOGY REDUCES LEAD TIMEThe advanced mould making capabilities of RPC Ace Shanghai has vastly speeded up the lead time for the creation of tooling for a circuit breaker from Schneider China.Previously the development lead time from another supplier for the IMD NW Breaker was three years. However, the introduction of IMD technology at RPC Ace meant this could be dramatically reduced to just one year.

The implementation of IMD tooling manufacturing enabled RPC Ace Shanghai to develop a perfect understanding of the fi rst use of IML technology for engineering parts, as well as the fi rst time creating moulds in a 700 tonnage injection machine and IMD application of engineering resins for the power industry.

RPC Ace Shanghai is now further enhancing and optimising this tooling process and quality fi nish with an internal Instan action procedure, robot and SAP application, and the use of high effi ciency and precision machines such as EDM and CT scanner to confi rm accurate tooling fabrication and modifi cation.

BIOBASED FILM CUTS CARBON FOOTPRINTRPC bpi indupac has introduced an innovative biobased fi lm that helps companies reduce their carbon footprints.The new blown fi lm is extruded in Hardenberg, the Netherlands, and contains at least 40% biobased PE. It retains the same properties and quality of a fossil-based PE fi lm but the incorporation of the green renewable PE helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and therefore the overall carbon footprint. Equally important, the fi lm is still fully recyclable.

A printed version of the fi lm has now been adopted by one of RPC bpi indupac’s longstanding customers for use on Form Fill and Seal machinery for the packing of potting soil.

SILVER FOR SUSTAINABILITYRPC Group has been granted a Silver Recognition Level in the 2017 CSR Rating as part of the Together for Sustainability (TfS) initiative, established by a number of global chemical companies in order to assess, audit and improve the sustainability performance of their suppliers. Among the current 19 members are companies such as AkzoNobel, Henkel and DuPont. Under the scope of TfS, suppliers are both audited on-site and assessed online. The chemical companies then share results of the sustainability performance with a view to improving effi ciency for all involved. As a supplier of strong, sturdy and safe packaging solutions to the chemical industry, RPC Superfos and the RPC Group have more than willingly agreed to participate in the TfS online assessment, as well as on-site audits.

The Silver Recognition follows this online assessment of the Sustainability Profi le of the RPC Group, covering areas including Environment, Labour Practices, Fair Business Practices and Sustainable Procurement. In addition, the RPC Superfos facilities in Lubien, Poland, and at Oakham, United Kingdom, participated in TfS on-site audits, which resulted in only minor fi ndings, meaning the audit attestations are valid for three years.

The standard approach to sustainability performance established by TfS paves the way for synergy so that resources can be used more effi ciently and with a minimum of administrative effort among the member companies and their suppliers.

BESPOKE TUB SPREADS THE GLORYTwo variations of a bespoke tub from RPC Superfos, one featuring a lid from RPC Bebo, are being used for a new spreadable butter from Müller Group, Germany’s largest dairy company. The convenient and attractive tubs were developed and prototyped at the RPC Superfos Innovation Centre in Denmark.

RPC Bramlage has launched a lotion pump that combines a standard system with a customisable outer body. The Lotus pump delivers excellent functionality and user-friendly operation for a wide variety of cosmetic and personal care products while enabling manufacturers to create an individual appearance for effective brand identity and maximum on-shelf appeal.The pump utilises RPC Bramlage’s 30 years’ experience in dispensing. It offers a 1.5ml dose that is achieved with minimal effort by the consumer. Each bottle is created in consultation with the customer to meet individual product characteristics, ensuring the lightest weight of bottle while still providing the required levels of product protection and compatibility. Pump heads can be supplied in the lock down position to maximise shipping and there is a lock up position when there is a need to travel.

One version of the butter, produced for Müller’s premium Weihenstephan brand, features an injection-moulded tub and lid; the other, a private label product, combines an injection-moulded tub with a thermoformed lid from RPC Bebo, complete

with state-of-the-art decoration using the division’s patented pre-printing technology, Bebo Print.

Both packs combine easy handling with a beautiful soft fl owing shape and harmonious combinations of vivid colours to refl ect the delicious taste and outstanding spreadability, even when cold, of the butter inside. The injection-moulded lid features a fl ap that ensures easy and reliable opening and closing, and produces a satisfying click when resealed.

RPC Superfos and RPC Bebo refi ned and made technically feasible an initial design created for Müller Group by an external design agency.

BOTTLES INCORPORATE PCRRPC Envases Madrid has become the fi rst supplier to L’Oréal Europe to produce bottles incorporating

post consumer recycled (PCR) HDPE polymer. Bottles are now being produced for the Redken and Biolage professional haircare brands containing 50% recycled HDPE supplied by BIFFA. On an annual basis, this represents a switch of around 50 tonnes from virgin to recycled material.

L’Oréal has a strong commitment to the use of recycled material and these bottles provide the fi rst example of what is likely to be a signifi cant continuing trend.

At the same time, RPC Zeller Plastik Barcelona, also part of the Bramlage Division, has just been appointed to produce the closure for the Redken bottle with a strong commitment to manufacture the closure using recycled polymer.

A DAIRY DELIGHTA range of organic yoghurts and dairy desserts from Brittany is being packed in attractive and convenient polypropylene pots from RPC Bebo Bouxwiller.Just over three years ago, the Meul'n farm in Maure-de-Bretagne began to produce cheese, yoghurts and desserts from its organic Breton milk. Key to the philosophy of the founders of La Cremerie D’Ana-Soiz, the Liger family, was the manufacture of products that combined quality and tradition, made to natural and organic recipes. Today the company’s products are available both in supermarkets and also school canteens.

BLUE ANGEL ‘FIRST’ FOR SEPARATE WASTE COLLECTIONWaste bins with the Blue Angel ecolabel from ESE World are being used by the Amstetten district in Lower Austria as all municipalities adopt the more environmentally-friendly system of separate collections of bio and residual waste.This marks Amstetten as the fi rst European municipality in Europe to have its entire inventory of bins replaced with the eco-friendly Blue Angel bins.

Although the waste has been collected separately by many municipalities for over 20 years, this is now being extended throughout the district, with the replacement of multi-chamber bins with separate containers from ESE. This will make the system more effi cient, more environmentally-friendly, and therefore more cost-effective in the long term.

The awarding of the Blue Angel ecolabel to ESE confi rms that the containers are made from at least 80% EuCertPlast-certifi ed recycled plastic. At the same time, the use of the recycled material does not affect the performance, quality or longevity of the containers.

ENHANCING FOOD STANDARDSSæplast has extended its range of rugged and hygienic reusable plastic containers for the food processing industry with the introduction of a further size.

The new Sæplast 300PE is a square 800x800mm container with a height of 770mm giving it a net volume of 268 litres. This can be increased to 298 litres with the removal of the handle openings. For ease of access and transportation, the container features fork lift entry on all four sides.

Like all Sæplast containers, the 300PE offers important hygiene, safety and convenience benefi ts to ensure the highest food processing standards. BIG ON ENJOYMENTA new large size 750g pack from RPC Bebo Bouxwiller is providing a generous serving of the Raguin brand of Cancoillotte cheese from French dairy giant Lactalis.The 115mm diameter thermoformed pot is offset printed with strong blue and green branding for the natural and garlic varieties of the cheese. Matching thermoformed printed lids are produced by RPC Bebo Plastik in Bremervörde.

The high-strength pot features effective material distribution to withstand the hot fi lling process. In addition, the pack provides safe and easy handling for the consumer with the convenience of re-closing.

FACELIFT FOR LADIVALPacks for the well-known Ladival sunscreen range have been given a facelift to ensure maximum on-shelf impact in pharmacies ahead of the forthcoming sunbathing season. The key objective for brand owner Stada was to refresh the look of Ladival and give it greater vibrancy. The resulting new design was developed with Take Five Design and produced by RPC Kutenholz.

A lively range with superb shelf impression has been created, comprising a 200ml lotion bottle and two spray bottles – a 150ml size and a 200ml trigger spray especially for kids' products. The fl ip top cap and overcap are produced by RPC Bramlage.

PAIL IS THE NATURAL CHOICE Romanian dairy producer Prodlacta Brasov has appointed RPC Superfos as an additional supplier of plastic packaging. The company chose RPC Superfos because of the quality, service, delivery times and commercial solutions that it offers.Prodlacta Brasov’s natural yoghurt and sour cream products now come in two sizes – 1.18 litres and 5 litres – of the round UniPak pails with plastic handles, as part of a three-year deal. Available in versions containing 12%, 15%, or 20% milk fatness, and aimed at both the retail and foodservice sectors, they are already selling well in Romania, as well as being exported to Moldova.

One of the most extensive ranges in Europe, with a wealth of shapes and sizes for customers to choose from, the UniPak pail keeps costs down through the fact that several sizes match each lid diameter, meaning brands only need to stock one lid for a range of sizes. CLOSURES ADD STYLEAs part of the global relaunch of the KMS Hair start.style.fi nish professional range for salons, RPC Zeller Plastik Germany, part of the RPC Bramlage Division, is supplying new bespoke closure solutions to underline the global style of the new style-prepping shampoos, conditioners and treatments.

RPC Zeller Plastik Lenhausen is producing a customised disktop closure for a soft touch bottle for shampoo and conditioner, and RPC Zeller Plastik Zell is supplying a standard hinged tube closure for laminate tubes for conditioner and styling crème.

In order to fully satisfy its customer’s needs, RPC Zeller Plastik Germany’s R&D team worked closely with its counterparts at KMS Hair’s parent company Kao Germany in the development in particular of the tailor-made disktop solution, at the same time ensuring that both caps achieved the required customised colour in line with the new-look packs.

The injection-moulded closures combine a high quality appearance with the user convenience of easy and accurate dosing to complement the premium image of the KMS brand.

BLACK IS THE NEW BALEWRAPIn response to market demand in France, Ireland and the UK, the popular SilotitePro pre-oriented silage stretchfi lm from RPC bpi agriculture is now also available in black. SilotitePro Black benefi ts from a greater reel length: 1950m instead of the usual 1500m supplied with conventional products. This additional length allows users to produce 30% more bales per reel. The resultant cost savings are further enhanced by a reduction in the number of reel changes necessary, with farmers and contractors wrapping circa 350 bales a day able to save up to 30 minutes.

SilotitePro is available in 100% recyclable polythene sleeve packaging. Made from the same base material (low density polyethylene) as the balewrap itself, the sleeve removes the need for cardboard cartons and can be easily recycled through the same channel as used balewrap thereby aiding waste management on farm.

In the fi eld the stretchfi lm’s excellent puncture resistance, robust characteristics and tack levels provide a tough, high

performance balewrap that delivers better crop conservation due to an increased oxygen barrier and smoother, less wrinkled fi lm layers when applied to the bale.

Established in 1968, the company is today one of North America’s largest packaging manufacturers, with 13 plants across the USA. Letica serves virtually every business-to-business and consumer industry, producing a multitude of pack solutions in rigid and thin wall plastic, paper, post-consumer fi bre and other environmentally-friendly materials utilising thermoforming, injection moulding and paper-forming technologies.

QUALITY STANDARDS CONFIRMEDRPC Astrapak Thermopac has retained its BRC status after a recent audit at its Western Cape plant. This resulted in an AA rating, pending verifi cation from auditing fi rm SAI Global. The achievement was particularly notable as RPC Astrapak CEO Robin Moore explains: “The team has done a fantastic job given all the headwinds and distractions that they have faced surrounding lack of water in the Western Cape and the polymer shortage. They have set a great example of how to operate in adversity and take responsibility back into the business.”

EARLY QUALITY ACCREDITATIONOnly two years after its inauguration, the RPC Superfos US facility in Winchester, Virginia has successfully passed its fi rst BRC certifi cation audit with Grade A in the High Hygiene Category. The audit was carried out by BRC certifi cation body Accredia in autumn 2017.This success provides US customers seeking fi rst-class injection moulded packaging solutions for food and non-food products with independent confi rmation of the site’s high quality standards.

RPC Superfos Winchester produces a range of high quality packaging solutions, including the versatile and popular UniPak container and the multipurpose SuperLift® pail. The facility stretches over 8,000 square meters and features four injection machines.

WATERPROOFING DESIGN SERVICEVisqueen – part of RPC bpi group – has launched a specialist service to ensure that building projects meet the latest stringent standards and regulations for waterproofi ng.The new Waterproofi ng Design Specialists (WDS) from Visqueen Special Projects represent a signifi cant investment by the company to deliver high-level expertise and experience in all types of waterproofi ng, fully backed by relevant guarantees. Visqueen’s design experts have undergone CSSW (Certifi cated Surveyor in Structural Waterproofi ng) training and have Professional Indemnity insurance, providing complete peace of mind both throughout the construction period and following its completion.

The introduction of the bespoke service refl ects the changing requirements for waterproofi ng and the provision of waterproofi ng services in all new below-ground structures. Basements must be designed and constructed to a minimum standard as defi ned in BS8102:2009 – the code of practice for the protection of below ground structures against water from the ground. Structural warranty providers have all produced their own guidance to ensure designs meet all the relevant technical and statutory requirements and, importantly, that they are undertaken by suitably qualifi ed persons.

DEDICATED CUSTOMER SUPPORTWaveGrip, manufacturer of innovative beverage multi-packaging solutions, has launched a dedicated machine manufacturing and engineering support service. Combining all WaveGrip automation, engineering and global servicing capabilities, including its OEM partners, the new WaveTec service will ensure WaveGrip Applicators continue to deliver the best performance to support companies’ multi-packing needs.WaveTec will also give all WaveGrip customers access to a network of technical support across both North America and Europe from two international WaveTec Centres – one in Rochester, MI, USA and another at the WaveGrip head offi ce in Greenock, UK. Established automation operation Letica Corporation, part of the RPC Superfos division, will provide automation solutions for all large customers in North America.
