• How do we know about atoms and elements?

• After all, these are very tiny –too small to see even with a normal microscope.

• Atoms are made of PROTONS, NEUTRONS & ELECTRONS

• Neutrons and protons are located IN the nucleus of an atom

• #2 - How Are Atoms of One Element Similar to and Different from Atoms of Other Elements?    

• SIMILAR:• All atoms, even atoms of different

elements, are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

• DIFFERENT:• Atoms of one element have a different

number of protons in the nucleus than the atoms of a different element.

What Are Ions and Why Do They

Have Different Charges?  • Although atoms of the same element

always have the same number of protons in their nucleus, they can have a different number of electrons.

• The atomic number of an element is also called a proton number. The proton number tells you the number of protons or positive particles in the nucleus of an atom.

• A normal atom has a neutral charge when there are equal numbers of positive and negative particles.

• An atom with a neutral charge is one where the number of electrons is equal to the atomic number or the number of protons.

• Ions are atoms with extra electrons or missing electrons.

• When you are missing an electron or two, you have a positive charge. oThere are more positively charged

protons than there are electrons.• When you have an extra electron or

two, you have a negative charge. oThere are more negatively charged

electrons than there are protons

Student Project• Conduct an investigation of one element on

the periodic table! (100pts)1. Pick an element to investigate2. Illustrate your element’s name, atomic number, symbol and atomic mass3. Research and present some basic information about your element to the class. The presentation can be in the form of a poster, pamphlet, PowerPoint presentation or other form. The presentations should be short and can include: atom’s name, atomic number, where the name came from, when and where it was discovered, natural sources of the element, major uses, and any other information you find important.
