The Coaches

On Dec. 4, 2013 Bo Atterberry was introduced as the 19th head football coach in Southeastern’s 100-plus year history. Atterberry made the move after spending one season as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator. It is the second time he has taken on a

head coaching position, having spent six seasons at Texas A&M-Kingsville prior to his return to Southeastern. “It is an honor to become the head coach at Southeastern,” said Atterberry. “This is a special place to me and it is a big reason that I’m even in the position to take this job. I’m excited to have the opportunity to give back to a place that has given so much to me.” He joined the Savage Storm coaching staff prior to the 2013 season for his second stint as defensive coordinator for his alma mater. Prior to spending the 2013 season in Durant, Atterberry spent six successful seasons at Texas A&M-Kingsville. After taking over the Javelina program in 2007 he went on to compile a 41-28 record over his tenure while guiding TAMUK to a Lone Star Conference Championship in 2009 as well as back-to-back NCAA Division II Playoff appearances. He earned LSC Coach of the Year honors in 2012, as well as AFCA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2010, and was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual National Coach of the Year in 2009. Over his tenure he coached 22 first team All-LSC selections, 16 all-region honorees and 11 All-Americans. This is Atterberry’s second stop as a coach at SE after having served as the team’s defensive coordinator from 2004 through 2006. In those three seasons guiding the Storm defense they won or shared in the LSC-North Division title three times while posting a dominating 13-2 record against league foes in that span. His defense in 2004 led the LSC and was ranked No. 16 in the nation in total defense which helped guide the program to its first ever NCAA Division II Playoff berth. His 2006 defense, the final year if his first stop at Southeast-ern, gave up fewer than 200 points on the season and allowed just 19.2 ppg while leading the conference in pass defense and allowing opposing quarterbacks to complete fewer than half their passes. Under his tutelage for those three seasons nine SE defenders earned First Team All-Lone Star Conference honor, including the 2004 Linebacker of the Year and the 2005 Defensive Back of the Year. Atterberry is a 1998 graduate of Southeastern where he started his coaching career as a student and graduate assistant. He also spent five years working at the high school level, spending four of those seasons in different capacities on staff at Bartlesville High School in Bartlesville, Okla. Atterberry returned to SE as the defensive backs coach in 2003 before moving up to his role as defensive coordinator the following season. He and his wife, April, reside in Durant.

Bo Atterberry Since taking over the Bacone Warrior football program in the spring of 2011, head coach Trevor Rubly has continued to push the Warriors to new heights and looks to continue their upward trend in his fourth season as head coach. In 2013 the Warriors finished their campaign

at 8-3 overall and 4-1 in the Central States Football League; Bacone was ranked as high as 22nd and were also the 2013 CSFL Co-Champions with Southwestern Assemblies of God. Additionally, Bacone boasted a powerful offense attack with the Warriors finishing fifth in pass offense per game and seventh in total pass offense. The defense wasn’t far behind as they ranked 10th in sacks and 11th in total sacks. The Warriors also had 21 selections to the All-CSFL team led by receiver David Chapman who was named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year and produced the first NFL player since the late Don Chandler when Deantre Harlan signed as an undrafted free agent with the Saint Louis Rams. In 2012, Bacone finished 6-3 while playing as an independent; they narrowly missed the NAIA playoffs while going a combined 6-1 against NAIA opponents. The accomplishments didn’t stop there as the Warriors were ranked No. 23 in the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 poll which was a first since 2004; statistically, Rubly managed to turn around a defense that finished 48th in total defense in 2010 to first in 2012. Bacone also ranked third in the NAIA in scoring defense and pass defense efficiency. In his first season at the helm the Warriors finished 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the Central States football league which was good enough for a third-place finish; additionally Bacone had 18 players selected to the 2011 All-CSFL team with four first-team selections, four Warriors also were named to the All-CSFL Academic team. In 2010, serving as defensive coordinator Rubly turned around the Warrior defense as they finished third in the Central States Football League in scoring defense per game. Bacone also ranked second in pass defense and pass defense efficiency per game and finished first in opponents third-down conversions during the 2010 season. The Warriors also had three players make the CSFL All-Con-ference first team and one player on the CSFL All-Conference second team. Prior to Bacone, Rubly served on the coaching staff at the University of Missouri from 2008-2009. During his time there he worked with the Tigers’ defensive line and linebackers. He was also a part of the coaching staffs that made appearances in the Big XII Championship and Alamo Bowl in 2008 and the Texas Bowl in 2009. From 2005-2007, he coached at Cisco (Texas) Junior College where he served as the wide receiver’s coach, the secondary coach and defensive coordinator; Rubly got his coaching start Warrensburg (MO) H.S. in 2004. Rubly graduated from the University of Missouri with a Mas-ter’s degree in Education, School and Counseling Psychology. He also holds an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Central Missouri State, where he played strong safety His wife, Casey, is an elementary school teacher and they have one daughter, Brynn and one son, Truman.

Coach to Cure MD.. Southeastern coaches will be wearing Coach to Cure MD patches for their Sept. 27 matchup with Ouachita Baptist. Coach To Cure MD is a partnership between the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), a professional organization for over 10,000 college football coaches and staff, and Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD), the largest national charity devoted exclusively to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In 2008 the AFCA adopted PPMD’s Coach To Cure MD program as one of their charity efforts. One reason the AFCA was drawn to Coach To Cure MD was because of the unique parallels be-tween Duchenne, a disorder which robs young men of precious muscle strength and college football, a game where young men are at the peak of their muscle strength. The goals of Coach To Cure MD are simple: raise national awareness of the disorder and raise money to fund research for a cure. Our approach to reaching these goals is also simple. One football Saturday of each season (this year it will be on September 28, 2013) AFCA coaches nationwide agree to promote Coach To Cure MD. By wearing armbands, mentioning Coach To Cure MD during on and off-field interviews, and in some instances doing even more extensive media relations around the date, coaches are rolling up their sleeves and proudly getting involved.
