Dear people of God,

Greetings to you in the name of our resurrected Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Yes, the month of March kept us busy with all its activities that really helped us to give our best to the Lord. I believe in the Lord that this month too will be a busy month for us with VBS and other things and we need God’s guidance in all that we do for Him. We hope you will enjoy reading the Interact and extend your prayer support and kind cooperation in the ministry of the Word.

How do we know who somebody is? What is the criteria we use to learn about and know a person? These questions might sound somewhat simple, possibly ridiculous, but they do require an answer. For example, one way we know someone is by title. A principal of a school might have a nameplate on their office door that states the title. A priest might be known as pastor, preacher, or reverend. A medical doctor might be recognized by the title Dr…..It gives us an idea of what the person does.

There is another way of knowing a person and that is his name. Yes, our names reveal our identity to some extent. Our last name tells us our family line. First and middle names can also give clues to families of origin as well. What about nicknames? Yes, they also give some kind of clue about us. Nicknames come from our favorite activities or just from something funny that happened in our lives. Some nicknames come from nothing particular at all, just a funny name. Yes, names and titles are two ways that we begin to learn about someone.

There is also a third way and it is the way we probably value the most and is the most important to us. We know people by what they do in their lives. We watch how people act. The names might identify a person to some degree, but the real character of a person is known by what they do. The true character of a person is known by how they treat others. We know someone by the actions they take, the words they speak, and the love they share.

We know someone as their heart and mind is revealed to us. We want to know if they listen. We want to know if they care. We want to know if

they love. The true person is revealed to us when we see if their words and their actions match.

Jacob in the Old Testament is a best example before us. His name meant one who follows on another's heels; supplanter - Genesis 25:26 ; 27:36. But God changed his name to Israel…Jacob was chosen by God for a special purpose. Notable moments in his life include reconciling with his brother, dreaming about a stairway between heaven and earth, wrestling with the angel of God until he received God’s blessing, and receiving the new name “Israel” from the Lord, which means “contender, fighter” or “God prevails.” He was also the father of the twelve sons from whom the twelve tribes of Israel descended.

The late great English novelist, essayist, and atheist turned Christian, Clive Staples ("C.S.") ("Jack") Lewis (1898 - 1963), in his inspirational writing, "The Weight Of Glory," tells us, "God cannot bless us unless He has us. When we try to keep within us an area that is our own, we try to keep an area of death. Therefore, in love, He claims all. There is no bargaining with Him."

If we are going to exist in the "Heavenly Realm," thinking "Heavenly Thoughts, and being able to discern the Heavenly Mind and heart of Almighty God, we absolutely must give up our own sinful nature - which is controlling us - and, my brothers and sisters, we do that by "Letting go and letting God" take over our lives! Jacob becoming Israel…!

May God bless us as we put our words and speech in deed and truth.

Yours in Christ, Rev. Sebestian Ravi Kumar Associate Pastor

Kingdom Transformation Workshop Objectives : Transformation/paradigm shifts in our understanding of : a) The Gospel : Not only as the good news of salvation, but the good news of the Kingdom b) The Church : Not as the end goal, but as the agent of God’s Kingdom transformation on earth c) The Kingdom of God : Not where we go after we die, but God’s rule and domain that has come to invade and overthrow the devil’s rule on earth d) Our Mission : Not only to evangelize and plant churches, but to be channels of God’s Kingdom transformation to communities and nations bringing justice and shalom Content of workshop • Worldview and its place in culture • Paradigms shifts for worldview change • Worldview and development • Animism, Secularism, and Evangelical Gnosticism • Biblical Theism – worldview of the Kingdom • The Genesis Mandate and the Gospel of the Kingdom • Worldview and poverty • God’s Kingdom transformational approach to poverty Synopsis This is a workshop for those who desire to see God’s Kingdom come and for His will to be done on earth, especially among the poor and the oppressed. This workshop covers only the principles. Our desire is not only that they get out of poverty but that they go on to realize the full potential of what they were created to be, experience the shalom of God and become channels of life and blessing to others. Contrary to what most Christians believe, Jesus did not preach the Gospel of Salvation but the Gospel of the Kingdom. The Kingdom that Jesus kept talking about, is His Kingdom on earth. It is not just about us going to heaven after we die. We are not just saved from hell to go to heaven, but we are saved to enter the Kingdom now, and to be a part of God’s Kingdom advance on earth. This involves not just the salvation of souls, but the Lordship of Jesus Christ over everything on

9

Interact - April 2016

earth. Billions of Christians all over the world pray for God’s Kingdom to come, and for His will to be done on earth as in heaven, yet assume that they have no role in transforming this world. This must change. Jesus said He came to drive Satan out. After He defeated Satan, He said all authority in heaven and on earth had been given to Him. Then He sent us to disciple nations and bring nations into obedience under God’s Kingdom. That means not just personal discipleship but transformation of cultures. Before the Kingdom can come, we need a paradigm shift from an introverted church growth focus to a vision for God’s Kingdom advance on earth. What is the Kingdom of God? What is our role in the advancement of God’s Kingdom on earth? This is a workshop that invites Christians to re-examine what the Gospel really is, what God intended the Church to be, and what task and mission He has for us in this world. When that becomes clear, we then need to look at the poor. Why? Because Jesus told us the poor are priority in His Kingdom. Our call however is not just to acts of charity, but to bring God’s Kingdom transformation to them, and help them break free from the shackles of poverty. This will happen when we have a true understanding of Biblical justice and shalom Summary This workshop consists of 4 parts. The first part seeks to understand what worldview is, and its place in culture. We will see how our worldview shapes what we believe. We will discover that some of our assumptions why the world is the way it is, may need to be corrected. We will also see the consequences of worldviews, in particular the worldviews of animism and secularism. This explains why the world is the way it is. In the second part we will re-examine our Christian worldview. Most Christians have a “salvation from this world” worldview that is heaven focused and church-centered, with no concern for issues of injustice, poverty, corruption, etc. in this world. This must be contrasted with God’s creation mandate and Jesus’ call for us to be salt and light in this world. We need a worldview change/paradigm shift from this worldview with its spiritual/secular divide, to a “Your Kingdom come” worldview that sees God’s Kingdom invading and advancing in every sphere of life on earth. The third part addresses the question of what poverty really is. If we just see poverty in terms of the physical conditions the poor live in, and we do not see the underlying issues, then we will try and tackle only the surface issues but leave the poor trapped in their poverty. When we go into the underlying issues, we will see how poverty has many dimensions – economic, social, political, religious, cultural, physical, and spiritual, all of which interact to keep

Wor

the poor, poor, as they reinforce the worldview and belief of the poor that they are nothing and that they are powerless to change anything. The fourth part proposes an approach to poverty that comes out of our understanding of the first, second and third parts. In the second part, we would have seen what God originally created us for – to be like Him – to be communities of love and justice, that are creative, with order and structure, that work hard and are productive through vision, planning, step by step progression, and that serve one another and share the resources and fruits of our labor. This is abundant life made possible in Jesus Christ. In the third part we would have seen that the roots of poverty stem from a distorted belief of the poor about who they are and what they were destined to be. In this fourth part we look at how we can go beyond traditional approaches to poverty and evangelism, church planting, and NGO projects, to bring God’s Kingdom transformation to the poor. “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as in heaven.”

SIRC working committee meeting for the committee on poor and needy welfare fund of the South India Regional Conference met on 19th March 2016. It was chaired by the district superintendent cum Sr. Pastor Rev. David Nathaniel in consultation with our honorable Bishop Subodh C. Mondal and the same was sponsored by Mr. D. Jeya Singh, the director of the poor and welfare committee, SIRC. The following proposals were approved by our Bishop over the mail for the benefit of deserving candidates.

Adding to the existing poor fund committee of the conference, we decided to take up the new task of free medical consultation and medicines for the deserving candidates. The launching of the new project has been delayed due to various reasons and in the committee meeting on 19th March 2016 attend by about 50 members across the church decided to kick start these programs immediately. We would like to set up a special team for this at the conference and local level as it involves the various tasks such as interviewing the candidates, printing of the ID cards with photograph with serial numbers and the other office work to maintain the records. ID cards and other facilities will help the candidates in getting the job in a more organized manner at the doctor’s clinic and the pharmacies. This facility will be restricted only to doctor’s consultation and medicines and not for the hospitalization or laboratory test.

For further details and suggestions you can contact our associate pastor Rev. Sebastian Ravi Kumar during office hours or over the phone. Interested can join your hands in helping the deserving candidates. We want to concentrate on kids and women who are really having tough time in getting some help in their medical emergencies as the mail folks are away from home or addicted to various things and their family is totally neglected. In this regard we would encourage the housewives who work in their free time for the church and other counseling experts to come forward in helping us to get the job done. This project will be introduced and inaugurated in all the central churches in Bangalore and other districts of the conference. Yes, this program involves lots of coordination and ground work for the successful implementation. Appointing a separate pastor in the conference level for the project also cannot be ruled out as I have requested our honorable Bishop to help us in this regard. A famous and popular quote by Reinhard Bonnke that encourages us to take up the task with passion and full of spirit. He says, ‘“Don’t plan with what is in your pocket; plan with what is in God’s pocket”. Yes, God

is always faithful and our work will not go in vain. We are working on this and we welcome all good suggestions to make the program more meaningful and reachable to deserving people. Don’t ever forget that by doing this you lend to the Lord and He will repay for all your deeds - Proverbs 19.17. Hence I look forward for your kind cooperation, moral and material support. God bless you all.

Children need to be Encouraged- Mrs. Elsie Peter

“Encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” 1 Thess 5:14

It was report card time. Lily rushed home from school to show her grades to her mother. She had ‘A’ in every subject. Her teacher had also added a note which said, Lily is a good student and does all her work well. Lily’s younger sister Rose came little late from school that day and entered her room quietly Hi Rose, where’s your report card? Asked her mother. Rose slowly got out her report card and handed it to her mother. It had a couple of ‘B’s several ‘C’s and one ‘D’. The teacher’s note said Rose does not pay attention in class and does not submit her work in time, I can’t be like Lily said Rose as tears rolled down from her cheek. You don’t have to be like Lily said her mother. I don’t even want you to study just to get good grades. But I do want you to pay attention in class and hand over your assignments on time. When you do that you learn things. That’s the important thing about going to school. But it’s too hard said Rose. If all lessons are easy you wouldn’t learn anything said her mother. You go to school to learn as much as you can. You are not there to do as well as Lily. Rose said “Mom, I know you think that Lily’s report card is always better than mine”. Each person has special abilities said her mother. “Lily is good in school work. You can play ball better than she can. The truth is Lily can still play better and you can still study as hard as you can.” Hugging Rose she said, Daddy and I will help you. We love you. Dear friends among our children some may be intelligent and some may be mediocre. Let us not discriminate them by appreciating those who get better grades and condemning the other. But let us identify the talents that are hidden in our children and motivate them to grow up in them. Just as the body is not made of one part but of many and just as each organ does its function properly, our family is a unit comprising of many individuals, uniquely created by God. So as Christian parents let us teach the importance of this truth to our children.

ON TO EL BETHEL The way back home….!

Then God said to Jacob, Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau. So Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes. Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone - Genesis 35:1-3

So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them. Genesis - 35:4-5

After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram, God appeared to him again and blessed him. God said to him, “Your name is Jacob, but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel. So he named him Israel. And God said to him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants. The land I gave to Abraham and Isaac I also give to you, and I will give this land to your descendants after you - Genesis 35:9-12

Jacob set up a stone pillar at the place where God had talked with him, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it. Jacob called the place where God had talked with him Bethel - Genesis 35:14-15

My own idea, for what it is worth, is that all sadness which is not now either arising from the repentance of a concrete sin and hastening towards concrete amendment or restitution, or else arising from pity and hastening towards active assistance, is simply

bad. --C.S. Lewis
