Learning Opportunities for Grade 8 FI

    Week of May 4 – May 8

School Vision: Motivating, Compassionate, Successful School Mission: Making a difference…. Committed to learning…. Supporting each other

Do the best you can! Focus on life skills, physical activity, mental well-being, creative expression, social responsibility and social connections. Stay healthy and safe! Try to work on the learning opportunities for

    2 hours each day.

Every Day – 30 Minutes of Reading & 30 Minutes of Physical Activity

Math Learning Opportunities Choose from these tasks for a total of 30 minutes a day.

This week is all about Statistics and Probability! If you get stuck, feel free to contact me and I can certainly

lend a hand. Once you feel you have a good understanding of the material, try out the escape room. Can you

beat the clock and escape?!?! Maybe phone a friend and try it together. Have fun! **In an effort to make this document size more manageable, we have added in many links for you to use.

Anything that is blue and underlined is a link to support that particular activity. ** [email protected]

    Play Leprechaun Luck

Leprechaun Luck is a game that is all about probability.

Find the instructions and the game sheets here.

Don’t have a printer? You can quickly draw your own.

Don’t have dice? Just put pieces of paper in two different

containers, one for each dice. Put #1-6 in each container

and you draw one number from each container. Or click

    here to access online dice.

    The Horse Race

Check out The Horse Race game. Give it a try!

It’s great family fun! See if you can be the

    winner!

    Yummy! : Probability with Candy!!

Grab a bag of different colored

candy like skittles or M&Ms and

count how many you have of each

colour. Now put them back in the bag and try to answer

    these probability questions:

    - What is the probability that you will pick a red candy? A

    green one? A yellow one?

Don’t have candy? Use game pieces or maybe even your

    colored socks! Be creative.

Skill Testing Question: Ice Cream Scoops

There are six different flavours of ice cream:

    chocolate, vanilla, mint, strawberry,

    butterscotch, Neapolitan.

How many different ice cream cones can be

made by choosing two scoops from these six

    flavours?

    Want More Probability Warm-ups?

Check out this website for some more probability activities.

    Working with averages

The mean, median and mode are all ways to find an

    average.

Video Lesson: The mean, median and mode toads can

teach you how to find each of these terms.

Or maybe you want to learn through the Mean Median

    and Mode Song.

** You need to know how to find these for this week’s

    Escape Room. **

    Math Practice Questions

Want to try out some practice questions until

you get the hang of it? Click here for some

practice pages that you can try.

We have included the answers for you to check

your work, but remember to try the questions

    first!!

    Online Escape Room

Can you save Han Solo in

time? Are you ready to put

    those probability skills to good

use? Try out this online escape

room: “One In a Million: A Star

    Wars Story.”

Good luck (you’re gonna need it…) and “May the

    Force be With You!”

    Stretch Your Thinking

Try out the UNB Math Competition site for some extra

challenges. It’s always good to challenge yourself to go

above and beyond when you can.

    Games & Puzzles

    Remember that a lot of

    games you have sitting

    around your house

    include math skills.

Card games: Crib, War, Crazy 8’s, Go Fish, Uno

    Board Games: Monopoly, Life, Yahtzee,

    Battleship, Checkers, Chess

Puzzle Games: Sudoku, Word Searches, Code

    Breakers

    Jigsaw Puzzles

Puzzles are another great use of math skills. Just don’t be like Mrs. Miller where you finish

the puzzle only to discover there is ONE PIECE MISSING!

Science Learning Opportunities Choose from these tasks for a total of 30 minutes a day.

This week we focus on Space: “May the Fourth be with you!” Pick any of the activities you’d like to try. There are

several links within the document to help you out. Remember that science is all about discovery and trying to find out

how and why things work. Don’t be afraid to make your observations by taking pictures or videos and send them to me

so I can post them on the class website. Have fun!

    [email protected]

What does May the Fourth be with you mean?

May the Fourth be with you is the

catchphrase of Star Wars Day on May 4th,

the unofficial holiday celebrating the Star

Wars franchise. It is a pun on a famous line

from Star Wars, May the Force be with you!

May the 4th Be With You!

    Our Solar System

    Research and explore

    the planets of our Solar

    System. There’s a lot to

    learn about space!

There are even great Solar System Songs to learn

    about Planets Around A Star!

Why Do We Have Day and Night?

Learn about why we have day and night? (Hint: It’s all about

    Earth’s rotation.)

Why Do We Have Changing Seasons?

Have you ever wondered why we have four seasons

in New Brunswick, but in other places they have two:

wet and dry? Check out this link to learn more.

Here is a video that delves into the concept a little

    more.

    Solar Eclipses

What is a solar eclipse? Check out this video for more information.

The next solar eclipse will be seen in Eastern Canada on April 8th, 2024. Check out this news article

about it! We could be perfectly in the path of totality to see this one! Check out what it will look

    like in your area.

It has also been announced that famous astronaut Chris Hadfield will be visiting an area pretty

close to us for the event.

    Moon Journal

Keep a journal of the phases of the moon over the next few

weeks by drawing what the moon looks like every night or every

couple of nights. What do you notice?

Add a little fun with a tasty way to

    represent what you’ve learned! Try

to replicate the moon phases using

    Oreo cookies Yum!

Get your groove on with phases of

    the moon or moon phases.

Build a Model of the Solar System

Put your artistic skills to work! Using things you can

Art in the Night Sky: Constellations

Have you ever taken the time to look at the night sky? What do

you see? In the past, people would use the stars to tell stories

or trace the outlines of mythical beings in the stars. These were

    called constellations.

Head outside for a night this

week and see if you can find

    some May constellations in

    the night sky.

There are some apps that help you identify what you are

looking at in the night sky. See if you can find one that works for

    you!

Draw some constellations of your own. What do you see when

you look at the night sky? What stories do you see in the stars?

    Comets

Check out this video to learn more.

Try out your artistic side and make your own comet

    on a stick!

Podcast Listen to this Podcast from ReadWriteThink, titled Life Stories

    Episode 58 – Life Stories

Life stories are books that trace defining moments and turning points in people’s lives. By

exploring how individuals overcome obstacles and discover their passions – or fall prey to

mistakes and inner demons – life stories illustrate how human beings navigate the complexities

of living. Tune in to hear about a variety of life stories – some that celebrate lives of success,

others that mourn lives tragically lost or wasted.

    Writing Prompts –

    Choose One

    1) Write a letter to your principal attempting to persuade them to make a change you think is necessary in your school.

    2) Write about the most excruciating pain you have ever felt. Use sensory details (sight, sound, taste, touch, smell).

    3) Reflect on the following quotation: “Only surround yourself with people who will lift you higher.”-Oprah Winfrey

    4) Who is someone you admire? What makes this person so admirable? 5) Write about a topic about which you know more than most people. 6) Tell the story of the funniest thing that has ever happened in one of your

classes. 7) Imagine you are in quarantine and you are sitting at home one day. You hear

someone shrieking in the living room. They see a mouse in the house! Write a story about what might happen next.

    8) Write a sequel to one of your favorite fairy tales. For example, what happened to all the dwarves in Snow White? What was Goldilocks' next adventure after she left the three bears?

    9) A tall tale is a story that exaggerates something that may or may not have happened. Write a tall tale about something that happened to you. The good news? In a tall tale you can exaggerate and lie! How big and outlandish can your story become?

    10) I peeked through the curtains. There was a limo parked outside with two bodyguards. I heard a knock on the front door.....

    11) A fictional narrative story choice of your own!

MCS Physical Education at Home: May 4th – 8th

Hello there everyone! I hope that you are all getting outside and keeping active. That can look very different with a variety

of activities that you can be involved in. Here are some activities for the week. Do your best!

    [email protected]

Monday - It’s all about jumping and coordination.

    - Find a box that you can jump out of. Start inside the box and jump out. If that is too easy then get a higher box to

attempt. Measure and record the highest box you can jump out of.

    - Set up a series of boxes that get higher and see if you can do a continuous jump in and out of the boxes without stopping.

    - Skipping in a row without missing

    - Line jumps in a row before stopping

    - Standing long jump (as far as you can go and record it)

    Tuesday - Target Tuesday Throwing

*Try different types of throws: overhand, underhand, side arm (using what type of throw can you throw the farthest?)

*Throw different items, Frisbee, ball, football, crumbled paper, (which goes farther?)

*Use boxes from yesterday as targets from various distances. How many times out of 10 can

you get the object in the box? How can you make it harder? Smaller box? , longer distance?

Wednesday - Get outside and go for a walk. Walk the dog, walk a parent!

Thursday - It’s flyer day! Use a page from a flyer and try these activities

*Hold the page in front of you and start running as fast as needed to keep the page from falling. Can you do a lap around

the house, no hands on the paper?

*Can you go a shorter distance and change direction quickly without it falling?

*Use a page and let go of it from eye height, can you do a push-up or a burpee and catch it before it hits the ground.
