Learning Opportunities for Grade 8 FI

Week of May 18-22

School Vision: Motivating, Compassionate, Successful School Mission: Making a difference…. Committed to learning…. Supporting each other

Do the best you can! Focus on life skills, physical activity, mental well-being, creative expression, social responsibility and social connections. Stay healthy and safe! Try to work on the learning opportunities for

2 hours each day.

Every Day – 30 Minutes of Reading & 30 Minutes of Physical Activity

A Note From Your Teachers!

This week is all about fishing! Be sure to let us know how you make out if you get a chance to go fishing.

Check out some of your teachers who enjoy fishing as well.

Mrs. Bird likes to get out fishing with her kids whenever

she can. Her husband and kids enjoy fly fishing. She

prefers the brooks. There’s nothing like being outside in

the fresh air and sun!

Mr. McKinley is spending his time chasing around a little “Baby Shark”. Can you guess who it might be?

Mr. Clark enjoys sharing his love for fishing with his kids! I

wonder who’s the best fisherman? Ava’s looks pretty big! I

think Mr. Clark might have some competition!

It looks pretty chilly wherever it is Mrs. Miller is fishing!

Hopefully the weather will cooperate this week for you all

to get out fishing if you can!

A view of the Saint John river from Mademoiselle Shaw's house. Can you guess

what type of fish you might find in there?

Math Learning Opportunities Choose from these tasks for a total of 30 minutes a day.

This week is all about Fishing Fun! If you get stuck, feel free to contact your teacher.

Try out the escape room. Can you beat the clock and escape?!?! Maybe phone a friend and try it together. Have fun!

Multiplication Practice

Try out your multiplication skills in the Fish Shop

Multiplication Game

Fisherman’s Luck

Fishing for the Right Fish

Put your probability skills to the

test!

Go Fish!

Play a game of Go Fish!

Try this modified version called Tens Go

Fish! Could you be the winner?

Tasty Graphs

Do you have a bag of

rainbow goldfish

crackers or some other

coloured snack? Sort

out the colours and

create a graph. What do

you notice?

Compare two bags. Are

they the same?

Can you figure out the probability of picking each colour?

Fish Sampling

Check out the fish sampling activity. It combines math

and science together! If you don’t have goldfish crackers,

just use any other small item you have several of that you

can either mark on, put a sticker on, or mark in some way

to make it different so it can be identified.

Get Mike the Trout Home! – Escape Room

See if you can avoid the fishermen and escape to freedom!

Something Fishy Puzzle

Can you solve the puzzle? Try the online match fish and

more match stick puzzles.

Fancy Fish!

Do you like this fish art? It’s actually a mathematical

concept called a Tessellation!

Try colouring your own

Fish Tessellation

A Little Review Material

To complete Mr. McKinley’s Fishing Escape Room you’ll

need to know how to add, subtract, mulitply and divide

integers. If you need a refresher, or aren’t quite sure how

to do these maybe ask a parent or older sibling for some

help or check out some videos and visuals online like the

one attached.

You also need to remember how to find the area of shapes.

Go Fishing! And while you are out, think about these questions….

Cast Away!

Practice casting your fishing rod in a safe space away from others where you won’t hook

anyone or anything. Take a tape measure and check the length of the line you cast out. If

you don’t have a tape measure use something else to measure like shoes or a stick. What

is the average distance you can cast? What was your longest cast? Your shortest cast? If

you don’t have a fishing rod, try tossing something like a ball or toy and measure that

distance.

Page 4: Learning Opportunities for Grade 8 FI Week of May 18-22 School …web1.nbed.nb.ca/sites/ASD-W/mcs/Teachers/Documents/Grade... · 2020-05-17 · School Mission: Making a difference…

4

Estimate and Measure Fish!

If you are able to get out fishing and are lucky enough to

catch some, measure your fish to see how long they are.

Remember, the ones that are

too small need to be put back

so be careful removing the

hook. We need them to grow

big for next year! If you can’t

get out to a pond, try out your

estimating and measuring

skills on these fish.

Worm Measuring - Speed required for this one!

Catch some worms or night crawlers.

Put them on your deck or driveway for a short time and

see if you can measure them. You’ll have to be quick! You

may end up having to estimate their length. What is the

difference in their measurement when they stretch out vs

when they pull back together? Be sure to put them back

on the grass or in the garden when done.

Science Learning Opportunities

Choose from these tasks for a total of 30 minutes a day.

This week we focus on Fishing Fun! Pick any of the activities you’d like to try. There are several links within

the document to help you out. Remember that science is all about discovery and trying to find out how

things work. Don’t be afraid to make your observations by taking pictures/videos. Have fun!

Fish Superpowers!

Check out the following fish adaptations!

What other adaptations can you think of that help fish

survive in their environment? What about adaptations of

other animals?

I know you love hearing the Adaptations song in class! Go

ahead and sing along!

Worms or Nightcrawlers?

Want to catch some fish? You’ll need night crawlers and

worms! What is the difference? How do you catch them

and how do you find them?

Test your luck and see how many night crawlers or

worms you can find!

When it’s raining, rumour has it Mr. Clark goes to the

school parking lot to get his worms for fishing and Mrs.

Bird gets them off her driveway. Why would the worms

be there?

Fishing for suffixes:

Writing – Tall Tales Tall Tales - An extravagant, fanciful, or greatly exaggerated story. Usually focuses

on the achievements of the ultimate hero. They are also sometimes called “fish

stories”

Sample:

https://americanfolklore.net/folklore/2010/08/furbearing_trout.html

Have you ever had someone exaggerate a story to make it more fun, make

themselves more heroic or try to illustrate an impact of an adventure? Has Dad

ever told of the 6-foot fish? The one that “got away?”

Write a tall tale about a fishing expedition. You can be the main character or

someone you know or even a fictional character. What happens on their fishing

trip? It needs to be unbelievable but written in a way that the reader can live

and believe the story.
