Dear Students,
We are here to help you. If you have outside
responsibilities or other potential barriers to completing
the work for this course, please come talk to me as soon
as possible. Don’t wait until it is too late to get help.
If you have any disability, either temporary or permanent, which might affect your ability to participate
fully in the course, please let me know right away. Disability Programs & Services can provide the
necessary accommodations for equitable participation.
We believe that every single one of you can do well in
this class. In fact, we expect you to come with your
game face on, to try your best, to put as much into this
class as you can and get as much out of this class as you
can. We expect you to challenge yourself first and then
ask me for help when you need it, to ask and offer help
to your classmates, and most importantly to work with
us to ensure your success.
Lastly, we want to stress that ALL students are welcome
in our classes, regardless of national origin, religious
affiliation, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age,
physical challenges, socioeconomic status, or cultural
background. Let us work to make our classrooms an
environment marked by kindness and mutual respect for
one another. It is our differences, even more than our
similarities, which offer the richest opportunities for
learning.

GRADING
Your grade will be composed of the following different categories:
Homework: The homework for this class will be based on handouts and the completion of the ALEKS pie.
ALEKS is a resource you can access at the Math Success Center, library, home, or anywhere you have internet
access. There will also be 7 activities (DLAs) that you will be expected to complete. These activities are only
found at the Success Centers.
Participation: You will earn participation points for participating in the in-class activities.
Assessments: We will have 3 assessments throughout the term. There may also be quizzes administered
throughout the course to make sure everyone is staying current on the topics at hand.
FINAL EXAM: The final exam will occur at the end of the course and will be cumulative (meaning it will
cover everything we do in this class). If your final exam score is higher than your lowest test score, then your
final exam score will replace your lowest test score.
The breakdown of the grades is as follows: Your final grade will be based on the overall breakdown: A: 90-100% B: 80-89.9% C: 70-79.9% D: 60-69.9% F: Below 60%

Academic Integrity:
Integrity is an essential component of the student academic experience. The integrity students
learn and exhibit at Chaffey College will be a model for the professional integrity they practice
when they complete their college work. Students are expected at all times to act in a manner
consistent with Chaffey College’s Student Academic Integrity Code and Student Behavior
Code. A student’s failure to act in a manner consistent with Chaffey College’s Student
Academic Integrity Code and its Student Behavior Code shall constitute good cause for
discipline, including but not limited to removal, suspension or expulsion. You can access the
student handbook here:

A Quick Note About Grades:
Grades aren’t the only reason to study and work hard in a
class—curiosity and the desire to learn are very good reasons
that often get overlooked. The fact that no one can take our
education away from us is another good reason as well.
However if grades are one of the things that help motivate you,
then here are some things I have learned from watching
students about how to sabotage yourself, on the one hand, and
how to get high grades, on the other…
To reach your goal of an “A” in the course, if grades are
important to you:
Check your Chaffey email regularly
Work on ALEKS consistently
Come to class on time, every day and stay for the entire class session
Intentionally watch videos posted online
Take good, organized notes on class lectures
Build a study group to discuss class activities, DLAs, homework, and prepare for exams
Meet with your instructor whenever there is confusion
Make frequent visits to the Math Success Center
Practices that will make it difficult for you to pass the class, if
that is your goal:
Not working on ALEKS
Not checking your school email Coming to class late
Leaving class early
Not coming to class
Only showing up for the exams and thinking that will be enough to pass
Not showing up for the final exam
Not visiting the Math Success Center

At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Perform operations (and conversions) involving signed fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals; simplify square roots. 2. Analyze, solve, simplify, or evaluate linear algebraic expressions and equations. 3. Translate a verbal description (and/or application problem) into a mathematical statement/equation.
This course has been deemed certified by the MATHSway Committee. We are committed to reinvigorating your hidden passion for math and helping you develop skills that will give you direction towards success and that you can take and use in any class.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
Assessment and LEarning in
Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based,
artificially intelligent assessment and
learning system.
ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to
quickly and accurately determine
exactly what a student knows and
doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then
instructs the student on the topics she is
most ready to learn. As a student works
through a course, ALEKS periodically
reassesses the student to ensure that
topics learned are also retained.
ALEKS also provides the advantages
of one-on-one instruction, 24/7, from
virtually any Web-based computer for

Chaffey College has adopted "hope theory" and "mindset thinking" as a way to improve the success of our students. As stated in this model, "hope can be thought of as the ‘will power’ to move toward action as well as the ‘way power’ or the pathway that will lead to goal achievement."
Many of you may be able to improve your success in mathematics by adopting a high hope/growth mindset in your own life, in order to
tackle difficulties that have previously seemed unattainable.
Campus Resources For This Class MATH 520 PROFESSORS There is a conglomerate of Math professors who are a part of the MATHSway

FELLOW CLASSMATES One of the key aspects of learning Mathematics is to be able to treat it as a
language. One of the best ways of developing language skills is to practice by
communicating with other people. Working with your classmates can be an
invaluable opportunity. Meet at the Math Success Center, meet at the library,
talk before/after class. Just talking about math will not only help with your
understanding, but your fellow classmates as well.

Please Be Open to Participating Fully in Class!
I believe that students learn best when presented with a variety of teaching strategies. Not
everyone will like every strategy; to paraphrase Lincoln, you can’t make everybody happy
all the time. However, given the absolute stranglehold the lecture format has on college
classes, I still think it is valuable to try out a variety of activities in the classroom.
As much as is possible given the constraints of time and room setup, classroom activities
will be organized with a hands-on approach, asking students to engage with the instructor
and each other.
Research shows that people learn better when they are actively involved in the learning
process. In order to facilitate this, you will be asked to participate in various activities and
discussions. If you are usually a talker, then your challenge will be to listen more and talk
less. If you are usually quiet or an observer, your challenge will be to take risks and speak
up from time to time.
