Catholic Life and Faith February, 2016 Stewards of God’s Mercy by Leisa Anslinger

Traditionally, our Lenten observance includes prayer, fasting, and almsgiving (or works of charity). These three practices turn our heart and mind to God, our attention to our need for God’s love in our lives, and actions toward those who are most in need. Keep mer-cy in mind this year in your Lenten undertakings: Pray: Use Psalm 145 (see sidebar) or pray spontaneously this season. Ask the Lord to open your heart to receiving and giving merciful love this Lent. Fast: We often focus on giving up meat on Fri-day and other days as our practice of fasting during Lent. The practice of fasting, however, is meant to be more than going through the motions. Fasting should involve something that reminds us of our hunger for God — physical hunger calls to mind our spiritual hunger.. From what might you fast this season in order to be more available to God, physically and spiritual-ly? Act: There are many in our world who need to know God’s merciful love. Perhaps there is someone in your family who is in need, materially, emotionally, or spiritually. We may be tempted to put a few extra dollars in the Sunday offering and consider this our Lenten almsgiving. Yet, in our hearts, most of us rec-ognize that there are many who may only know God’s mercy, forgiveness, or compassion through our ac-tions. Risk offering mercy this season, personally, ac-tively, with humility and compassion. Look at the list of corporal and spiritual works of mercy at the bottom of this page. Determine one (or more!) that will re-quire you to go beyond what is comfortable, as a sign of solidarity with the recipient, in unity with Christ and the Christian community. Why are People wearing ashes? This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent. We wear ashes as a sign of our desire to repent from the evil in our lives and in our world. What is Lent? Lent is the 40 days before Easter, during which Christians prepare to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Traditionally this preparation includes prayer, fasting and almsgiving as ways of recommitting our lives to Christ’s gospel. How do we recommit our lives to Christ’s Gospel? We recommit our lives to Christ’s gospel by making choices for justice and against evil. During Lent we should make a special effort to be more aware of how we choose and what we choose. Fasting and abstinence Days of Abstinence: No meat can be eaten on Ash Wednesday and all of the Fridays during Lent. This applies to all Catholics 14 and older. Days of Fast: Only one full meal is permitted on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday for Catholics between 18 and 59. Two smaller meals are permitted but the small meals should not equal a second full meal. Drinking coffee, tea and water between meals is allowed. Snacks between meals are not allowed. Penance - If you haven’t gone to confession in a while, Lent is the perfect time to reconcile yourself with God and the Church.
