Spiritual Reflec!on

Reflec!on for Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021 - Msgr. John Unger

A Spiritual Reflec!on for the Feast of Easter First of all, I want to wish you a blessed and happy Easter on behalf of Deacon Wi#e, Msgr. Mosley and myself, Msgr. Un-ger. The tomb is empty and Jesus is alive. St. Ma#hew in his Gospel tells us that Joseph of Arimathea, a secret follower of Je-sus, asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. He buried him in his own new tomb. Someone said that Joseph’s friends asked him why he would give up his new tomb to this penniless preacher, who was just executed as a criminal? Joseph’s answer was “not to worry. It’s just needed for the weekend.” Well, that is not a biblical story and is probably not true but it does re-mind us that Joseph of Arimathea was a believer. Interes!ngly that tomb is s!ll empty. No one else has ever been buried in that tomb. 100 years a'er Jesus died the Ro-man emperor Hadrian filled in the en!re area and built a pagan temple dedicated to Venus over the spot. 200 years a'er that Constan!ne tore down the temple, excavated the area and found the tomb just where the Chris!ans told him it would be. Today the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is built over the tomb of Jesus. Today we profess our deep faith in the resurrec!on of Jesus. May it be a source of deep strength for each of us. Let me tell you two stories about belief in the resurrec!on. They are two of my favorites. The first story is about Winston Churchill. Winston Churchill was a Chris!an and a believer in the power of the resurrec!on; in fact, he arranged his own funeral. His funeral took place in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. There were stately hymns and an impressive liturgy. A'er they gave the final blessing, he had arranged for a bugler high in the dome of St. Paul’s Cathedral on one side to play “Taps,” the universal signal that the day is over. But when that was finished, there was a long pause and then a bugler on the other side played “Reveille,” the signal of a new day beginning. It was Churchill’s way of communica!ng his belief in the resurrec!on and the beginning of a new life in heaven. Winston Churchill was a believer in the resurrec!on. But the most powerful story for me happened in the year 1982. George Bush was the vice president of the United States. President Reagan sent him to Russia to a#end the funeral of the Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. Bush later wrote that he was deeply moved by a silent protest carried out by Brezhnev’s widow. She stood mo!onless by the coffin un!l seconds before it was closed. Then, just as the soldiers touched the lid, Brezhnev’s wife performed an act of great courage and hope, a gesture that must surely rank as one of the most profound acts of civil disobedience ever commi#ed: She reached down and made the sign of the cross on her husband’s chest. There in the citadel of secular, atheis!c power, the wife of the man who had run it all hoped that her husband was wrong. She hoped that there was another life, and that life was best represented by Jesus who died on the cross, and that the same Jesus might yet have mercy on her husband. Wow, what an act of bravery in the citadel of atheism. But what a greater act of faith she had in the resurrected Jesus. She was a believer. Today we are reminded to glory in the power of the resurrec!on. That is why this is the greatest of our religious holy days. They said he was dead, over and done with, but they were wrong. So, the news spread from Mary Magdalene to Peter to the rest of the disciples, to the 500, to the 3000, and to people of every century and eventually to all of us here this Easter. We celebrate and pro-claim that he is the first to rise from the dead and we, his authen!c disciples, will follow him. We are believers.
