‘Tis Good, Lord, to Be

Here was written on the feast of

the Transfiguration in 1888 while

the author was at Cambridge. It

is based on Luke 9:32-33 and

was first published in the 1904

edition of Hymns Ancient and

Modern. The tune, SWABIA,

was first published in Johann

M. Speiss’ Davids Harpffen Spiel

(Heidelberg, 1745) to fit hymns

in the meter 67.67.77. William

H. Havergal adapted the tune to

short meter and included it in his

Old Church Psalmody (London,

1847). All hymns have a metric

scheme. In the case of 67.67.77,

the hymn would have 6 syllables

in the first line, 7 syllables in the

second line, etc. Short meter is

66.86, six syllables in the first two

phrases, eight syllables in the

third and six in the last phrase.

We do not know who

wrote Psalm 116, but we do

know that God saved him from

death. This is the fourth of the

six Egyptian Hallels. The Hallels

are Psalms 113-118, and they are

called “Egyptian” because they

remember the story of God saving

his people from Egypt. But this

psalm is about one man’s trou-

ble, not the trouble of the whole

country. It is a “hallel” because the

word “hallelujah” is in verse 19,

which we are NOT singing today!

Dear SJN Family,

The Gospel today speaks to us of the power of prayer. Jesus ascends Mt. Tabor with Peter, James and John and is transfigured before them. A cloud descends, and a voice is heard: “This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him” (Mk 9:7). The “high mountain” (Mk 9:2) signifies the ascent to God. Moses and Elijah represent the Old Testament. Pe-ter, James and John symbolize the New Testament. The cloud reminds us of the Holy Spirit, which came upon Our Lady at the Annunciation (cf. Lk 1:35). The voice is that of God the Father, stringing togeth-er the biblical pearls of Gen 22:2, Ps 2:7, Dt 6:4 (the Shema) and Dt 18:15, revealing that Jesus is the long-awaited Prophet, Messiah, and eternally beloved Son of God. The Gospel, then, is speaking to us about prayer, and hearing the voice of Jesus in the Sacred Scriptures. The Dictatorship of Noise

All of us would like to pray better, but there is a common obstacle we face, what Cardinal Robert Sarah calls “the dictatorship of noise.” The phone, 24 hour news, emails, games, snapshots, tweets, texts, and chats – never is our mind at rest. Mother Adela Galindo writes, “Without silence the greatest mysteries of God’s love are lost. Noise, loudness, is becoming the greatest enemy of our spiritual life and our prayer life. How can we see all that was being revealed on the Way of the Cross if we are part of the crowd that was talking and distract-ed while Jesus passed by? [. . .] If we do not know how to be silent, Jesus will never be able to make His home in our hearts, because our homes will be full of our own thoughts, interests and projects, [and] we will not be able to recognize the one knocking on the door.”

The Power of Silence

We need to listen to Jesus. Before thinking, “But, Father, this is im-possible . . .” please consider a simple daily practice. First, find a time and a place to pray that is without external noise. This is your moun-tain. If you cannot pray at home, come to the Adoration Chapel which is open 24-7-365. Second, instead of looking at your phone when you get up, prayerfully read the Gospel from the previous Sunday for five minutes. Ask yourself, “What does the Gospel say, what is it describ-ing? And what is it saying to me?” Ponder it as you get ready. Then, before going to work, stop by the Adoration Chapel for 10 minutes. Give the Lord five minutes without words. Just be. Then return to the Gospel text. And ask Him, “Lord, how can I respond to Your word?” Listen for five minutes. Make your resolution. You are on your way.

January 18, 2018

Dear Family and Friends,   I hope that this new year finds you well.

After much anticipation, I am excited to say that a date has been set for my ordination to the Diaconate.  On Thursday, September 27th at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. I and forty other men of my class will be ordained deacons for the Church.

Over these last few months of preparation I would be so grateful for your continued prayers.  You offer me a source of motivation during this time; it will be the greatest privilege for me to serve you in ordained ministry.      For those of you who are able to join me for this occasion, I have worked with a DC agency to assemble a tour package; the details for this pilgrimage are attached in a brochure.  Please let me know at your earliest convenience if this would be something you are interested in.  I fully realize the challenge that this trip would be for many, and I am most grateful for the accompaniment of your prayers from home.     May the Lord bless you in this new year with the gift of His peace and joy!     Yours ever in Christ,
