LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE

Today we celebrate the Nineteenth Sunday in Ordi-nary Time. In recent weeks, we have heard Moses grumbling to God about the people he has been asked to lead. Today it is Elijah who sends up a prayer to God and says, I have had enough. I take comfort in a read-ing like this, because we have all been there. If you are in a posi on of responsibility you know the feeling. Parents dealing with children. Older parents dealing with older children. Children caring for older parents. Bosses overseeing employees or offices. Pastors lead-ing parishes, or principals leading schools. The list goes on and on. God’s response in these cases is take care of what you can first, but then I will provide what ever else you need. That is part of St. John’s “Bread of Life” discourse. God is always ready to provide for our needs.

This past week Cardinal Cupich and the COVID Task Force of the Archdiocese have asked that masked be worn in all buildings of the Archdiocese. This in-cludes churches, schools and offices. We are all red like Moses or Elijah, but we can not give up the re-sponsibility for safety for ourselves and each other as we try to end the COVID pandemic. The Cardinal again asks that we all get vaccinated, yet now also realizes that isn’t enough. Masking and distance are two more ways that we can slow the progress of the disease. We have included a le er in this bulle n from the Archdio-

cese COVID task force. Lets work together to put this crisis behind us.

Thanks to all the Ministers of Care who were able to join us last week for our first mee ng together. There was good conversa on and everyone is excited about ge ng back into the ministry if we can. Since the mee ng, the cases of COVID are increasing, so once again we may not be able to begin immediately. Many healthcare facili es, and hospitals are once again pu ng in restric ons for visitors. We will moni-tor those facili es and begin visits when allowed. A number of people are willing to go into the home, but also everyone needs to understand the Minister will be wearing masks, and some mes gloves if appropriate. The safety of the minister and those they visit is the most important guideline. We have also had inquiries about once again beginning the St. Juliana SPRED pro-gram. It may also have to wait a bit longer as we try and navigate the present COVID situa on.

Finally, today the St. Vincent DePaul Society is

sponsoring a back to school drive for school supplies in

the back of church for those in need. If you are able to

help your gi will be most appreciated. Thank you to

all who par cipate!

CIVIL DISCOURSE

“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephe-sians were doing in the me of Paul, that is, figh ng, shou ng, reviling each other with fury, anger, and mal-ice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconcilia on? The Eu-charist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR SEMINARIANS AND DEACONS

Hola from the Diocese of Cheyenne and Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church! I hope you all have been enjoying summer me at Saint Juliana’s. Although a part of me misses seminary and being in Illinois, it has been a very meaningful past couple of months here in Casper, Wyoming. A part of my summer that has had a significant impact on me has been spending me with three religious sisters from Mexico (from the Order of the Child Mary), who are staying here for five years with a mission to serve community members who primarily speak Spanish. Although I knew a li le Spanish before this summer, it’s a new level of communica on when I have three nuns talking to me in Spanish and I get to figure out what is going on!

Although many of my conversa ons involve me trying to put together simple sentences or poin ng to objects and asking, “Cómo se dice ____” (“How do you say ____?”), I have found there is a rela onship that can s ll be formed with someone just by listening and offering a smile, even if I don’t understand everything. Hearing stories about coming to the United States and their desire to develop a rela onship with our Lord through the Catholic Church has inspired me to see how I can help our community con nue to cast the net wide and make sure everyone knows about the truth, goodness, and beauty of Catholicism.

Apart from brushing up on my Spanish, I have enjoyed some of my favorite western ac vi es, including fishing, hiking, and a couple of horseback rides. However, I am most grateful to feel welcomed into the lives of our parishioners here. Much like at St. Juliana’s, it has been a privilege to serve Mass and be with families through the ups and downs of life. From the highs of bap sms to the lows of funerals, it is powerful to see the grace and mercy of Christ at work. The combina on of rest, prayer, and work in Wyoming has been good to me, but I am looking forward to seeing you all again this fall.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigra ng to America. They bought a house in Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direc on of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the “pious ladies,” as the neigh-bors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visita on Order founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible rou ne, less arduous and more flexible than most tra-di ons, and also accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visita on be-gan without reference to the “rule” of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the “reign of terror,” and the rules and customs of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied. (No religious wore the habit in public in the United States un l a er the Civil War.) From the begin-ning, the Georgetown nuns had an educa onal mis-sion, even though they discovered in the “rule” that such work was officially off-limits for the contempla-

ve life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visita on is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic educa on, and the adjacent monastery is the oldest monas c founda on in the original thirteen United States. —Rev. YOUR WORSHIP AID

CONFITEOR

I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, (strike breast) through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

GLORIA

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to peo-ple of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

SUNDAY

The second reading of Paul to the Ephesians talks about forgiving one another. It reminds me of the line in the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” (Mt 6:12) You could read that line as a warning that God only forgives those who forgive others. Paul reverses that condi onal meaning to say that we forgive because God has already forgiven us. So which came first, the chicken or the egg?

In a sense, both are needed: Jesus died on the cross to show that God forgives sins you haven’t even commi ed yet. But God does not force his forgiveness on us. It is a gi , given freely. We have to want to be forgiven and accept that gi from God. And we also have to be willing to forgive those who have hurt us. There are many ways to do that.

One is to forgive in your heart. That’s usually easy to do for someone you love. You know they didn’t mean to hurt you and so you don’t get angry at them. And if you truly forgive, you won’t be thinking of how that person owes you for the hurt and what you can get from them. If you don’t love the one who hurt you, you s ll need to forgive, so you can let go of the hurt. (And be forgiven for not loving your neighbor!)

Paul also tells us to let go of bi erness, anger, and shou ng. Instead of ge ng even, we are told to be kind and compassionate (Eph 4:32.) We can go to the next step a er forgiving in our hearts: We show our forgiveness in our ac ons. A friend or rela ve might get a hug; others might get a handshake or words of forgiveness. If the one who hurt you insists on making up for it, accept their gi graciously and remind them that they are forgiven; they may need to make repara on so they can forgive themselves.

Jesus showed how much God wants to forgive us by his death on the cross. Because we are forgiven, we are then able to forgive others. So while God’s love and forgiveness are always first, we must be able to forgive others so that we can accept it from God. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

READING I: 1 KINGS 19:4-8

Elijah went a day’s journey into the desert, un l he came to a broom tree and sat beneath it. He prayed for death saying: “This is enough, O LORD! Take my life, for I am no be er than my fathers.” He lay down and fell asleep under the broom tree, but then an angel touched him and ordered him to get up and eat. Elijah looked and there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water. A er he ate and drank, he lay down again, but the angel of the LORD came back a second

me, touched him, and ordered, “Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” He got up, ate, and drank; then strengthened by that food, he walked forty days and forty nights to the mountain of God, Horeb.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: 34:2-3, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9

NICENE CREED

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on He came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

READING 2: EPHESIANS 4:30-5:2

Brothers and sisters: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemp on. All bi erness, fury, anger, shou ng, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.

So be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.

GOSPEL: JOHN 6:41-51

The Jews murmured about Jesus because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven,” and they said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph? Do we not know his father and mother? Then how can he say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Stop murmuring among yourselves. No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draw him, and I will raise him on the last day. It is wri en in the prophets: They shall all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to my Father and learns from him comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.”

FRIDAY: Psalm 136: His mercy endures forever.

SATURDAY: Psalm 16: You are my inheritance, O Lord.

FEAST OF FAITH Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Song of Heaven

The words of the Sanctus are rooted in the scrip-tures. They recall the song of the seraphim in the prophet Isaiah’s vision of God in majesty: “Seraphim were sta oned above; each of them had six wings: with two they veiled their faces, with two they veiled their feet, and with two they hovered alo . ‘Holy, holy, holy is the L of hosts!’ they cried one to the other. ‘All the earth is filled with his glory!’ ” (Isaiah 6:2-3). They recall the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest” (Ma hew 21:9). Yet the liturgy adds some-thing new to these ancient texts. The seraphim sang, “the earth is filled with his glory.” But the liturgy pro-claims, “heaven and earth are full of your glory.” In the Eucharist, earth and heaven meet. For a moment in

me, we join in the song that the angels sing for all me. The Sanctus raises us to heaven, but does not

remove us from the earth. It is the song of the King who took on our human flesh so that we might share in his divine life.

News from St. Juliana Boy Scout Troop 965

Troop 965 con nues to be very ac-ve this summer, while closely fol-

lowing COVID guidelines to keep scouts and leaders safe.

On July 18 a group of scouts and leaders headed up to the Owasippe Scout Reserva on in Michigan for a week at summer camp. Owasippe offers an amazing range of ac vi es for scouts—swimming, hiking, cra s, motorboa ng, ATVs, kayaking, ca-noeing, space explora on, rifle, shotgun, archery, nature, horseback riding, and many others.

Owasippe has operated as a Scout camp for 110 years—it’s the oldest scout camp in the Unit-ed States—and has a great tradi-

on of providing memories for a life me.

On July 23 a crew of ten Scouts and leaders le for the Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico for two weeks of backpacking in the Sangre de Christo Mountains. The trip to Philmont is a High Adventure trip for Scouts who are older and who have shown the ability to thrive in the wilderness. The crew will backpack in the mountains for sixty miles over the course of ten days.

Our fall planning includes a canoe trip on the Des Plaines River, hiking on the Des Plaines River Trail, and two or three weekend camping trips before winter.

The Troop is also planning service projects to support St. Juliana.

If you would like more informa on about joining us, please call Scoutmaster John Pelrine at (773) 206-7160 or visit our Troop website at www.troop965.org. New Scouts (Boys 10 1/2 years old and up) are always welcome.

Tweet of the Week

The invita on in the #GospelOfTheDay (Jn 6:24-35) is this: rather than being concerned only with material bread, let us welcome Jesus as the bread of life and,

star ng out from our friendship with Him, learn to love each other. Freely and without calcula on.

WEEK AT A GLANCE

SAINT TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN) (1891-1942) August 9

“Come,” Edith gently whispered, taking her sister Rosa’s hand, “let us go for our people!” These were Edith Stein’s last words as the Nazis, enraged at the Dutch bishops’ con-demna on of their genocide, took into custody all Catholic converts from Judaism. Born Jewish, but non-prac cing from her teens, Edith’s search for truth led to a doctorate in philosophy, a brilliant career as professor and author and, finally, to the Autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, which she read in one si ng, then declared, “That is the Truth!” Bap zed on January 1, 1922, observed then as the feast of Jesus’ ini a on into the covenant of Abraham, confirmed on February 2, the feast of Jesus’ Presenta on in the Temple, Edith entered the cloistered Carmelites in Cologne, transferring to a convent in Holland when she realized that, because of the Nazi persecu on of the Jews, her presence could imperil the safety of the other nuns. She died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz as a daughter of Israel and of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
