The Epiphany of the Lord / La Epifanía del Señor January 08, 2017 / 08 de Enero 2017

The unfolding of the story of the Incar-nation continues today as the Church celebrates the Epiphany. The tale of the magi from the East is one of the most fascinating in all of scripture. It has

much to teach us about what we can come to expect, even in circumstances and places that may seem insignificant or small. Bethlehem was a tiny town, what we might refer to today as a town without even one stop light. Yet it is over this seemingly insignificant place that the guiding star stops in its own search for the place where the Sav-ior would be born. Too often we fail to recognize the fact that the star of Bethle-hem comes to rest in our everyday lives, where we can expe-rience God’s presence, manifested in ever new ways. Epiph-any calls us to shake off our stupor and recognize the One who comes to save us.

KINGLY GIFTS The church’s name for this day, Epiphany, means “to re-veal” or “make visible.” The child Jesus is honored not by his own people, but by wise men, strangers from afar. On-ly Matthew’s Gospel tells the story, and pious legends have added details over the centuries. The Jews hoped for a Messiah, God’s Anointed One, to deliver them from sin and from their enemies. Yet here, God’s Son is revealed to Gentiles, people like us who are seeking a Savior. We ex-pected Jesus in Advent; we celebrated his birth at Christmas. In this new year what gifts will we give him in return? Resolutions often include a decision to work off the extra weight gained from too much celebrating. All well and good, but why not do something extra for those you love and for your community? Show the love of God that is in your heart, or as Saint Francis of Assisi is thought to have said, “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.”

LIVING STEWWARDSHIP NOW

Kingly gifts . . . For God: Love God, receive the sacraments, pray, study God's word. For the Church: Serve in a parish ministry, contribute to the offertory, support the missions. For your community: Recycle, conserve natural resources, vote. For family and friends: Make time for children, keep an open door, relax together. For yourself: Eat good food, exercise, develop your abilities, and be thankful!

LA CORRESPONSABILIDAD VIVIDA AHORA Regalos reales. . .

CHRISTMAS CHILDREN’S LITURGY We are delighted to have had the parish youth choir, led by Francis Oliveira, sing for our 5pm Christmas Eve mass. This indeed is our first parish youth choir here at Mission Dolores. They have practiced every other Sunday at 11:15 am. The parish youth choir has already sung the communion song at two different Sunday’s. It truly is a blessing to have our young people participate in our liturgies. We are also happy to have had our Posada with a Mary and Joseph.
