4TH SUNDAY IN ADVENT

ST. PAUL CHURCH NEWS

ANGEL TREE ~ A HUGE SUCCESS! THANK YOU FROM SOCIAL ACTION Each year we are amazed at the generosity that go into the Ad-vent programs overseen by the Social Action Committee. This year, our Angel Tree had over 800 Angel gift requests that were thoughtfully purchased and beautifully wrapped. They went to 5 Different locations. Through the generosity of several families in our parish who joined together with Social Action members, we were able to participate in the Adopt a Family program for Friendship Center families to relieve the stress and provide joy to many struggling families this Christmas. We should all be proud, truly we have prepared for the coming of the Christ Child by our love for those less fortunate. To all those who cut angels, bought a gift for the Angel Tree or the Adopt a Family, helped bring the gifts downstairs after Mass, and to all the elves who sorted, bagged and delivered the gifts we thank you.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:21 St. Paul said, “Test everything. Retain what is good.” If you love to sing, why not test the people of the choir at the Saturday, 4 PM Vigil Mass? If you find they are welcoming, friendly, interesting, fun-loving, … you might join the choir and hold fast to what is good.

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY #147 DEC. 21, 2014 The passage of the federal health care mandate was supposed to provide afforda-ble health care to all Americans. By most accounts this is not happening, and in the process our First of Amendment Right, which is supposed to safeguard our religious freedom has been taken away. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health & Human Services Sylvia Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

QUESTION & ANSWER - PUZZLE

Why do we give gifts at Christmas? Great events in and of themselves are not tangible. They occur in life but leave no mark behind, nothing that someone could come across and know that something significant occurred. So we mark the event with monuments, holidays, gold watches or plaques, making a meaningful event tangible and memorable. Gifts at Christmas do the same thing. They mark the occasion of the birth of Jesus, communicating a bit of the joy of the day by allowing us to be

both giver and receiver. Gift-giving sets aside the day as special and different. The special foods, customs, decorations and gifts all help focus our attention on the importance and meaning of the day and at the same time allow us to share person-ally in its joy and happiness. In giving gifts, though, we can share in the meaning of Christmas in a significant way. We imitate God in sharing with others. We give a bit of ourselves to others in the gifts we give, just as God gives us the gift of his Son. No wonder we often say that the best gifts are those that come from the heart. Given in love, these presents are wrapped in the best covering of all. ©2009 Liturgical Publications Inc

What Christmas

is Really About By Fr. Larry Rice, CSP

(used with permission)

Over the centuries, the celebration of Christmas has gathered so much extraneous material that it’s difficult for most of us to remember precisely what we’re celebrating. Take away Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the red-nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus, and the elves. Put aside the Currier and Ives Christmas cards, Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”, and that little kid who wants the Red Ryder BB Gun. Let go of the gift-giving, the parties, the charities, and a White Christmas. Let’s even forget, for a moment, about our hopes for peace on Earth and good will toward all.

What’s left, and what remains the theological and spiritual core of Christmas, is the Incarna-tion. It’s the reality that God has taken on human flesh, been born as one of us, like us in all things except sin. We Christians believe that in Jesus Christ, the human and the divine are brought together, are simultaneous realities. It was part of God’s plan and purpose that he should experi-ence life as we experience it– being born as a child, living and growing as a human child, know-ing all our wonder and fear and joy.

In the coming of Jesus into the world, our human nature could be redeemed, and his divine nature could be concretely accessible to us. The world was changed by Jesus coming into it, giving birth to our hopes for salvation. Through his birth, his life, his teaching, and his death and resurrection, God Incarnate has made possible the Peace on Earth we long for, and the love and reconciliation we still believe can reign.
