Grand Master’s MessageGreetings Brothers:As I look back at the Christmas season, I find that this was the perfect time to celebrate with family and friends and to create memories that will last forever. Brothers, I hope that this season brought you joy and happiness.

It is so rewarding to witness the many charitable things that Masons do across the state. Some examples include: purchasing toys for children, making Christ-mas baskets for the elderly or needy, giving gift cards and volunteering during the holidays, all of which is greatly appreciated by countless organizations, charities and the Brothers who just need a helping hand. A simple and kind act from the heart can inspire others and uplift their spirit. I’m proud to witness, brothers showing thoughtfulness for others, kindness in the community, hon-esty in business, courtesy in society and fairness in all things.

I was privileged to attend the annual Veterans brunch in Bardstown, KY honor-ing the National Guard Unit, Charlie Battery, 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artil-lery. This unit has been deployed 3 times since 2003. Once to Fort Campbell for a year, then to Iraq for 16 months and lastly, to Djibouti for 9 months. They also served in Vietnam in 1969. It was a pleasure to meet those serving our great nation. Thank you to William Riggs and the members of Duvall Lodge #6 and Suburban Lodge #740 for all of their hard work and commitment to making this a successful event. Masonry and the history of our country are intertwined in loyalty, honor and of course, patriotism. I am proud that our Masonic Frater-nity continues to support our Veterans in many ways, such as this event.

In the months of December and January, we have installed or will be installing newly elected officers for the ensuing year. Many lodges are now under new leadership with the elections and installations. This is the time for new ideas and a fresh start for all lodges. Brothers, these newly installed officers will need your support and encouragement throughout the year. Prepare to help them when called upon extending a Fraternal hand of assistance. A time has come to implement new goals to create interest, to strengthen and make our lodges stronger. As leaders of your lodge, let it be said that you live your life as a Master Mason, true to your obligations. I want to encourage you, my fellow Masons, to revisit your Masonic obligations and to again study and reflect on their meanings.

On Saturday, January 25, 2020 the Grand Lodge of Kentucky will host our annual MASONIC EDUCATIONAL WEBINAR at noon EST. Following the webinar, there will be 6 opportunities throughout the state to participate in face to face meetings. It is the DDGM’s responsibility to have a location for these Educational meetings within their district on the dates and times listed in the DDGM handbook. The master of each lodge is responsible for attending or ap-pointing a representative to attend either the webinar or one of the face to face meetings. The schedule for these meetings is listed in the DDGM handbook, which each lodge should have received, also on the Grand Lodge website and in this Masonic Home Journal. Education is the key to our success and every mason should strive to make advancements in Masonic education. I encourage all members of the craft to further their knowledge of freemasonry.

On The CoverYork Rite College Golden Award Recipients

At Hiram #4 in Frankfort the Brothers Raymond Webb and Ron Wise were honored with a Golden Award present by the York Rite College. To our knowledge only 7677 Golden Awards have been presented in the history of the college. Counting the US and Canada that is only 100 awards given per year across both countries. This is a rare and select group of recipients.

Brother Raymond Webb and Brother Ron Wise are pillars of the craft, one with over 50 years of service to the craft. Their service over the years, includes being a mentor to their Brothers and ever faithful in the degrees, yet always being in the background as the Brothers were initiated.

Shown in the photo are (L-R): George Brooks, PGC, Past Governor; Terry Lee McFarland, DDGM District 20; recipients Raymond Webb and Ron Wise; Chuck Smith, Master; Bill Brown, Past Governor of North Central College #116; Joe Giles, Governor North Central College #116 and Grand Generalissimo of the Grand Commandery of KY.

Greetings Brethren,The New Year has begun in the Valley of Covington and it is going to be a busy, fun filled, family filled and productive time for all of us who want to participate. We start the year off with a Dinner/Magic show at the temple on Saturday, Janu-ary 18th, presented by brothers Artie Kidwell and Billy Hall. Some of you may not be aware that Brother Kidwell’s name is well known among the best magicians of the Las Vegas venue. This promises to be an exciting night for you and the kids; tickets are available (see the enclosed advertisement).

Don’t forget that we are DARK in January and will begin meeting on February 21st this year. March 7th is a one day re-union in Pikeville. We will have a two day reunion on May 15-16 in Covington. July is tentative for a trip to the House of the Temple in Washington D.C. There are also plans for presenting events at some of our state parks. We will be DARK in July, but will meet again on August 21st. It is a good time to be a member of the Valley of Covington Scottish Rite. More

to come on that and we hope it is just the beginning of ventures to masonic venues that will further our knowledge in those things that are impor-tant to Masons.

At this point, I want to turn your attention to something new to our Valley and that is member recognition. We have several members who, month after month, go about their duties within the Valley and very few of you are aware of who they are, what they do and maybe more importantly, what they have done. This presentation is about one such a person; Ron Allari was born in Turlock, California in the year of 1945, but by some stroke of fate made it to God’s country in the Valley of Covington (yes, I am biased). He is the chairman of our Membership and Registration committees and for the last several years it has been his responsibility to not only retain, but somehow, increase our membership. We all know how difficult that is. We know that Ron is a 32° KCCH. He was initiated in Silver Grove Lodge in June of 2005, Passed in July and Raised as a Master Mason in September of the same year. He has served in positions in Blue Lodge masonry too numerous to mention in this article.

Here is the Ron Allari that most of us do not know. I only discovered this after watching Brother Ron give a presentation on Veterans at our stated communication on November 22, 2019. He was attired in some form of Army dress blues. He spoke about service to country, what a veteran is and why. He talked about commitment, dedication and responsibility of the veteran. From his lecture, it was obvious that he shared the same thoughts that I did and I wanted to learn more about his role in the defense of our United States of America. So I decided to ask, and this is what I learned about my brother;

Valley of Covington

Ron served our Country beginning in 1965 in the U.S. Army Spe-cial Forces attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1967, he was commissioned an Officer in the Engineer and Aviation branches of the Army and commanded both Engineer and Aviation units during multiple tours in Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and the United States. He was certified to pilot both fixed wing (airplanes) and helicopters. Ron served our country for a period of 21 years re-tiring with the rank of Major. During his career, he earned the Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, six Air Medals for his actions during combat missions and numerous other Army Com-mendation Medals.

Ron currently serves in other civic areas to include volunteer Ser-vice Officer for the Department of Veterans Affairs, 1st Vice-Pres-ident of Chapter 88 of the Vietnam Veterans Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion, He currently holds the position of Service Officer in these entities.

In 2014, Ron was the first member of the first class of inductees in the Kentucky Vietnam Veterans Hall of Fame at ceremonies in Frankfort, Ky.

Ron Allari is a good man, a good citizen and a good mason. He is a definite credit to our fraternity. God bless him and all he has done.

In the bond of brotherhood,

Ray Murphy, 33° ElectPersonal Representative, Valley of Covington

Covington Scottish Rite “I Didn’t Know That……”

The first known Master Mason degree in England was not conferred in a Lodge of Ma-sons, but it is believed by some; in the Philo-Musicae et Architecturae Societus Apol-loni, a musical society organized on February 18, 1724 (new style-1725) by Masons. Seven of the eight original Society members belonged to the “Lodge at Queensgate in Hollis Street” the other, “The George in Long Acre”. Four were ‘Pass’d Masters’.

The Society required all members to be Masons, and if one wishing to join the musi-cal society was not a Mason, the Society made him one. Although frowned upon by the Grand Lodge, it was a common longstanding practice that Masons were entitled to make Masons as they seen fit; a practice which died slowly.

Fortunately, the minutes for the short lived Society (records end March 23, 1727), still exists. The purpose of the Society was to “fix and establish a Mutual Society of True Lovers of Music and Architecture.” The very first minutes state the reason for requiring members and visitors of the Society to be Masons.

In part: “Music and Architecture, the Happy produce of GEOMETRY, have such Affinity, they Justly may be Stil’d TWIN SISTERS and Insepa-rable; Constituting a perfect Harmony by Just Rules, Due Proportion, & Exact Symmetry, without which neither can arrive to any Degree of Perfection.”

The minutes also reveal the history of each of the eight founders and “before founding the Society ….. A lodge was held consisting of Masters sufficient for that purpose in order to pass” three Fellowcraft. One of the original founders of the Society was Francesco Geminlani, believed to be one of the greatest violinists of the era. He was made a Mason by the Grand Master on February 1, 1724, and “was regularly passed Fellow Craft and Master” by the Musical Society, on May 12, 1725. Francesco Geminlani was named “Director of all our Musicae Performances” for the Society. Why Geminlani’s ceremony was later than the other three Fellowcraft is unknown.

Other members-elect would be made a Mason before being permitted to be a member of the Society. According to the Society’s minutes, 18 of the 39 members were made masons within the society. It is probable that because of the Grand Lodge’s objections, the Society ended its meetings, however their individual membership was retained in their lodges.

It definitely shows that the Fellowcraft degree was active in London as early as 1724, and some think because of the above wording “was regu-larly passed Fellowcraft and Master”, that the Master’s degree in 1725, may have been, also. The two degree system had been used in Scotland at least since 1696 (Edinburgh Register House Manuscript) where one was made a Mason and later passed to Master or Fellowcraft , indicating the Master or Fellowcraft were interchangeable terms and one and the same degree. “Now it is to be remarked that all the signes and words as yet spoken of are only what belong to the entered apprentice, But to be a master mason or fellow craft there is more to be done which after follows”, so the manuscript reads.

Scottish historian Robert L. D. Cooper states that on January 29, 1726 the Lodge of Dunbritten held a meeting with Grand Master John Hamilton, seven Master Masons, six fellowcraft, and three entered apprentice where present. By the sheer numbers eight Master Masons present indicates a rank above Fellowcraft. Gabrielle Potterfield who was one of the six fellowcraft present, was again present on March 29, 1726 and “was admit-ted and received a Master of the fraternity” thus strongly indicating the three degree system was present in Dunbritton Lodge in Scotland, and possibly earlier.

It is true that the Edinburgh Register House manuscript shows two degrees, entered apprentice and the second and highest ranking, which con-tained the five points of fellowship as does the very similar Chetwood Crawley manuscript of 1710. England’s known ritual was the reading of the ancient charges with a short obligation, a onetime ceremony used to make a Mason. Approximately 100 Manuscripts from 15th century to after the Grand Lodge was formed, show this. This does put the three degree system likely in Scotland’s hands sometime between 1710 and 1726. We now have to ask ourselves, what did the Master’s degree consist of? Possibly a significant word that was communicated at the Installation of a Master? Or could it be the Hiram Legend known to exist in 1730? Or perhaps somewhere in-between?

Oh I might add that there exists in Scotland a one-piece square and compasses that one or both points can be hidden behind the square, covering the modern three grade usage. Why is this important? It belonged to John Lockhart 1684-1766 and is dated 1714. -----What do you think?
