IMPORTANT DATES for 2017

Contents

We ask your prayers for Lilijana Baker, Tayla Farrelly and Shaylee Reubenicht who have had a family member pass away recently. God of love the Baker, Farrelly and Reubenicht families who have known the time for planting, for laughing and for dancing. The joys of happier days can never be taken from them. Let those joys soften the pain of their suffering now. We ask this through Jesus and his mother, Mary. Amen.

“Commissioning Assembly and Welcoming MassWe are well and truly into the swing of the Term 1 and celebrate two important occasions this week. On Tuesday we gathered for our first whole school assembly, which also gave us the chance to commission our student leaders and staff for 2017. On Thursday, we join together in Eucharist as we celebrate our Welcoming Mass. Within our mass, we will especially welcome and acknowledge students who are continuing their sacramental journey in 2017. I warmly invite all families and community members to join us on Thursday at 9:15am in the Polding Centre.

I thank all those who have worked behind the scenes to make these two important occasions for our community so special. I especially thank and acknowledge both Sophie McGlaughlin (College Captain), Ella Maisey (College Vice Captain) and Christina Jonas (APRIM) for their leadership in these two significant school gatherings.

Laureate AssemblyLast Wednesday, Kate Bawden (Deputy Head of School), Sophie McGlaughlin, Ella Maisey and I attended the Sacred Heart College Laureate Assembly. It was a memorable occasions which also gave us the opportunity to join with the Sacred Heart Senior students in the stunning new Br Joseph McAteer Centre. The ceremony recognised and celebrated the outstanding academic achievements of the graduating class of 2016. As mentioned in my previous newsletter, nearly 50% of students who obtained an ATAR over 90 were Marymount old scholars! On behalf of the entire community, I especially wish to acknowledge the outstanding result of Taylor Kilpatrick who had perfect scores in all subjects and gained an ATAR of 99.9! Congratulations Taylor!

Amalgamation Update Many thanks to the parents and community members who came along last Monday 13th to Sacred Heart College to meet with Steve Byrne to hear about some of the next steps in moving towards the amalgamation of Marymount and Sacred Heart. It was great to hear such open and honest points of view on gender-based learning. The night was a great opportunity for the many school communities of the South West Region to come together and look at the positive steps being taken for the future of our young people.

Steve Byrne also meet with the Marymount staff and MLG last week. Again, it was great to witness the openness and enthusiasm around the changes for the future. The staff at Marymount are excited about the future for students at both Marymount and Sacred Heart and are committed to ensuring that student learning and wellbeing remain at the centre of our discussions and decision-making. Staff are looking forward to meeting with the Architect this week and sharing ideas about how the design of learning spaces could complement student centred and contemporary pedagogy.

Parking around the College Parking in and around the College can always be tricky… here and at every school I have been associated with! I take this opportunity to remind families of the importance of keeping student safety at the forefront of your decision making as you drop off and collect students. Along with the newsletter, this week is a reminder from the Holdfast Bay Council about parking regulations around schools – I encourage you to have a read.

Wishing you God’s blessing in the week ahead.Shana BennettHead of School

MLGFOCUS

Introducing...My name is Sophie McGlaughlin, and I have been given the privilege of being elected as the Marymount College Captain for 2017. I am very grateful to have received this role and am looking forward to the year and what it brings. I have been a student at Marymount since 2014 and along the way have been able to meet many great teachers, make lifelong friends and have learnt lots of new things. I hope this year all of the students are able to achieve their goals and I’m sure 2017 will be year to remember. I am looking forward to serving as College Captain and to give back to the school, by being able to represent at events and lead other students. Along with Ella, I hope to set a good example to other girls and be able to assist in making sure each and every student has an enjoyable and beneficial year. I am very excited for the year ahead and can’t wait to see what it brings. Sophie McGlaughlin, College Captain

Hello, I’m Ella Maisey, the Marymount College Vice Captain for 2017. I’ve always aspired to be a member of the MLG and cannot wait to experience the vast responsibilities and challenges the role will bring. I’m extremely excited to be able to lead the school by example and to be a hardworking representative for Marymount - especially after all the opportunities it has opened up for me! My captaincy goal for the Marymount community in 2017 is to make the year extraordinary, filled with many highlights and exciting memories. Being given the chance to demonstrate leadership skills and confidence, I will strive to make the College proud. In unity, Sophie and I will show leadership and respect towards the community and will do so in a gracious, yet enthusiastic manner. I look forward to working towards an enjoyable and successful 2017!Ella Maisey, Vice Captain

Formation DayLast Wednesday we had our first opportunity to get together as the MLG for 2017. We spent the morning discussing our roles as leaders and what it meant to be a good leader to us personally. Setting our own expectations for ourselves, we began planning the yearly fundraisers and events that are to occur. Discussing what we would bring to the table and our responsibilities as this years role

models. Mr Byrne then came for a session to talk to us in addition to the above discussion about the qualities a great leader possesses and what makes them so important. He gave us a greater understanding of what being a true leader is and we look forward to meeting him again in the future. We then spent the afternoon out, having a shared lunch and participating in an activity that allowed us to have some group

bonding. Working on our team building, at Marion bowland it was a fun chance to get to know everyone further and grow closer as a group. Connecting with each other and forming a greater understanding of how we all work together best as a team. This years group of girls in the MLG are fantastic and I can’t wait to work with everyone to make this year a memorable one - looking forward to what’s to come!Jess Hood, 9 Jillaroos

Year 6FOCUS

It is amazing to think that our Year 6 students are almost a third of the way through their first term here at Marymount. Although the transition process is an ongoing one, it has been wonderful to see the girls settle into new routines and develop new relationships with confidence.

There have been many exciting moments that the girls have already experienced this term; meeting their Big Sister in Year 9, engaging with their learning using their iPad as a learning tool, developing their skills during Cricket Clinics and they soon will enjoy participating in Rainbow Day where relationship building will be the theme!

We asked each of the Home Groups to reflect on an aspect of the term so please enjoy the read! Sharon BentleyYr6/7 Wellbeing Coach

First Impressions of MarymountOn my first day I was excited but as the day got closer I got more nervous. All these bad thoughts kept popping into my head like: What if I’m not with any of my friends? What if the work is really hard? But I was so excited and all these good thoughts appearing like: How many friends am I going to make? Who’s going to be my teachers? And 100 more! Now I’ve settled in and I love Marymount!!!Emily Brookes, 6 Emerald

When I first got here I felt so nervous and scared. I was sure I was going to get lost. But not only that I was really confused. Everyone knew where to go and I didn’t, so of course, I followed them and I felt a little bit better. I felt challenged but, I also felt wondrous. I started thinking about positive things like, “I’ll totally make friends” or “At least there’s a lot of other new people”. After that I felt great.Sahara Jalosjos, 6 Emerald

iPad ProgramThis is our first year using iPads as a learning tool. So far we have been using our iPads for Leadership Speeches, studying for Italian, using emails, downloading school apps and setting up our calendar for 2017. We also keep record of our timetable. We all enjoy using iPads as a learning tool and can’t wait for all the exciting, creative learning that will take place this year.Ruby Roberts and Isabeau Bottroff, 6 Violet

Big Sister Little SisterOn Tuesday in week 2, the Year 6 and 9 classes all did Big Sister Little Sister. We were all very excited to meet them for the first time this year. Some of the girls stayed in the year 6 classrooms and the rest went into the year 9 classrooms. We started off doing a little questionnaire to get to know our Big Sisters and for them to get to know us a bit better. When we finished that we got to decorate a biscuit with icing and lollies. After we ate our biscuits we played some games, took some photos and had a chat with our Big Sisters. When Big Sister Little Sister time was over, we were all feeling a bit sad that we had to leave so soon but we are looking forward to seeing them when we do Big Sister Little Sister again!Alisha Lancaster and Isabel Ellul, 6 Turquoise Class Leaders

The Arts & Technologies: MusicIn this Semester I have been lucky enough to be able to start to learn more about two great Arts & Technologies subjects, Drama and Music. Music has been quite easy so far and we’ve just been learning about a few of the many instruments that we can play. In one of the more recent lessons that we have had, we watched a short cartoon made by Walt Disney about Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom, or as we know them, Brass, Woodwind, Strings and Percussion. We learnt how the instruments have evolved from old sticks and strings to Claves (clapping sticks) and Violins. This was really interesting for me as I love learning about History. I can’t wait to learn more!Michala Baldwin, 6 Coral Class Leader

The Arts & Technologies: DramaThis semester I’m going to be learning about two great subjects called Drama and Music. In Drama we have been learning about movement as an activity. We are going to be showing the growth of an apple tree and this is the first task that we are going to be graded on. Another thing we have had to do is learn everyone’s name and a gesture to go with it. That has been by far the hardest activity yet because I was at the end of the line. In Drama we have also made up little dances as well as mirroring activities. Overall, all the lessons have been so much fun.Caitlin Chapple, 6 Coral Class Leader

Welcome back George - it’s great

to see you!!

Dr Michael Carr-GreggLast Tuesday night Kristin Anderson (Yr8/9 Wellbeing Coach) invited me to a presentation by Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. He is one of Australia’s highest profile adolescent and child psychologists in Australia. He is the resident parenting expert on channel 7’s Sunrise and is the author of 10 parenting books.

Greg began the evening by stating that Generation Y is the most vulnerable generation ever psychologically and as parents we are least prepared to deal with it as we are so busy. He proceeded to outline the Five Greatest Challenges of Parenting in 2017.

The first of these was cybersafety. For your daughters their real world is both off and online. It is how they communicate as they have never known a world without computers. He insisted that parents and teachers must be involved in this aspect of their lives as adolescents have an immature brain and are provided with a sophisticated piece of technology.

Greg recommended the following websites:

www.ourpact.comThis website allows parents to limit screen time by blocking internet and app access by giving parents control over their children’s devices.

www.getcoldturkey.comThis is designed so that it blocks all social media but allows students to access the internet. It is able to be customised to student’s needs.

www.esafety.gov.auContains a wealth of information for parents on topics such as how to report cyberbullying, digital reputation and social networking. He outlined 4 simple steps to combat cyberbullying:

1. Do not reply2. Block the person3. Save the evidence4. Report abuse

www.itstimewetalked.com.auThis website provides parents with information regarding the pervasive nature of pornography and how to support children in a society that can so easily access it like never before in history.

Further to this in 2017, Marymount has received a grant to work towards being an accredited e-smart school through the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. We are very excited about this and look forward to giving you more information in the following months.

In the next newsletter I will share the other challenges of parenting that Michael Carr-Gregg outlined.Liz StewartLeader of Student [email protected]: 8179 4432
