When we first met with Linda and Steve Cann one of the things that they said was that they wanted the buildings to retain their original exterior appearance while the interior should be more modern.

To keep the exterior appearance I refrained from cutting holes in the exterior of the building except for the entrances and for skylights in the roof to allow natural light to come in. In the Quonset hut I used glass floors in the hallways and partial height walls on the second floor to allow the light from the skylights to reach the first floor.

To make the interior spaces more modern and unexpected I used Juxtaform space articulators to create the shape of a crown inside the hut. This creates curved “walls” in all of the spaces and adds a nessecary acoustical barrier since the building is made of metal. It also allows for insulation to be placed against the walls without changing the shape of the areas.

One of the major spaces in the Quonset hut is “Queenie’s” Coffee Shop. For this area I took inspiration from the 1940’s diner by using checkerboard tiles on the floor and counters. It can also be seen in the pendant lighting over the tables, and the curved countertop. To bring in a contemporary feel I used modern furniture and counter lighting.

The other major space in the Quonset hut is the Art Gallery/Community Space. For this area I used vibrant colors and comfortable seating to create an inviting area for meetings, movies, etc. Each wall is painted with a primary or secondary color to accentuate the main color of the paintings that will be placed on them. Also the podiums have lighted bases to add emphasis to the sculptures.

The architect should strive continually to simplify; the ensemble of the rooms should then be carefully considered that comfort and utility may go hand in hand with beauty.
