Note from the Pastor!
! The Earth is Still Our
Mother!
A few weeks back Earth Day came
and went. Did you notice? It didn’t
get a lot of press this year because we seem to be so
preoccupied with other things (it’s still the economy,
sweetheart). But the earth isn’t going away. Or is she?
Of course she is! So is the sun, the moon, the stars
and all created things. But the question for us is are
we speeding up the process? And if we truly want to,
can we slow the process down? That’s the question. Do
we have the collective will and are we willing to pay
the price for sustainability? I don’t know.
The vast majority of good science seems to be on
the side of the fact that there is indeed global climate
change. There are pockets of people throughout the
world that are doing all they can to help slow down
the process of ecological degradation. But for most of
us, it is still the economy. If we can frack our way to
abundant natural gas and drill our way to new oil
deposits, well, why not? Recently The Atlantic
magazine ran a cover article stating that we will not
run out of oil. The subtitle said it was good for
America, bad for Saudi Arabia, and really dangerous
for Mother Earth. Why would we go through all the
trouble and expense of going green when black gold
is so much easier and cheaper to obtain? So lay the
pipeline and drill, baby, drill.
Really? Is there another side beside just the
economic or the ecological? Yes, indeed there is, it’s
the theological (sure, play the God card). How does
all of this look from God’s perspective? One of my
favorite quotes comes from the artist Georgia O’Keefe
who upon viewing the earth from her first airplane ride
proclaimed, “This changes everything.” It’s all a matter
of perspective. One of our astronauts after having
seen the bounty, interrelatedness, and fragility of
Mother Earth from outer space came back and
proclaimed that he wanted to shake some kind of sense
into petty politicians. From his viewpoint in outer space
he saw and believed.
The question for us is do we believe? The world is
becoming very small and truly is a global village. And
as we bump up against other cultures and religions it is
beginning to dawn on us that our God who is love,
loves not only Catholics from Connecticut but Hindus
and Muslims, Jews and Buddhists as well. We are all
discovering that we have one thing in absolute common.
What is grounding us all together is that we all stand
on the same ground. We all breathe the same air.
And Mother Earth feeds us all. Knowing that we share
this commonality we now have the power to read
reality with a foundational truth that goes beyond
culture, religion, ideology. First and foremost, we are
all members of one global community. This great
reality is forced upon us now in a way we never saw
before. If we decide to keep on living the life of
artificial separation, of one from the other and over
individuation, my rights against the common good, in a
hundred years or so it will be all over.
Another thing we can see from distinct spiritual eyes
is what St. Francis of Assisi clearly saw. He truly is the
father of the modern environmental movement. Long
before quantum physics he saw all of creation
connected together. Everything was sacred, God was
in all matter, and it was all to be respected. The earth
was not simply subjective matter to be plundered but a
sacred living organism to be lived with. Francis gave
wonderful dignity to nature by making it subjective and
giving it names. It was Brother Sun and Sister Moon.
His own body he called Brother Ass. Once you grant
subject to the natural world, everything changes. It is
now not just an object to be used and then discarded,
but something or even someone that we are in
relationship with for our mutual benefit. Now you just
don’t chop down a tree because you need the
firewood. You ask it for permission and promise to
plant a sapling in its place. You take nothing out of the
ground that you do not replace. It is the living,
breathing, sacred universe in which we live. That’s the
theological side. God’s side.
So Earth Day has come and gone. Too bad,
because Earth Day is every day. Have you hugged a
tree today (when Mohammed was a young man, he
literally did that).
In Jesus, the Perfect Union of Heaven and Earth,
.

FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI
JUNE 2, 2013 All are invited to join the three Catholic parishes in Elmhurst to celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi (The Body and Blood of Christ). On Sunday, June 2, 2013 beginning at 1:00 p.m. on the Mall of Elmhurst College we will gather to begin our procession with the Blessed Sacrament through Wilder Park and ending at IC church for final prayers. For this event we are asking our children who received their First Holy Communion this year to follow the cross, candles, and servers as they lead a Solemn Procession (Parade) of the Eucharist. So, don’t put away your First Communion suits or dress yet! Just show up and all will be explained to you.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS
A special thank you to all who made our First
Communion celebrations so wonderful the past
two weekends. Thanks to our Grade 2 catechists,
our music ministers, liturgy planners, parents, and
most especially, our children. We are all very
proud of you and hope to see you at the Lord’s
table often.
RE Registrations June1 will be here in a few weeks. If you want to
secure your first choice of time session, get your
registration forms in to the office today. Classes
are filling up quickly and enrollment is limited.
Catechists Needed We have had some folks respond to our request
for help and we thank you. However, we are still
in need of catechists at various grade levels at
various session times. If you are a loving,
welcoming, accepting, forgiving person, you have
the most important qualifications for being a
catechist. You don’t have to be a theologian, just
someone who can help our children understand
how the Gospel can be applied to their lives.
Come share your Faith with the young people of
Mary, Queen. Call for more information.
For more information on any of the above, please
contact the REO, (630) 832-8962 or email at [email protected].
