Mary Cassatt lived from May 22, 1844 - June 14, 1926
She grew up in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania
When she was an adult she lived most of her life in France and then she started Impressionist paintings
Early Life
Even though her parents didn’t want her to become a professional artist, she started studying painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. But later on she decided to study on her own, so she moved to Paris the next December where she studied with Jean-Leon Gerome (a good art teacher)
Early Life Continued
Mary returned to the United States in 1870
Her paintings had many admirers, but not too many buyers. She was considering giving up art, but she decided to go to Europe again to see if she could get more business there.
Returning to Europe
A few months after Mary returned to Europe she started getting more business, but after awhile Mary ran into more bad luck.
Impressionism
Later on Mary was invited by her old friend Edgar Degas to show her works to the impressionists.She grew very popular among the impressionists and was very successful in that area.
Later LIfe
The 1890s were Mary’s busiest and most creative time. She became a role model for young American artists who wanted her advice.
