There are many dif-ferent brand names to choose from, and the argument could go on forever as to which name is the best. While I may have some proof as to which brands I have seen endure the best in our Canadian winters, today I would rather focus on which snow blowers is best for your snow removal problem. We get asked all the time about which one is the best for the cheapest. We ask

you how much area do you need to cover? There are gen-erally three kinds of snow blower: Single Stage, Two Stage, and Three Stage.

The correct machine depends on how big the area and the real prob-lem is: how much snow will there be? Single stage blowers are very light and easy to man-age but are only good for removing light fluffy snow. They are great when you are home and can clear the sidewalk or driveway as soon as it begins snowing and usually only cost $500 to $1000. Think of these

units as more of a pow-ered broom. Next, Two stage or dual stage blow-ers can be equipped with either wheels or tracks for self-propelled move-ment. They can remove heavy amounts of snow and throw it a good dis-tance into your neigh-bor’s yard. Large drifts are no problem for these machines. The main issue is that they are quite heavy and hard to navigate. With wheeled units, you must continu-ally control the cutting height of the machine as the skid plates on the bottom may catch on the ground and stop forward movement. They are easy to steer but still require effort to keep the tires moving on icy roads as

well. Track units are more expensive and add the luxury of having an adjustable height con-trol so you do not have to manage this your-self. They would easily move over any terrain, but unless your machine has steering controls to manoeuvre the unit left or right, track units are very difficult to turn. Also, Dual stage cannot go through snow that has been pushed up by a trac-tor or grader. The two stage units are the most common and range from $700 to $5600 depending if you would like bells and whistles from elec-tric start up to steer-ing controls and heated hand warmers. Last, the Three Stage is quite

similar to dual stage in form but has an addition-al impeller on the front to grind through hard snow banks and plowed ridges. The extra horse-power needed makes these machines even heavier and can be a problem to move around, but makes short of any amount of snow winter may through at you. If you live on an acreage, a three stage machine is the largest you can get before needing a tractor with a three point hitch attached snow blower. Make sure you buy the right machine, not just brand or sale price. Don’t buy a broom to clear the driveway of a three foot snow drift, and don’t

buy a huge machine to clean the sidewalk. I will touring throughout the Parkland this winter with different kinds of Snow blowers this win-ter, maybe if you buy me a coffee and ask nice I’ll clear your driveway for you!

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL

Caroline scrambled for a reply when Liam interrogated her about how she was able to get pregnant so quickly. Maya became concerned that Nicole was having second thoughts about the surrogacy after she witnessed an inti-mate moment between Nicole and Zende. When Caroline divulged that Liam knew about the vasectomy, Ridge con-fronted Brooke. Liam became more observant about the interactions taking place during a Forrester Creations’ staff meeting, especially after announcing that he was writing an article about Ridge and Caroline’s baby. Nicole, Maya and Rick hoped for the best as they prepared them-selves for a very impor-tant doctor’s appoint-ment. Wait to See: A secret comes closer to being revealed.

DAYS OF OUR LIVESHope struggled to

cope with the aftermath of everything that hap-pened to her. Once he was exonerated, Chad went looking for Abigail. Meanwhile, Ben angrily

confronted Abigail about her affair with Chad. Kate hit it off with Eduardo. Abigail relayed a coded message to Chad. Hope learned the truth about Bo’s disappearance for the past several years. John received some unexpected news from the ISA. Kayla insisted that she and Steve would face the latest threat to their family head-on as a team. Jennifer reached out as Hope continued to unravel. A huge rift occurred between Ciara and Chase. Nicole had a run-in with the charm-ing Fynn, an old buddy of Daniel’s. Wait to See: Steve suspects that Joey is being targeted by an old enemy.

GENERAL HOSPITALCarly brought Jake to

visit Sonny. Dante tried to repair his marriage to Lulu. Alexis and Julian discussed the impact of his former business operation. Dillon encour-

aged Maxie to pursue her acting ambitions. Sam turned to Alexis for some motherly advice. Valerie turned out to be the new police academy cadet with whom Dante was partnered. Patrick called Robin to tell her about a recent turn of events. Sam and Jake shared a heated moment. Elizabeth, Laura, Hayden and Nikolas discussed the secret that they all shared. Paul told a reluc-tant Anna to hold off on pursuing Sonny’s shooter. Emma and Spencer went to the park for a school project. Wait to See: Spinelli reconnects with an old friend.

THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS

Sharon told Dr. Anderson that Patty was trying to reach Dylan. Later, when Sharon refused to take her medicine, Dr. Anderson told her that she was putting her baby at risk and forced her to take it. Victor declined Luca’s offer for his fam-ily to financially bail out Newman Enterprises. Nikki worried about the state of Nick and Sage’s marriage. Lily was dev-astated that she had lost Cane forever and regret-ted not trusting him. Gwen told Neil that she was frustrated by his pre-

occupation with Hilary, but Neil assured her that he cared only for her. Marisa spied Luca talk-ing to Victor and ques-tioned him about it. A drunken Gwen almost told Devon everything she knew about Hilary. Wait to See: Sharon gets closer to discovering the truth.

S a s k a t o o n , Saskatchewan – Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. (PotashCorp) is again sup-porting Saskatchewan’s food banks with its $1 Million Matching Gift Campaign during the holiday season.

“The generosity of Saskatchewan people is the foundation of this campaign,” said Leanne Bellegarde, PotashCorp’s Director - Diversity & Inclusion, as the cam-paign kicked off Tuesday in Saskatoon. “Each year we are heartened by the sense of caring shown for some of Saskatchewan’s most vulnerable cit-izens.”

More than $12.5 mil-lion has been raised since 2010 through the cam-paign. Of that amount, more than $7.5 million has been contributed by people from every corner of the province, with the other $5 million coming from PotashCorp.

“Food banks across Saskatchewan are strug-

gling to keep up with demand – in fact, three-quarters of them saw an increase in usage this year,” said Laurie O’Connor, Executive Director of the Saskatoon Food Bank & Learning Centre, citing numbers from the 2015 National Hunger Count Survey released Tuesday.

“Greater demand at food banks makes PotashCorp’s match-ing gift campaign more critical than ever before,” O’Connor added. “In fact, it is absolutely vital for seniors, work-ing families, post-sec-ondary students and children, who represent nearly half of the 18,000 people we serve here in Saskatoon each month.”

Funds raised dur-ing the challenge help Saskatchewan’s 29 food banks restock shelves, buy supplies and sup-port vulnerable citizens. PotashCorp is committed to addressing the issue of local food security, to ensure that those in need

have access to adequate amounts of nutritious food.

“PotashCorp’s sup-port again this holiday season ensures that food security remains within reach for families and individuals across the province,” said Steve Compton, Executive Director of Food Banks of Saskatchewan. “It

allows food banks – both urban and rural – to meet the needs in each of their communities. Every community food bank has a unique story. This support makes it possible for food banks to support vulnerable families and individuals while sharing the stories of the 26,727 people we are proud to serve.”

Whooping cough cases in Yorkton areaThe city of Yorkton is

currently experiencing an increase in the num-ber of pertussis cases. So far, people from 1 to 45 years have been affect-ed. However, most cases have been seen in ado-lescents.

Pertussis is a serious bacterial infection of the respiratory (breathing) system. Anyone can get pertussis, but the dis-ease is most severe in children less than one year when it can be fatal. This disease is also con-sidered severe in preg-nant women in the last trimester of pregnancy as it can be passed to the newborn with the poten-tial to cause severe com-plications and death.

The germ is spread

very easily by infected people when they cough, sneeze or have close contact with others. Pertussis can eas-ily spread from person to person, especially among people of the same household, school or daycare.

Early symptoms of pertussis are sneezing, runny nose, a fever and a cough. Over time, the cough gets worse, lead-ing to severe coughing spells with a whooping sound before the next breath and often ends in vomiting. The cough can last up to 2 months and can make it very hard to breathe. Complications include pneumonia, seizures and encephal-opathy (brain disorder).

Death can occur in chil-dren, especially those below one year of age.

Young infants may not have these exact symp-toms, and a parent or caregiver may not real-ize how sick their baby really is. Adolescents and adults may experi-ence milder symptoms. Once a person has had pertussis, they do not develop life-long protec-tion and may get the dis-ease again.

Most people in Yorkton have experi-

enced mild symptoms. However, the concern is that they may pass the infection to young infants who may have serious complications from it, including death.

Pertussis can be prevented by a vaccine given at 2, 4, 6, and 18 months of age. This is repeated once between 4 and 6 years and again in grade 8. As a way of pro-tecting infants, especial-ly those below the age of 6 months, the vaccine is recommended to care-

givers of babies up to 6 months of age (including daycare workers) and to pregnant women who are 26 weeks pregnant or more.

Medical Health Officer, Dr. Mandiangu Nsungu urges people in Sunrise Health Region to take the following actions:

- If you experience a cough that lasts 2 weeks or more or any other symptoms suggestive of pertussis, see your phys-

ician or nurse practition-er.

- Ensure that your children’s vaccinations are up to date.

- Caregivers of young infants, including fath-ers, mothers and daycare workers, should receive the pertussis vaccine.

Please note that the adult pertussis vaccine is combined with tetanus and diphtheria vaccines in what is called Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, acellular pertussis) vac-cine.

Winter weightsprogram postponed

Due to an unseason-ably warm fall, winter weight allowances will not come into effect until December 1 or until the roadbeds are sufficiently frozen.

Postponing the win-ter weight program will protect Saskatchewan highways from unneces-sary damage. Road struc-tures will be monitored throughout the province on an ongoing basis to determine when winter weights can be imple-mented.

Colder temperatures freeze and strengthen road structures allowing the ministry to permit additional weight on the highway network. Without sufficient freez-ing, the extra weights can damage pavement and the road structures beneath.

Commercial vehicle operators can find the

latest road restric-tion orders and related information online at www.highways.gov.sk.ca/restrictions/ or by call-ing the Highway Hotline in Regina and area at 306-787-7623; Saskatoon and area at 306-933-8333; across Canada at 1-888-335-7623; and on the SaskTel Cellular Network at *ROAD.

In addition, technical and regulatory informa-tion is available from the Transport Compliance Branch Inquiry Line at 1-866-933-5290. Truck drivers outside of Saskatchewan can call the same line at 306-933-5290. The line operates weekdays, except statu-ary holidays, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested a record $5.2 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008.

TALK OFTHE TOWN

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been having weird spells for about six months. They occur only occasionally and last a couple of days and nights. They awaken me out of sleep and are a little frightening.

It starts with a burn-ing sensation on the right side of my nose. I feel as if I have to remember something, and a wave of warmth floods over my upper torso, down to my arms. I feel my heart flut-tering, and am a little sick to my stomach. I also have funny sensations in my right ear. It lasts a few seconds, and I just have to ride it out. When it’s over, I feel weak for a while.

I saw a neurologist, who mentioned that it might be anxiety, which made me mad -- being awakened out of a sound sleep doesn’t seem to me that I am anxious, as I have no trouble sleeping! He wanted to put me on

a medication with a lot of side effects, such as dizziness and hallucina-tions. I do not want to be on medication, but I also don’t want to have a grand mal seizure. He could not tell me if I could have one or not. I only want affirmation that I am not crazy! -- L.G.

ANSWER: You aren’t crazy. Your neurologist may be right -- this can be related to anxiety -- but I wouldn’t jump to that diagnosis without consid-ering a few things first.

A warm sensation over different parts of your body should make your doctor think of con-ditions like carcinoid syndrome and pheo-chromocytoma. These are tumors that secrete hormone-like substances that can cause odd feel-ings, such as flushing or warmth, in different parts of the body. They can be screened for with simple urine and blood tests. I agree with you that being awakened with this sen-sation makes anxiety or panic attack less likely. It does not sound like a seizure disorder to me.

Sometimes, people notice sensations that defy medical explana-tion. In that case, we gen-erally just try to make sure it isn’t something

that doesn’t threaten life or health and help people minimize and live with the symptoms.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have to take levothyrox-ine in order to obtain an acceptable TSH number. I have read that some doctors are stating that there is a relationship between hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance, possibly even celiac dis-ease. Is this proven to

the point that a patient should alter his or her diet and give up the basic foods of bread and cere-al? -- R.K.

ANSWER: People with celiac disease have a much higher risk of auto-immune thyroid disease (especially Hashimoto’s, the most common cause of low thyroid) than expected, to the point where everyone with celiac disease should

have a blood test to look at thyroid levels. Celiac disease, or intolerance of gluten in general, may have few or subtle symp-toms, and it might be worthwhile to consider testing for celiac disease in people with autoim-mune thyroid disease. However, I would not rec-ommend a drastic change in diet for people with thyroid disease if there are no symptoms.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column when-ever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pam-phlets, visit www.rbma-mall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive Orlando, FL 32803.

* It was 20th-century American journalist Walter Lippmann who made the following sage observation: “Our con-science is not the ves-sel of eternal verities. It grows with our social life, and a new social condi-tion means a radical change in conscience.”

* According to a recent analysis of data from the online music streaming service Spotify and art-ist popularity data from a website called The Echo Nest, Americans tend to stop listening to new music at the age of 33.

* John Tyler, born March 29, 1790, was the 10th president of the United States. He was married twice and had a total of 15 children. These children, collec-tively, were witness to a surprisingly large swath of American history. The oldest, Mary Tyler Jones, was born in 1815, the year that saw the end of the War of 1812; the young-est, Pearl Tyler Ellis, survived until 1947, two years after the end of World War II. President Tyler even has two grand-sons who are still alive

today. * You might be sur-

prised to learn that it costs the U.S. govern-ment nearly 2 cents to mint a single penny.

* Unless you’ve been to Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, it’s dif-ficult to believe just how blue the water of that lake appears. In fact, there was a time when the rich blues made the professionals at Kodak believe the photos to be overdeveloped, and the pictures would be returned at no charge.

* Those who study

such things say that if you were (for reasons unspec-ified) to eat the liver of a polar bear, you’d die. The amount of vitamin A stored in that organ constitutes a fatal dose for humans.

Thought for the Day: “You never know what you’ll want to write until it starts writing itself in your head.” -- Jill Ker Conway

A warm, comforting aroma of the season will waft throughout your home when you bake this delicious and moist pumpkin bread that my neighbor passed on to me years ago. It never dis-appoints. It must be the smooth canned pumpkin that provides the consis-tent results.

Get your kids involved in the planning and shop-ping. Before you head for the grocery store, let them investigate and see if the spices and baking powder hiding in the back of your cupboard are out of date. Fresh is always best.

When it’s time to bake, gather the ingre-dients and basic tools you’ll need, and set out them out on the counter. Preheat the oven, put on aprons and get started. Measure, sniff, stir and talk together as you make and bake this spicy bread.

Serve slices warm

with mugs of cider, and relax together as you experience a new fall memory and one of the simple joys of family and home.

PERFECT PUMPKIN BREAD

1/2 cup vegetable oil1 1/2 cups sugar2 eggs, lightly beaten1 cup canned pumpkin1 3/4 cups flour1/2 teaspoon each:

ground cinnamon, cloves, allspice, nutmeg

1 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon baking

soda1/4 teaspoon baking

powder1/4 cup water1/4 cup raisins or

coarsely chopped nuts, such as pecans or wal-nuts (optional)

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Grease and flour one 1-1/2-pound loaf pan. (Place parchment paper or waxed paper on the bottom of the pan for easy removal.)

2. In a large bowl, mix together oil, sugar, eggs and pumpkin until well-blended.

3. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, spic-es, salt, baking soda and baking powder.

4. Stir dry ingredients into pumpkin mixture alternately with water. Fold in raisins or nuts, if you wish.

Pour into pan. Bake about 1 hour, or until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from pan. Cool thoroughly before slic-ing. Makes one loaf.

TIP: While all the ingredients are out, make an extra loaf or two to give to others.

Q: I’m glad to see that “Agent X” is finally on TNT. I’ve been looking forward to seeing Sharon Stone in this. She is won-derful, of course, but I’m also impressed with the actress who plays Olga. What can you tell me about her? -- Jonathon T., via email

A: Olga Fonda, whom you might remember from “The Vampire Diaries” and “Real Steel,” is the gorgeous actress who plays Olga Petrovka. She was born in Russia and came to the U.S. when she was 14 as a foreign exchange stu-dent. She was thrilled to come to America, which is, in her words: “a land of opportunities and

dreams. So, when I got the opportunity to go to the United States, I hap-pily grabbed it. I always wanted to get an experi-ence of living in differ-ent countries, studying in different countries, learning the different cultures, and, of course, having better opportuni-ties.”

Aside from working on the show, Olga is thrilled to work with Sharon Stone and Jeff Hephner.

“There is a great mix of action, mystery and drama -- and a sense of humor. It’s a well-done show. Sharon is beautiful and smart and a talented woman. And she is fun to be around. She is very supportive of her fellow actors. There was one scene she did where she had to work with kids. It was such a great expe-rience to observe that she was so kind and so patient. It was a really beautiful moment. She’s a superstar. And Jeff is a talented, nice, good-look-ing guy with a great, great sense of humor. We have so much fun together.”

Q: Can you tell me what the actress who plays Maeby on “Arrested Development” has been doing lately? -- Linda R. in Virginia

A: Alia Shawkat stars in a new TBS dark-com-edy series of her own, which is currently in development. It’s called

“Search Party,” and it co-stars John Early, John Reynolds and Meredith Hagner. The show fol-lows a group of four self-absorbed 20-somethings who come together when a former college acquain-tance mysteriously dis-appears. The series will debut sometime in 2016.

Q: My wife heard that there is going to be a new “Star Trek” series. Is that true? -- Paul T., via email

A: A new “Star Trek”

series has indeed been greenlighted at CBS, with an expected debut in January 2017. Prolific writer and producer Alex Kurtzman (pro-ducer of the “Star Trek” feature-film reboots) is developing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The new ‘Star Trek’ will introduce new charac-ters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civi-lizations, while exploring the dramatic contempo-

rary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its incep-tion in 1966.” The latest in the “Star Trek” fea-ture films won’t premiere until 2019, but die-hard Trekkies will have plenty to tide them over until then.

Merv Malish of Canora, Saskatchewan has announced he will be seeking nomination to be the Progressive Conservative candi-date in the Canora-Pelly Constituency for the provincial election to be held April 4, 2016.

Mr. Malish was born and raised near Mikado and graduated from Canora Composite High School. Merv worked on the family farm, and later owned and operated his own business in Mikado for 5 years. Mr. Malish spent time in British Columbia and has spent recent years working as an addictions and anger management counsel-lor. Merv returned to Saskatchewan and now resides in Canora.

When asked why he is seeking the nomination, Mr. Malish said “As a professional counsellor, I have always been rec-ognized for putting my clients’ needs first.” He continued, “Becoming an MLA would give me the opportunity to bring the same commitment to a larger purpose, in meeting the needs of my constituency.”

Merv brings a wealth of experience to the nomination. In addition

to being a journeyman welder, and has served as an employee assist-ance counsellor. He was elected and re-elect-ed as an Alderman for the District of Elkford, British Columbia. He has served on public works and finance committees both locally and region-ally. He was appointed to the Elk Valley/Crows

Nest Pass Industrial Adjustment Services Committee.

In conclusion, Mr. Malish stated “If our province is to con-tinue to grow, we need a party with vision. The Saskatchewan P r o g r e s s i v e Conservatives have always been a party with vision for the future.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“American Ultra” (R)

-- Mike (Jesse Eisenberg) is a scrawny pothead grocery-store clerk who is unbelievably deadly when he thinks his life is in danger. See, Mike doesn’t remember it, but he’s the product of a secret program that trained ultra-deadly, ultra-brainwashed sleep-er agents and placed them unsuspecting parts of the U.S. An ambitious functionary in the CIA (Topher Grace) decides to clean up what’s left of the program by send-ing assassins against the unsuspecting Mike and his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart).

Eisenberg is the last guy you’d cast as an action star, and that’s why he does so well -- he goes from shirking schlub to killer commando in an instant, and he’s just as surprised as you. Stewart also plays an important role in the movie’s lik-ability, since she and Eisenberg share a facile chemistry and engaging rhythm.

“A Christmas Horror Story” (NR) -- Despite the title, it’s really a hand-ful of Christmas horror stories, strung together by a framing story with

a drunk William Shatner. One bit has teens pok-ing around a creepy school basement on the anniversary of a dou-ble-homicide -- it goes how you’d expect. Then there’s the family who enters the woods to (ille-gally) chop down their own Christmas tree, only to find that something ... strange has happened to their son. Another naughty family gets a visit from the Krampus, a nightmarish anti-Santa from Germanic folklore. Then there’s the all-out Christmas carnage story where Santa throws down against a horde of profane zombie-elves.

So there’s a variety of tinsel-tinged terror, and if any of these carols aren’t singing with you, it won’t be long before Shatner cuts in and the next bit begins. It’s not the most

memorable holiday-horror flick, but it’s a polished product with an assortment of terrifying treats.

“Ricki and the Flash” (PG-13) -- Meryl Streep stars as a woman who left her family to chase rock ‘n’ roll dreams, and now has to come back down to earth to recon-cile with her chil-dren and the life she could have had. Ricki (Streep) never touched stardom, but she’s in a rock-in’ bar-band with a strapping guitarist

(Rick Springfield). She returns to the Midwest when her ex-husband (Kevin Kline) summons her to support their adult daughter (Mamie Gummer, Streep’s real-life daughter) in recov-ering from a disastrous divorce. The family melo-drama is mixed in with stirring musical perfor-mances where Streep belts classic rock covers with serious energy.

“No Escape” (R) -- Jack Dwyer (Owen Wilson) moves his wife (Lake Bell) and two pre-teen daughters from Texas to an unnamed Southeast Asian country so he can get to work with water resources. Too bad the locals aren’t too keen on Western intervention, and a violent uprising floods the streets just as the Dwyers are moving

in. All we know about the mob is that they are bloodthirsty foreign-ers out to kill all white Westerners, which puts a discomforting damper on the action -- of which there is plenty. The first part of the film pounds through a gripping chase and a series of shocking

set-pieces, then Pierce Brosnan enters the fray as a Westerner with the grit to help the family get out alive. It’s still weird watching the film know-ing that Third World peo-ples are used as a stand-in for howling zombies.

* On Nov. 28, 1582, William Shakespeare, 18, and Anne Hathaway, 26, pay a 40-pound bond for their marriage license in Stratford-upon-Avon. Six months later, Anne gives birth to their daughter, Susanna, and two years

later, to twins.* On Nov. 27, 1703,

an unusual freak storm finally dissipates over England after wreak-ing havoc for two weeks. Packing hurricane-strength winds, the storm killed between 10,000 and 30,000 people, and sank hundreds of Royal Navy ships.

* On Nov. 29, 1929, American explorer

Richard Byrd and three companions make the first flight over the South Pole. In 1996, a diary of Byrd’s was found that seemed to suggest his plane had turned back 150 miles short of its goal because of an oil leak.

* On Nov. 23, 1936, the first issue of Life maga-zine is published, featur-ing a cover photo of the Fort Peck Dam. When it

folded during the Great Depression, publisher Henry Luce bought the name and re-launched Life as a picture-based periodical.

* On Nov. 26, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a bill officially estab-lishing the fourth Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day. In 1789, President George

Washington had pro-claimed a holiday of national thanksgiving for the U.S. Constitution.

* On Nov. 24, 1971, a hijacker calling himself D.B. Cooper -- wearing only wraparound sun-glasses, a thin suit and a raincoat -- parachutes from an airplane into a thunderstorm with 100-mph winds and tem-peratures well below

zero over Washington state. Despite a mas-sive search, no trace of Cooper or the $200,000 in ransom money he carried was ever found.

On Nov. 25, 1990, after a howling wind- and rain-storm on Thanksgiving Day, Washington state’s historic floating Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge breaks apart and sinks to the bottom of Lake Washington. The bridge had been made of 22 floating pontoons.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We’re going to adopt a dog now that I’m 10 years old. I saw a pit bull puppy that I liked at the shelter, but my mom said no, because they’re vicious. My friend said that’s not true. What can I do to persuade her to adopt this dog? -- Braedon in Alpharetta,

Ga.DEAR BRAEDON:

Before I answer, I do want to tell you that your mom has your best inter-ests and safety in mind. And because of the many publicized incidents about pit bull attacks and aggressive behavior, her first reaction is to keep you from getting hurt.

Ultimately, she will be the one to approve the type of dog to adopt. But you can try to sway her opinion with a few myth-busting facts, cour-tesy of the American Pit Bull Association (americanpitbullfounda-

tion.com/pit-bull-myths-debunked):

* Pit bulls’ tempera-ment is often better than that of other breeds. In temperament testing (atts.org/breed-statis-tics/statistics-page1), American pit bull terri-ers had a passing rate of 86.8 percent, and other pit bull breeds scored above 82 percent -- well above the general dog population’s average of

77 percent.* Pit bulls originally

were bred as working dogs and are typically energetic, intelligent and stubborn. Like other working breeds, they do best when socialized early with other dogs and humans, and with lots of training and attention.

* Pit bulls’ jaws are not stronger than other dogs, nor do they “lock” when they bite.

You and your mom should look for certain traits in every dog you’re considering. Each dog’s temperament is unique; ask the shelter about cur-rent and past behavior. Meet a potential dog with as many family members as possible. And research each breed before decid-ing which dog to adopt.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This year, instead of jumping into the whole holiday prep scene, move in a little at a time. You’ll appre-ciate the sense of con-trol you’re more likely to enjoy.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The separation between the Bovine’s head and heart is never as far apart as it seems. Both senses work best when they come out of logic and honesty.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) The best way to keep those pre-holiday

pressures under control is to just say no to taking on new tasks while you’re still trying to work with a heap of others.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) News means a change might be on its way, but what does it hold? Don’t just ask ques-tions; make sure you get answers you can trust.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Old friends and new have one thing in com-mon: Both your longtime and newly minted pals have much wisdom to impart.

VIRGO (August 23 to

September 22) With time running out, this is a good time for you to show ‘em all what those Virgo super-organizational skills can do.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Librans and holidays are made for each other, especially if children and animals are going to be part of your joyous season.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Time is getting too short to allow a spat to taint the holiday season. Restart your rela-tionship and reschedule holiday fun times.

S A G I T T A R I U S (November 22 to December 21) Seeking advice is laudable. You might learn far more than you thought you could. Stay with it.

C A P R I C O R N (December 22 to January 19) Continuing to assess changes works toward your getting your new project up and ready. Trusted colleagues remain ready to help.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) That new situation needs a lot of attention, but it’s worth it. This is a very good time for you to involve the arts in what you do.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It might be a good idea to slow your hectic holiday pace so that you don’t rush past what -- or who -- you’re hoping to rush toward.

BORN THIS WEEK: Others pick up on your confidence in yourself, which inspires them to believe in you and your special gifts.

The Year

OurHOLLYWOOD -- Mario

Lopez, who starred in “Saved by the Bell” and “Dancing With the Stars,” will play Vince Fontaine in FOX TV’s “Grease Live” on Jan. 31. Mario, 42, will play the radio personality at the high-school dance created by then-44-year-old Edd “Kookie” Byrnes. Rumors are fly-ing that Fox has signed the original “Sandy,” Olivia Newton-John, to play the Eve Arden role of the school principal. Also, Nick Jonas is just about set as the “The Teen Angel,” played by Frankie Avalon, while Martin Short will prob-ably be Coach Calhoun, originally created by comedy legend Sid Caesar. Fox better hire the best make-up art-ists because none of its cast, playing high-school students, is less than 22 years old.

“Sandy” will be played by 27-year-old Julianne Hough, the film star and “Dancing With the Stars” judge. Her love interest, “Danny Zuko,” will be Aaron Tveit, who was William “Tripp” Vander Bilt III in “Gossip Girl,” Mike Warren in “Graceland” and Enjolras in the film “Les Miserables.” He’s 32. Vanessa Hudgens, taking over for Stockard Channing as “Rizzo,”

was a teenager when she made all those “High School Musical” TV films for Disney, but now she’s 26. Carlos PenaVega, recently on “Dancing With the Stars,” also is 26, while Keke Palmer, Pink Lady “Marty Maraschino,” is 22. Pop star Carly Rae Jepsen, 29, is “Frenchy,” the “Beauty School Dropout.”

It’s a very talented cast, but they’re a bit long in the tooth as high-schoolers. Fox couldn’t find one talented teen anywhere?

Don’t invite Adam Lambert and Demi Lovato to the same place! Apparently, Demi dumped Adam as open-ing act from her 40 city U.S./Canadian tour, start-ing June 24, in favor of Nick Jonas, who, coinci-dentally, has the same manager that she has. Or is it because Demi was opening act for the 2009 Jonas Brothers tour and this is payback? Just ask-ing!

Talk about still too soon? “Look Who’s

Back,” a Borat-style com-edy about Adolf Hitler walking the streets of modern-day Berlin, based on the best-selling novel by Timur Vermes, topped the German film box-office, beating “The Martian” and animated hits “Inside Out” and “Hotel Transylvania 2.” Oy vey!

Johnny Depp needs better advisers. In 2013, “The Lone Ranger,” which he also produced, cost $225 million and grossed $260 million. In 2014, “Transcendence” cost $100 million and grossed $103 million. In 2015, “Mortdecai,” which he also produced, cost $60 million and grossed only $30 million. His lat-est, “Black Mass,” cost $53 million and grossed $76 million (barely at break-even). However, the five “Pirates of the Caribbean” films grossed $3.7 billion, col-lectively, while “Alice in Wonderland” grossed $1.03 billion, all by her-self. Maybe Depp should produce a film called “Alice Meets the Pirates of the Caribbean”!

The question was met with a wince of pain that quickly metamorphosed into a look of utter disbe-lief and disdain.

“Now why on Earth would we ever want to do that?” was the reply.

It wasn’t the first time my ol’ pardner, the late, great Bill Grigsby, the Kansas City announcer best known for being the longtime voice of the Chiefs and one of the first announcers of the Super Bowl, shot me down. At the time we collaborated on a community newspa-per in Kansas City, and I had the swell idea to

start a “Royals Review” column to augment our sports section.

“Kid,” he said to me, “I paid my dues cover-ing bad baseball when I called the Kansas City A’s for Charlie O’Finley, and I wouldn’t even take the time to piss on that [man’s] grave.”

“Why not, Bill?” I asked.

This time he shot me a look of annoyance.

“Because the line is always too damn long!”

Good ol’ Grigs ... I set ‘em up and he’d knock ‘em down. Fine, I said, I’d cover the lousy games myself.

But then the Royals hired Ned Yost. He had flamed out as a catcher in the big leagues, but I knew him as the bull-pen coach for the dynas-

tic Braves of the ‘90s. He was mistreated badly in Milwaukee, and now he had a second chance.

Yost was almost uni-versally panned from the start for the way he han-dled the pitching staff. He stayed the course. He made players change positions. Alex Gordon, who looked like a pret-ty good third baseman, would learn to play left field from scratch. Again, he was panned. And then, whether it was his idea or not, the Royals shook George Brett awake from his front-office desk and made him the team’s interim batting coach.

Ask the Royals core players -- Moustakas, Gordon, Hosmer, Cain -- what it meant to have a living legend and a guy who knew nothing but

how to compete to win all the time on the bench, on road trips, on flights, presumably in bars, with them during his short reign.

Then they called these anti-moneyball Royals and their coach stupid for their style of play. Duh? Didn’t they know they were not supposed to be aggressive at the plate anymore? That they shouldn’t be swinging all the time? That fans want-ed on-base percentages and walks? That stealing bases often hurt teams more than they helped? Swinging at the first pitch? No bonafide home-run hitters? Sacrilege!

Challenging hitters with relievers who were always rested and avail-able because Yost was too stubborn to deviate from his plan to use one pitcher for his one desig-nated inning and telling him to throw 1,000-mph fastballs straight down the pipe to challenge the other team’s hitters to put the ball in play due to his superior defensive team? Hummm ... on sec-ond thought, that sort of made sense, didn’t it?

Well Grigs, ol’ pard-ner, we may never got to see these games together but in the long run, it turned out more than just a little bit OK for those that stuck by this fran-chise, that is, the Royal We. Congratulations, Kansas City.

It usually takes less than 30 seconds for an experienced thief to steal a vehicle. Having an antitheft system installed is always a good idea.

Spraying your car windows with a mix-ture of one part white vinegar to three parts water will keep them

from frosting up. Use this simple trick to give your scraper a break.

Car care experts recommend waxing your vehicle before the first snowfall. With this protective barrier, your car’s body will be as shiny as new when spring rolls around.

Sunshine State Simmered Steaks

Here in Iowa, sunny days are becoming quite a scarce commodity. But, I promise, if you put this delicious main dish on the menu, it will make a gloomy day seem much brighter! You may doubt me when you start stir-ring orange marmalade into the sauce, but trust me, it all works out per-fectly in the end.

3 tablespoons all-pur-pose flour

4 (4-ounce) lean min-ute or cube steaks

1 cup unsweetened orange juice

1 cup (two 2.5-ounce jars) sliced mushrooms, drained

2 tablespoons reduced-sodium ketchup

2 tablespoons orange marmalade spreadable fruit

1 tablespoon dried onion flakes

1 teaspoon dried pars-ley flakes

1. Place flour in a shal-low dish and coat steaks on both sides in flour. Reserve any leftover flour. Evenly arrange coated steaks in a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cook-ing spray and brown for about 3 minutes on each side.

2. In a medium bowl, combine orange juice, mushrooms, ketchup, spreadable fruit, onion flakes, parsley flakes and any remaining flour. Spoon sauce mixture evenly over steaks.

3. Lower heat, cover and simmer for 15 min-utes or until steaks are tender. When serving, evenly spoon sauce mix-ture over top of steaks. Serves 4. Freezes well.

* Each serving equals: 218 calories, 6g fat, 23g protein, 18g carb., 359mg sodium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 3 Meat, 1 Fruit, 1/2 Vegetable.

CLASSIC BREAD STUFFING

1/2 cup butter or mar-garine (1 stick)

5 celery stalks, finely chopped

1 medium onion, fine-ly chopped

2 loaves (16 ounces each) sliced firm white bread; cut into 3/4-inch cubes

1 can (14 1/2 ounces) chicken broth

1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

1 teaspoon dried

thyme3/4 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground

black pepper1/2 teaspoon dried

sage

1. In 5-quart Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add celery and onion, and cook, stir-ring occasionally, about 15 minutes, until tender.

2. Remove Dutch oven from heat. Add bread cubes, broth, parsley, thyme, salt, pepper and

sage; toss to combine well. Use to stuff 12- to 16-pound turkey, or serve in baking dish alongside poultry or ham: Spoon stuffing into greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish; cover with foil and bake in preheated 325 F oven about 45 minutes until heated through. Makes about 10 cups stuffing.

* Each 1/2 cup: About 170 calories, 4g protein, 24g carbohydrate, 6g total fat (3g saturated), 1g fiber, 13mg cholesterol, 475mg sodium.

Tip: StuffingRemember that the

stuffing is only being heated through while inside the bird and does not actually cook. Therefore, it is import-ant that the ingredients are thoroughly cooked before being combined.

To save time, cut up the raw stuffing ingredi-ents the night before, then cover and refriger-ate. Stuff the bird just before roasting -- never in advance -- and roast immediately. Lightly stuff the body and neck cavities. Do not pack; the stuffing needs room to

expand during cooking. (Bake the extra stuffing in a covered, buttered baking dish 30 minutes or until heated through.)

After cooking, the stuffing temperature should have reached 160 F to be safe. If the poult-ry has reached the cor-

rect temperature but the stuffing hasn’t, transfer the stuffing to a buttered baking dish and continue baking until 160 F is reached. Leftover stuff-ing should be promptly removed from the bird to avoid potential bacterial growth.

* “To remove paint or stain from hands (even oil-based), use an old dry washcloth with liquid hand soap -- no water. After the paint is loose, rinse with warm water.” -- H.P. in Washington

* “I found a terrific metal magnet strip that is for use in the kitch-en. It was a great price at a local resale shop. I have used it in my mini workshop to hold jew-elry-making tools by my craft desk. It is especial-ly handy now that I am making many ornaments for gifts.” -- E.L. in New Jersey

* Use baking soda as a dry cleaning agent for fabric items such as suit-cases, backpacks, boots, canvas items, etc.

* “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cin-namon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois

* Fresh ginger can be

frozen. Simply grate as needed. Flavor remains, and it will stay fresh much longer.

* “An oldie but a good-ie, and certainly consid-erate of dear old Mom: In my family, you come to Thanksgiving dinner with your own plastic contain-ers for leftovers. If you don’t bring your own,

you don’t go home with tomorrow’s lunch. Mom instituted this rule after the first Thanksgiving when all the kids had moved out. We practi-cally cleaned her out of Tupperware!” -- E.Y. in New Mexico

(NC) — With sum-mer around the corner, many Canadians take the opportunity to plan and book a vacation. Part of planning your vacation is properly securing your home and having some-one keep an eye on it while you are away.

Everyone wants to keep their home safe when they go away for vacation, but many peo-ple are unknowingly put-

ting their home in dan-ger.

How is your home put in danger?

You put your home in danger by posting your vacation plans on social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google +. Unfortunately, many thieves use social media to identify poten-tial targets.

“Refrain from updat-

ing your social media status about your holi-day plans. Also, be sure to turn off location ser-vices on your phone,” states Wayne Ross, insur-ance expert with Aviva Canada. “These simple actions will reduce your risk of being targeted for a burglary.”

If you are a regular social media user, you see it all the time. Your friends and family get so

excited about their pend-ing holiday that they post all the details of the trip online. They often post when they are leaving and coming back, who they are going with and where they are staying.

Never post your holiday plans on social media sites. And this also applies to your children if they use the sites too. Thieves thrive on this information. Many scan the internet specifically for the purpose of find-ing people who will be on vacation. The more information you post, the more you are assisting a thief.

You may also think that it’s OK as your Facebook profile is pri-vate. Be aware that when anyone you are con-nected with comments on your post, their con-

nections can view the information too. And not everyone is as diligent on who they allow to view their information.

So, if you are going to post about your vaca-

tion, do it when you come back. Everyone loves see-ing vacation pictures!

More detailed infor-mation is available from your insurance broker or at avivacanada.com.

Save the “social” for your vacation, not Facebook

(NC) — The carpet in your home is often an expression of your per-sonal style and a source of warmth and comfort. But would you really feel that comfort if you knew what lies beneath the soft and inviting cushion of fibres?

Dust is in every home and every carpet. Just 10 square feet of carpet can be home to 10,000 dust mites and 100,000 dust mite corpses. Their pres-ence and fecal matter can cause allergies and trigger asthma.

Eachperson sheds an average of 36 million skin cells in a single day. A family of four will shed three pounds of skin cells in 12 months.

Imagine — your car-pet may be more contam-inated than a toilet seat, with as many as 200,000 bacteria per square inch. Viruses have also been shown to survive up to a month or more on carpets, including Norovirus, which causes stomach flu.

Both are extremely sticky and adhere them-selves to carpet, furni-ture, draperies, bedding — almost any soft surface of your home. Animal dander can last up to six months, even after a pet has been removed from a home. Both pollen and animal dander have been identified as significant contributors to allergies

and asthma.Organic deposits such

as food and beverages, soilings from pets and other “spills” can create an ideal breeding ground for mould and mildew, which can pose a serious health risk. Headaches and breathing issues are commonplace, but living with mould and mildew can also precipitate a myriad of more severe complications.

It’s inevitable. Dirt can be tracked into a home through many sources. More than a pound of dirt can accumulate in a car-pet, in any given room, in just one year .

Sweeping it under the rug won’t help. To allevi-ate these issues, experts like Hoover recommend vacuuming carpets at least twice weekly, as well as deep cleaning every three to six months. And why not make it far less of a chore with a vacuum that is maneu-verable, light weight and fun to operate? At the top of the list this year is the Hoover Air Cordless.

For deep cleaning, look for a carpet wash-er that has a two tank system, like the Hoover Power Scrub Deluxe. It keeps the clean water separate from dirty water for optimal clean-ing results that will help your carpet look its best for years to come.

Six creepy things that are living in your carpet

Five ways to eco-drive(NC) — Attention all

drivers. The way you drive affects your fuel consumption, which in turn affects the amount of greenhouse gas emis-sions your vehicle emits into the atmosphere.

By changing your driv-ing habits, even a little, you could save hundreds of dollars a year in fuel and help reduce your CO2 emissions. The way to start is to eco-drive, a safer and greener way that produces the lowest fuel consumption from every vehicle, regardless of its size and age.

Here are five tips to get you started from the experts at Natural Resources Canada:

1. Accelerate gently - Every time you put your foot on the gas pedal, you feed fuel to your engine - the harder you apply the

gas, the more fuel your engine uses and the more greenhouse gas emis-sions your car produces;

2. Maintain a steady speed and stick to the speed limit - It’s tempt-ing to speed on the high-way but by reducing your speed from 120 km/hour to 100 km/hour you can lower your fuel consump-tion by about 20 per cent;

3. Anticipate traffic flow - Try to gauge the flow of traffic, keep a buf-fer zone between you and the vehicles in front of you, and drive at a con-sistent speed. Speed fluc-tuations use more fuel;

4. Coast to decelerate - Coasting to a stop is like getting a free ride. When you notice that traffic ahead is slowing or stopped, remove your foot from the accelerator as soon as possible and coast instead of staying on the gas until the last second and slamming on the brakes. Your car uses little or no fuel when coasting.

5. EcoDriving can result in as much as a 25 per cent reduction in fuel costs or roughly $500 a year and $2,500 over five years for the average vehicle. Not only does eco-driving save fuel, but it also reduces mainte-nance costs.

By following these few simple eco-driving tips, you can save fuel, reduce maintenance costs and reduce your environmen-tal footprint.

Sinking into DebtSally graduated with

a practical nursing diploma and currently works at a local city hos-pital. Over the course of the two-year educa-tion program, Sally accumulated $30,000 in student loans. She cur-rently rents an apart-ment for $1,200 month-ly; her utility bills con-sist of the usual: power, cell phone, and cable. Now that Sally has com-pleted her studies, she decided to purchase a new car for $35,000. At Christmas time, she and a friend felt the need to escape the cold win-ter to a warmer climate. They booked a trip to Hawaii for two weeks. Sally didn’t have any savings for her vaca-tion. She charged all the expenses: hotel, airfare and meals, to her credit card. All the quaint clothing stores had offers too good to resist. Sally splurged another $1,000 on cloth-ing. Her credit card now totaled $10,000. Sally convinced herself she deserved this vacation because she worked hard on her studies. She declared this holiday as her graduation present. Can you see the trend?

This fictitious inci-

dent can easily happen. Although you may think I am picking on “Sally,” the female gender, men are as guilty of getting carried away with their spending. So imagine if Sally meets Harry who has spending habits like hers. They decide to buy a new home and furniture, continue to take annual vaca-tions, and replace their vehicles every second year. The debt keeps escalating until sud-denly their finances seem out of control.

Pace YourselfKeeping a watchful

eye on debt is not only a smart strategy but also a responsible one. Debt payments should only account for 20% of monthly income even though lenders permit up to 40%. I can’t blame you for wanting every-thing. Life is meant to be enjoyed. Owning a beautiful home, trav-elling to far-off places to escape the winter blues, and planning your dream wedding may only be a few of your goals. You can’t run a 10km marathon in 10 minutes, why would you expect to have and do everything in 10 years when you have a life-time? P-A-C-E

yourself to avoid throw-ing yourself in a pool of debt and drowning as a result.

Beware of SharksChoosing your debt

carefully is like watch-ing for sharks when you are fishing. You can eas-ily get swallowed-up in debt payments. Beware of obvious signs.

A relentless retail market constantly bom-bards the public with attractive advertising. Seeing ads to finance a new fridge and stove @ 0.00% for the first 18 months is very com-mon. Protect yourself by carefully reading the advertising materi-als, all disclaimers, and sales agreements.

When contemplat-ing a home purchase, I suggest “playing house”. This sounds a bit unusual but in real-

ity considers all the purchases which come with the title of being an official home owner. Additional appliances or furniture may be required. Quite often additional expenses like property insur-ance, taxes, the extra utility bills like energy, water and sewer are forgotten in all the hype. Then don’t forget the lawn mower and gardening tools!

While considering a new vehicle purchase, think of the payment term in months, not years. We convince our-selves that five years is not a long time simply because counting to five can be done on one hand. Remember five years (5) is the same as sixty monthly payments (60) or one hundred and thirty (130) bi-weekly

payments. Other life events can happen in five years which may also require money to finance. Falling in love with a new vehicle is romantic until the pay-ments begin. Vehicle insurance, license registration, fuel, and oil changes also need to be considered.

The smartest strat-egy is to eliminate one debt before taking on a new one. For example, before considering a new vehicle purchase, focus on paying off the student loan. Whatever you have been driving until now obviously works. If your vehicle is in dire need of repair, at the very least, look for a good used vehicle. The concern is that accumu-lating payments bring accumulating stress. Avoid this road as much as possible.

How to Avoid Drowning in Debt

Financial planners can’t stop anyone from borrowing money for the things they want. However, we can make you aware of the dan-gers. Your income is like a blanket which is intended to cover all your needs: lifestyle, savings, and debt obli-gations. Someone (or

something) could be leftout in the cold if yourincome isn’t able to dothis. Do your homeworkfirst before you decideto take on debt.

The word “old-fash-ioned” applies to manythings: clothes, names, and lifestyle. Althoughthings do become out-dated, many thingsdone the old-fashionedway can still work today. Our ability to save forthe things we want isone of those things.Rather than save, manynow resort to the useof “credit.” The secretto avoid the debt trapis to start doing thingsthe “old-fashioned”way. Although havinga mortgage against ahome is acceptable forthe purpose of owning ahome, continually usinghome equity for vehiclepurchases or creditcard consolidation isnot. Choose your debtcarefully. Doing thingsthe old-fashioned waymay not be such a badidea.

The CreditCounselling Societyprovides a list to alertpeople to the typicalwarning signs of debtthat might be out of con-trol. A list can be foundat their website.

Choose your debt wisely to avoid drowning

One of the first ques-tions vegetarians are asked when acknowledg-ing their dietary prefer-ences is, “Are you get-ting enough protein?” Many people assume it’s impossible to consume sufficient protein on a diet that consists largely of fruits and vegetables. But many vegetarians get the protein their bodies need.

Many people are over-ly concerned with protein intake, eating more than they really need to meet health requirements. The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein in the United States is .36 grams of protein for every pound a person weighs.

Many people need less protein than they think, which is likely one reason many nonvegetarians eat roughly one-third more protein than vegetarians. The Vegetarian Resource Group says there are no distinct health advantag-es to consuming a diet high in protein.

How protein worksThe body digests pro-

tein into amino acids to fuel its activity and aid in tissue repair. There are 20 different amino acids in food, but the human body can only make 11 of them. Your body can-not synthesize essen-tial amino acids, which must come from your diet. The nine essential

amino acids, which can-not be produced by the body, must be obtained strictly from food. Foods that contain all of the amino acids necessary are called “complete pro-tein sources.” Many ani-mal products are great sources of complete pro-tein, but complete pro-tein also can be found in plant-based foods. One food that is a complete protein source is the soy-bean.

Other plant-based foods may not be com-plete proteins by them-selves, but when eaten together, can comple-ment one another to provide all the neces-sary amino acids. For

example, combining beans and legumes with certain grains, seeds and nuts is a way to get the protein one needs. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine says that intentionally combining foods at strict ratios is not necessary. As long as your diet contains a variety of foods, many protein needs are easily met.

Less protein healthier? Many fad diets point to

high protein sources for weight loss and improved athletic performance. But reports published in journals like Nutrition and Cancer and the American Journal of Epidemiology indicate

high intake of protein, particularly animal pro-tein, may be linked to osteoporosis, cancer and impaired kidney func-tion. Eating a healthy, moderate amount of pro-tein, such as that in vege-tarian or vegan diets, can be beneficial.

Many vegetarians need not worry about their protein intake. As long as diets include plenty of grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, and veg-etables, vegetarians can meet their bodies’ pro-tein needs.

Chemotherapy is often part of cancer patients’ treatment plans. The use of medicine or drugs to treat cancer, chemother-apy can work throughout the body to kill cancer cells that have spread to parts of the body far away from the original tumor.

Chemotherapy drugs are often used in com-bination to kill cancer cells. While it’s possible that doctors will use only a single chemo drug to treat cancer, using mul-tiple drugs can reduce the risk that the cancer will become resistant to a specific drug. In addi-tion, chemotherapy is often used along with sur-gery or radiation therapy, as the American Cancer Society notes that chemo-therapy can be used to shrink a tumor prior to surgery or radiation ther-apy or used after such treatments to kill any cancer cells that might remain.

Because they can be so potent, chemotherapy drugs can produce side

effects, the severity of which varies from per-son to person. Doctors can help cancer patients prepare for potential side effects, which can disappear quickly after treatment or last longer as healthy cells take time to recover.

Some side effects of chemotherapy treat-ments, such as long-term damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys or repro-ductive organs, can last a lifetime, and men and women will need to work with their physicians to manage these side effects even after treatments have ended.

Long-term side effects do not affect everyone who undergoes chemo-therapy treatments, but the following are some of the more common side effects that men and women undergoing chemotherapy may expe-rience during and after their treatments.

FatigueSome people experi-

encing chemotherapy-

related fatigue will be only mildly tired, while others may feel exhaust-ed. The ACS notes that such fatigue tends to be worst at the end of a treatment cycle but typically goes away once treatment ends. Rest, including rest during the day, can help com-bat fatigue from chemo-therapy. It’s also good to eat a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of liquids and limit your activities if fatigue is extreme.

Hair lossCertain chemothera-

py drugs will contribute to hair loss, which can

range from mild thinning of the hair to more com-plete hair loss. Hair lost during chemotherapy treatment typically grows back once treatments are over, but the hair that grows back may be a dif-ferent color or texture. Hair loss typically occurs after a handful of treat-ments, and hair may fall out slowly or in clumps.

Nausea and vomitingThe frequency and

severity of chemotherapy patients’ bouts of nausea and vomiting depends on the drugs they are tak-ing to treat their can-cer. Nausea and vomit-

ing may begin during treatment and last a few hours, but severe nausea and vomiting can last sev-eral days. Patients expe-riencing difficulty keep-ing liquids down should notify their physicians, as should those experienc-ing nausea or vomiting for more than a day.

The ACS notes that antiemetics are drugs that can help relieve chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting, and patients may need to try various antiemetics before finding one that’s effective for them.

Chemotherapy is an effective tool in the fight

against cancer, and menand women about tobegin treatments shouldexpect some side effectsas those treatments prog-ress.

Service stations in areas where temper-atures vary widely offer consumers differ-ent types of gasolines, depending on the season. Winter-blend gasoline is specifically designed to improve your car’s per-formance when the mer-cury drops dramatically.

EvaporationTo create seasonal

gasoline blends, manu-facturers calculate the Reid vapour pres-sure (RVP). This index reflects the evaporation rate of the gasoline and should be around 9 lb/in2 in summer and 12 lb/in2 in winter. A higher RVP index indicates a greater amount of evaporation of volatile compounds that are harmful to the environment. The lower the RVP index, the high-er the production cost of the gasoline.

The advantagesIn addition to meet-

ing the ideal RVP index in cold weather, winter gasoline blends con-tain additives that are designed to optimize sev-eral functions.

• They make starting the engine easier.

• They eliminate deposits that accumulate in the fuel system and intake valves.

• They prevent fuel lines from freezing.

• They help ensure optimal engine perform-ance.

• They lower the risk of having fuel tank prob-lems.

In North America, there are more than 20 gasoline blends to meet various govern-ment standards. Most are designed to control emissions that contrib-ute to air pollution and improve air quality.

I know that harvest time is here when the colors in the produce section are dominated by dark vibrant greens, warm yellows and rich orange pumpkin colors. Pumpkins are the ambas-sadors of fall, ushering in the holiday season with its cooler days and longer nights.

The pumpkin plant originated in Central America and was intro-duced to the Pilgrims by Native American Indians. Pumpkins provide a hefty source of vitamin A, as well as being one of the tastiest forms of good-for-you fiber. The gorgeous orange color indicates significant amounts of beta carotene, also found in carrots, beets and sweet potatoes. Pumpkin seeds are rich in pro-tein, minerals and fiber. They also possess a rich buttery taste that lends itself well to pestos, salad toppings or as a healthy snack.

I like using pumpkin to update traditional recipes like this modern version of Shepherd’s Pie. You can make this crowd-pleaser in a bak-ing dish or ramekins ahead of time and reheat

it. Time in the refrig-erator allows the spices to infuse the dish and the flavors to deepen. Harvest Shepherd’s Pie is a wonderful way to cel-ebrate fall!

HARVEST SHEPHERD’S PIE

1 1/2 pounds peeled cubed baking pumpkin, butternut or kabocha squash

1 pound peeled, cubed Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes

For the meat filling:2 tablespoons vegeta-

ble oil1 cup chopped onion2 carrots, peeled and

diced small2 cloves garlic, minced1 1/2 pounds ground

lamb or ground beef1 teaspoon kosher salt1/2 teaspoon freshly

ground black pepper1 tablespoon ground

poultry seasoning2 tablespoons all-pur-

pose flour2 teaspoons tomato

paste

1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg or cloves

1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 cup chicken broth1 teaspoon

Worcestershire sauce1 cup frozen peas1/4 cup half-and-half2 ounces unsalted but-

ter3/4 teaspoon kosher

salt1/4 teaspoon freshly

ground black pepper1 egg yolk1/2 cup shredded

Parmesan or Cheddar Cheese, optional

1. Heat oven to 400 F with a rack in the top third of oven. Put pump-kin and potatoes on a greased rimmed baking sheet. Roast pumpkin and potatoes, covered with aluminum foil, until tender when pierced with a fork, 20-25 min-utes.

2. While pumpkin and potatoes are cooking, pre-pare filling. Place the oil into a 12-inch saute pan and set over medium-

high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the onion and carrots, and saute just until they begin to take on color, about 3-4 minutes. Add garlic and stir to combine. Add the ground lamb or ground beef, salt, pepper and poultry seasoning, and cook until browned, approximately 3-5 min-utes.

3. Sprinkle the meat with flour and toss to coat, continuing to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, nutmeg or cloves, cayenne pep-per, chicken broth and Worcestershire, and stir to combine. Bring to boil, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer slowly 10-12 minutes, stirring once or twice until the sauce is slightly thickened. Add frozen peas to meat mix-ture and spread evenly into an 11 by 7-inch glass

baking dish, or divide evenly into ramekins.

4. Place the cooked pumpkin and the pota-toes into a large bowl, and mash together until well-combined. Put half-and-half and butter into a microwave-safe contain-er, and heat in microwave until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Add the warm half-and-half mixture, salt and pepper, and continue to mash until smooth. Stir in egg yolk until well-combined.

5. Top the baking dish or the ramekins contain-ing the meat and veg-etable mixture with the mashed pumpkin and potatoes. Start around the edges of the dish to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bub-bling up, and smooth with a rubber spatula. Sprinkle with shredded cheese, if desired.

6. Place the baking dish or ramekins on a parchment or foil-lined half sheet pan on the middle oven rack and bake for 25 minutes, or just until the topping begins to brown and bubble around the edges. Remove to a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes before serving.
