During 1977-1980, research showed that Bangladesh has a reserve 160,000 million ton of fish. Later, it declined to 157000 million ton as per joint research conducted by the Bangladesh Government and FAO. In our country, marine fish resources are extracted in three tiers:(1) Up to 40 meter in depth from the coastline where normal fishing boat operate;(2)from 40 to 200 meter in depth where mid-water trawler operate;(3)from 200m in depth to end of the EEZ where long liner trawler run. Introduction: Fishes are major food stuff of the world in contrast of Bangladesh fishes are considered as one of the main national food item. Recently Bangladesh has achieved approximately 118,813 square kilometer of BOB. That is a huge source of marine fish for people. Marine fish contains sufficient nutrient to remove malnutrition from the country. There is a fact of preservation and adulteration of marine fishes .At present marine fish are also exported to abroad. In 1975, FAO Consultant Dr. W. B.

• Materials and Methods

Study Area and Selection: In January, 2018 we started the survey and it is the third month. This study

was conducted over a period of four week of March within different fish market of Dhaka city. Sample

was collected from two fish markets of Dhaka city Shwarighat fish market and Jatrabari fish maket. We

also have gone to some super shops such as Meena Bazar, Shwapno, Agora, Nandan super shop in

Dhanmondi, 27and Shantinogor, Dhaka. Fish marketing system is fully a chain system from producers to

retailers goes through a number of intermediaries such as trader, broker, aratdar, wholesalers, mahajon.

All the marine fish species we found in the markets are from southern part of our country. The main

regions are Cox’s bazar, Chittagong, Teknaf, Barishal, Chadpur, Satkhira, Vola, Patharghata,

Potuakhali,Hatia,Monpura etc. There are also some fishes imported from foreign country including

India,Norway,Japan etc. Prize of Different fish species vary with their size, demand of the customers and

supply of the fishes.(Chairman of management committee, Abul Kasem Babul Sarkar, Sonar Bangla

Motso Market, Kawranbazar).Environment of markets also effect on the Prize of the fishes as we see

same species with same size is different in prize in different market.

Data collection: Data was collected once in the month March from the selected zones. We chose two

giant fish market Shwarighat and Jatrabari and some of the super shops in Dhaka city it Dhanmondi and

Shantinogor. Randomly all the information such as size, prize, preservation, adulteration was collected

about the marine fishes present there. Approximately 20 species are found in the fish markets. We went

to DOF (Department of Fisheries) and found a huge collection of Marine Fish approximately 170 species.

In 12th March we collected data from Shwarighat and 15th March from Jatrabari Fish Market. We

primarily collected data from these two markets and from some super shops secondly we got help from

DOF (Department of Fisheries). A book “Encyclopedia of Marine Fish” Suggested by an officer of DOF

helped us very much in finding English and scientific name of the fishes. We also get information from

    internet.

Data Processing and Analysis: We all the five group members choose our parts to do. We sorted all the

data in Microsoft word. Also create some Graphical information from the data we collected.

  • Ilish (Tanualosa Ilisha)

National fish of Bangladesh Tenualosa ilisha which is also known as Hilsa fish is a species of fish

related to the herring, in the Clupeidaefamily. It is a very popular and sought-after food fish in all over

    South Asia.

The fish is marine; freshwater; brackish; pelagic-neritic; anadromous; depth range ? - 200 m. Within

a tropical range; 34°N - 5°N, 42°E - 97°E in marine and freshwater. It can grow up to 60 cm in length

with weights of up to 3 kg. It is found in rivers and estuaries in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan,

Myanmar (also known as Burma) and the Persian Gulf area where it can be found in the Tigris and

Euphrates rivers in and around Iran and southern Iraq

The fish is anadromous, with a life cycle that follows the general pattern of breeding upstream in

fresh water and the larvae hatching from the free-floating eggs. The immature young stages grow in

river channels and then descend to the sea for a period of feeding and growth before returning to the

rivers as mature breeding adults to complete the cycle. The hilsa is a highly fecund fish. A large-

sized female may produce up to 2 million eggs. Although hilsas spawn more or less throughout the

year, they have a minor spawning season during February-March and a major season in September-

October. Immature hilsa fish (6-10 cm), known as jatka, are extensively caught during their seaward

migration in some of the major rivers of the country.

Hilsa is primarily a plankton feeder and its food includes blue-green algae, diatoms, desmids,

copepods, cladocera, rotifers, etc. The feeding habit may vary according to the season and age of

    the fish.

In Bangladesh, The fish contributes about 12% of the total fish production and about 1.15%

of GDP in Bangladesh. On 6 August 2017 Directorate of Patent, Design and Trademark (DPDT)

under the Ministry of Industries, Bangladesh has declared the recognition of Ilish as the product of

Bangladesh. 65% of total produced Ilish in the world is produced in Bangladesh which applied for

Geographical Indication (GI) in 2004. About 450,000 people are directly involved in the catching of

the fish as a large part of their livelihood; around four to five million people are indirectly involved

    with the trade.

  • Until about 1972 the hilsa fishery was restricted to the upstream rivers, mainly in the rivers Padma,

Meghna, Karatoya, Rupsa, Shibsa and Payra. At present, the fishery has severely declined in the

upstream areas and is mainly concentrated in the downstream rivers, estuaries, coastal areas and

    the sea.

Since the construction of the FARAKKA BARRAGE in India to divert water from the Ganges, the fish are

being caught in the coastal and estuarine waters before they can migrate upstream for spawning.

Local fishermen catch migrating adults from May to October, and the juveniles from February to

May. During the dry winter months from October to February hilsa are also caught by the coastal

fishermen. The adult hilsa are caught using fixed or drifting gillnets (chandi jal) and lesser quantities

    http://en.banglapedia.org/index.php?title=Farakka_Barrage

  • are caught in berjal and lift nets (shangla jal). In the river these fishing units usually consist of non-

mechanized single or two-boat teams, whilst at sea the fishing is done with mechanized 10-13m

boats or trawlers. A system of collector boats, wholesale markets and transporter-traders supplies

the inland markets with this prized fish.

During 1980s hilsa production was fairly stable. In recent years, however, the production has shown

a downward trend, particularly in the inland fishery. In 1999 the production was significantly low and

in 2000 the fishery continued to decline steeply.

Jatka the local name for the young or juvenile stage of hilsa. Migrating adult females release eggs

upstream in major rivers, including the Padma, Jamuna and Meghna. After hatching from free-

floating eggs, the larvae remain in their nursery grounds for some time where they feed and grow. In

about six to ten weeks they grow to about 12-20 cm and become known as jatka. At this stage they

start descending to the sea for further growth and maturity. A survey conducted by the Bangladesh

Fisheries Research Institute in 1992-94 estimated that every year in the fishing season from January

to April, about 3,500-4,000 m tons of jatka are caught by using different types of gears such as jagat

berjal, current jal and behundi jal. More than 50% of the total jatka are caught in the Meghna.

Although fishing regulations do not permit catching jatka, since it is very damaging to the hilsa

fishery, the practice continues unabated. [SM Humayun Kabir]. At present it has become the main

thread for the depletion of Hilsa fish.

To reduce the depletion of hilsha fish ,in recent yers , Bangladesh government has

recognised that something needs to be done. The government has already declared

four areas as sanctuaries for the fish. In return for not fishing in these areas affected

fishing communities or households are rewarded with sacks of rice or provided with

microcredit to start up small businesses to replace the lost income. This is an example

of how economic incentives can be used to conserve fish resources.

And we become successful , Hilsa production in the country slumped to 1.99 lakh tonnes in 2002-03 season, creating a nationwide crisis of the fish.

This prompted the government to initiate a project to conserve jatka (hilsa less than 10 inches

long) in 2004. Initially, raising awareness and dissuading fishermen from catching brood hilsa

was the target. But to bolster its efforts, the government slapped a ban on fishing jatka and mother

hilsas in five breeding zones for eight months between November and June from 2007-08

    season.

  • Four of these zones are 100km-stretch of the Meghna from Shatnol in Chandpur to Char

Alexander in Laximpur, 90km-stretch of the Shahbazpur tributary of the Meghna from

Madanpur/Char Ilisha to Char Piyal in Bhola, 100km-stretch of the Tetutlia from Bhola's

Bheduria to Patuakhali's Char Rustam, and 20km-stretch of the lower Padma in Naria-

Bhedorganj of Shariatpur. Apart from the eight-month-long ban on catching hilsa and jatka, all

kinds of fishing are prohibited in these zones between March and April.

The other nursery ground is 40km-stretch of the Andharmanik in Patuakhali's Kalapara. All sorts

of fishing are banned here between November and January. Moreover, gill net, which is used to

    catch jatka, was banned.

    These steps proved really effective.

The production of hilsa shot up to 2.9 lakh tonnes in the very first season after the ban was put in

place, from 1.99 lakh tonnes five seasons ago, DoF statistics show. The figure got only higher

and higher in the following years to stand at 3.85 lakh tonnes, more than 11 percent of the

country's annual fish production, in 2013-14 fiscal year.

However, the current conservation project will end in June. What will happen then?"We will

extend the project's tenure after that," Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammed Sayedul

    Haque told The Daily Star.

Following Bangladesh's example, the government of India also took the same

initiative a couple of years back to increase the production of hilsa, a popular fish

among the people of West Bengal, Odisha, Tripura, Assam and some other states

    of the country.

  • Rupchada (Brama brama)

This article is about pomfret fish. For other uses, see Pomfret (disambiguation). They are found in the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans, and the largest species, the Atlantic pomfret, Brama brama, grows up to 1 m (3.3 ft) long. Fish meat is white in color.

Several species are important food sources for humans, especially Brama brama in the South Asia. The earlier form of the pomfret's name was pamflet, a word which probably ultimately comes from Portuguese pampo, referring to various fish such as the blue butterfish(Stromateus fiatola).

Pampus argenteus, often called either the silver pomfret or white pomfret, is a species of butterfish that lives in coastal waters off the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. The species now also occurs in the Mediterranean, having colonized it as part of Lessepsian migration through the Suez Canal.[1] Fish of this family are characterized by their flat bodies, forked tail fins, and long pectoral fins.[2]

Silver pomfrets are usually silver/white in color, with few small scales. They can grow up to a range of 4–6 kg (8–13 lb). However, due to overfishing, specimens weighing less than 1 kg (2 lb) are more commonly seen.

The silver pompano should not be mistaken for the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), which is a jackfish found off the coast of Florida in the Gulf of Mexico, and neither should be confused with true pompanos, which are of the family Bramidae.

The black pomfret (Parastromateus niger) is a species of carangid native to reefs of the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific Ocean, where it is found at depths from 15 to 105 m (49 to 344 ft), though it is rarely found deeper than 40 m (130 ft). This species grows to 75 cm (30 in) in total length and is very important to local commercial fisheries. This species is the only known member of its genus.

  • One of the famous freshwater fish in Indonesia is the pomfret fish. Marukoban, or this pomfret fish, have a high concentration of nutrition in it. However, there are not many people who likes to consume it lately, the number of people who consume this fish is way lower than those who consume tuna or even catfish. But if you really consider yourself as a seafood lover, then you really need to try this fish.

Latest research done in Japan Food Research Laboratories shows that the omega 3 content in Japanese pomfret fish is the highest of all, with 2,56 grams of omega 3 fatty acid. The omega 3 fatty acid itself is one of the essential fatty acids. The omega 3 is a nutrition that is really needed by the body, however, the body can’t produce it thus we need to obtain it from other sources.

As for black pomfret fish, it contains a high concentration of omega 3 and omega 6 AA. Other vital content in pomfret fish is numbers of vitamin. The vitamins are vitamin A, B1, and D. Unfortunately, we cant’t consume all of the nutrition in pomfret fish. We only get to consume about 80% of the good taste of pomfret fish.

    Tuna

A tuna is a saltwater fish that belongs to the tribe Thunnini, a sub-grouping of the mackerel family (Scombridae). Thunnini comprises fifteen species across five genera,[1] the sizes of which vary greatly, ranging from the bullet tuna (max. length: 50 cm (1.6 ft), weight: 1.8 kg (4 lb)) up to the Atlantic bluefin tuna (max. length: 4.6 m (15 ft), weight: 684 kg (1,508 lb)). • 2 m (6.6 ft), and is believed to live for up to 50 years. When canned and packaged for sale, the product is sometimes called tuna fish.

Tuna and mackerel sharks are the only species of fish that can maintain a body temperature higher than that of the surrounding water. An active and agile predator, the tuna has a sleek, streamlined body, and is among the fastest-swimming pelagic fish – the yellowfin tuna, for example, is capable of speeds of up to 75 km/h (47 mph).[2] Found in warm seas, it is extensively fished commercially, and is popular as a game fish. As a result of overfishing, stocks of some tuna species, such as the southern bluefin tuna, are close to extinction

Tuna is an important commercial fish. The International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) compiled a detailed scientific report on the state of global tuna stocks in 2009, which includes regular updates. According to the ISSF, the most important species for commercial and recreational tuna fisheries are yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), bigeye (T. obesus), bluefin (T. thynnus, T. orientalis, and T. macoyii), albacore (T. alalunga), and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis).

  • Tuna can be a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. It can contain 300 milligrams (0.011 oz) per serving.[79] However, the level of omega-3 oils found in canned tuna is highly variable, since some common manufacturing methods destroy much of the omega-3 oils in the fish.[80] Tuna is also a good source of protein.

  • Conclusion: For increasing the supply of marine fishes among people an efficient fish marketing system

is vital requisite. Though Karwan Bazar, Gabtoli Karwan Bazar, Gabtoli are not competitive in view of the

huge gap between demand and supply and also suffering from ill-management, unsatisfactory state of

market structure, unhygienic and unscientific conditions; the fish marketing system in these markets is

quite efficient. Despite many problems these markets are still regard as an important and one of the

biggest fish market in Dhaka city especially for marine fish.
