Oxtober 26, 2016‘Fame – the Musical’ coming to Potter Center

Relive the pulse-pounding thrill of future performers when “Fame – The Musical” comes to the Potter Center stage at Jackson College, at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 4.

At New York City’s legendary High School for Performing Arts, “Fame” takes the audience through the highs, the lows, the romances and the ultimate triumphs of the star-struck pupils in their quest for success. In spring 1980, over 4,000 young hopefuls auditioned for the New York City High School for the Performing Arts. Only 97 students were admitted … the cream of the crop!

“Fame – The Musical” is a full-throttle journey traversing the struggles, fears, heartaches and triumphs of young artists navigating the worlds of dance, music and theater. Conceived from the unforgettable Academy Award-winning 1980 film and subsequent Emmy Award-winning television series, this unmistakable title has been brilliantly transformed into riveting musical theater.

Creator and producer of the MGM film “Fame” David De Silva has made a career out of promoting the value of theater arts in education and life. He was consulting producer on the 1980s television show of the same name, and conceived and developed “Fame – The Musical.” “It’s groundbreaking” because it doesn’t use one voice to tell the story, but instead features 25 actors and singers, plus sound effects. “My love of theater has always been the key to me. My reward is the theater experience. That, to me, is the most exciting thing.”

“Fame – The Musical” is nothing short of an international sensation with worldwide attendance exceeding 50 million people in some 25 countries. This ‘must-see’ entertainment continues to reach and inspire generations of performers and audience members alike.

Tickets for “Fame – The Musical” are $42, $37 and $28 and may be purchased by calling the Potter Center Box Office, 517.796.8600, or online at www.jccmi.edu/pottercenter.

October 20, 2016Don’t miss the Be One Tour with Natalie Grant & Danny Gokey!

Enjoy the uplifting music of Natalie Grant and Danny Gokey when the Be One Tour stops at Potter Center at Jackson College, at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

Natalie Grant is known for her powerful and soaring vocals, heart-gripping lyrics and passionate performances, and has remained one of the top-selling Christian & Gospel artists since her 2005 breakout RIAA Gold-certified album, “Awaken.” She has since gone on to have over 3 million in career sales. The Gospel Music Association has named her Female Vocalist of the Year five times and she has had multiple No. 1’s on the Billboard singles and albums charts, including her most recent record titled “Be One.” More than just music and awards, Grant has built a relationship with her fan base on a personal level that goes well beyond the music. Though she is a Seattle native, Natalie makes her home in Nashville, Tenn. with her husband, producer/songwriter Bernie Herms and their three children.

Danny Gokey, encouraged by his late wife who passed away one month before his audition, finished in third place on Season Eight of “American Idol.” He followed his Idol experience with a debut album that went to No. 4 on the Billboard charts and earned Gokey the best opening-week sales by a debut country male artist inNatalie Grant, Danny Gokey 18 years. After returning to his roots in Gospel, Gokey was nominated for 2015’s New Artist of the Year and Song of the Year (“Hope In Front Of Me”) at the GMA Dove Awards. On Gokey’s new album, “Hope in Front of Me,” the Milwaukee native delivers a potent collection of songs brought vividly to life by his warm, soulful voice. “I wanted to mix hope and entertainment but not in a way that would be cliché or sappy,” Gokey said.

Don’t miss this evening of inspiration! Tickets for the Be One Tour with Natalie Grant and Danny Gokey are $40, $35 and $32, and may be purchased by calling 517.796.8600, or online at www.jccmi.edu/pottercenter.

October 17, 2016Strengthening the Bridge forum continues discussion of race, police relationship

Jackson College will host a community discussion on “Strengthening the Bridge: The Relationship Between the Criminal Justice System and the African-American Community,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20 at St. Johns United Church, 801 S. Mechanic St., Jackson.

This will be the second such forum, the first held in 2015. Several high-profile events continue to shine a light on issues with African-Americans and law enforcement, prompting the need for further discussion. Lee Hampton, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at Jackson College, said he’s heard from people in the community about strengthening the bridge between the criminal justice system and the African-American community, in particular, African-American males. Jackson College has hosted two African-American Male Summits through the years, and President Daniel Phelan encourages reaching out and serving as a resource to the larger community on important issues that affect us all, Hampton said.

“We want to continue the dialogue about some of the historical challenges and what can we do as a local community to strengthen that bridge,” Hampton said. “If an incident were to take place that would be sensitive, do we have action steps that we could take to help mediate the situation before it escalates?”

This is a free event; students and community members are welcome..

October 17, 2016Jackson College receives ‘veteran-friendly’ Gold Status

Committed to the success of student veterans, Jackson College recently earned gold-level status from the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency for 2016-17. Jackson College is one of 65 colleges and universities who recently earned bronze-, silver- or gold-level status based on their commitment to providing on-campus, veteran-centric services to student veterans. The Veteran-Friendly School program, created by the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, recognizes institutions of higher learning for their dedication to student veterans and dependents utilizing their GI Bill and other educational benefits. This is the program’s second year; last year 57 schools were ranked.

Jackson College offers a dedicated Veterans Center, now located in the newly renovated Bert Walker Hall. Students may participate in a Student Veterans of America organization, which welcomes student veterans and others to provide connection and networking opportunities and ease the transition from military to academic life. A dedicated staff member assists student veterans with their education benefits. Career coaching and advising is offered. These are just some of the service offered to student veterans.

“Jackson College is committed to helping our student veterans make a successful transition to their academic life,” said Dr. Kristi Hottenstein, vice president of student services. “We are pleased with this recognition, and moreover, we are grateful for the opportunity to serve those who have given of themselves to serve our nation. We are privileged to help each student veteran reach their future goals.”

Twelve new schools are featured in this year’s ranking. Overall, 44 schools were awarded gold, 17 earned silver and four took home the bronze. For a full list of the schools included in the rankings, visit www.michiganveterans.com. “We had outstanding applicants, with more than half of this year’s veteran-friendly schools achieving a gold-level designation,” said James Robert Redford, MVAA director. “These colleges and universities have proven their dedication to the men and women who have served their country by ensuring they succeed in achieving their educational goals.”

The veteran-friendly designation is available to any institution of higher learning eligible to receive veteran education benefits, regardless of size, location or program delivery. Institutions apply annually for a designation, with an application and review process conducted every spring semester. Student veterans or dependents with questions about GI Bill or other federal benefits should call 800-MICH-VET (800-642-4838) or visit www.michiganveterans.com.

October 14, 2016You won’t believe your eyes at The Magic of Bill Blagg Live!

Jaw-dropping illusions combine with winning humor for a fun night out at The Magic of Bill Blagg Live, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21 at the Potter Center at Jackson College.

To say that Bill Blagg has had a magical life would be no exaggeration. He received his first professional magic book from his great-grandfather, which eventually led to building magic props with his dad. These early beginnings paved the way for what is now known as The Magic of Bill Blagg. Today, he is one of the nation’s top touring illusionists. His theatrical brand of magic thrills thousands of people every single year.

Bill’s live performances leave people in complete disbelief as he creates the impossible in a way only he can do. He prides himself in performing new, never-before-seen illusions such as the world’s only rideable hoverboard. He is also known for instantly teleporting across theaters, squishing his body from 6 feet to 6 inches tall, passing through the blades of an industrial fan, and much more! Bill constantly receives standing ovations from those who experience his one-of-a-kind talents. He looks forward to sharing his blend of magic, personality and performance with you! Tickets are $28, $22 and $15; special $5 off each ticket for students & children 12 years and under. Tickets may be purchased online at www.jccmi.edu/pottercenter, or call 517.796.8600.
