Friday 3rd July

Steers to £1240 Heifers to £1090

Excellent numbers forward considering it’s now July and although the entry lacked the many big, forward and suckler bred

headliners seen of late, those that were on offer sold to another very strong trade. Store steers topped a £1240 for a well-

shaped British Blue (23m) from Bernard Rendell of Colyton followed by further shapely Blue bullocks (27m) at £1200 for

Phillip Slade of Calverleigh and £1180 achieved for later born (22m) Blues off the same farm, even younger ones (15m)

saw £1030 for Peter Heard of Yelland, Okehampton. A tremendous Limousin steer (just 16m) from Andy & Wendy Reed

of Blackborough sold well at £1195 whilst a couple of eye catching Simmental bullocks of that age also looked decent

money at £1150 apiece for Dave Pollard of Black Dog and a pen of four smart South Devon steers (again at 16m) drew

£1130 a life for JP Matthews & Son of Torpoint. Further South Devon bred steers (19m) of note saw a pair from John

Cuming of Feniton ease to £1125 whilst a strong Hereford steer (25m) took home £1135 for Trevor & Sue Crocker of

Diptford. A pen of four super Limousin bred steers (25m) from D Strout & Son, Rilla Mill saw £1110 apiece and Best

Aberdeen Angus steers (26m) drew £1100 for Phillip Slade again. Peter Heard led the way with his younger stores for the

third week running with well bred and grown yearling Charolais steers reaching £1030. No really close to finished store

heifers on show, although a cracking three quarter meat British Blue (28m) from James Thomas of Truro did reach £1090

and a younger (16m) blue made £1050 for Bernard Rendell once more. An overage (33m) Hereford heifer from Mark White

of Branscombe sold for £1000 followed by younger Hereford females (25m) at £970 for Trevor & Sue Crocker. Aberdeen

Angus Heifers (27m) reached £945 for Mark White and £920 (26m) for John Reddaway & Sons of Cossick Cross. Peter

Heard sold young heifers of the highest quality with his pair of Limousin’s (14m) drawing £945 a head and a bunch of four

strong Charolais types (13m) reached £900 apiece.

Numbers tighter on the week but meeting a stand on trade with the best topping at £790 for Limousin cross steers from

Nigel Baverstock of Doddiscombsleigh (11m), Terry & Jean Tall of Modbury showed 13 month old Angus steers achieving

£760, the same figure achieved for Ian Balsdon & family of Okehampton with Simmental cross steers (10m) whilst younger

sorts of the same good farm hit £735 (6m) with Charolais cross steers (5m) obtaining £715. David Bartlett down from

Wellington achieved £710 for dairy Simmental cross steers (11m) with younger sorts to £630. Further Limousin cross steers

from Nigel Baverstock achieved £705 (11m) with John Hampton of Lustleigh showing dairy bred Hereford cross steers to

£645 (13m). Heifers topped at £725 for Dave Luckett of Cornwood (12m) with young Charolais cross heifers from Ian

Balsdon and family achieving £660 (6m) with Simmental heifers off the same good farm (10m) achieving £590 whilst Blues

from Gareth Hutchings of Launceston obtained £555 (12m).

A tight entry of calves saw a flying trade! What we

lacked in numbers was made up for in quality, a

huge credit to all our vendors! Top of the day was

£398 for a cracking British Blue bull from Ashley &

Jess Bond of Honiton who sold a super run with

others to £378 & £295. Len, Angela & Jack Bartlett

of Honiton sold a super run of Blue bulls to £345,

£340 & £335. Charolais bulls topped at £390 for Ian

Balsdon and family of Okehampton with others to

£330 Mr CJ Lee of Exeter who topped the Limousin

bulls at £370 & £335. Very young Aberdeen Angus

bulls sold well to £235 twice for Rob & Jack Chapple

of Axminster and Len, Angela & Jack Bartlett. Heifers topped at £370 for a Charolais from Ian Balsdon and family with

others to £285 & £255 for Andrew & Rose Retter of Honiton who also topped the British Blue heifers at £332. Other Blue

heifers to £330 for Ashley & Jess Bond who sold a super run of heifers with others to £285, £282 & £272 and Len, Angela

& Jack Bartlett sold their best to £260 & £255. Limousin heifers to £252 for Mr CJ Lee and an outstanding Hereford heifer

to £252 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe. Friesians a strong trade to £100 for Buddleford Farm Partnership of Clyst Hydon.

Store Lambs to £95.50 Breeders to £102 Grazers to £79 Couples to £210

1799 STORE LAMBS

A phenomenal entry of all but 1800 store lambs, the biggest seen at any point in July for many years, let alone the first

week sold to another fiery trade for all forward. A great entry quality wise, with lambs and buyers travelling from afar to

catch the trade and numbers that Exeter has to offer. Best short keep lambs to £95.50 for Paul Bowden of Drewsteignton,

£94 & £90.50 for the best of a good run from Peter Jones of Bratton Clovelly and £89 for John Gilbert of East Allington.

Away from this handful of pens of killing lambs Chris Fisher of Harbertonford sold Jacob ram lambs to £88.50 followed by

John Quick of Coldridge with pens at £87.50 & £86.50, also £86.50 for Rich Berry of Kenn and a whole host of pens selling

from £79 to £86. Medium keep lambs to finish on summer and autumn grass looking very well sold and trading from £65

to £78 and the longer term lambs just as dear with the majority around the £60 mark, very few less than £54 and just two

lots selling below £50! The overall average was £68.99, down just 30p on the week with four times the number of lambs

sold.

28 BREEDING EWES

Breeders sold to £102 for a double pen of F/BM Dorset’s that have been running with Suffolk rams for three weeks from

Ray Tucker of Bridford and recently weaned Suffolk crosses of the same age sold to £85 for Mike Brown of Shaftsbury.

48 GRAZING EWES

Grazers to £79 for a Suffolk cross ewe from Graham Nicholls of Parracombe who also had recently weaned Swales at £40.

Dorset ewes to £68 for RG, C & P Hartnell of Southleigh and hoggs with lambs teeth selling well at £65.50 for Rob Harding

of Lympstone.

23 EWES & 33 LAMBS (56 LIVES)

An unprecedented number of couples for the time of year were extremely well received with Mike Brown topping both

doubles and singles at £210 & £164 respectively whilst Robert & Christine Steer of Avonwick had a Dorset with young

double at £200. Mike Brown also parted with a big pen of ewes with young doubles at £190 as Mervyn Brice of Stoodleigh

sold Suffolk x hogg singles at £147 and a smaller double at £168 and Rex Barrett travelled up from Truro to claim £134 for

his single.
