THE WHOLE STORY Business Objective

The health and safety team at Markem-Imaje’s Keene, New Hampshire facility set out to obtain OHSAS 18001 certification in early 2013, with two main goals in mind. Firstly, they were interested in driving standardization and improvement across the health and safety function. Secondly, they wanted a single aligned business system to manage both environmental risks as well as health and safety risks. The health and safety team, consisting of three full time employees and an intern, realized that this was an ambitious undertaking for their small but hard-working team. The team knew they would need to implement a software system to increase their efficiency at performing job hazard analyses – and hoped to find a system that delivered value well beyond the certification process. Once the JHA Software was in place, Markem-Imaje’s health and safety team, with the support of the facility’s management, was able to perform almost 450 JHAs in a single year, and prioritize the necessary controls – all for the certification process. But, the system has had additional benefits for the team. The consolidated risk score has enabled them to determine where they should be focusing their resources to drive improvement and efficiency across the facility. They also use JHAs as part of the change management process, when implementing a new operation in their facility, to identify and eliminate risks proactively, before injury occurs. Furthermore, the health and safety team has found unexpected benefit by sharing the easy-to-understand risk assessments with their employees, to help encourage employees to generate their own ideas for decreasing risks – helping to drive a culture of safety within the facility.
