30 Fonts found in the environ-ment mostly in company signs, 2 cups, 2 cars, a newspaper vendor and 3 awareness signs

Driving through Market Street in The Woodlands I noticed this advertisement for The Gap. The white font here shows up effectively with a dark blue background. The GAP logo is a recognizable piec of histo-

ry and is used here in a hierarchy with the word GAP as the store name in large letters and the word KIDS un-derneath and smaller being the type of store it is. I like this one because of its elegance in form with use

thin and thick lines matched with the use of straightness of height balancedwith the unique curved serifs.

On one sunday afternoon my friend and I decided to go get Chick-Fil-A but they were closed. I liked this font be-cause it flows nicely with curves almost throughout the whole title. It is not too ordered and still neat and play-ful, This is a fast food sign that sticks out beside the place and it looks like the font is quickly written rath-er than stenciled in getting the points and lines perfect. It says to come here and relax. It has a hint of humanism because the lack of order in not being positioned flat on the bottom as the old texts are being written on straight lines.

After church on a sunday afternoon my father wanted me to pick him up some food from Pappadeaux. As fate would have it while I was waiting for my to-go order and watching the Texans at the bar I recieved this to=go cup and noticed it was covered with many different font styles. The words Pappadeaux and Seafood Kitchen stand out from the rest being red and bigger. The smaller and lighter colored words describe different food selections the restaurant has to offer. This font is scattered aboutin a

Southern and unreformed style but still looks refined and legible.

I was driving down the frontage road on the way to the library one day and I noticed this sign more closely than I had before being in a college class that studies fonts. I decided I was going to come back and take a picture because it is a good sign and the letters look like an old typewriter’s lettering the way the serifs have ink-blot shapes. This sign has probably been used to attract people since the time when the typewriter was a popular office tool and it’s bright red color is very noticeable and accentuated

by the semicircle shape of the overhang entry-way below.

On tuesday morning before my Design class at UHD I decided to go for a drive specifically to look for font on Shepherd Dr. . This was a successful venture that turned up many examples including this SUPER K sign that I picked because of it’s good example expressing hierarchy in size. Basically it is noticeable because it is very large. These letters are gutted out revealing the inner light tube workings. I will have to go back at night and see what it looks like. The letters are bold with drastic serifs that

help it to stand out farther.

After watching a Texaz A&M game with two of my friends I decided to go take a picture of the Starbucks sign because it is one of my favorite signs. I am not sure why exactly I like this sign but it is colorful with a bold font that would not look normal in paragraph. It looks modern and reformed with its precision in directional letters and straight neatness

Font Type:San Serif

This font is brown like achocolate do-nut and is actually part of a do-nut. It is on a cup on the side of the road near the Bush Airport. The red stripe around it is supposed to attract attention and once you are interested in the Shipley label there is a smaller font below with the website. Many to-go cups are plain but Shipley Do-nuts put their logo on the cup so people would

see the advertizing.

When I was driving one morning specifically hunting for fonts I saw this. I liked it because it reminded me of the humanist movement that occured during the Reaissance that swayed away from the normal type into forms such as Italics. This one is a good example of Spanish culture and you can tell that it is taking the letters into a cultural form that is recognizable. It also is surrounded by the yellow and blue colors that are used in several flags throughout latin america. The people that would recog-

nize these aspects are the ones that wouuld be interested in getting an issue. The words are humanistically ona curve too.

I remembered the ROSS store after visiting Chick-Fil-A on a sunday. I noticed the font looked more interesting to me when I viewedit in detail and noticed a retro look that was not obvious to me before. It looks like a Program-influenced font from the eighties when computers were on the rise. It is very interesting becaue it has it’s own style. The name of the store is in the biggest letters and on top because it is the most important part with the smaller letters underneath describing the service provided.

This font is a very big sign at the entryway to a parking lot at the Tinseltown movie theatre in The Woodlands. You are supposed to notice the circle. The P is very big and hard to miss inviting you to park. This is a good example of the effectiveness of font

through hierarchy because of the placement and size.

Font Type:San Serif

This sign is blackon white and this contrast makes it very noticeable. I liked it because it looks like the font of the Bauhaus movement being very clean and direct. This sign was in front of the Woodlands Conference Center and directs people through

the parking lot.

I was walking through Market Street and I noticed this font and decided it was inluenced by the program style in a digital way because there are many similar corresponding lines in each of the letters such as the U and N sharing the two straight lines and the e and c are the same to but with a difference of a line through the middle. It is like an old computer that has limited places to put the lines for letters in. The hierarchy here is that the white color is readable with a touch of dark er color around it and

the company name is in big letters drawing you in to read the service listed below.

Font Type:San Serif

Page 15: Markallcorn project1

I like this one because it forms shapes such as a square and triangles. I noticed it while walking through Market Street and found it to be of the program influence from the rise of computers of the 80s because it looks like it used the old program that had a blinking cursor and woul move around not stopping and leaving a path in it’s wake. It would only turn at right angles. The

bright white font color is effective here in the darker atmosphere it is in.

This jeep logo is very distinctive and well rounded. The letters are nice and even with one another. I was walking by my jeep and took a closer look. That is when I decided to snap a photo. These letters look like the Bauhaus movement.

This sign is unnique from most with its thin lines in squared direction but still maintaining it’s curves. It is different showing that California is different. But more spec[fically the restaurant. The white shows up well on the black surface and the emphasis is on the word California with PIZZA KITCHEN still placed importantly. I like this sign because it is different and many of the letters are in uniform making it nice visibly and easy to read. The space between the thin lines helps this too. I was still in my

car driving through RIVER OAKSlooking for fonts when I took this.

This photo was taken in my driveway when I walked past it Inoticed it. It looks like a Bauhaus influence and not suprisingly since it is on a Porsche from Germany. It is black and dull smooth letters on a more shiny background with texture to help it stand out in this logo. The letters are box with nice cornering. I like it because it is spresd out looking with space making it

legible.

This font is a good example of color hierarchy. I was walking aroung looking at the ducks and geese.

This font is on the wall near a door on a plaque that lets people know who is meeting in the room. I was walking past it whan I noticed this green font that is supposed to represent The Woodlands.

Font Type:Serif

This is a humanist influence with the italics and looks very nicely blended in with the color of the truck but the sportword reaches out and grabs you in this picture I took while leaving the Conference Center.

This reminds me of afont that was popular in the 60s and before and looks like it is influenced from the byzantine empire with their colorful lettering used in illustrations to tell stories. It looks like a royal font that could have been used in the Reniassance

as well. It stands out nicely on this building with just brick behind it nothing is destracting you from the font.

Font Type:W Serif

Photo Date:10/7, 1:30PM Place: The Woodlands Market Street

Page 23: Markallcorn project1

This font reminds me of the 60s when Paris was very popular and in the movies a lot. The Eiffel tower was the tallest structure in the world and these tall and thin letters look like they would be in an Audrey Hepburn movie.

Font Type:San Serif

Photo Date:10/7, 1:34PM Place: The Woodlands Market Street

Page 24: Markallcorn project1

While I was walking through Market Street I noticed the warm summer color here placed on the tan oval and the cursive matches with straight lines being an effective noticeable contrast and the whole texture of this sign is smooth and absorbing. It

looks like adobe used in making very old houses in America.

Font Type:San Serif

Photo Date:10/7, 1:35PM Place: Market Street

Page 25: Markallcorn project1

The noticeability is good here. It looks like a Bauhaus and has very clean lines on this banner that was over my head while walking on the path.

Font Type:San Serif

Photo Date:10/7, 1:36PM Place: The Woodlands Market Street

Page 26: Markallcorn project1

This font looks old western to me adn has probably been there from at least the 60s. It has depth and is overpowering at night being lined with light bulbs it invites people to read the smaller font below that lists the movie names.

Font Type:Serif

Photo Date:10/8, 8AM Place: River Oaks Shop-ping Center

Page 27: Markallcorn project1

The letters are neat to look at because of the very long ascending and descending heights in this picture I took from my car while stopped at a light.

Font Type:San Serif

Page 28: Markallcorn project1

The Serifs are very nice here and the font is very fluid and in uniform in this picture taken from my car.

This sign is by the road by the airport letting you know of food with it’s bright colors. I got out of my car to take this picture of the sign from a Valero gas station.

I parked and took this picture because it reminded me of tradition.

This font is bold but still has a lot of good space around it making it noticeable in this picture taken from my car.

This font I took a picture of from my car is on a big sign raised high with good coloring and the letters are pieced together as different parts of a house are and it is supposed to make since being that this is a home store.
