Our last "White Christmas" came in 2002 when rain turned to snow that accumulated about an inch. Snow has fallen on Christmas Day in Baltimore only a dozen times since

1872. Lets hope that our luck will be different this year. I would hate to travel just to see a White Christmas.

Thanksgiving is only a few days away and many resorts across the U.S. have already opened up their slopes. Although most BSC members don’t venture out on the slopes until after the holidays, some of us will be traveling north to start our season early.

December meeting will be our holiday affair. Bring your appetite. It will also be our annual election. Currently, everyone is running unopposed. This is the first time in 15 years that you will not see my name on the ballot. If you like to put your name in to run for any position, come to our meeting and ask to be put on the ballot.

The proceeds from this month’s 50/50 raffle will benefit the Maryland School for the Blind. The money raised will go towards the purchase of ear-phones so that teachers can more easily be heard when giving verbal instructions to the students. We will also be collecting gently used winter clothing for the students - for their ski program as well as for just playing in the snow!

Some trips will be closing soon so you need to act if you still want to get on board. Although some western trips are sold out, spots may open due to cancellation. We will let you know thru Constant Contact on trips that open up and there is no one on the wait list. Sometimes there may be discounts on such said trips. We will also use Constant Contact for last minute skiing at local resorts when snow is in the air.

Don’t forget to go on our website (now www.baltimoreskiclub.org) to take the new trips survey. Where do you want to ski in 2020?

In keeping with the season spirit, Mark, Sharon, Gloria and I wish everyone Happy Holidays from the Jones Family and hope to see you at our December party.

Haunted Ski Resorts and Safe Travels

The guest speaker for BSC’s meeting in November was Charlie Leocha, who entertained us with tall tales about ghosts in haunted ski resorts and he also reminded us about the more serious aspects of safe traveling. Charlie’s narrative began in New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington Inn and continued through Vermont locations such as: Stowe’s Green Mountain Inn and the Brass Lantern Inn; Stratton’s Equinox Hotel (Manchester); and Mt. Snow’s White House Inn (Brattleboro). One story focused on a tap dancing ghost nicknamed Boots who can still be heard in room 302 of the Green Mountain Inn. Although Charlie Leocha proposed that the hotel management pipes the tap-dancing sound into the room at night. He also mentioned the ghost parties at the Brass Lantern,

where visitors could hear the boisterous parties, but when they opened the door the room was empty. Fortunately, BSC members stayed at the Commodore Inn during last year’s trip to Stowe and were protected from these spooky characters. Charlie also disclosed an enigmatic story about Mrs. Abe Lincoln who was known to vacation at Stratton. Ultimately, he suggested that we should accept these ghost-tales with a “believe it or not” attitude.

As the stories unfolded, Charlie shifted to the West Coast with Oregon’s Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood. The exterior of this lodge was used in Kubrick’s film, The Shining. He also disclosed that the indoor scenes of this film were shot at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado. Another eerie tale is associated with the Prospector Restaurant in Breckenridge, Colorado. A previous owner of this restaurant, Sylvia, is a ghost who may only seen by men (because Sylvia was always looking for a husband). Since Breckenridge originated as a mining town, there are also rumors about the ghosts of men who died in the mines. Perhaps some of these male apparitions can only be seen by women. Charlie’s supernatural anecdotes continued to Durango’s Strater Hotel, and the Forest Queen Hotel in Crested Butte. Paranormal activity was also reported in California (near Mammoth Mountain) and southern New Mexico resorts. Canada is not exempt from specters, and so Charlie revealed that in Banff “Sam the Bellman”, who wears a kilt, has been sighted by hotel guests who have ordered room-service.

The last ten minutes of Charlie Leocha’s presentation focused on consumer advocacy of his organization, Travelers United. He has also published a book entitled Travel Rights. Charlie is a nationally-acclaimed consumer spokesman for airline issues that pertain to: tarmac-delay regulations; baggage compensation; delayed boarding; family seating arrangements; and most recently, the size of personal seat-space. He pointed out that the standards established by the Federal Aviation Administration are connected to safety and health regulations.

If you missed the meeting or would simply enjoy a repeat of Charlie Leocha’s presentation, there is a video that BSC member, Jim Curtis, uploaded to YouTube. You can view the presentation at:

2020 Trips Survey now available!!!

Dear fellow members: It’s time to let your opinion be heard! As members this may be the most important duty you have to perform besides renewing your membership, and signing up for trips, and making your trip payments. Ok, so maybe it’s

the 4th most important thing. Whatever. Now is the time to let the Trips Committee know your preferences. Please go to Survey Monkey and take the very a short survey. IYou can link to it from the Baltimore Ski Club Facebook page or if you’re Facebook illiterate (as I am) you can copy and paste the following link into browser. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/V6BBTV9 Questions? Dave Karczmarek 443-243-8540 E-mail: [email protected]

THE WINNER’S CIRCLE Each month, from September through April, there’s a landmark activity at the BSC general membership meetings - - gambling! You will usually see Mark Chapman circulating with

tickets for a 50/50 raffle. During the November meeting, Rick Todd won $75.00 and the balance was donated to Maryland School for the Blind. The same raffle also awarded three lift tickets to Ski Liberty, Whitetail and Roundtop which were won by Bill Shewchuk, Jeff McBride, and John Landon. These were pretty good prizes for a $5 investment on 6 tickets, and helped BSC to support a good cause. Just remember the old adage: You gotta play to win!

The Baltimore Ski Club Offers Heartfelt Condolences to

John Wotel On the recent loss of his wife

Ann

Hassell Golden Vass JULY 10, 1922 ~ OCTOBER 30, 2018 (AGE 96)

On October 30, 2018; Hassell Golden Vass, SSG, born July 10, 1922, in Carroll, County, VA. After 18 years on the farm, he moved to Baltimore, MD to work at Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company. He was drafted in December 1942 and went to Ft. Meade, MD staging area, then transferred to Ft. Bliss, TX for basic training. In April 1943 he joined the 10th Mtn. Div. as a second cook, later promoted to Mess Sergeant. He was wounded on Mt. Pizzo Di Campiano and spent six months in the hospital and convalescing. Receiving honorable discharge Sept. 24, 1945 at Camp Pickett, VA his medals include: Good Conduct, Expert Rifleman, Combat Infantry, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He was married to the late Iva Rakes for 56 years.

FROM 2008...The Baltimore Ski Club was honored to have Mr. Hassell Vass, who served with the legendary WWII alpine fighting force, the 10th Mountain Division, and Ms. Abbie Kealy, a 10th Mountain descendent and the Writer, Producer and Director of the “The Last Ridge”, an inspirational documentary for PBS who spoke at our January 2nd General meeting.

Hassell recounted his experiences of serving with the 10th Mountain Division from his training at Camp Hale in Colorado to how he was evacuated from the mountains via the tramway system when he was injured during the battle at Riva Ridge.

After the war, many of the veterans of the 10th Mountain Division came home to leave their mark of influence on the ski industry. There is not a ski resort in American that wasn’t touched in some way by the 10th. Many of the prominent ski areas in the U.S. were started or managed by 10th vets, including Vail, Aspen, and Ski Cooper. One vet founded NIKE, another vet was Senator Bob Dole who ran for president. A dozen made the Olympic ski team and another coached that team.

Hassell and his peers will be missed.

‘Face of Winter’ Pays Homage to One of Skiing’s Greatest Legends While the man might be gone, Warren Miller’s legacy will live forever

October 17, 2018 by Jack Foersterling If you pull any skier off the mountain and ask them what the first ski movie they ever saw was, odds are good that one man’s name will be the first words out of their mouth—Warren Miller. The founding father of the modern ski movie, the late Warren Miller spent over six decades of his long 93 years dedicated to telling the story of the skier. The newest film from Warren Miller Entertainment, the company Miller founded back in 1949, takes that dedication and crafts it into a beautiful homage to the man who pioneered the genre of the ski movie. Ripe with throwback footage from every decade of Miller’s work

dating as far back as the ’50s, Face of Winter’s focus isn’t on pro skiers cramming as much crazy footage into their segment as possible, but rather examining what it is about skiing that brings us all together every winter, year after year. While Warren Miller may be gone, the countless interviews throughout Face of Winter prove that his impact, both through his personal interactions and his films, is far from over. For as long as people continue to ski, there will be people to film it, and with each and every press of the record button, Miller’s legacy endures. While it’s said plenty of times throughout the film, it’s worth saying again: Thanks, Warren.

BSC Trips Cancellation Policy

1. The Club does not intend to unduly penalize a trip participant who cancels from a BSC trip. However, other trip participants should not have to incur additional costs due to your cancellation.

2. Deposits and payments made toward the trip reservations being cancelled will be held until such time as a determination can be made that the Club or trip participants will not incur additional costs due to non-recoverable costs.

3. Non-recoverable costs are defined as those that are associated with the trip that due to contractual obligations cannot be recovered when the individual cancels his/her trip. Non-recoverable also include those costs associated with replacing a person or persons on a trip (i.e., name change charges on airline tickets, etc.) Refunds, if any, will be made based on the non-recoverable involved plus a cancellation fee. Cancellation costs will not exceed the cost of the trip. Club cancellation fee will be dropped if non-recoverable costs exceed 50% of the trip cost.

4. Replacement of a trip participant by a trip participant is strictly prohibited. Only the Trip Leader or Assistant Trip Leader can replace a trip participant who is unable to go on the trip. The canceling trip participant may suggest a replacement candidate to the trip leader or assistant trip leader, however the canceling trip participant is responsible for the cancellation fee (if applicable) and any non-recoverable costs.

5. Be sure to know the cancellation dates in relation to the trip you select so that you can avoid monetary losses. The following cancellation policy in is effect in relation to BSC trips. NR=Non-recoverable costs
