It was a lovely way to finish a very busy term and Celebrant Father Kevin Murphy commissioned 24 Extra-Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. In their welcome to the Mass, the Chanel House Leaders Kate Chew-Lit, Rosemary Han and Aimee Trainor spoke about the life of St Peter Chanel, the house patron and the first martyr of Oceania. The theme they chose for the Mass was ‘Dedication through faith’. They said “St. Peter Chanel is a prime example of someone who showed dedication to his faith in the face of difficulties. Even though his environment was dangerous, St. Peter Chanel remained faithful to his daily routine of prayer and celebration of Mass. He stayed dedicated to God’s word, even at the cost of his life. He did not hesitate, he listened, obeyed and put all his trust in God. He gave an outstanding testimony of his love for Christ and Mary through his word and his life. Peter Chanel sailed into the Pacific and went to Futuna as a missionary, to teach the Good News to the local people. Times were tough, but as he was sailing, the sun rose and gave him new hope, courage and a stronger faith in God each day. In Futuna, St. Peter Chanel was surrounded by a different culture and a different way of life. Despite all efforts to befriend the people, many did not want anything to do with him. He had to suffer great hardships and disappointments. The work seemed hopeless: only a few had been baptised, and the chieftain continued to be suspicious and hostile. Then, when the chief’s son asked for baptism, the chief was so angry that he sent warriors to kill the missionary. On April 18th 1841 St. Peter Chanel died a martyr. Peter Chanel’s violent death brought about the conversion of the island and the people of Futuna remain Catholic to this day. Peter Chanel was beatified in 1889 and canonised in 1954. May we be guided by his example to dedicate each day to God through our faith.” Thank you for all your support in so many ways throughout the term. From the PrincipalDear Parents and Guardians,

Today we celebrated Chanel House Mass.

May we be guided by his example to dedicate each day to God through our faith.”

Thank you for all your support in so many ways throughout the term. We have had some wonderful events and it is very pleasing to see students so enthusiastic about their learning. Congratulations to all girls who have set themselves goals and made a positive start to the year. We hope that they are able to have a relaxing break and return refreshed when we start Term 2.

On Thursday 7th April in the Drama Studio, Year 12 Drama students performed an adapted version of The Songmaker’s Chair by Albert Wendt.

Auckland, one summer weekend in the mid 1990’s. A family fused together by the energies of multicultural Aotearoa New Zealand faces meltdown as tensions build between migrant and New Zealand-born generations, and between Samoan, Maori and Palagi family members.

The Year 12 students gave an outstanding performance. Their audience laughed, cried and sang along. We are incredibly proud of the time, effort and commitment they put into their performance. Their hard work really paid off. We are also very grateful to the Y13 Performing Arts Technology students who designed and operated the lighting for this show. Well Done Girls!

Some comments on the show….

“The show was captivating, moving and very emotional. Showed an in-depth look into the lives of migrant families.”

“The students gave believable performances.”

“Each actor brought something different to the stage.”

“I like how it related to Pacific Islanders.”

“They did such a good job – because it was such an advanced script. You could see that they understood the meaning behind the words they were delivering.”

Samala Robinson, founder of SMA (Samala Robinson Academy of makeup) and creator of Samala Cosmetics, this week spoke to an interested group of students, about her story and her brands.

An ex-student of Marist College (she left in 1986), Samala’s passion is helping women from all walks of life look and feel beautiful.

It is a passion that led Samala to train as a professional makeup artist internationally from Sydney to New York.

Samala learned how to express her own creativity while making her clients feel fabulous and glamorous – ready for a fashion shoot or the red carpet.

Samala brought her expertise back to New Zealand where she became head of makeup and wardrobe at TV3 for 10 years.

Here Samala discovered a new ambition – coaching talented young makeup artists and helping them develop their own skills and confidence. From this she established the Samala

Robinson Academy of Fashion Makeup in 2000 as a school dedicated to the finest standards of professional makeup training, creativity and self-expression.

After two decades of working with models, actors and aspiring makeup artists, Samala decided to develop her own makeup range designed to let the everyday woman explore and create glamourous looks fit for any occasion.

And so Samala Cosmetics was created.

As Managing Director of Samala Cosmetics, Samala looks after the overall direction of the brand and its products – and remains driven by a love for making women look and feel amazing…

Debating the quotaA group of year 12 and 13 students have been working on their debating skills during term one. On Tuesday 12th April a team from each level came together during a balmy break 2 for a formal Marist debate. The moot: that we should double the quota, was argued well by both teams. Strong, thought provoking arguments were presented. Finally the year 13 team was able to persuade our adjudicator. Congratulations to both teams on the awesome effort and thank you very much to Mrs Adams for adjudicating.

We have nearly caught up with the backfill of data for the Fees and Absences. We thank all the staff for their efforts and time during massive changes. For all the parents, thank you for your patience this term while we continue do the testing and the release of more modules in Kamar. Early in term 2 we will have the Parent and Student Portal live. Caritas ChallengeOn the 1st and 2nd of April, students from Marist College participated in the annual Caritas Challenge. The challenge this year was to go deviceless for either 6, 12, or 24 hours. In a society that is so consumed by the use of technology, taking a break from our devices was a rewarding experience. Not often do we enjoy the natural beauty that New Zealand offers, and Caritas challenge allowed us to appreciate the art of being able to converse with someone without the median of social media. Some participants raised hundreds of dollars, while others took on the challenge despite their busy schedules. It was a memorable experience which not only benefited the children of Cambodia, but us as participants of Caritas Challenge too.

- Fleur Carvalho and Rachael VarcoeWell done to all the girls who participated in the Caritas Challenge this year, you raised $843.70 for Caritas’ work in Cambodia.

Our three most successful fundraisers: Rachael Varcoe, Rhea Bhide and Sister Seini

The Sacramental Programme will begin in week 1 of Term Two. If you are interested in receiving the Sacraments of Initiation and would like to enrol or know more about the programme please contact either Sister Seini by email on [email protected] or Mrs D’Souza on [email protected] Sacraments will be conferred on 15th August 2016 at Marist Day Mass.

Dylan Horrocks Master ClassI never knew how fascinating the world of comics was until I had the privilege of attending a riveting comics master class led by a comic genius, Dylan Horrocks, on the 2nd of April. In this three-hour class with a group of young aspiring manga and zine artists, I learnt how to create and tell stories through comics and illustration. The quirky and colourful world of comics, manga, graphic novels, and illustration is perfect for any creative mind. So if you are an aspiring story-teller or merely interested in the imaginative and visual world of fiction, I highly recommend attending classes like these in the future!

Moving ForwardPatricia Reyes spoke at the School Assembly on Wednesday 13th April 2016 about ‘Moving Forward’ and the way that she copes with Spastic Diplegia. It was a really moving account of her approach to the way she lives her life and a wonderful example of resilience.

want your friend to

broadcast a bad photo

of you, would you?

Don’t post any photos that might come

back to haunt you or your friends. You

never know who will see them.

I took a photo of my friend that I want to share...now what?

Go ahead! Share & ENjoy!

1. IS IT A GOOD PHOTO?

2. WOULD MY FRIEND AGREE?

So my friend is okay with it, but how might it affect me?

3. COULD IT GET MY FRIEND INTO TROUBLE?

5. AM I AWARE THAT ANYONE CAN SHARE IT?

6. WOULD I BE OKAY WITH MY GRANDMA SEEING IT?

7. A YEAR FROM NOW, WILL I FEEL GOOD ABOUT MAKING THIS PUBLIC ?

Be proud of the photos that you share with others! Only show people the best of the best.

Well, it's true. Anything you post online can be saved, copied, and shared with a large invisible audience.

Hold off if you’re having doubts. Your future self will thank you.

Then it’s not worth posting. Really.

If you think it will make your grandma blush, then there’s a good chance somebody else will find it inappropriate, too.
