Breakwaters, now in third generationproduction, have been installed aroundthe world often in the harshestenvironments. No single unit has everfailed and in some cases the Marinetekunit has been the only pontoon towithstand the test. In Praia da Vitoriain the Azores, after the tropical storm

Tanya had raged for two days, theMarinetek Breakwater was the onlypontoon still in place.

This kind of exceptional strength,coupled with excellent waveattenuation, is a design achievementresulting from technical researchundertaken worldwide. Tank testing,theoretical calculations and fieldtests have been the norm. Resultsare impressive – the third generation

breakwater, in production for the

past 15 years, has 30 % better waveattenuation than competitive products.

Justifiably proud of the ef fectivenessof its system, Marinetek is the onlybreakwater manufacturer in the worldto publish wave attenuation diagramswith proper research for its different

breakwater models. Breakwatersreduce the wave height and strength bydirectly deflecting some of the energyand dissipating smaller amounts byfriction and turbulence. The maintechnical parameters, i.e. width, height,weight and moment of inertia, areselected for maximum attenuationcapacity.

The connection between the pontoonunits is semi-flexible with sufficientrigidity to enable the breakwater to

work as a continuous structure.
