575 Total Points

Grades are based on the percentage of total points earned: 90 - 100% A 518 Points 80 - 89% B 460 Points 65 - 79% C 374 Points 55 - 64% D 316 Points < 54% F < 315 Points

Grades will be based on your best three Lecture Exams , Lecture Quizzes, The field trip, and the Final Exam. No make-up exams will be given. Quizzes: No make-up lecture quizzes will be given. If you come in late the day a quiz is given you will lose 2% or 2 points. If you come in after the first person in the class has finished the quiz you will not be allowed to take the quiz. You may turn in a take home quiz early but you may not turn in a take home quiz late and get full credit. You cannot turn in a quiz via email. You must be present in class to turn in a quiz. Late Homework and Take-Home Quizzes I have been having an issue with students coming to class late and students turning in late work. I have found a need to develop a policy that is consistent and fair to all my students including those who get to class on time and those who turn their work in on time. See the table below for my policy on assignments that are turned in after the beginning of the class meeting the assignment is due. On Time: Turned in at the beginning of class 100% - missed questions

Turned in 5 minutes after class starts 80% - missed questions

Turned in the day due but after class ends 70% - missed questions

Turned in next class meeting 50% - missed questions

Turned in beyond the next class meeting 0% - No credit given

Exams: Lecture Exams will consist of multiple choice, fill-in, and short answer essay questions. Essay questions will be drawn from lecture material, reading assignments from the text, and questions on the worksheets. Exams start at the beginning of class and students may not leave the room until they have turned in their exam. Once the first student has left the room no one else may start the exam. Please do not arrive late as you might not be able to take the exam.

Extra Credit: You may replace a poor quiz score or a missed quiz with an extra credit assignment. See my

website for extra credit opportunities. http://instruction2.mtsac.edu/sschmidt/

Leaving during class: It is disruptive when students wander in and out of the classroom. If you have to leave the class while it is in session leave permanently for that class period. I will not allow you to re-enter. Coming to Class Late: Walking in class late is disruptive to your fellow students. If you walk in late, sit at the side of the room near the door. Do not walk in front of people. If you walk in late it is your responsibility to find out about any assignments given at the beginning of class. If I give a quiz and you are late, you will not be allowed to take the quiz.

Cheating: You will sign a copy of the biology department cheating policy if you choose to take this class POLICY

1. No dictionaries, reference materials, notes, or programmable calculators may be used during any exam or quiz unless authorized by the professor.

2. No electronic devices, of any type, may be used during any exam or quiz unless authorized by the

professor. Electronic devices include, but are not limited to: cell phones, PDAs (personal digital assistants, earphones, cameras, MP3 players, translation devices, and electronic dictionaries.

3. No talking, signaling, sharing of note cards, calculators or other materials is allowed during any exam or

quiz, unless authorized by the professor. 4. Only the materials required or authorized for an exam or quiz should be taken out of your notebook,

backpack, pocket, or purse. All other materials should be put away as instructed, including electronic devices.

5. Students may not leave the classroom during an exam or quiz unless authorized by the professor. If a

student leaves the room without permission, the test or quiz will be forfeited at that time.

6. This policy will be strictly enforced by all professors in all classes taught in the Department. CONSEQUENCES:

7. A single act of cheating or academic dishonesty in any form may result in as much as receiving an “F” in the course.

8. Action taken by the professor will be consistent with the college policy on cheating and academic

dishonesty. In addition, a report regarding the violation will be submitted to the Director of Student Life for further action, which may also result in further disciplinary action, including, but not limited to suspension or expulsion from the college.

MARINE BIOLOGY: – INVERTEBRATE ASSIGNMENT: 25 Points

This is a take home assignment that covers the major groups of invertebrates. You will need to use your book to answer the following questions. This is not an internet assignment. The answers need to come from your textbook. Your paper must be typed and follow the sequence that appears below. Make sure you answer all the questions. You will lose points for each item that is missing. This is not a group assignment. Each student is expected to work independently on this assignment. If your paper has the same answers as another student’s both of you will be written up for cheating and given an “F” in the course.

Phylum Porifera: 1. Common name(s) of organisms that fall under this phylum. 2. Briefly describe the general body plan of organisms that are in this phylum (ex. simple or complex,

do they have true tissues, type of symmetry, live as colonies or individually etc.) 3. Where do these organisms generally live? (open ocean, attached to something, freshwater, marine,

etc.) 4. Why is this phylum the first one that we will discuss? 5. Any other facts about this group that you found interesting. If you did not find anything interesting

list some things that you think that I would find interesting. Phylum Cnidaria: 1. Common name(s) of organisms that fall under this phylum. 2. Briefly describe the general body plan of organisms that are in this phylum (ex. simple or complex,

do they have true tissues, type of symmetry, live as colonies or individually etc.) 3. State and describe the two basic body forms of cnidarians. 4. State and describe the structures that cnidarians use to capture and handle food. 5. Any other facts about this group that you found interesting. If you did not find anything interesting

list some things that you think that I would find interesting.

Phylum Ctenophora: 1. Common name(s) of organisms that fall under this phylum. 2. Briefly describe the general body plan of organisms that are in this phylum (ex. simple or complex,

do they have true tissues, type of symmetry, live as colonies or individually etc.) 3. State and describe the basic body form of ctenophores. 4. State and describe the structures that ctenophores use to capture and handle food. 5. Describe how ctenophores are similar to and different from cnidarians 6. Any other facts about this group that you found interesting. If you did not find anything interesting

list some things that you think that I would find interesting. Phylum Platyhelminthes: 1. Common name(s) of organisms that fall under this phylum. 2. Briefly describe the general body plan of organisms that are in this phylum (ex. do they have true

tissues and organs, type of symmetry, etc.) 3. Any other facts about this group that you found interesting. If you did not find anything interesting

list some things that you think that I would find interesting. Phylum Annelida: 1. Common name(s) of organisms that fall under this phylum. 2. Briefly describe the general body plan of organisms that are in this phylum (ex. segmentation, etc.) 3. State and describe the class of animals that include the marine annelids in this phylum. State how this

specific group is adapted to live in the marine environment. 4. Any other facts about this group that you found interesting. If you did not find anything interesting
