Deepening Our Faith

Today is about wisdom. Solomon and

Jesus both agree that it is important to

set our priorities to match what is most

important to God. As we gather for

worship today, let us pray for the

wisdom to learn what it is that God

wants for us, what God wants us to do,

and for the grace to live our lives

accordingly.

In a world divided by economics and

education, social status, political

opinions, race, and religion, what can I

do this week to bring people together?

Crecimiento en la Fé

Hoy todo se trata de la sabiduría. Tanto

Salomón como Jesús coinciden en que

es importante que pongamos nuestras

prioridades conforme a lo que es más

importante para Dios. Reunidos hoy

A Focus on One of Our Parishioners: Fred & Geraldine Purifoy

You might see Fred at the Sunday 8:00AM Mass, heard him speak at one of our Masses, or know that he is one of the Pastoral Council members.

What you might not know is that Fred and his wife, Geraldine Purifoy, celebrate FIFTY years of marriage on Sunday, 30, 2017.

They met when Fred was returning to the city of Los Angeles after successfully completing an eighteen-month firefighting contract in the Eniwetok, Marshall Islands, for a company named Homes and Narver. He only had fifteen days of rest before having to report to Riverton, New Jersey to sign a contract with RCA for a firefighting position in Thule, Greenland on Thule Air Force Base.

While Fred was on vacation, he visited a friend and his friend’s wife at their home. When Fred entered into his friends’ home, he immediately saw Geraldine. Right then and there he knew he was going to need her phone number. After Fred expressed his serious interest in Geraldine, his friend gave him Geraldine’s information.

The very next day, Fred called Geraldine and asked her out on a date. She said yes, and that she wanted to go to Knotts Berry Farm. Of course, he obliged. Geraldine’s five-year old niece joined their date to be their chaperone. Nonetheless, the three of them had a great time. The trip to the amusement park turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful relationship between Geraldine and Fred. Unfortunately, Fred was only able to have one more date with her before reporting to Riverton, New Jersey to sign his firefighting contract with RCA.

After reporting to RCA, Fred was sent to McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, New Jersey where he was flown to Thule Air Force Base in Thule, Greenland. On his second day at Thule Air Force Base, he decided to write Geraldine a letter. She responded, and they wrote back and forth to each other. Then one letter she wrote in May of 1967 caught his attention. She conveyed to him that, if he was only looking for a pen pal, he should look elsewhere. His reply to Geraldine was, “What size ring do you wear?” When she answered his question, he immediately went and purchased a set of rings from the Base Exchange. Geraldine and he set the wedding date for July 30, 1967, in the city of Los Angeles. After everything was set to go, he informed the captain at the fire station that June 30th would be his last day, because he would be returning to Los Angeles, California to get married.

July 30, 1967 quickly came, and Geraldine and Fred were pronounced man and wife. They were only engaged for five months, which proves that true magic between two people can also be discovered from brief engagements as well as long ones. Geraldine and Fred spent fifty wonderful years with each other and have grown even closer as the years go by. Geraldine retired as a school teacher from the Los Angeles Unified School District, and Fred retired as a lieutenant of the McDonnell Douglas Fire Department, which is now Boeing Aircraft. The union between Geraldine and Fred produced two beautiful sons of whom they are both proud. Their eldest son, Patrick, is an entertainment attorney for Warner Brothers Television, and their youngest son, Phillip, is a housing case manager for a nonprofit organization that serves homeless populations with co-occurring disorders.

Although Geraldine and Fred did everything they could to make their marriage work, Fred and Geraldine both know that it is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that give them the strength to continue and live happily ever after.

Congratulations, Fred and Geraldine, on your fiftieth golden wedding anniversary. Maria Regina Church rejoices as you celebrate God’s blessings on your marriage throughout the years. Cheers—and here’s to fifty more years!

Congratulations, and may God continue to fill your lives with more love and happiness.
