MARDEN GARDENERS

OPEN GARDENS Marden Gardeners association will be holding their open

gardens evening on July 11th. We will meet at number 6

Brook Orchard at 6.30pm and move round six or seven

gardens ending at Malcolm and Ann Simpson,

Springfield, Walkers Green. I will give a list of gardens on

the night. Pray for good weather!

Peter

This half term we have been learning about caring for animals.

Our role play area so far has been a vets, a zoo and a pet shop.

The children have engaged in a variety of stories, arts and craft

activities, maths and literacy activities that have included

animals

We had a visit from Wendy Steadman and Sandy Brooks who

came in and read a story with soft toys to explain the dangers

of animals getting caught up in rubbish. The children learnt

that they must always put rubbish in the bin. Each child was

kindly given a Morse Bag. The children had a fantastic time

and enjoyed their visit. A huge thank you to Wendy Steadman

and Sandy Brooks.

The children have also been developing their gross motor

skills by preparing for Marden Primary Academy’s sports day

and the toddlers race.

The children have been busy making cards and cookies for

Father’s Day. They made a card using different resources to

create a rocket.

This term the older children have started their transition to

school. Seventeen children have been visiting Miss Phillip’s

class on a Monday and Thursday afternoon. This has been

going really well. Since half term the children have now been

going into the school hall for lunch, which has been a great

success.

We have two fundraising events coming up soon. Firstly, the

Strawberry Fayre will be on the 2nd July and then we will have

Bingo on the 7th July. Both will be held at the Community

Centre and we look forward to seeing you all there!

Macmillan Coffee Morning Lesley Day is organising a Macmillan Coffee Morning at Marden Community Hall on Saturday 30th September 2017 between 10.00 and 12.00 noon. Everyone is invited to come along and enjoy a friendly two hours together supporting this very worthwhile organisation. Donations for a raffle, ‘bring and buy’ stall, and cake stall would be very much appreciated but ideas for other activities would also be welcome as well as offers to help, provision of cakes and biscuits for refreshments etc. Lesley can be contacted on 01432 880657, e-mail at [email protected] or at home at 87 Walkers Green , Marden. We had such a good time meeting so many new faces as well as raising money for such a good cause. Can we do it again? Yes we can. We might even do better with a little help from all you lovely people who live in Marden. Looking forward to seeing you in September.

MARDEN WI At our June meeting two of our members reported on the WI trip to the Kensington Palace exhibition “Diana: her Fashion Story” where all

the beautiful dresses were much admired. Our delegate for the NFWI Annual Meeting, Eileen Dilley, reported back on her trip to the

meeting in Liverpool. Both resolutions were passed.

Members were given details of two future events, a walk to Blackberry Hill on July 12th and the Treasure Hunt on July 20th.

Our speaker for the evening, Stella Barnes, told us of her work in Cambodia, setting up and visiting schools to help educate not just the

children but whole communities about hygiene. Her charity buys equipment like sewing machines so that they can earn money and

provides other items such as reading glasses for the local villagers. The proceeds from a special raffle as well as members’ own donations

were given to Stella for her charity.

In July we will welcome Red Watch from Hereford Fire Station who will talk about the work of the Fire and Rescue Service and fire safety

in the home.

If you are not a member please come along to any of our meetings. We shall be pleased to see you.

NB Members are reminded that there is no monthly meeting in August but there is an outing to Witley Court and Church on the afternoon

of Thursday 10th August. Further details will be given at the July meeting or contact Veronica Wright or Sandy Brook.

SB

MARDEN & SUTTON OVER 60’s Brian Skinner with his wonderful slides showed us the beautiful changing of the leaves and trees in the fall in Canada & America. White

Marden News and Views – July & August 2017

MARDEN HISTORY SOCIETY As I write this we have just returned from our July outside visit to Croome Court in Worcestershire. An interesting visit on a bright sunny

day, the only disappointment being that there were so few of us there to enjoy it. As we will soon be thinking about next year’s programme

I welcome views from members and non-members on how we should continue this element of our year. What kind of place / event should

we visit; does it have to be on a Monday or would another day be suited to more people; how should we travel etc. You can let me know by

e-mail ([email protected]) or call (my telephone number is on the back of News and Views) or tell me when I see you.

Moving forward to our July meeting we are looking forward to a visit from Wilma Hayes and Mike Watkins of In the Sticks Talks whose

talk is called “Remembering the Swinging 60’s”.

They say about the talk ... “A light-hearted look at people, things and events of the 1960’s. With audience participation encouraged it’s an

hour of laughter and fun. Remember the 60’s? Of course you do!”. But don’t think that being under 47 excludes you then it doesn’t.

Everyone, those who remember and those who wonder what all the fuss was about are welcome to join us. Non-members £2 at the door -

starting at 7.45pm on Monday July 17th in the Community Lounge.

As usual there will be no meeting of the History Society in August. Happy Holidays everyone.

CHAPEL CHAT

During recent years attenders of Marden Chapel Friendship Hour have visited many countries including Canada, Italy, Israel, the

Phillipines and Azerbajan; all, of course, courtesy of various speakers who have shared their adventures with us via slides and powerpoint

presentations accompanied by lively commentaries.

At the May meeting we walked twenty five miles through the mountains of North Wales to Bala, retracing the steps of fifteen year old

Mary Jones who trudged, barefoot, in 1800 to purchase one of the first Bibles to be printed in Welsh. Our speakers, David and Jenny Hill

from Bodenham, had completed the walk last year but admitted that it had taken them four days as opposed to Mary's one day and they

were fully equipped with walking boots and all the kit for the journey.

Afterwards we enjoyed a tea which included that Welsh speciality bara brith.

We meet at 2.15 on the last Thursday in the month, except for December and "What's On" posters are displayed outside the chapel and on

the noticeboard by the Rudge Grove bus stop. You can be assured of a warm welcome should you care to join us.

MOTHERS’’ UNION

On a blustery and not very June-like afternoon, we met in St Ethelbert’s Room to hear all about Jess Tidball’s trip along the Canal du Midi

in France last September. We heard that the Canal du Midi was inaugurated in 1681 in the reign of Louis XIV. It was designed to link Sète

on the Mediterranean with the Garonne estuary on the Atlantic coast of France via Toulouse and Bordeaux. The construction of the canal

was an amazing feat of engineering for the time with tunnels and canal bridges being built. Apparently, Carcassonne was not connected to

the Canal until 1810 because the town refused to pay the 100,000 livre demanded!

She showed some amazing photos (taken by her brother) of beautiful stretches of the canal lined with trees along the banks, bridges, locks

and a number of little churches where they stopped to pray. They cycled between 20-30 miles a day (one day 40-50 miles!). Thank you to

Jess for sharing your experiences with us.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4 July in St Ethelbert’s Room at 2.30pm for our summer tea party. Please join the branch for

refreshments and fellowship.

Herefordshire Councillor’s Report Update on Changes to Council Committees Herefordshire Council’s meeting at Full Council on Friday 19th May elected Councillor Tony Johnson as Leader of the Council, Councillor Brian Wilcox as Chairman of the Council and Councillor Philip Edwards as Vice-Chairman of the Council. The meeting at Full Council also saw the adoption of the new Herefordshire Council constitution. The constitution which acts as the council’s rule book explains and regulates how the council operates, how decisions are made and the procedures which are followed to ensure that decisions are efficient, transparent and accountable to the public. Adoption of the new constitution will see the establishment of three scrutiny committees (Adults and wellbeing scrutiny committee, Children and young people scrutiny committee, General scrutiny committee) with newly-elected Chairs and a merged Planning and regulatory committee - of which I am a member. Re: Update on the County’s Healthwatch service A new Healthwatch Herefordshire social enterprise has been established on 20th April 2017. From 2013, the contract to deliver Healthwatch Herefordshire was held by Herefordshire Voluntary Organisations Support Service (HVOSS). HVOSS took the decision not to continue providing the service when the contract expired in March 2017. As a result, the council has considered alternative solutions and has set up a new independent social enterprise to ensure the Healthwatch service continues to be delivered across Herefordshire To find out more information about Healthwatch “your consumer champion for health & social care” visit www.healthwatchherefordshire.co.uk or Tel: 01432 364 481 Email: [email protected]. Hereford City Centre Update Hereford Business group are working with Council`s Economic Development to look at ways to fill the current empty units in the city centre. The Hereford Business Awards will take place on Friday 29 September at the Three Counties Hotel. There are 16 categories aimed at highlighting how good the businesses in Hereford are and highlighting some of the young up and coming individuals in the city. A new art installation of umbrellas was put in place over 8th & 9th June. A similar project was run in Bath recently and raised the profile of the area significantly. British Land has paid for it to be installed in Hereford to raise interest in the area and the profile of the shopping centre. It will be in place until September. Please contact me with any queries you may have on the above issues on: Tel: 01432 830577 or Tel:01568 -797148 email address [email protected]

Marden News and Views – July & August 2017

The Wildside of Marden:

The Cuckoo has gone quiet and possibly gone back across the seas early so a very short stay this year. At the time of writing we are in flaming June although the beginning was not so good. Most of the baby birds are out of the nest and some have not quite got their flying skills yet and the heat is not helping. I have rescued a rook and a jackdaw and put them in a safer place nearby so the parents have picked them up and fed them and another by a friend, a swallow, who she was feeding by hand. I hope he survives, sometimes they do and sometimes they don’t. On Sunday 18th June a red kite was flying over the Walkers Green/ Woobine area, such a treat to watch. A shame that someone found a buzzard in a road and it had been shot. It is illegal to shoot these protected birds and they do no harm to our livestock and mainly eat carrion, baby rabbits, voles, moles and earth worms. Some of which we landowners find a pest but not the worms. They kill and eat anything up to 500g in weight so can occasionally take a small bird. If seen eating big rabbits or other dead animals they are scavenging, (a much easier task than catching food). Large populations of buzzards as we have around here, reflects on the large number of rodents we have and my fields are full of rabbits that destroy the land. So bring on the buzzards and help to protect them. It is important to keep putting water out for the birds especially in the dry weather. Food is not so important but I have delighted watching the baby woodpeckers sitting on the rails under the feeders while mum and dad pop up and down to feed them. The babies are not very good flyers and their Sat Navs don’t work so well and they have a tendency to fly into windows unfortunately sometimes to their end. I have not had that happen but others have. All the grasses are in full pollen and animals and humans are suffering with hay fever. Many of the hedgerow plants have gone to seed and if you chop your thistles and other unwanted plants down before they seed it stops them spreading. Look out for Himalayan Balsa along the river banks and nearby and cut it down. The saying is ‘Cut in July and they are sure to die’. Keep reporting. We have two months of observations to the next report.

Letter to the editors Update From - Marden Residents Against The Siting Of The Telecommunications Mast On Marden Village Recreation

Ground.

• Chairman Mr R Bartup has resigned with immediate effect from the Parish Council, and as informed at the P.C. meeting on 12.6.17 is

also resigning as Chairman from Marden Recreation Trust, leaving many questions unanswered.

• With the ongoing unprecedented support of over 400 signatures we are continuing to lobby Shared Access, offering them a more

suitable site for the mast, free of charge which would safeguard the future of our village. Also, with the possibility of re-opening a

historic footpath or creating a new footpath (if the mast is re-sited), we feel this would be a huge benefit for the community.

• When asked at the last P.C. meeting if the Parish Council would support us with our offer to Shared Access, we were told they would

need to take advice on whether they would be able to write a letter of support.

• We would like to thank the two Parish Councillors who were in support of our offer.

• The general feeling is that the Ward Councillor, who had no objection to the siting of the mast should in her duty, have taken more of

an interest in the concerns of the parishioners which were highlighted.

• Sutton St Nicholas Parish Council have been approached by a Telecommunications Company for a suitable site on the same basis as

the one in Marden i.e. Prior Approval. However, Sutton St Nicholas P.C. requested a ‘Call for Sites’ and are recommending a public

consultation with parishioners. We feel the same procedure should have taken place in Marden.

• We would also like to thank Mr John Davies of S&A Produce, NFU, CLA and all other associations and individuals who have kindly

helped and supported us.

• To re-iterate, we are not against the mast but against the siting of the mast on the recreation ground, with the potential health risks and

the detrimental effect it will have on the village.

Marden News and Views – July & August 2017

The New Community Facility Group

and

The Marden Village Trust Marden Fathers’ Day BBQ & Fun Afternoon

The Trust’s main objective ‘shall be for the general benefit of the inhabitants of the parish of Marden……’. This has always

meant running, on your behalf, the Community Centre. At the last meeting, the Trustees were asked by the New Community

Facilities Group of the Parish Council whether the two organisations should work closely to complement, help and support the

work of developing affordable proposals for a community centre to meet the future needs of the parish. Having thought about

the main objective of the Trust, it was unanimously agreed that the Trust should.

The first thing the Trust agreed to do was to host the Fathers’ Day BBQ and Fun Day. This was the first of a series of planned

events to raise funds towards whatever proposal for a future community centre may finally be agreed by the parish. Judging by

Sunday, they will also be fun and bring our community here in Marden together, but I am getting ahead of myself. So, on

Sunday 18th June, (yes Father’s Day) in the afternoon we had a terrific get together (it was also all part of The Great Get

Together.org) at the Community Centre. A barbeque was provided by ‘Spit & Fire’ and I have to say, what a BBQ it was too.

A burger, a bun, sausage, chicken kebab, and four types of salad, all for just £10. Drinks were generously donated by The

Volunteer Pub, bottles of water by Berrington Spring, coffee, tea and most importantly cakes were kindly donated and served

by the WI and Jess did sterling work serving ice creams all afternoon. But it gets better, because a whole lot of games had been

organised, throwing a water filled balloon to each other (Mine seemed to have a manufacturing flaw as it burst when I tried to

catch it!) an egg and spoon race (my egg took an immediate dislike to my spoon!) and a tug of war.(I supervised that from my

seat whilst having another drink), skittles organised by the Guides, and of course a raffle (no I didn’t win anything).

If you can’t remember what the weather was like that Sunday, it was hot……So a fantastic afternoon, good food, great

company and some fun games, …. What’s not to enjoy? In addition, the raffle raised £144 which has been donated to the Air

Ambulance and a further £270 was raised from the event to go towards the project.

On a serious note though, the afternoon did not happen by itself. A huge amount of work was done by the group of people who

are giving up their time to organise these events. I’m sure that on behalf of everyone there, I can say a massive ‘thank you’ for

organising such a fun event and my apologies for all those I have not mentioned who contributed to the afternoon.

But…. There is always a ‘but’ isn’t there? These events will only be great fun if they are supported. So please help your parish

by showing your support. Come along, you’ll have fun!

Letters to the editors

17

I would like to say how sorry I am that Mr. Bartup has felt the need to resign from his position as Chairman of our Parish Council. Mr. Bartup has worked on the Parish Council for many years despite having family commitments and a business to run. Few parishioners are willing to fill these voluntary positions working on our behalf, so I would like to say a big thank you to Rob for his many years of service.

Pat Whitcombe

Dear Editors,

I would like to express my thanks to Mr. Bartup

for his many years of loyal service to the Parish

Council.

It is very sad that due to pressure from some

parishioners, he has felt it necessary to resign. Not

everyone would feel able to volunteer their time

to the village and he should be applauded for all

his efforts.

He will be missed.

Christian Aid Collection – May 2017

On behalf of the West Midland Division of Christian Aid – we are deeply grateful to the generous response yet again of so

many in our village – a total of £1,280.40 from 216 envelopes was collected, with 57 enclosed leaflets sent off to claim Gift

Aid.

This year, across the world some 65 million have been forced to flee from conflict, persecution or famine with no place to

call home. Your support enables Christian Aid to work within 39 countries, bringing some measure of relief and striving for

justice and freedom.

Marking the retirement of our rector – Heather Short, a group service of her five parishes in our benefice was held in

Marden Church on May 21st. There she announced that the collection would be given to Christian Aid, this meant that the

overall total of £1,695.55 was banked! What unexpected joy!

Marden News and Views – July & August 2017 MARDEN PARISH COUNCIL

The last parish council meeting was on 12 June. Following the resignation of Rob Bartup as a councillor, there was an election for a new Chairman

of the PC. David Bennett and Mike Darley were nominated and David Bennett was elected chairman. As a result, there is now a Casual Vacancy

process for a new councillor. The Notice for this can be found on the parish website and notice boards. If 10 electors ask for an election to be held

(by the specified date of 6 July) then an election will be held before 10 September. The cost of an election is charged to the parish council and it is

important that if an election is called for, that parishioners are willing to be nominated for election. If an election is not requested, Herefordshire

Council will give consent for the parish council to co-opt a new member. In this case, people who are eligible can stand for co-option and if more

than 1 person stands, the parish council will vote for a new member. More information about being a councillor is given below.

Items considered at the meeting included: problems with how potholes are repaired and the standard of repair; issues with HGVs and cars slipping

on the Bodenham side of God Almighty Hill; and adoption of the parish council’s policies and documents.

Next Parish Council Meeting – Monday 10 July 2017 at 7:30 pm in the Community Centre – All welcome.

Parish Freighter

The freighter will be available on Saturday 8 July 11.00-1.00. Please do not leave bags or other rubbish before the freighter’s arrival – you should

not expect someone else to deal with your items.

New Community Facilities Group

Please see page 20 for more details of the next fundraising event.

There will be an update for the parish about next stages of work for the new community facility at the PC meeting in September.

How to be a Parish Councillor – and what the council does!

Marden PC has 11 seats and currently there are 10 Councillors, so the council needs one more person to join the council. Councillors represent

parishioners’ interests and are the decision makers for the community, actively encouraging involvement from parishioners.

To be able to stand as a councillor:

• you have to be a qualifying Commonwealth citizen (a UK citizen by birth or naturalisation or a Commonwealth citizen) or a citizen of

Republic of Ireland or a relevant citizen of European Union

• and aged at least 18 years old

• and on the electoral register for the parish

• or have for the preceding 12 months occupied as owner or tenant land/other premises in the parish or your principal/only place of work

has been in parish for last 12 months or you have been resident in the parish for the last 12 months or for the whole of the preceding 12

months you have lived within 3 miles of the parish.

In other words, you have to be aged 18 or over, born in the UK or have become a citizen and on the electoral register living within the parish or

very close by!

Parish councils do various things, depending on their size and facilities. Some of the things that Marden PC does are given below:

a. Hold at least 4 meetings a year, one of which is the Annual Meeting of the Parish Council – Marden PC holds 10 meetings or more a

year. All meetings must be open to the public and press

b. Set a budget and raise money from residents through the precept (as part of your Council Tax) to do the work of the council

c. Employ someone as Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to provide administration and to manage the accounts of the council

d. Provide security of the council’s property and money through an insurance policy

e. Own and maintain the war memorial, notice boards, flag poles, rubbish bins and bus shelters

f. Look after the parish roads and public rights of way, through maintenance to drains, ditches, traffic signs, verges etc, in conjunction with

Herefordshire Council and its partner Balfour Beatty, through the Lengthsman Scheme

g. Comment on planning applications on behalf of parishioners and write a Neighbourhood Development Plan so local planning policies are

used when applications are decided

h. Promote the parish by supporting the parish magazine (News & Views) and the website

i. Consider what projects and developments are needed for the benefit of parishioners and the community – currently there is the New

Community Facilities working group and a Traffic Management group

j. Make grants to parish bodies and organisations for the benefit of any part of the parish or its inhabitants – eg. Marden Guides for

activities and the Parochial Church Council for mowing of the churchyard

k. Comply with all relevant legislation – eg. employment, health and safety, Freedom of Information etc.

It’s local democracy in action – so don’t just complain about things, come and help make decisions!
