April 2011 Greetings in Christ Jesus our Lord, With snow in the forecast it is hard to believe that spring has sprung and our celebration of the resurrection is only a few weeks away. Easter this year is about as late in the season as it can be so I am looking forward to it be- ing more like spring when we celebrate. So often Easter falls early in the season and we are wrapped in our winter clothes and wind up ‘importing’ spring. Isn’t that just the point of the resurrec- tion? Just when things don’t always seem and look the best God’s resurrec- tion breaks through. Jesus’ death looked like the end to His followers. He was crucified, buried, His tomb was sealed and guarded. To all outside appearances it was the end of the story. Yet our God is not a God of “outside appearances”. God broke through not only the stone cold grave seal but God also broke through heaven and hell for Christ to rise from the dead. It’s the same for our lives. Whether we are in the spring of our life or the winter of our life God is there to turn things around for us. God reminds us that sin and death have no hold on us. Those spiritual, physical, and emotional forces that would trap us can no longer hold us down. Instead we celebrate a living Je- sus whose resurrection inspires our own renewal. I hope that you will be able to join us this year for our Resurrection Celebra- tion as well as our Holy Week remem- brances. May the risen Christ be a reminder of your own Resurrection. April 2011

Greetings in Christ Jesus ourLord,

With snow in the forecast it ishard to believe that spring has sprungand our celebration of the resurrectionis only a few weeks away. Easter thisyear is about as late in the season as itcan be so I am looking forward to it be-ing more like spring when we celebrate. So often Easter falls early in the seasonand we are wrapped in our winterclothes and wind up ‘importing’ spring.Isn’t that just the point of the resurrec-tion? Just when things don’t alwaysseem and look the best God’s resurrec-tion breaks through.

Jesus’ death looked like the end to Hisfollowers. He was crucified, buried, Histomb was sealed and guarded. To alloutside appearances it was the end ofthe story. Yet our God is not a God of“outside appearances”. God brokethrough not only the stone cold grave

seal but God also broke through heavenand hell for Christ to rise from the dead. It’s the same for our lives. Whether weare in the spring of our life or the winterof our life God is there to turn thingsaround for us. God reminds us that sinand death have no hold on us. Thosespiritual, physical, and emotional forcesthat would trap us can no longer hold usdown. Instead we celebrate a living Je-sus whose resurrection inspires our ownrenewal.

I hope that you will be able to join usthis year for our Resurrection Celebra-tion as well as our Holy Week remem-brances.

May the risen Christ be a reminder ofyour own Resurrection.

In Christ’s Service,

Pastor Bob

It is Lent and Soaking Prayer is offered inthe Sanctuary on Tuesdays from 6:30 to7:30 p.m. through Holy Week. We wouldwelcome all to come for a few minutes orthe full hour and experience soakingprayer.

Here is the 'handout' that is available dur-ing soaking prayer. It explains soakingprayer. You can simply write your prayerrequest on a piece of paper and bring itwith you. There are handouts availableduring soaking prayer. Hope to see youthere!

SOAKING PRAYER

“Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm46:10)

Welcome to Soaking Prayer. You are in-vited to get comfortable: sit or lay in apew or the carpeted area around the al-tar. Please feel free to bring a blanketand pillow or anything that helps yourcomfort level. It’s all right to fall asleep insoaking prayer as the Holy Spirit does itsdeep work within you. It is about slowingdown and letting Jesus minister to you.You need do nothing except relax, openyourself to his love and his healing grace.

Please write your first name and prayerrequest(s) on the back of this paper andkeep it with you. ALL PRAYERS AREKEPT CONFIDENTIAL. Please takeyour paper with you at the end of thetime.

If you would like prayer ministers to comequietly, read your request, and pray si-lently for you, leave this paper face up. Ifafter receiving prayer, you desire to beleft alone, and not prayed for again by aprayer minister, simply turn your paperover and continue to ‘soak’ in prayer andGod’s presence.

If you would simply like to ‘soak’ in prayerwithout someone coming to pray for yousilently, leave your paper turned overnear you. God knows your needs. Youdo not have to fill out a request.

Different prayer ministers will come byfrom time to time and pray for you. Theymay gently lay their hand on you as asign of the presence of God. Music andscripture reading will surround you. TheHoly Spirit of God will touch you. SoakingPrayer is a Psalm 23 experience: “Hemakes me to lie down in green pastures,He leads me besides still waters. He re-stores my soul.”

From the ChurchLiaison for

Love In the Name ofChrist

All Good Things Come To An EndI’ve been involved with Mid-Hudson Love Inthe Name of Christ almost from the begin-ning. At first Frances put me to work creat-ing the business cards they currently use. Ithen moved onto helping with the formsused for the many clients. As the FurnitureMinistry started to take off, I accepted thejob as Furniture Coordinator and organizedall the pick-ups/deliveries for severalmonths before my husband “nudged” me todo something else that would allow him tosee more of me rather than the people ofPoughkeepsie. My present involvement isthat of the PUMC Liaison which I have donefor about 1½ years.

When I retired from teaching in 2003, Iknew I’d find another job. Volunteering wasit and I found myself busier than ever. Aftermany years of “Volunteering” the time hascome to “Retire” once again.

Not sure what my next venture will be butone thing I can assure you. I will remainactive at PUMC and whatever venture I getinto will be more relaxing so I can feel trulyretired. Perhaps it will be my quilting andlatest hobby of watercolors.I have enjoyed my stint as your Liaison toMid-Hudson Love In the Name of Christ. Itis my hope you will support your new Liai-son and all that is asked of you for Mid-Hudson Love INC.

Look for the EASTER FLOWER TREE in Fellowship Hall. There are ornaments(made by our Sunday School children) on the tree with names of our members whoare at home (and rarely get out) or are in a nursing home.

All you need to do is:1. Look for a name of the shut-in on the back of the ornament.2. Remove the ornament from the tree, then3. On Easter Sunday after the 10:45 Worship Service or on Monday, pick up an

Easter Flower and deliver it to the person named on the ornament.

Let’s make a special effort this Easter to remember those who were at one time veryactive among us in this church. We can show our appreciation to them by takingsome time out of our day to visit with them. May God bless you this Easter.

From the Bishop

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ ourSavior and Redeemer, the Prince of shalom,Healer of our brokenness, and Hope of theworld!

The earthquake and tsunami in Japan thatoccurred a few days ago was of historic pro-portion and has resulted in the death ofthousands of persons with thousands moremissing. The numbers are sure to rise. Un-known as yet is the full impact that this ca-lamity will have on the amount of radiationemitted into the atmosphere from nuclearpower plants. Truly, our hearts are heavywith sorrow and grief. Accordingly, I callupon all New York Conference United Meth-odists to pray fervently for the people of Ja-pan, for those most directly affected, and forthose who are part of the efforts to bring re-lief to this suffering country.

I am heartened to know that our UnitedMethodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)has been in touch from the earliest hourswith our mission partner churches andchurch-related agencies in Japan. Most all ofour work there is done in conjunction withecumenical partners including the UnitedChurch of Christ in Japan, the Korean Chris-tian Church in Japan and the National Chris-tian Council in Japan. While the new WesleyCenter in Tokyo, related to the United Meth-odist Women, was not damaged and is serv-ing as a homeless shelter, the Asian RuralInstitute, north of Tokyo, where we train per-

sons from Asia and Africa in sustainable ag-riculture, sustained considerable damage. We can be sure that whatever we will even-tually do will bear the love of Jesus Christ intangible expressions and that we will bethere as long as we are needed.

It is my fervent desire that our churches re-ceive an offering for UMCOR and its work inJapan. You may send your checks to RossWilliams, Treasurer, New York United Meth-odist Center, 20 Soundview Ave., WhitePlains, NY 10606. Make checks payable tothe "New York Annual Conference" and notefor "Pacific Emergency, Advance #3021317."One hundred per cent of all monies receivedwill go to this effort.

Having just returned from a week in Haiti, Ican testify once again first hand as to thehealing and hope that our gifts make whenchanneled through UMCOR. UMCOR is, in-deed, United Methodism at its very best.I pray for all a continued blessed and holyseason of Lent.

In Christ,Jeremiah J. Park

Let us join Bishop Park in prayer and actionin response to the devastation in Japan.Poughkeepsie UMC will receive donationsnow through April 17. Please make checkspayable to Poughkeepsie UMC and note‘Japan” in the memo line. Those donatingcash should do the same on their envelope..

Good Friday ServiceApril 22, 2011

Welcome to Narnia, where fora hundred years it has beenwinter, but never Christmas. Now Aslan is on the move,

and his presence will set things right.

C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Chronicles ofNarnia, created stories within stories. Hepresented great spiritual truths through hischaracters and their circumstances whichcan help us to know the character of Godbetter. His first book, The Lion, The Witchand the Wardrobe brings to us the story ofthe Gospel and the story of salvation.

This year on Good Friday, we want to of-fer a meaningful opportunity for families toembrace what Jesus has done for usthrough the giving of his life. Rather thangathering for a service in the sanctuary,we will be gathering to share a meal in theFellowship Hall, beginning at 6 pm. Detailsabout the food will be announced later. From 7-8 pm we will be visiting Narnia viavideo clips and sharing in small groupround table discussions to capture thespiritual parallels to Jesus’ life and death, and share their meaning in our lives.

This program is appropriate for schoolaged children through mature age groups.Narnia, the movie, is rated PG for battlesequences and frightening moments. Par-ents should certainly use discretion re-garding their children. We will be offeringbabysitting for the very young in the nurs-ery, and an alternate program/activity timefor young children will be prepared byMarcy Conners. Children preferring thealternate program may eat with their fami-lies and will then be dismissed about 7 pminto Marcy’s care.

Since time prevents us from viewing theentire Narnia video during our Good Fri-day program, we want to encourage folksto watch the video or read The Lion, TheWitch and The Wardrobe before that eve-ning. Having knowledge of the whole storywill deepen and enrich our experience to-gether. Whether you can do this prepara-tion or not, please come join us for the fel-lowship and the time of remembering whatJesus has done for us.

Watch for more information in the bulletin!

Youth News

April 2011

I would like to thank Pastor Bob and theSPR committee for the opportunity toserve as the new Youth Director. AlthoughI have been around the youth for awhile, Iam very excited about taking on this newrole. I truly feel blessed to be part of thisyouth ministry with great youth, involvedparents, caring congregation, dedicatedyouth leaders, and a supportive Pastor.Thank you - John Marrine

The first weekend in March, the PUMCYouth Group joined four other churches fora retreat at the Taconic Conference Cen-ter. The retreat was from Friday throughSunday and was filled with games, semi-nars, fellowship and powerful spiritualmessages from our worship leader, JustinKendrick and the Out of Hiding band fromthe Holyfire Ministries, that truly touchedus all. We were very proud of Tom Foywho gave an inspirational testimony at theSaturday evening worship. The Holy Spiritwas definitely among us. I'd like to thankall the youth leaders and parents for theirsupport, and I would like to give a specialthanks to Patty Little for her exceptionalorganization of this weekend.

The youth sponsored a Shrove PancakeDinner that was very successful to supportthe Mexico mission trip. The generosity ofall who attended is appreciated. It was agreat meal and a wonderful time to fellow-ship. Thanks to all who supported thisevent either financially and/or with the giv-ing of their time to volunteer. Special rec-

ognition to Debbie Foy for coordinating thisevent.

We are diligently preparing for the May 22Youth Service and we're very excited howthis worship experience is evolving.Through this event, we all gain a greaterappreciation of what it takes to prepare fora worship service through the message, scripture, prayers, dance and songs.

Please continue to pray for our three sum-mer mission trips: M-FUGE (June 27 - July2) - 28 team members will be traveling toPhiladelphia to perform inner-city missionwork; Mexico (July 29 - August 6) - 14team members will be traveling to En-senada, Mexico to provide a VBS pro-gram; Bridge Builders (August 1 - 5) - ateam is in the process of being assembledto join other local churches to perform mis-sion work in and around Poughkeepsie.

Hi Everybody, It’s Timothy,

April is a funny month! It is kind of an inbetween month. Not still winter but notyet spring. I have been playing outside inthe yard and was driven back inside bythe cold. The other day I asked my dad ifwe could light a fire in the fireplace onlyto realize it is over 50 degrees outside.April is just strange. You never knowwhat you are going to get.

But that is a lot like life. Has that everhappened to you? You think thingsshould be one way and then they’re not.Pastor Bob agreed with me about that.

But he also reminded me that God al-ways is the same. We can always counton God caring for us and loving us. Godalways is with us, even when things arenot like we think they should be.

Pastor Bob said that this is what Easteris about. It is a reminder that God is big-ger than anything that can come ourway—even death.

I am sure glad this is true. It means thateven if things aren’t going the way I ex-pect they should God is still there. Evenwhen things are all wrong God is there. And I hope you remember what is mostimportant….

God loves you and so do I!LoveTimothy
