Human beings have a desire for self-improvement. The truepath to this was debated first by the ancient philosophers, and now by the authors of the self-help books that beg forspace on our Kindles and I-Pads. But what is the best way?Is there a diet that will help us live better? Do we get to en-lightenment through resistance, surrender or sublimation?Should we work to reject, accept, or to transform? Every theory, philosophy and theosophycomes with the path to align yourself with its truth, a 10-step program, always an internalprocess - an inner journey that will bring you to your optimum self.

And then there's Judaism, with its laws for life and with practices that span over three mil-lennia. In contrast to most of the latest theories of how to make yourself the person you’vealways wanted to be, Judaism argues that philosophy and spiritual journeys must ultimatelymanifest themselves through actions—through how we live in the world. Passover repre-sents the freeing of the soul from the things that clog it up and obstruct its brightness. Andthough that is primarily a spiritual challenge, the path to doing so is more likely to happenwhen we engage in real work and in physical activity, than it will simply by contemplatingthat truth.

How does this replace the spiritual journey? It doesn't. It takes the spiritual journey out ofheaven, and makes it real by bringing it down to this world. We all complain about thework. Lots of us look to find other places to spend the eight days of the Festival. But the re-demptive part of the preparation is that it is intensely physical—and the real world schmutzthat we get rid of has the potential to transform our souls—and be ready for the journey thatbegins as the First Seder arrives. That’s how we chase the hametz from our hearts.

We who are born in freedom do not experience liberation simply by showing up: We needto prepare! That’s why we want to invite you to come to Beth Sholom Congregation onMonday morning, March 25 to take part in the Siyyum Ha’Bikhorot and the burning of thehametz that will follow. When we watch the flames devouring our hametz, we see the de-vouring of the hametz in our souls. When we recite the kol hamira, the prayer in which wedisavow all hametz, it isn't an empty prayer. It will have been earned by weeks of sweat, and so been made part of us. That’s how we will know that it is real. And that, truly, is thebeginning of spiritual transformation.

How do you experience the passage of time? Each of us feels the

movement of time in different ways at various points in our lives.

When one is in the midst of a joyful event, time can seem to race

by. When one enjoys a meal with family or friends, a great day at

work, a vacation, or I would add a spiritual encounter with Gd and

holiness, time often seems fleeting. Conversely, when one is suf-

fering through physical or mental illness, or awaiting important

news, one can proverbially sense and hear each slow second tick

by. The passing of time as constructed in our society is often about

how we feel and understand the meaning and value of the time that

has passed.

Our task as religious people is to bring order and meaning to the

vastness of eternal time by marking days and seasons with special

qualities. In the Biblical story of creation each Yom, each day, is

remembered for what was brought into the world on that day. In Ju-

daism each season is special and each day is special. Some days in

history take on significance for us not only as individuals but also

as a People.

The spring season is punctuated by Passover. In the twentieth cen-

tury, The Jewish People added 4 important and special days in

spring that add meaning to this season. Though these holidays are

relatively new in the life of The Jewish People, each one is crucial

to who we are as Jews, and to how we live our lives and experience

the seasons. Passover is not only the holiday in Spring. It is also

the time when we honor four special days: Yom HaShoah, Yom

HaZikaron, Yom HaAtzma’ut and Yom Yerushalayim.

Less than one week after Passover, we commemorate Yom

HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day. The (האושה םוי)

formal name is Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG'vurah ןורכיזה םוי)

Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day,") On" ;הרובגלו האושל

this day we remember the Six Million Jews who were murdered at

the hands of the Nazis. In 1953, Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-

Gurion and President Yizhak Ben-Zvi added 27 Nisan to the Jewish

calendar. Our local community commemorates this day with a

community-wide service held in Center City on the Sunday closest

to the actual day on the Hebrew calendar and with a religious

service and program at a local synagogue. As the generation of

Survivors passes, it becomes increasingly important for each one

of us, even incumbent upon us, to attend services to remember this

terrible time in our history.

One week later is Yom HaZikaron, Israeli Memorial Day. On this

day we remember all those who have fallen in defense of The State

of Israel. Observance of this day began in 1963. In recent years we

also remember those who have fallen in Israel at the hands of

terrorism. Because the country of Israel is so small, virtually every

family is affected on this somber

day. For 24 hours, places of public

entertainment are closed. Two

sirens are sounded throughout the

country, during which the entire

nation observes two-minutes of

"standstill" of all traffic and daily activities. The first siren marks

the beginning of Memorial Day at 8:00 P.M. and the second is heard

at 11:00 A.M. There are public prayers in all military cemeteries.

Most of the broadcasting time is devoted to Israeli songs that

convey the mood of the day. Even when we are not in Israel, it is

important for our connection to our State of Israel to commemorate

this important day here with memorials.

As the day comes to a close, the mood turns to happiness, as we

transition into Israel Independence Day, Yom HaAtzma’ut. These

days are next to each other to teach us that it is our fallen soldiers

who have given us our State. On May 15, 1948, David Ben -Gurion

called a vote in Tel Aviv to establish the future State of Israel. Sixty-

five years later, we continue to be joyful at the existence of our

State, while appreciating the complexities of running a secure,

peaceful and productive state. We are proud of Israel’s democracy

and look forward and pray for her secure and creative future. Come

to shul on the 5th of Iyar and sing Hallel with us as we celebrate

The State of Israel. Or better yet, go and celebrate in Tel Aviv this

year!

As a result of The Six Days War in June of 1967, Israel was able to

reunite the City of Jerusalem. On May 12, 1968, the government

proclaimed a new holiday—Jerusalem Day—to be celebrated on

the 28th of Iyar, the date on which the divided city of Jerusalem

became one. On March 23, 1998, the Knesset passed the Jerusalem

Day Law, making the day a national holiday. We pray for a United

and Peaceful Jerusalem.

As your spring calendar gets crowded with events, remember to

take time to commemorate these four important days in Modern

Jewish history. These days, along with Passover, define the spring

for The Jewish People. The first two Days are filled with sadness

as we remember those who perished in the Shoah and those who

perished in defense of our land. The second two Days remind us

of the enduring spirit of our People and how fortunate we are to live

in a time with a strong State of Israel. All four days remind us of

the verse in Psalms, “at night we may weep, but joy comes in the

morning.” (Ps 30:5)

As I sit at my computer on this January day, in my cablestitch sweater with the shawl collar, I shiver at thethought that the temperature will remain below freezingfor the next ten days. At such times, the only sensiblething to do is to sit down and read an intriguing novel.Let me recommend to you the books of #1 New YorkTimes bestselling author, Daniel Silva. We are extremelyfortunate that our major fundraiser for the year will bring Mr. Silva to Beth Sholom to speak about hisnovels and his views on Israel on Sunday, May 5 at 7pm.

The majority of Mr. Silva’s books chronicle the missions of his favorite protagonist, the globe-trottingMossad agent and ace art restorer Gabriel Allon. Through the adventures of Gabriel Allon, Mr. Silva isable to explore issues of great importance to the Jewish community, such as the Holocaust, Al-Qaedaand international terrorism, the Arab Spring and the Arab-Israeli conflict.

While there have been other authors offering thrillers about Jewish topics, Mr. Silva’s plot lines have foreshadowed actual events. Forexample, in The Rembrandt Affair, we learn that the Iranians lie to the world and work to develop nuclear weapons, while Israel, Britain, and the United States combine forces—all behind the scenes and far below any official radar—to carry out a daring operation to sabotageIran’s nuclear program. Just weeks after Silva released this novel, the first leaks began to emerge about the Stuxnet virus, which at leasttemporarily crippled Iran’s push for a bomb. So, when Mr. Silva—himself a convert to Judaism—writes a novel about unrest in the HolyLand, as he has done in The Fallen Angel, it is worth taking note. In an interview by Michael Rosen of Tablet Magazine, Mr. Silva ob-served, “As the entire region becomes more Islamic, it’s only natural that the conflict is going to become more overtly religious than italready is. If that is the case, then Jerusalem, this symbol of the navel of the world, this place that all the three Abrahamic faiths holdsacred, is going to be a flashpoint for the future.”

Our evening with Mr. Silva promises to be thoroughly fascinating and thought provoking-- a truly memorable event. This will be Mr.Silva’s only appearance in the Philadelphia area, and we are counting on you to help fill the entire Main Sanctuary. However, the achieve-ment of our fundraising goals depends on your support as Patron Sponsors. We are hoping that all of you who are able, will generouslybecome Patron Sponsors. For your contribution of at least $1,500, you will receive an invitation to the Pre-event dinner reception onApril 28 at the home of Michael and Kristin Karp, as well as other incentives. Additional information concerning Patron Sponsors is inthis edition of Connections or you can call the Beth Sholom Office at 215-887-1342. It is your love of Beth Sholom and your investmentin our synagogue which enables us to look forward to a strong future.

I hope you will excuse me while I return to the latest adventures of Gabriel Allon in the Daniel Silva novel that I am reading.

Modern educational philosophy teaches us that childrenand adults learn in a variety of ways. In the traditionalPassover Haggadah, we are reminded of the Midrash of theFour Children. These four children are spoken about as onewho is wise and one who is wicked; one who is simple andone who does not know how to ask.

In more modern haggadot, there are depictions of these Four Chil-dren and different explanations of what they represent. In A Differ-ent Night by Noam Zion, the Four Children are referred to as aBlessing of Diversity. Artist David Moss teaches that “Every childis unique and the Torah embraces them all. (It is) based on playingcards. As in a game of chance, we have no control over the childrendealt us. It is our task as parents, as educators, to play our handbased on the attributes of the children we are given. It is the child, not the parent, who must direct the process.” (David Moss, A DayApart p. 64)

At Beth Sholom Religious School, we strive to move toward a placewhere we celebrate diversity so that we may unlock the potentialof each student. We work to remove obstructions to learning andbreak away from labeling children with the stereotypes mentionedin the Haggadah. We provide support to all students so that eachmay succeed. This kind of support happens in many different waysand our faculty use many resources to support our students.

We are fortunate to have a strong support structure in our schoolthat helps us. In addition to our talented staff that fosters the Jewish

identities of each child, our schoolis honored to have the assistanceof four trained volunteer teenswho come into our classrooms ona weekly basis to provide support. Our teens this year are Sarah Lefkowitz (12th grade), Emmy Cohen(11th grade), Julie Cohen (11th grade) and Bennett Decker (9thgrade).

We are especially proud of the support that our students receivefrom our teen volunteers. On any given day you will find a teenworking one on one with a student practicing Hebrew decoding, doing research on the computer with another, helping in the class-room during a project, and working with students in small groupsto practice Prayer goals. Our students love their contact with theteens and learn a lot from them. Our teens will tell you that theirexperience in our school is as enriching for them as the help thatthey give. We are certainly proud of all of our students and the hardwork that they do, and we are appreciative for the time and expertiseof our teen volunteers.

Wow, I have a real Ketubah. I neverthought this would happen. I hadn’treceived a GET (Jewish Divorce)from my previous marriage, and Eliand I were married by civil law. AsI sat at the Shabbat ExperienceCommittee meeting planning theupcoming Life Cycle event, some-thing happened. The planned mockwedding was suddenly turning intoa real one - mine. Recently I ob-tained a GET and this made it possi-ble for us to be married in thesynagogue.

With only a month left before the January 12 date, there was a lot of work to be done. The ShabbatExperience Committee went to work planningand preparing to get ready for the big event. Thewhole community participated. There were dona-tions of food, cake, flowers, music, decorations, photography, and even hair design. Scripts had tobe written and rehearsed. Many people put in alot of time and effort to orchestrate this event.

The night of the wedding arrived and there wasdefinitely magic in the air. You could feel the ex-citement in the room. All the beautiful rituals ofthe traditional Jewish wedding were taking place, some that I had never experienced before. TheKabbalat Panim and the Tisch had all the guests

travelling around the room to absorb it all. Finallyeveryone gathered together to perform Havdallahfollowed by the bedeken ceremony and the Ke-tubah signing. All of the formally dressed chil-dren were singing and participating as if they hadbeen to many weddings, when in reality this wasthe first for many of them. There were big smileson their faces and a look of anticipation in theireyes as the traditional wedding ceremony wasabout to take place followed by a festive celebra-tion.

True to Jewish form, there was delicious food anda lot of dancing including the always slightly ter-rifying moment of lifting the bride and groom onchairs. Thankfully, there were some strong par-ticipants and we did survive. Everyone was hav-ing a wonderful time.

This was truly a wonderful synagogue commu-nity event planned and executed perfectly by allthe volunteers, and it was a beautiful weddingwhich I was privileged to be the recipient. I wantto thank everybody that participated and con-tributed to this occasion. I will always rememberthis special night which sanctified my marriagein the eyes of Jewish people.

There have been several studies concerning the most impor-

tant qualities of a Preschool Teacher. Recently, a lot of em-

phasis has been put on the amount of courses taken in the

field of early childhood. However, I was not surprised to

read a recent poll that ranked “Nurturing Personality” and

“Love of Children” first and second above third place

“BA/BS in Early Childhood. It is the teacher who holds the

key to creating a successful experience for every child. At

Beth Sholom we are fortunate to have a wonderful staff with

these important qualities.

We are excited to announce that beginning in February we

have our new Stay and Play for children 12-24 months and

their parents. This is a one-hour, developmentally appropri-

ate thematic program that will provide an enriching experi-

ence while offering the opportunity for the children and

adults to interact with each other. Everyone is invited to try

it out. The first session is free! Call Eileen for more infor-

mation and to register.

On Saturday, March 2, 5-7pm we will host our annual Pre-

school Family Havdalah pajama party. All children are in-

vited to come in their PJ’s for a delicious “breakfast for

dinner” and fun entertainment. This year every Beth Sholom

Preschool family is encouraged to BRING A FRIEND!

Every family may bring a guest family.

March begins registration season. It is time to register for

summer camp and for Fall 2013. Our Infant class is already

filling up. And, Beth Sholom is very unique in not only of-

fering an exceptional traditional program but also having one

of only 39 Jewish Montessori Preschools in the country. Per-

sonal tours can be arranged by calling our school office.

Sisterhood’s winter was busy with programs and luncheons and Book Club ses-sions. In December, we heard Yiddish music from the Freedmans, Molly and Bob.Then, in January we were especially gratified when Rabbi Merow again led us ina Tu B’Shevat Seder. What a delight! In February, we had our major event, Sis-terhood Shabbat. The service, completely conducted by the women of Sisterhood, was inspiring. An occasion for the study of Torah, the women devoted hours oflearning to present a special Shabbat. It was followed by a delicious lunch and aninformative presentation by Dr. Marsha Edelman, “Kol Isha: Women in JewishMusic.”

Spring is on the horizon and with it a new round of activities. Our March programwill feature Diane Steinbrink who will present a discussion about Wendy Wasser-stein, the pre-eminent Jewish playwright, “Wendy Wasserstein and the World ofher Women (and Men).” We will then pause to scrub our kitchens for Passover andthen relax with relief in late April when we will be entertained by the Israeli Chorusand their wonderful music. Our Donor Dinner in May will be very special whenHazzan Tilman will bring us “Hazzanim Sing Broadway.” During these months wewill again have meetings of our Book Club and a trip to Broadway planned. All ofthese upcoming events are very special; two of them, the April and May programs, will be in the evening so that our working women will be able to enjoy them. Allare welcome. Come, bring a friend, and enjoy!

Ask policy experts Stuart Butler, Ph.D. (left) and David B. Nash, M.D., M.B.A. (right)about the appropriate role of the federal government in healthcare and you’ll get twovery different answers. Yet both have agreed to discuss this critical issue civilly at the in-augural forum of the Bernard Wolfman Civil Discourse Project at Beth Sholom Congre-gation, here on March 28, 7:30pm. Chris Satullo, vice president for news & civicdialogue at WHYY and co-founder/co-director of the Penn Project for Civic Engage-ment, will moderate.

“As Jews, we’ve inherited a legacy of learning and social activism,” explains BethSholom member Dina Wolfman Baker, who founded the Project to memorialize her father, Bernard Wolfman. “My father exemplified that tradition. This is my way of shar-ing his legacy.”

In her Rosh Hashanah sermon, Rabbi Merow said, “Judaism believes strongly in a mul-tiplicity of truths…we can disagree without being disagreeable.” The Project creates aplace to discuss vital issues while modeling and valuing civil disagreement. It providesopportunities for people on all sides of an issue to learn from each other and take mean-ingful action. It draws upon our traditions of Tzedakah, Talmudic debate, and prohibi-tion of Lashon Hara (evil tongue).

The forum will take place each year during Pesach, to symbolize its celebration of free-dom of (respectful) speech and political activism.

Join the conversation on Twitter (@civildiscourse1) and on Facebook at The BernardWolfman Civil Discourse Project. The free forum is open to the public and requires pre-registration at www.CivilDiscourseProject.org. If you cannot register online, call thesynagogue office at 215.887.1342. THE RABBI’S HUSBAND BY BRENDA BARRIE

Rabbi Tovah Feldner and her husband, Dan Goldin, love each other, but Dan is planningto leave his wife and two small children. He feels he must set out on a search to solve thephysical problem of their three-year-old daughter Leah, born prematurely, and with Cere-bral Palsy. Leah’s birth had delayed Tovah’s beginning her first job after Seminary - herjob, the best-regarded position offered to her class, is wrong for her, but Tovah has neverbeen able to admit that. Tovah wakes up one cold December morning, to discover Dan isgone. How can she discover what is really happening in her life? And, if she accom-plishes that, can she forgive her husband and work with him to heal the wounds inflictedon their marriage by Dan’s inability to communicate and her own lack of knowledgeabout her true motivations and her spiritual needs within the rabbinate? Harold Paul was born in Philadelphiaand lived above the store that housedthe Paul family business with his par-ents, Esther and Samuel, both ofblessed memory, and two sisters,Evelyn and Nataline. They sold drap-

ery fabric and made custom draperies on the premises. The familyattended a synagogue at 4th and Lombard Streets for the High HolyDays. After graduating from high school in South Philadelphia,Harold went into the family business.

His family also had a home in Atlantic City and in the summer itwas filled with many friends. On one of these occasions, a girl withred hair appeared and Harold was attracted to her good looks com-bined with her hair color. But, there was a problem – she was datinghis best friend! Harold was undeterred. He knew that she used thesame dentist in Logan and the dentist would call Harold to let himknow when she had an appointment. Then, Harold would make sureto be there at the same time and afterward would ask her to join himfor an ice cream sundae at a nearby Hot Shoppe. Sylvia did attendher Senior Prom with Harold’s best friend, but by graduation, shewas dating Harold.

When Harold was taken home to meet Sylvia’s family, the Millers(Sylvia’s parents, four brothers and their wives) readily acceptedhim and before long they were engaged. They had a beautiful en-gagement party, complete with music and dancing. Harold andSylvia were married on February 29, 1948. Harold says he can stillremember seeing his beautiful bride coming down the stairs of theCrystal Ballroom of the Ben Franklin Hotel. This year they will cel-ebrate their 65th wedding anniversary! They have two sons,Stephen and Warren (z”l) and eight grandchildren. They still ownand operate their family business in Philadelphia and work togetherevery day.

Upon the death of his beloved mother, Esther Paul, on August 29,1969, Harold began coming to Beth Sholom twice daily to say Kad-dish. This led to him becoming a Minyanaire. He says that this cre-ated a new lifestyle for him and Sylvia. They began coming to shulwith their sons for Friday night services. Then, when they hadgrandchildren, they brought them on Friday nights.

Harold has been a loyal, dependable and devoted Chairman of theMorning Minyan for 34 years. He oversees the Minyan breakfasts, ordering the food and instructing our Housekeeping Department onthe schedule and preparation of these meals. Beth Sholom is mostgrateful for his role in this important prayer group and helping peo-ple fulfill this mitzvah.

Harold says he is most appreciative of this honor. He wishes every-one good health and lives filled with the happiness he and Sylviahave known at Beth Sholom.

Please join us on Friday, April 5 at 8pm as we honor Harold, ourdeserving Congregant of the Year.
