Administrator’s Perspective

Fr. John R. Rushofsky [email protected] Pastor 412-364-8999 x8112

Finance Questions A month ago, when I spoke at most of the Masses and Deacon Rick

Cessar spoke at the ones I couldn’t get to, we talked very openly about parish finances, which are loosely tied to diocesan finances. I was not surprised when some people afterward asked me questions about some of the connections of these financial matters that are unclear. Well, here’s our chance to find out more.

You are invited to take part in an evening of prayer, information, and discussion with Bishop David Zubik and members of his senior staff designed to help you better understand the role of finances in daily parish operations. Topics will include Parish Share, School Subsidy, Insurance and Billing, Sample Financial Statements, and Real Estate Transactions. Sessions will be held at churches (including one at our own Saint Athanasius) representing each of the regions in our diocese:

Monday, March 16—Saint Athanasius, West View (Region I)

Wednesday, March 18— Saint Valentine, Bethel Park (Region II)

Monday, March 23—Saint Margaret Mary, Moon Township (Region III)

Thursday, March 26—Saint Michael the Archangel, Butler (Region IV)

Each session will be held from 7:00-8:30 pm. You are welcome to attend the session that is most convenient for your schedule.

In an era of increased transparency, we welcome any opportunity to learn more about “where the money goes.”

In Other News: Here’s lunchtime at one of our Men’s retreats at St. Paul Retreat House on the South Side. We have another Men’s retreat and a couple Women’s retreats in our grouping. It’s a great way to spend a weekend. Give it a try!....stay tuned for more news….

Something to think about: “By itself, faith accomplishes nothing, for even the devils believe and shudder. No, faith must be joined to an active love of God, which is expressed in good works.” - St. Maximus, abbot

Parishioners are encouraged to participate in a Parish Assembly to learn more about the merger process. Each Assembly will be approximately one hour, with a presentation followed by questions. You can attend the session that fits your schedule.

Saturday, March 7: Saint Athanasius–Athanasian Hall after the 4:00 pm Mass

Sunday, March 8: Incarnation of the Lord-church hall after the 8:30 am Mass

Saturday, March 14: Saint Sebastian–school cafeteria after the 5:00 pm Mass

Sunday, March 15: Saint Teresa-Schoppol Hall after the 11:00 am Mass

Merge FAQ What is the purpose of the parish assemblies?

The parish assemblies are just one in a series of steps dating back to 2015 that has been leading up to a petition to the diocesan bishop requesting that our four parishes merge into a single parish. The entire process has required that parishioners be kept informed and that they be provided the opportunity to submit their questions. The assemblies are part of that ongoing effort.

What will happen at the parish assemblies?

The assemblies will offer a presentation that addresses some basic questions regarding the final steps leading to the request for merger:

What is happening?

Why is it happening?

How will it happen?

What’s next?

There will be a period for questions and answers following the presentations. Parishioners can also submit questions in writing which will be addressed in future bulletins.

How will I learn about what was said if I am unable attend one of the four opportunities?

Obviously, the hope is that as many parishioners as possible will participate in the assemblies. Hearing information first-hand is the best way to ensure

understanding. Further, the assembly witnesses to our solidarity. When parishioners gather together for this important step in the process, our unity is expressed. That said, a summary of the presentation will be provided in the bulletin of March 29. It will also be available on the website and in Flocknote.

Will parishioners be consulted on the final options for a new parish name?

In January, Father Rushofsky submitted 14 possible names for consideration. The bishop returned 13 of those options for further consultation. However, six of those options are also being considered by the other 15 groupings that are looking to merge in July of 2020. Therefore, the consultation will focus on these seven options:

Christ our Hope Parish (Ascension)

Christ the Radiant Dawn Parish (December 21)

Jesus the Lamb of God Parish (Good Friday)

Our Lady of Light Parish (December 1)

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish (July 16)

Saint Martin de Porres Parish (November 3)

Saint Paul VI Parish (May 29)

The consultation will take place between March 16 and March 25, 2020 after the assemblies have been held. The form to submit your feedback will be available online, through Flocknote and in the narthexes of the churches.

Lent 2020 Serve Together Our parishes are collecting funds during Lent for The Center for Social Works in Chimbote, Peru and Anna Seethaler Hospital in Oaxaca, Mexico. 5-gallon jugs are available at all four church buildings and at the faith formation sites to receive donations. All donated funds will be divided between the two missions. In November 1998, Fr. Scott Seethaler, OFM Cap visited some friends who were working with the poor in Oa-xaca de Juárez, Mexico, 320 miles southeast of Mexico City. Oaxaca is the third poorest state in the country, with a large indigenous population. During his visit, it became apparent that there was a need for quality healthcare for the poor. A nonprofit clinic was opened January 1, 2000. The clinic continued to expand until it is now a full-service hospital named after Fr. Scott’s mother, Anna Seethaler. It is the only hospital/clinic in Oaxaca that supplies a place for the families of the patients to stay while they are being treated. Some of the patients travel six hours to the hospital. The hospital/clinic serves about 1,500 patients a month. Some are so poor that they are unable to pay for their treatment. It is only through the generosity of donors that the Anna Seethaler Hospital can offer hope and healing to many poor people.

Lenten Reflection by Kathy Wenzig, Incarnation Parish

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a certain village, where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying. But Martha was distracted by her many tasks; so she came to him and asked, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her then to help me.’ But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her.’” Luke 10: 38-42

Reflect: In this reading, both women made a choice. Both women were called by God during Jesus’ visit. Martha heard a call to take care of Jesus by providing a comfortable place for him, Mary heard a call to listen and learn. My research suggests that Martha’s home may have been a sort of hospice or shelter for the sick, the homeless, the lonely and the elderly. She offered people a place to stay and be cared for; this was her calling. I, too, am a Martha. If Jesus came into my home and stayed, I know I would do exactly the same thing as Martha. In doing so, perhaps I “missed the boat” to sit and listen to Jesus’ words as

Mary did. I have been called to share my gifts and talents in the field of hospitality. I have been a cook for many years, twenty-two of them serving the elderly in the Meals on Wheels program. It has always given me great joy to prepare food and give nourishment to others; it is my call. I feel food brings people together, maybe that is why Jesus chose to gather the disciples around a table at the last supper!

Act: It is my hope to live out my call this Lenten season by continuing to share my talents in preparing food for a family in need, in helping to prepare meals at a local shelter and in donating to a food bank. At the same time, I want to be more like Mary and get to know Jesus on a more personal level, spending more time in prayer and reading His words. Sometimes we are called out of our “comfort zone.” Preparing this Lenten reflection was out of my comfort zone, but I answered the call and did it. Sometimes being called to serve one another can be uncomfortable. This Lent don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.

Pray: Saints Martha and Mary, teach me to offer the simple gifts of kindness and hospitality to others as you each did in your own way to Jesus. Let me be open to God’s call and His word in my life. Bless all those who may come to my door this Lent. Amen.

GATHER HYMNAL DEDICATIONS AND MEMORIALS

The Gather hymnals at St. Teresa of Avila Church are now full. We can no longer accept hymnal dedications at St. Teresa of Avila, but you may continue to place dedications or memorials at St. Athanasius, Incarnation of the Lord, or St. Sebastian Churches. Forms are still available in all four church narthexes and rectory offices. The next time you stop in at any of the rectory offices, ask one of the secretaries for a Gather hymnal form and they will be more than happy to assist you. Thank you for supporting our Neighbors North Music Ministry while helping to fill all four of our churches.

MUSIC MINISTRY SCHEDULE

Thanks for your patience, and please help us welcome our substitute organists, Kevin, Dianne, and Robin, who will be helping us out until the end of March.

SECOND SUNDAY OF LENT

Be a blessing. If last week’s readings centered on temptation, this week they come together around the theme of blessing. The reading from Genesis, though only four verses, used the word “bless” or “blessing” five times. Next, Paul reminds Timothy of the blessings God bestowed on us through Christ Jesus. Finally, we witness the Transfiguration, a visual manifestation of God’s blessing on Jesus. Think about it. A visual manifestation of God’s blessing on Jesus. Amazing! That last part is so incredible to me that I need to take time to reflect on it for a few minutes.

In last Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus journeyed into the desert alone and was tempted by the devil. Today Jesus climbs a high mountain on which he is transfigured in front of his closest disciples. Whether isolated in the wilderness or accompanied by friends on a mountaintop, Jesus remains faithful to the will of God. And that’s important for us to remember because remaining faithful to the will of God will ultimately bring many blessings. May we listen carefully today to all of God’s promised blessings while remembering that we can be blessings to others, too. Be a blessing today to someone who needs you.

Faith Formation

Second Sunday of Lent

How many times do we get caught saying, “I

know that person like a book,” or “I know my kids inside and out!” We may feel close to another individual be it family or friend, but we certainly do not know everything about them. The deeper our intimacy with anyone the more our pictures and images of that person begin to break down. Imagine this: A friend says to you: “I understand you perfectly: I know your family, your background, your ethnicity, your psychological and emotional temperaments, your strengths, your weakness, and your habits. I understand you.” Would you feel understood? I don’t think so. Now imagine a very different scenario: A friend says to you: “You’re a mystery to me! I’ve known you for years, but you’ve a depth that’s somehow beyond me. The longer I know you, the more I know that you are your own mystery.” Aha! We are mysteries to each other and to ourselves.

Our relationship to God works in the same way. Initially, when our intimacy is not so deep, we feel that we understand things and we have firm feelings and ideas about God. This is developmental. I hear this from the Confirmation kids and even from parents. Frequently, “I got this,” indicates that some small morsel is grasped. But the deeper we journey, the more those feelings and ideas will begin to feel false and empty because our growing intimacy is opening us to the fuller mystery of God. Seems strange that the closer we may get to the center, the more confusing and clouded it gets. Let’s put ourselves in the place of Peter, James and John. Here Jesus allows himself to be revealed in a different way, the light of transfiguration is almost blinding. They experience Jesus in a way foreign to human understanding. They are being drawn closer into the center and things do not make sense. Perhaps that’s the lesson here. People are mysteries, the kids are mysteries, and God is a mystery not a problem to be solved. Let us enter the cloud and without being afraid, ready ourselves to listen to the “Beloved.”

With the Spirit of Jesus Living within Us, We will be Transformed into a New Creation!

Breaking Open the Word: Matthew 17:1-9 In the Gospel story Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up a high mountain, a favorite place in the Gospel of Matthew for revelation. There, the presence of God shines through Jesus and he is transformed. Moses and Elijah, representatives of the Law and the prophets, appear with Jesus. Listen to the Word: As you hear and listen to the story of the Transfiguration proclaimed, what particular words caught your attention? Was there a line in this reading that touched your heart? Look into Your Life: Children: Share a time when you felt especially close to God or Jesus. Youth: Have you ever had a “mountain top” experience where you felt exceptionally close to God? How was your life changed by that experience? Adults: Perhaps this reading calls us, not to cling to the familiar, but to leave the comforts of the parish and reach out to the world around us. In your neighborhood or community, who is waiting to hear the Good News? Together Time: The story of the transfiguration shows that knowing Jesus can change our lives. Discuss the story, including some behaviors that your family needs to change. The Season of Lent is a time for honest reflection. What changes could you make to improve your relationship with Jesus?

40 Days for Life Neighbors North Respect Life Committee Monday, March 16, 2020 1:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. 40 Days for Life is a community-based campaign that draws attention to the evil of abortion. The most visible component of 40 Days for Life is a constant prayer vigil outside a place where children are aborted. It is a prayerful witness to the clinic’s patients and employees, and to the entire community, that evil is in our midst and that with God’s help, it will be defeated. It is the hope that the vigil can be maintained 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The St. Teresa Pro-Life Committee, part of the newly combines Neighbors North Respect Life Committee, has committed to pray outside the Liberty Avenue Planned Parenthood on March 16 from 1:00 –2:30 p.m. Won’t you

join us? We will go to noon Mass at St. Sebastian’s and carpool from there. Or you can meet us in town. Please call Dianne at 412-366-7869 so we know to look for you. If you are unable to go with us that day, you can stop at Planned Parenthood, 933 Liberty Ave. any time between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. , between Feb. 26 and April 5. Someone from 40 Days for Life will be there to greet you and tell you what to do.

You are invited to join with the Spirit Refill Team of Neighbors North Catholic Community at St.

Teresa of Avila Church as we continue our journey in faith.

FIRST GRADE

First Grade is having a terrific year! We are enjoying it so much that it is hard to believe that we have completed six months of school!! We are working hard and learn-ing a lot. We have been practicing our High Frequency Words and

are now reading every day! We have learned different forms of punctuation and are using this to read with expression as well. We just love when we see exclamation marks and question marks in sen-tences!

In Math we learned about Place Value: the value of digits in the Hundreds, Tens and Ones place. We had fun comparing and ordering numbers up to 120 and writing numbers in expanded form. We were excited on the 100th day of school when we counted 100 objects, drew 100 silly animals to illustrate a poem, listed 100 words that we can now read and worked with the fifth grade to make a 100 Day graph.

In February our school focus was on the virtue of Compassion. We talked about ways to rec-ognize how people are feeling and examples of how we can help them. We made valentine cards for Meals on Wheels to brighten someone’s day. First Grade is so exciting! We are looking forward to experiencing everything that the rest of the year has in store for us!
