Annual St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast

We will be celebrating our St. Patrick’s Day Break-fast on Saturday, March 17th, at the Petroleum Club, 111 Heymann Blvd., at 8:00 am. This year it is our 19th gathering as a community of faith to re-member our patron saint. If you have a special talent and would like to share it, we would encourage you to begin the project — painting, bake, cook, garden-ing, crafts, sewing, etc., etc. Just bring it the day of the breakfast for door prizes. Please note that it is not necessary to provide a door prize. Please sign the tab-let at the back of the church if you are planning to attend as we need to know how many to prepare for. Fr. Keith! Monday, March 5th

Liturgical Roles for March

From the Pastor’s Desk

Every now and then, someone will ask a question about “the fear of the Lord”. Especially when we look at the face of God revealed in Jesus of Nazareth, one can well wonder why one should be afraid. I ran across an in-teresting insight from St. Hilary, Bishop of Poitiers in the 4th century. He points out that Scripture says the fol-lowing: “Come, my children, listen to me, I shall teach you the fear of the Lord.” Clearly this ‘fear of the Lord’ is something that has to be learned. He goes on:

““Fear” is not to be taken in the sense that common usage gives it. Fear in this ordinary sense is the trepi-dation our weak humanity feels when it is afraid of suffering something it does not want to happen. We are afraid, or made afraid, because of a guilty conscience, the rights of someone more powerful, an attack from one who is stronger, sickness, encountering a wild beast, suffering evil in any form. This kind of fear is not taught: it happens because we are weak. We do not have to learn what we should fear: objects of fear bring their own ter-ror with them. “

How does one learn true ‘fear of the Lord’? He says that it has to be “acquired by obedience to the com-mandments, by holiness of life and by knowledge of the truth.” One may assume that part of the truth referenced here is the truth about God, who is love, as Scripture attests. There is an intimate connection between God’s love, our love for God, and the ‘fear of the Lord’. So what we are talking about here as we seek to walk in his ways is a recognition of the majesty and greatness of God, the creator of all that is. The ‘fear of the Lord’ is much more about a sense of wonder and awe than it is about the kind of fear that rises up within us when we are threatened or in danger.

This sense of awe and wonder does not prevent us from approaching God, as common human fear might do. Quite to the contrary, recognizing the majesty of God should draw us every closer to him, just as one is drawn to come close to something beautiful and amazing. Consider the splendor of all creation. Since creation itself is an expression of who God is, when we behold the beautiful in the sky or the ocean or in any of God’s creatures, we are led to adoration of the hand that created it. We want to be close to that Creator.

So do not fear the ‘fear of the Lord’. Instead, remember always the greatness of the one who so loved the world that he gave his only Son, for the salvation of the world. Walk in his ways, learn of his truth, and you shall walk in the light of life. In this manner, we learn the ‘fear of the Lord.’
