re-lit: the Heart of Evangelization

We have Good News: a project in response to requests from young adults and others on how to share your faith – a training course for those that are excited about learning how to share the faith with friends, family and co-workers! Make this a Lent to re-member by taking on the challenge to re-ignite your own faith. Learn strategies to confidently articulate answers to frequently asked questions and then go out and just do it! “Come and see” Relit: The Heart of Evangelization. Then let’s share it! Join the program developer, Michael Dopp, and the rest of the parish on Friday, March 9 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm; Saturday, March 10 from 9:00am to 4:30pm; Friday, March 23, 7:00-9:00pm & Saturday, March 24, 9:00am - 4:30pm. There is no fee to attend, but we would appreciate it if you would sign up in the foyer so we have enough lunch for everyone.

Religious Education

There is a Parent/Student Confirmation Retreat on Tuesday, March 6 at 7:30pm. Religious Education Classes for grades 1-6 will be held on Wednes-day, March 7 at their respective times.

Rosary On The Hill

TAKE THE ROSARY CHALLENGE!!

Come pray with us for one hour. Jesus asks us to pray with Him and Mother Mary encourages us to do as he tells us.

March 10th at 3 p.m. at the Cross on the Hill in front of Church. All ages are welcome.

Please dress appropriately for the weather and bring a chair if needed.

THE SURLY BIRD Some doctors say that cheerful people resist disease better than grumpy ones. The surly bird catches the germ. - Anonymous

Peace & Social Justice Peace must start in ourselves, one soul at a time.

Act & Pray for Peace

Scripture calls us to "be doers of the word and not hearers only . . . [for] faith by itself, if it has

no works, is dead" (James 1:22, 2:17).

March Intention – Know Your Purpose

Do you believe you’re doing what you’re called to do? Or are you still in a place of waiting? These are questions geared to examine where you are in this season of your life.

1. Do you know your purpose? 2. If you know your purpose, what are you doing right now with it? 3. Are you cultivating your gifts? Are you…training?, practicing?, studying?, researching, etc.? 5. Are you ignoring any gifts by not using some of them? C. Richards

Act - Know and develop your purpose.

Pray - Heavenly Father, guide me to know my purpose. Show me what to do. Amen -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thoughts/Suggestions: Any suggestions for increasing peace?

This can be dropped in the collection basket. God bless you as we journey together. St. Bernard Peace and Social Justice Ministry Meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 4:30 pm. (March 13)

Respect Life Spiritual Adoption Update

Week 27

"They say that the eyes are the window to the soul. Well, my soul has been around since God cre-ated me 27 weeks ago, but my eyes are finally nearly finished developing. The membrane that was cover-ing my eyes has split and now I can see. My eyes are blue, now, but after I am born, they may change to another color in a few weeks. They will be whatev-er color God has already decided they will be. God's plan is full of miracles. Please keep praying for me."

Lenten Pro-life Prayer Father of all mercy, We thank you for this season of grace and light. We know that sin has blinded us. Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance.

Since you, O God, are light itself, Give all your people a clearer understanding

Of what is sin, and what is virtue. Grant in particular that we may see, as never before, The profound dignity of every human life, Including the vulnerable unborn children.

Give us grace to defend Our brothers and sisters in the womb By our prayers, our words, And our self-sacrificing actions.

We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Respect Life TRANSGENDERISM:

A COMPASSIONATE APPROACH March 15th - By Fr. Thomas Loya @Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church

Have questions about the Transgender issue? How you should respond? What should you say? What should you NOT say? What not to do when a family member claims to be “Transgender”? What does the Church teach us? What is the correct Christian Catholic response? The Knowledge and Prayer Series is sponsoring Fr. Thomas Loya, Pastor of Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church and world-wide expert and speaker on the “Theology of the Body” to speak on the issue of Transgenderism. The presentation will be at 7:00 PM on March 15th at Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church, 14610 Will-Cook Rd in Homer Glen.

The Knowledge and Prayer series is sponsored by the Multi Parish Respect Life Ministries from and Our Lady of the Woods, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Michael in Orland Park and St. Bernard’s, Our Mother of Good Counsel, and Annunciation Byzantine Catholic Church in Homer Glen

LENTEN REGULATIONS

1. Abstinence from eating meat is to be observed by all those 14 years old and above on Ash Wednes-day, Good Friday and all the Fridays in Lent.

2. Fasting is required of those ages 18 - 60 on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting is defined as one full meal and two smaller meals not equal-ing another full meal together. Snacking is not per-mitted. People may be excused from these practic-es for certain reasons, e.g. pregnancy and illness.

Lenten Concert

Please come and support the Adult Choir and Proclaimers of St. Bernard in a stunning multi-media and musical performance that will take you on a prayerful journey down the Sorrowful Way with Jesus. Songs, readings, and pictures will take you through the last hours of Jesus. This is something that has never been done at St. Bernard and is not to be missed! Our parish ministries have been working very hard to prepare for this concert and would love a huge audience! The concert is free, but a free will offering will

be taken to benefit the St. Bernard Music Ministry. There will be a small reception after the concert. Please join us on Friday, March 16th at 7:00pm. Please see Julie Kane for more information.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Ap-peal (CMAA). Your gifts will benefit so many through the thirty ministries our annual appeal supports. Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $54,900.00. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as partners in caring, as every gift — large and small — makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish! Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA. If you have not yet made a pledge, it is not too late. Pledge envelopes are still available by the church doors, or you can make a gift online at jolietdio-ceseappeal.org.

Reviewing Our Parish Facilities

In my Christmas letter to the parishioners, I an-nounced that we will be initiating a task force to review and assess our parish’s physical facilities, equipment and furnishings and make recommendations for en-hancements, remodeling and/or expansion. This effort is in response to many concerns expressed by parishion-ers about our facilities in my different “Get Acquainted” listening sessions when I first became pastor here in the early fall. My own experience and observations here at St. Bernard’s this first year has affirmed such concerns and surfaced others. Once created, the task force will assess ALL the par-ish facilities, including the worship space, devotional shrines, reconciliation room, sacristy & auxiliary rooms, classrooms, foyer, kitchen, restrooms, storage, meeting space, offices and pastor’s residence. Its recommenda-tions will be presented to the parish at large for discus-sion, modification and approval. The feasibility of fund-ing the recommendations will also be considered. Since the center piece of any parish’s facilities is the worship space (i.e., “the church”), I have invited the cur-rent lay leadership of the parish to prepare for the task force effort by attending a study series on the updated “Guidelines for Catholic Worship Space,” as directed by the bishops of the US, and their application in our dio-cese of Joliet. So, a group of about 24 parishioners from the parish Pastoral Staff, Pastoral Council, Worship Committee and Finance Council have begun a study series on four consecutive Monday evenings during Lent. The series is led by two certified liturgical design consultants in the Joliet diocese: Fr. Thomas Paul and Ms. Sandy Book. The work of the task force and whatever work flows from it promises to be a major undertaking for St. Ber-nard’s that will take months, even years. The work will include much consultation with and engagement of the entire parish community as well as that of the diocese. Any parishioners interested in becoming involved in the work of the task force should let me know as soon as possible. We begin this effort with Bishop Conlon’s blessing. And we ask for the prayers of all parishioners as we under-take this important challenge for the good of the parish and its future. Fr. Joe McCormick, OSA
