HARROLD ZION MISSION STATEMENT

Harrold Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church is a

family of believers who seek to provide an open

and caring environment where all are welcome

and experience the hope and love of Jesus

Christ. As members of the Evangelical Lutheran

Church in America, we believe the Lutheran

Confessions to be a faithful interpretation of

Scripture, and our ministry revolves around the

Word and Sacraments.

We are committed to being good stewards of

God’s creation by sharing the good news of

Jesus Christ through word and deed. Thus we

respond to human need with acts of love and

compassion as we bear witness to the love we

have first received from God

through Jesus Christ.

FROM THE SENIOR PASTOR…

Dear Friends in Christ,

It is hard to believe that the year is passing so quickly that Lent is just around the corner. This is an

important time of learning from the Christ who came to respond to our need of forgiveness and hope

with a life, with acts of love and compassion.

Hmmm….that sounds like our Mission Statement, that which defines who we are as Harrold Zion

Lutheran Church. This Lent is a time for us to see how we are doing as a church in light of the

mission statement and how we are doing in living out our purpose.

This Lent is our fifth year to live out this portion of our mission statement through contributions for

Lutheran World Relief. First year, it was pigs, then chickens, the cows (my favorite). We had fun with

this one!), and last year it was water wells. And this year, it will be……………….well, you just have to

wait to hear it announced at the services the weekend of February 22 and 23!!!

How does this fit into our purpose? Read the following words from Lutheran World Hunger – Hunger facts:

• 821 million people around the world - that's more than 1 in 10 - can't access the food they need to live active, healthy lives.

• According to the most recent estimates, 736 million people live in extreme poverty on less than $1.90 per day. That's 10% of the world's population.”

By providing immediate relief to those who are hungry, we meet basic needs and recognize the universal human right to food. But ending hunger is about more than food. By connecting people with the resources they need to produce food and gain access to clean water, education, health care and sources of income, long-term, sustainable change can be accomplished. By continuing our support of Lutheran World Hunger through Lent, we are without a doubt fulfilling our purpose as the church living out its mission statement. Any why? It’s in the statement again – we have first received this love from God through Jesus Christ. That is the purpose of these forty days. That is the purpose of our church. That is our purpose as Children of God, to make a difference. Peace be with you this Lenten Season. I’ll see you in church!! Blessings – Pastor John

FOOD 2 GO 4 KIDS

Thank you to Harrold Zion members for their support of Food 2 Go 4 Kids weekend backpack lunch

program for three area elementary school. On February 1 and 2, as we celebrated Souper Bowl of

Caring weekend, Harrold Zion donated $1,100 for this program. That will go a long way in Harrold

Zion's participation in this program.

Four years ago, Harrold Zion was instrumental in initiating a weekend backpack lunch program at

Fort Allen Elementary School for children in need who are not eating lunches over the weekend. This

school year, we pack 90 bags every time we are scheduled to provide the weekend lunches.

A year and a half ago, the weekend backpack lunch program extended to West Point Elementary

School where Harrold Zion packs lunches for 60 children when they are scheduled.

In January, Food 2 Go 4 Kids began at Maxwell Elementary School. Harrold Zion packs for 40

children when our turn comes up on the schedule.

It is a joy to work with the following in our community as together, we are Food 2 Go 4 Kids: St. Paul's

Catholic Church, Word of Life, Greensburg Central Catholic High School, Our Lady of Grace Catholic

Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Otterbein Methodist Church, First Christian Church,

Westminster Presbyterian Church, St. Matthias Lutheran Church, and Harrold Zion Lutheran Church.

TAIZE SERVICE IN MARCH

Harrold Zion looks forward to joining together with Zion's Lutheran

Church, and St. Paul's and St. Bruno's Catholic Churches for our next

Taize Service on Sunday, March 15, at 6:00 PM. The service will be held

at St. Paul's Catholic Church, 820 Carbon Road, Greensburg.

Taize is a tiny village in the eastern part of France. Since 1940, it has been the home of an ecumenical community where prayer is the center of their life. It originated with Protestants and grew to include other denominations.

The goal of this community is to strive for communion among all. From its beginnings, the community has worked for reconciliation among Christians split apart into different denominations. It is also their goal to see the same among all of humanity. Those who participate in Taize’s prayers look for ways of living lives of prayer and commitment in their own local situations in whatever country they live. Silence is a critical part of these services. Since Harrold Zion, St. Paul's, St. Bruno's, and Zion's churches have combined for these services, we have experienced a good number of worshipers who find these services to be very meaningful. They have been held at Harrold Zion', Zion's, and now St. Paul's.

DINNER CHURCH – MARCH 29

6:00 PM

Catch a glimpse of God.

See the Divine in a neighbor or stranger.

We believe something sacred happens when we break bread at a common table.

Have you joined us for our monthly Dinner Church? It is a service that is well received by those who

join with us and describe it as “beautiful”, “intimate,” and “meaningful.”

This service follows the format of worship for the early Christians as it takes us back to the first

century Communion practice of sharing a meal as worship. Christians in the early gathered together

around a meal, telling the story of Jesus' last supper, and sharing the cup.

Catch a glimpse of God as we join in worship, dinner, conversation, and fellowship.

FIRST COMMUNION CLASS

First Communion instruction will be held on Saturday, March 28, at 9:30 AM in the

Meeting Room next to the elevator. This class is for any child whose parents

desire that their child receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion. At least one

parent is to attend the class with their child. Those attending their class will

receive their First Communion on Holy Thursday, April 9, at the 7:00 PM service.

Please sign up in the Communication Center or on the church website at www.harroldzion.org. If any

questions, please see or contact Pastor John (724-837-7327).

WORKING WITH A LOCAL AGENCY

At times our church offices send their papers for recycling and shredding to the local Blind

Association. This not only allows us to find a place to send our confidential papers but also allows us

to support the work of an important agency in our community as they work with the blind and visually

impaired.

The Blind Association’s Document Destruction provides shredding services to over 3,000 customers

annually and covers seven counties (Westmoreland, Indiana, Cambria, Washington, Fayette,

Allegheny & Somerset). Their facility is secured and equipped with an access control system and is

monitored 24/7. They destroy all documents in compliance with federal and state laws and

regulations. All proceeds generated by the Blind Association’s Document Destruction fund programs

that benefit the blind, sight impaired and intellectually disabled individuals.

Items accepted are: white and colored paper, manilla folders, hanging folders, unopened mail, check

books and transaction logs. Paper clips/staples/binders/plastic covers may remain on since they

have individuals who sort through to remove all of these items.

Items not accepted are: newspapers, magazines, photos, wet/moldy paper, garbage, mail flyers and

plastic.

LEFTOVERS

We all love a good meal of leftovers at home, right? However, the church asks that you do not leave food in any of the refrigerators or freezers after your personal or church events. The items tend to be forgotten about and expire, which means we are left to clean them out. Please take all food items with you following your events. Thank you for your cooperation.
