MARCH 2017
Well March certainly came in with a huge ROAR as we
were hit with the 3rd big blizzard of the winter. On
Tuesday March 7th, we had 65% of our students ab-
sent because of the severe weather conditions. We
are all crossing our fingers that spring is around the
corner.
Blizzards or no blizzards, always great things are
happening at Meadows School. A team of dedicated
teachers just finished applying for the Indigo Love of
Reading Grant. If we are successful, this grant will
help us inject valuable reading resources into our
school and classroom libraries.
Our MY students enjoyed the Winter Activity Day on
Feb. 27 as student participated in skiing, bowling,
snowshoeing and gym activities. CP Express will be
here to perform a concert on the afternoon of March
22nd. There are a few Meadows grads that will be
featured in the band this year. On March 23 the Gr.
7/8 will partake in their annual Battle of the Books
event.
Hope to see you on March 17 for Parent Teacher.
Have a great March and Spring Break.
-Mr. Lim, Principal

BRUCE AUSTIN LIBRARY
It has been another fun month in the Bruce Austin
Library! The Scholastic Book Fair was Feb. 22 and it
was a roaring success.
$5200.00 of product was sold in one day. Thanks to
students, families and staff for supporting this fund-
raiser.
Product taken from Book Fair: $1038.30 and this
amount included 23 classrooms @ $20/class, 24 Grade
7/8 Volunteers at $5 each, I Love to Read Prizes @
$153.80 and then $304.50 kept as product for the
Library.
21 students won a free door prize, Theo and Adam
Ficek’s family and Mrs. McCausland’s class won $25
worth of books in the Family Draw.
Miss Sobkow, Mrs. Stutsky and Mrs. Harvey Zenk/
Janzen classes each had a book donated through the
Classroom Wish Program ( 3 separate families bought
each class a book).
Mrs. Lee chose the product/cash option and so as well
as the $1038.30 taken in product, $965.23 cash was
made and is in a library account to be used for “special
events”, more books and rewards for student volun-
teers.

Beaty’s books; Rosie Revere Engineer, Iggy Peck Ar-
chitect, Ada Twist Scientist. These titles fall under
the “Reflective River” category of the 21st Century

your mistakes!

COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Eleven eager grade 5/6 students along with Mrs. De-
Decker came together to form the Meadows School
Community Outreach group as part of cluster sessions.
We had an excellent time touring the Samaritan House
and helping package up potatoes for donation. The
students met with Ryan, the volunteer coordinator, to
learn all about the purpose and importance of the Sa-
maritan house. All students left motivated to volun-
teer again in the future. We also had the opportunity
to visit Lions’ Manor and play games with the seniors
living there, and to deliver special Valentine’s cards we
had made! Both seniors and students learned new
games and all parties left with a smile on their face!
We felt very welcome. The students also spent an hour
in the life of Mr. Stapleton, our school custodian,
washing windows, taking out recycling, dusting, and or-
ganizing. We are excited to share our experience with
grade 1 /2 students in the hope of inspiring them to
reach out too!

SECRET Skills
March – Effective Participation
For the month of March, students will be learning about Effective Participation at Meadows
School. This SECRET Skill includes the four sub-skills:
Get Involved
Persuade Others
Find Solutions
Identify Issues
Being an Effective Participator - Skills Defined:
Get involved - When you develop this skill you will understand you live in a community and everyone needs to help each other. People with this skill can help others even if they don’t have the same values or beliefs simply because they know we are all in a community together. Make a persuasive yet open-minded case - When you have developed this skill you will be able to work out all the arguments for and against a particular idea. You will make sure you consider all these carefully and listen to all sides. When you have decided what you think should happen, you can build arguments capable of persuading others whilst remaining honest and fair. Find Solutions - When you have developed this skill you will be able to break a problem up into smaller chunks so that a larger problem becomes manageable. You will be able to find practical ways in which people can get involved to move things forward. You would know that there is no such thing as an unsolvable problem just one you can make less of a problem. This skill is also helpful in getting tasks done quickly as it allows you to break up tasks into different jobs and organize the order in which jobs need to be done.
Identify Issues - See injustice or practice which could improve. When you have this skill you can identify im-provements that would benefit others as well as yourself. You work out which things should change in your area, place of work or the world. People who are less skilled in this area may need people like you to be an advocate for them and to help them identify problems that could be solved to improve the community as a whole.
