Brandon Valley High School January Newsletter Brandon Valley High School 301 South Splitrock Blvd. Brandon, SD 57005 From the Principal [email protected] It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through the school year. It has been a great year to this point thanks to the efforts of students and staff. Thank you for your generosity and that of your children. The students, staff, and families of this district provided giſts for 142 students from our district through the Angel Tree lo- cated in the High School Commons. Special thanks to the Student Council and Peer Helpers for sponsoring the tree and wrapping all of the presents and to BVHS coun- selor Michelle Stemwedel and administrave assistant Jessica Henson for organizing the 250+ presents. Thanks also for your generosity with Serve and Learn Student Associaon (SALSA) collecon for Lifescapes. Your donaons will be used to help adults with disabilies around our area. Semester tests will be on Tuesday-Thursday, January 9-11. A test schedule will be posted around the building and on our high school webpage. It is important to note that buses will run at their normal me. Students that are not exempt from tesng and wishing to make changes in their assigned tesng schedule will need to meet with Mr. Schlekeway on January 3-4 to explain the academic value in changing their test schedule. Regardless of exempon status or whether or not they are taking the class for credit, all students in Rising Scholars classes must take the semester test and the results will be 20% of their semester grade. Students that are exempt from tesng and wishing to sll test to see if they can improve their grade can make whatever arrangement they wish with their teachers. If the exempted student s test does not help their grade it will not count. All freshmen and sophomores will be tesng. There are a few classes where teachers are not required to give a semester test (PE, Speech, Computer…). District policy requires that a student pass two of the three major grades (first quarter, second quarter, semester test) and have a 65% or higher final percentage in order to pass a class. Even students that are exempt must test and pass the test if they have failed the first or second quarter. If you have any quesons about semester tests, please contact an administrator or counselor. Students wishing to make a schedule change for the second semester will need to have a parent-signed schedule change form before any change can be considered by their counselor. These forms can be accessed online or a hard copy can be picked up in the high school office. One is also aached to this newsleer. Students have unl the end of the first week of the second semester to make a schedule change. The reality is that classes are very full and opons to change schedules based on room in other classes will be very limited. www.brandonvalley.k12.sd.us 605-582-3211 Principal Dr. Gregg Talco [email protected] Website: Brandonvalley.k12.sd.us Link: Principal Associate Principal Mark Schlekeway [email protected] Associate Principal Randy Marso [email protected] Counselor (A-G) Kara Likness [email protected] Counselor (H-N) Michelle Stemwedel [email protected] Counselor (O-Z) Kae Murdy [email protected] January 2018

From the Principal [email protected]

It is hard to believe that we are almost half way through the school year. It has been

a great year to this point thanks to the efforts of students and staff. Thank you for

your generosity and that of your children. The students, staff, and families of this

district provided gifts for 142 students from our district through the Angel Tree lo-

cated in the High School Commons. Special thanks to the Student Council and Peer

Helpers for sponsoring the tree and wrapping all of the presents and to BVHS coun-

selor Michelle Stemwedel and administrative assistant Jessica Henson for organizing

the 250+ presents. Thanks also for your generosity with Serve and Learn Student

Association (SALSA) collection for Lifescapes. Your donations will be used to help

adults with disabilities around our area.

Semester tests will be on Tuesday-Thursday, January 9-11. A test schedule will be

posted around the building and on our high school webpage. It is important to note

that buses will run at their normal time. Students that are not exempt from testing

and wishing to make changes in their assigned testing schedule will need to meet

with Mr. Schlekeway on January 3-4 to explain the academic value in changing their

test schedule. Regardless of exemption status or whether or not they are taking the

class for credit, all students in Rising Scholars classes must take the semester test

and the results will be 20% of their semester grade. Students that are exempt from

testing and wishing to still test to see if they can improve their grade can make

whatever arrangement they wish with their teachers. If the exempted student’s test

does not help their grade it will not count. All freshmen and sophomores will be

testing. There are a few classes where teachers are not required to give a semester

test (PE, Speech, Computer…). District policy requires that a student pass two of the

three major grades (first quarter, second quarter, semester test) and have a 65% or

higher final percentage in order to pass a class. Even students that are exempt must

test and pass the test if they have failed the first or second quarter. If you have any

questions about semester tests, please contact an administrator or counselor.

Students wishing to make a schedule change for the second semester will need to

have a parent-signed schedule change form before any change can be considered

by their counselor. These forms can be accessed online or a hard copy can be picked

up in the high school office. One is also attached to this newsletter. Students have

until the end of the first week of the second semester to make a schedule change.

The reality is that classes are very full and options to change schedules based on

room in other classes will be very limited.

Auditions for this year’s BV musical, “Cinderella” are coming up in February. The cast this year will consist of student from all grade levels in the district. This is the “Broadway Version” of this well-known fairy tale. And this means many more speaking and singing roles for all. All those that audition will be asked to sing a vo-cal solo from the show. That music will be made available to all the music teachers in the BV District by mid-January, so preparations can start then. For the 7th-12th grade students, a short dance audition will also be required. Casting will be com-pleted and rehearsals will begin on February 17. An important pre-audition meeting will be held in the Performing Arts Center on February 7 at 3:30pm. If there are any questions or issues, please contact the director, Mr. Kevin Brick. Brandon Valley High School will be hosting its second blood drive of the year for the Community Blood Bank on Wednesday, January 24th and again on Thursday, Janu-ary 25th. Donation times run every 10 minutes during the scheduled time slots and total donation time takes approximately 30 minutes. All donors will be provided with a free breakfast on the day of their donation as well as lots of drinks and snacks after they’re done donating! This is a great chance for both students and adults to learn how to help their community and become lifelong donors! Individuals under the age of 18 will need a parent permission form signed in order to donate blood. Donors should be in good general health (no colds) and must weigh at least 110 pounds. Donors must also be sure to eat and drink well before and after donating and they are asked to please avoid consuming any type of ener-gy drink prior to donating. Some form of identification needs to be shown in order to donate. The public may sign up for a donation time by calling the high school at 582-3211 or emailing [email protected]. The final blood drive of the year will be held in April. Any questions can be directed to Lisa Fuccello at the high school.
