READER FEEDBACKLara,

It was great seeing you at the Katy Home and Garden Show this year. Keep up the great work. We love getting our absolutely! Katy Magazine each month.

Cameron K.

Spring has finally sprung, and I am seeing colorful flowers and green grass sprouting up across Katy. On this month’s cover, if you didn’t know, Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital is expanding – again! Learn about their growth – from the new East Tower to the new offsite Convenient Care Center – all to better serve the growing Katy community.

Also in this issue, learn about the 71st Pin Oak Charity Horse Show set for Tuesday, March 22nd through Sunday, April 3rd. absolutely! Katy Magazine is a proud media sponsor. In ad-dition, Interfaith Ministries’ Meals on Wheels now serves Katy and is making a difference in the lives of many Katy seniors already.

Finally, I can’t close out this issue without thanking my mom, Bonnie Bell, who passed away January 17th at the young age of 68. She was a great lady who loved Katy. She was a resident for 30 years and a Katy ISD mom since we were in elementary school. She became great friends with the neighborhood advertisers as an account executive, but more importantly, she was a great mom and fantastic grandma who would even Uber the grandkids around Katy when she couldn’t drive anymore. She was also a girlfriend to all of my girl-

friends. Yes, she was shining star to me and many others, and I’m going to miss her.

Absolutely! yours,

LaraLara [email protected]

No Longer aLittle Hospital on the Prairie

Memorial Hermann came to Katy in 1999, when the Katy Community Hospital joined the Memorial Hermann Health System. At the time, the area population was just less than 140,000, Katy ISD had 32,000 students, and the brand new Cinco Ranch High School provided most of the “skyline” west of the new Grand Parkway. Memorial Hermann CEO Dan Wolterman pointed out that decades ago the health system recognized Katy as one of the fastest-growing areas in Tex-as – a community with great schools, churches and libraries that also deserved the very best in health care. “We made a commitment in 1999 to make that happen right along with Katy and to provide the visionary health care that is one of a community’s leading assets,” Wolterman said.

Hermann Katy Hospital is thriving and expanding right along with the community it serves.

Expanded Health Carein the Heart of Katy

Memorial Hermann has worked diligently to fulfill that promise. Within the last few months, the hospital – Katy’s oldest major health care provider – has completed an $85 million expansion to its 66 acre primary campus on I-10 at the Grand Parkway and opened a new offsite Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center (CCC) near the intersec-tion of the Grand Parkway and the Westpark Tollway.

Additions to the primary campus include a 229,000 square-foot, six-story patient tower called East Tower, plus a second 100,000 square foot, four-story medical plaza adja-cent to the hospital. The campus also has 1,400 free parking spaces to ensure ease of patient and visitor access.

Memorial Hermann Katy is one of the area’s largest em-ployers, and the opening of the new East Tower is expected to create an estimated 160 new clinical and administrative jobs – an increase of nearly 18 percent. Of the hospital’s ap-proximately 900 employees before the expansion, 159 have worked there for 15 years or more, and 13 have 30 plus years of service.

The hospital’s 582 affiliated physicians represent medi-cal expertise in 47 different specialties and subspecialties. Thirty-eight of the affiliated doctors have been there for 25 years or more, seven since the original Katy hospital opened in 1981.

The hospital also has an active corps of 199 community volunteers – six of whom have served for 25 years or more. The group soon will expand by about 40 or more volunteers to cover the needs of the new facility.

Another display of the hospital’s deep community connec-tion is that all of the conference rooms in the two towers are named after Katy ISD high school mascots. That’s especially fitting, considering that Memorial Hermann Katy has pro-vided sports medicine services and trainers for Katy ISD ath-letic teams since 2007.

The new patient tower adds capacity in several areas: sur-gical suites, medical and surgical beds, ante- and postpartum specialty care for high-risk pregnancies, neonatal intensive care and pediatrics. In addition to almost doubling the size of the emergency center, the hospital is making significant expansions to catheterization labs, diagnostic imaging areas, intensive and intermediate care units, women’s services and sports medicine and endoscopy.

With the first phase of the patient tower expansion on floors one through four, the hospital’s in-patient capacity has increased from 142 to 199 beds. At build-out – the opening of floors five and six – the total bed count will be approximate-ly 300. Expansion of the general intensive care unit (ICU) brings the total ICU bed count to 20. Additionally, it features new amenities for family members of ICU patients to sleep and shower at the hospital.

One of the most innovative features of the new tower is the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which al-lows a higher level of care for babies born earlier or with mul-tiple complications. In most NICUs, newborns stay in a large nursery with limited space for visiting parents and family. The new NICU features eight private rooms, each equipped to accommodate mothers with twins, as well as accommoda-tions for family members to stay comfortably in the hospital overnight. There are two adjoining suites that can be con-nected to accommodate triplets or quadruplets. The floor also includes specialized obstetrical care rooms for consultation and services by UT Physicians’ high-risk pregnancy special-ists.

The new East Tower created space for a major expansion in the West Tower of the hospital’s laboratory – now more than 6,000 square feet – with the capacity to conduct 150 different lab tests utilizing 12 state-of-the-art instruments. Two new staff members have joined the 27 highly trained, certified lab professionals who conduct and interpret diag-nostic testing. Each month, Memorial Hermann Katy per-forms more than 31,000 lab tests and processes more than 400 pathology specimens.

One of the most innovative features of the new tower is the Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which allows a higher level of care for babies born earlier or with multiple complications. The larger, more spacious rooms enable families to feel more comfortable while staying with their baby around the clock. Here, mom Taylor Camp confers with Chandelyn Marshall with baby Jackson Camp.

A little farther south on the Grand Parkway, Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center provides one-stop, coordinated ac-

cess to an extensive offering of Memorial Hermann services in a single, convenient location. “Access and convenience are more important than ever for busy families,” Memorial Hermann Katy CEO Jim Parisi said. “The Convenient Care Center focuses on meeting patients’ needs with the right care at the right time.”

Services at the Memorial Hermann Convenient Center:

Primary Care: Specialists in family medicine, internal medi-cine and pediatrics provide the highest-quality primary care, six days a week from 7 am to 7 pm for both appointments and walk-in patients. The center provides comprehensive, integrated health care services for patients from newborns to seniors.

Emergency Center (EC): A 24 hour EC offers treatment by experienced, board-certified emergency room physicians affiliated with Memorial Hermann and shorter wait times than traditional hospital emergency rooms, as well as onsite state-of-the-art di-agnostic testing and imaging that may not be available in stand-alone, quick-care ERs.

Diagnostic Lab: The onsite lab can administer more than 80 different tests to ensure fast, accurate diagnoses for emergency room patients. Lab technicians are available 24/7 to provide EC physicians with test results within 30 minutes.

Imaging: Onsite, state-of-the-art imaging services include CT scans, ultrasound, X-rays, bone density testing and mammogra-phy. The Convenient Care Center accepts imaging orders from any referring physician and shares results automatically through Physician Link.

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation: Certified rehabilitation therapy specialists offer a full range of physical and occupational therapy services for patients who are recovering from on-the-job, sports-related and other injuries.

Focused on ServiceMemorial Hermann Katy CEO Jim

Parisi emphasizes that as Memorial Hermann Katy grows, the hospital will keep its focus on the people it serves. “This expansion is not about a bigger facility, more beds or additional staff. It’s about taking care of patients. As we grow along with the community, we pledge to maintain the highest level of quality and safety for our patients and

their loved ones,” he said. “We’re committed to that promise, because a community as special as Katy deserves only the very best.”

For more information, visit memorialhermann.org.

The Memorial Hermann Joint Center uses a team ap-proach to serving patients and their families, offering a com-prehensive array of advanced orthopedic treatments for joint pain. Services include new prescription options, joint injec-tions, physical therapy and minimally invasive joint replace-ment surgery.

Meet Rodnika Ross

By Joan Frances

HOT SHOTHigh School

“I can look forward to a higher education thanks to the efforts of the people at this school.” – Rodnika Ross

K aty Independent School District’s Martha Raines High School has a goal to

graduate students who are “work ready, community ready and college ready.” Students must be enrolled in a Katy ISD campus, and acceptance to attend Raines is by application only. This project-based learning curriculum allows students to work through projects in small, collab-orative groups, which allows for a low student to teacher ratio and a development of interpersonal skills focused on technology. One senior who has taken advantage of the benefits of Raines High School is Rodnika Ross.

Since starting at Raines last year, Rodnika has had perfect attendance. She is a strong student academi-cally, and for the past year, Rodnika has delivered the school announce-ments every morning. Michael Wil-lett, Rodnika’s marketing teacher, recommended her to the administra-tion, and she agreed to give it a try. Rodnika enjoys beginning the day announcing school information and accomplishments to the teachers and the student body. She is also a leader on the marketing team. When asked why being a leader is fulfill-ing to her, Rodnika said, “I am able to make a difference with a group of people who are just as ready as me to change our school’s perspective. I’m happy to say we have been chang-ing so many people’s viewpoint of Raines. This school is awesome, and everyone needs to know about it.

“The faculty and staff are support-ive and helpful, students achieve so many different levels of success, and

it is exciting to be a part of such a high level of accomplishment. I can look for-ward to a higher education thanks to the efforts of the people at this school.”

Rodnika’s favorite teacher is her Odyssey instructor Andrea Miller. “Raines has so many amazing teachers, but Mrs. Miller has helped me more by setting an example every day for her students,” said Rodnika. “She’s always so bright and energetic and encourages me to be the best that I can be. She helps us before and after school with so much more than schoolwork, and I admire her.”

Rodnika attended the Student Leadership Conference for Katy ISD this year and met other students from all over the area. The conference guid-ed students to be effective leaders for their school, and Rodnika enjoyed be-ing an active part of the conference. She represented Raines High School and was able to share her wonderful experiences at the school.

One value that is important to Rod-nika is responsibility. “It plays a huge part in being successful. As a leader,

I take full responsibility for my ac-complishments and set an example for my peers. I never hesitate to do the work as a team player and have earned respect as well. If you’re not responsible for your actions, you won’t get any work done.”

The one thing Rodnika will trea-sure most during her high school experience is, “When my class went to talk to the partners in education about Raines High School, we met so many wonderful people there. They were very receptive to the concept of the school, and I am proud to say that I am a member of the graduat-ing class of 2016.”

Rodnika has not made a decision on the college she will attend in the fall yet, but she will be pursuing a career in physical therapy. Congrat-ulations on your commitment to suc-cess and admirable leadership skills Rodnika. Good luck as you move forward to make a difference in the future of the world.

Rodnika

Dr. Jeanna Mascorro has treated pa-tients in the Katy area for the past three years and recently decided to open her own practice closer to home. Fulshear Foot and Ankle is located west of FM 1463 on 1093 before reaching Down-town Fulshear.

The practice offers treatment for all foot and ankle problems, both surgical and non-surgical. On site X-rays, ultra-sound and testing for peripheral vascular disease are also available. Dr. Mascorro is extensively trained in sports medicine and offers the latest surgical techniques for a quicker recovery and faster return to sports. Fulshear Foot and Ankle en-joys treating all ages and in some cases, the entire family!

Sports injuries, heel pain, ingrown toenails, ankle injuries, diabetic foot care, wounds and toenail fungus are among the most common non-surgical problems seen. Surgery can sometimes be required for frequent ankle sprains (lateral ankle instability), bunions, ham-mertoes, Achilles pain and tendon rup-tures. Flatfoot reconstruction is some-times needed for those with severe deformity, although Dr. Mascorro always attempts conservative treatment prior to surgical intervention.

Dr. Mascorro is passionate about limb salvage, which begins with patient edu-cation, diabetic visits once a year and preventative testing. She is also part of the Methodist West Wound Care Team at the Christus Hospital.

Fulshear Foot and Ankle wants you to live pain free! For more information, visit www.FulshearFootandAnkle.com or call 281-391-1212.

Meals on Wheels Expands to KatyKaty area homebound seniors 60 and

older can now apply for Interfaith Minis-tries for Greater Houston’s (IM) Meals on Wheels program. This valuable service provides seniors with a daily nutritional meal and a wellness check from their Meals on Wheels volunteer driver.

Meals on Wheels senior Lynda Beene suffers from scoliosis and arthritis, which makes standing unaided for more than a few minutes extremely difficult and cooking almost impossible. “If y’all

didn’t come to my door every day, I have no idea what I would be eating or if I’d even be living still,” she said.

Warren Wenner, Director of IM’s Meals on Wheels, said this senior’s story illus-trates an important service provided by Meals on Wheels. “It’s not just the meal that makes the difference for our seniors, it’s the visit from the outside world and knowing that someone is checking in on them every day,” he said.

IM currently serves about 4,000 se-niors throughout the Harris County area. So far, 66 seniors are already being served in the Katy area with the assis-tance of local partners like the First Unit-ed Methodist Church of Katy, where vol-unteers pick up their Meals on Wheels food to be delivered. To succeed in the program, IM and its partners rely on the help of volunteer drivers. More than 117 Katy volunteers have been trained so far to work with Meals on Wheels.

For more information on Meals on Wheels, visit www.imgh.org or call 713-533-4900.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS

Once you make a commitment and get on board with the project, go from there with these tips from Barbara Reich, pro-fessional organizer.

1 Start by determining your over-all goal. Are you simply organizing what you have, or do you need to

purge unused items? Get rid of things you don’t need or won’t wear. Remember that items in good condition can be donated to those in need.

2 Once you’ve determined just how much stuff you’ll have to organize, it’s time to consider

what systems will best fit your space and needs. A do-it-yourself closet orga-nizer product is affordable, easy to install and adjustable, making it simple to create a customized design. Accessories, such as drawers and shoe shelves, help per-sonalize the space, while fabric bins are perfect for storing handbags and other smaller items.

3 Before you decide exactly which pieces you need, sketch out your plan on paper or use

an online design tool. ClosetMaid’s DIY Design Tool even provides a parts list to

help ensure you buy the right pieces for your design. You may also find it helpful to make a categorized list of all of the items you need to store and mark them off as you identify the right storage products for your space.

4 Once you install your new sys-tem, the fun really begins. Start by hanging as much as possible;

this makes it easier to see what you have. Group and place like things together by category, such as pants, skirts and tops. Then within each category, group by sea-son and by color. Take advantage of prime real estate by positioning the things you wear most often in the place that is most accessible and easiest to reach. Source: Family Features

I t’s that time of year

when you think about

getting organized for

a fresh new start. But how

many times have you thought

about finally clearing out your

closet, decided it’s just too

overwhelming, and simply shut

the door only to think about it

5 Once you have everything hung and stored in its proper place, congratulate yourself on having

the closet makeover checked off your list. However, to continue enjoying your newfound organization, you must be vigi-lant about keeping the space organized. Have a plan in mind when you purchase new things. Ask yourself if you really need the item and determine what you can dis-card to make room.

Q: MY CHILD IS INTERESTED IN STARTING TO PLAY

ON A SPORTS TEAM. ARE THERE ANY PRECAUTIONARY STEPS I NEED TO TAKE BEFORE I LET HIM GET INVOLVED?

Prior to participating in any physical ac-tivity program, it’s important to have your child evaluated by a physician. Certain conditions may affect your child’s physi-cal activity program. A doctor may need to clear your child to play sports if he has a history of asthma, heart problems, previ-ous injuries that haven’t healed properly, pre-existing medical conditions or is over-weight or obese.

Q: HOW SHOULD I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE

FOR INCREASED PHYSICAL ACTIVITY?

The most important step is to establish a pattern or regular, daily physical activ-ity. Parents should strive for having their children engage in 60 minutes of activity every day. This includes free play, which is a great way to keep kids active and fit. If a parent has special concerns about a

child’s fitness for increased activity, such as concern over a previous injury, not having done much activity before or be-ing overweight, the parent should consult with a sports medicine or fitness profes-sional to come up with an age-appropriate conditioning program that can be done at home.

Q: TEMPERATURES IN HOUSTON CAN BE QUITE

SPORADIC. CAN MY CHILD STILL RUN OR PLAY SPORTS OUTSIDE EVEN WHEN THE TEMPERATURES INCREASE OR DECREASE DRAMATICALLY?

Most children can play in hot, humid conditions if precautions are taken. Dur-ing a heat wave, limit the amount of time spent outside and check on the condition of the child about every 15 to 30 minutes.

It is extremely important to ensure that your child is adequately hydrated. While sports drinks are appropriate for exercise longer than an hour and during hard train-ing, the best hydration fluid is water. En-courage your child to start drinking more water and save the sports drinks for during or after exercise, as they add little value in their lunch box or at meal times. Risk fac-tors for heat illness include fatigue, illness and even a sore throat. Make sure your children get plenty of rest, and they should not exercise in the heat if they are sick.

Q: SHOULD MY CHILD’S DIET CHANGE WHEN HE

STARTS TO TRAIN FOR A RUN OR PLAYS SPORTS?

Proper nutrition is essential to the health and wellbeing of children all of the time but especially when it comes to their success in sports. Balance is important. A young athlete’s diet should have plenty of

Whether you’re participating in a fam-ily-friendly walk or run or are the quarter-back of the high school football team, training is key. There are simple tips that everyone can use to make physical activ-ity fun and safe for the entire family.

complex carbohydrates for energy, plenty of protein for muscle building and enough fat to stay healthy.

Eating the right foods at the right time, such as lean meats and whole grains, can help provide the sustained energy during exercise and promote the recovery mus-cles need after strenuous exercise. Ask a sports dietitian, sports medicine specialist or fitness professional about your child’s dietary needs.

Q: OUR FAMILY IS GEARING UP FOR AN UPCOMING

RUN. WHAT ARE SOME TIPS TO HELP US PREPARE?

Whether you’re running long distanc-es or training for an upcoming season of baseball, here are some easy-to-follow tips to help you prepare:

• Get a safe start to your running train-ing program. Avoid running in extreme temperatures.

• Wear white clothing or a reflector badge on your shirt to make sure drivers can see you.

• Lace up in proper running shoes and gear so your feet are comfortable and supported.

• Warm up and cool down with walking and good stretching.

• Drink even when you’re not thirsty. Your body loses fluid when you run or sweat.

• Balance your diet with fruits, vegeta-bles, whole grain, lean protein and dairy.

• Get eight or more hours of sleep so that you’re rested and ready to go every day.

• Try various types of exercise. This will give you extra strength and endurance.
