READER FEEDBACK

Associate Publisher, LARA BELL

I enjoy reading absolutely! Katy because it keeps me in the know about my area.

Sarah Fornea

If your kids are not out of school yet, then this first week of June is it! Your running shoes have been on tight with year-end parties, graduation and things to do. Hopefully, once the last school bell rings, you’ll be able to unlace your shoes and start to enjoy the lazy days of summer.

This issue is our dads and brides issue. I love June! Our cover story features six well-known Katy dads who are family men at the core and love their community. As most know, my dad, Bryan Bell, and my brother, Pete Bell, live in Katy. Pete is a great dad to my sweet niece and nephew, Bailey and Hunter. So, a special Happy Father’s Day goes out to them!

Also in June, you’ll meet several brides. My hus-band laughs at me, because I sometimes read the wedding announcements in the paper. Who doesn’t love reading about people in love who are starting their life together?

Have a great June, and Happy Father’s Day to all of the dads out there. Con-gratulations to all of the grads as well! Finally, we are hosting an event at Val-lone’s on June 10th at 6:30 pm with seven-time Cy Young Award winner and base-ball great Roger Clemens for dads, grads, sons and really anyone who wants to attend. For ticket information, email [email protected]. Hope to see you there!

Absolutely! yours,

AmazingKaty Dads

COVER STORY

By Lara Bell

W e are fortunate to have so many dads in Katy who are doing amazing things! So, we asked you – the readers – to

nominate the dads you love and appreciate, and here are some of our absolute favorites. First, let me congratulate my brother, Pete Bell, who is an awesome Katy dad to my nephew Hunter and niece Bailey. Great job Katy dads!

Skylar Bean is 15 years-old and loves her dad! She has a little brother named Gage who is 13 and a little sister, Logan, who is

nine. “There are many reasons we love our dad, but most important is he is always there for us,” said Skylar.

The Bean family especially enjoys traveling together. Last summer, Scott and Gage traveled to Cooperstown, New York and had a really great time. They also went to Seaside, Florida for two weeks, went swimming and just had fun as a family. Something many people do not know about Scott is he loves to take his girls to get their nails done – really!

When a daughter is born, you can expect lots of Barbies, hair ties, Disney Princess movies and dance recitals. So, four daughters brings

all of that multiplied, plus a little craziness. It takes a real-life Superman to be a father to four girls, and that is exactly who Robbie Collins is.

“Growing up, he never complained about having to sit through every Disney Princess movie we just had to watch. He even sang along too!” Katie Collins said. “We might not have been on the football field making touchdowns, but we are right by his side cheering and screaming, because our love for football came from him. And whenever Mom was out of town, he perfected the ‘perfect ponytail.’”

Robbie shows his unconditional love for his wife and daughters every single day. When Robbie’s daughters shopped for their perfect prom dresses, he sat outside the department store dressing room with a smile on his face as they tried on 17 dresses. “He is the perfect example of the man we want as our husbands,” Katie said. “Now, we are all grown and starting families of our own. He is just as amaz-ing being ‘Pawpaw’ to his grandchildren as he is a father to us.”

Dr. Danny Phillips has been a Licensed Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP) for 15 years. Currently, he is at Woleman and

Winborn Elementary schools during the day in Katy, and in the evenings, he is at his private practice in Cinco Ranch, specializing in Asperger’s Syndrome and working with au-tistic kids since 2008. Every other Saturday, you can find Danny doing equine therapy with autistic kids at Five Hors-es Ranch.

Danny and his family are members of Second Baptist Church in Katy, making sure the family has a good Chris-tian foundation. Danny’s free moments are spent with his family, striving to be the best dad he can be. “He is such an amazing dad, loves Alabama football, fishing, the beach and taking us on adventures. He is a great family man, and ev-eryone loves him,” said his wife, Starla.

Danny likes to spend time teaching his kids new things, like about how food grows by planting a vegetable garden, respecting animals and how to make a difference in this world by recycling and taking care of the planet. “He never complains about being sleep deprived and makes every mo-ment with us count,” Starla said. “His whole life is about helping kids be the best they can be and being a Christian role model for our kids as well. We are blessed to have him and thankful for all that he does for our family. He definitely has made ‘Dad of the Year’ in our book!”

Alyssa, Bret, Danny, Daniel and Starla Phillips.

Hadley, age three, describes her dad as a great dad because, “He takes care of me.” Scotty, age five, said, “He does a lot of things

with me.” These are very true statements, but there is so much more to the story.

Like most dads, Scott works long hours and only gets a few hours in the evenings to spend with his kids, at least until the weekends, and he always makes those hours count. He fed them as babies, gave them baths and changed their diapers. There is nothing he won’t help do!

Scott is involved. He assists in coaching Scotty’s baseball team and has spent countless hours teaching, playing and practicing with him. Scott does his best to never miss games, dance recitals or special events at school, especially if the kids ask for his involvement. Scott never says no.

As a trustworthy and accountable father, Scott teaches his children to be the same. The kids trust their dad. If Scott says he is taking them for ice cream, they know he will. These things may seem very small, but they mean so much to the kids. He hopes that as adults, his children will treat others the same.

Scott is a loving, Christian dad, and his family feels blessed to have him. The Zuehlke family is proud to call Katy their home and couldn’t imagine raising their children in any other place!

Jake Hallsted is the wonderful man Shawn Hallsted married al-

most six years ago with the blessing of their six children. He has a daughter and two sons, and so does Shawn. They have all worked together to help create an amazing family who truly supports one another and loves being together.

Since they married, both of their daughters and one of Jake’s sons have married. Jake and Shawn now have four granddaughters and two grand-sons. “The family has grown so much in such a short period of time. This is such a gift to us,” said Shawn.

Jake’s influence in the lives of his children and their spouses runs deep-ly. “In the words of Clarence B. Kel-land, ‘My father doesn’t tell me how to live; he lives and lets me watch him do it,’” said Dustin Hallsted.

Jake’s daughter Kelley Hardin ex-plained, “My dad is one of the kindest men I’ve ever known. He has changed so many lives through his generosity and love throughout our community.” His son-in-law Heath Hardin said, “Jake has set the bar high as a father-in-law. He is full of love and giving back to his family and community. He is all I could ask for in a second father figure.”

“I truly look up to my dad for his support of our family and continuing support of my education and my ca-reer. I admire his work in the commu-nity and the love of our family and how he is always giving back. I am beyond proud and honored to be his son,” said Ryan Hallsted.

“I could not have asked for a better stepdad for our family and husband for our mom,” said Rollie McGinnis. “Jake is one of the most supportive, under-standing, driven, loving people I know. He is one of my best friends and makes the world around him a better place. I’m extremely grateful for Jake being an integral part of our lives.”

281-394-5162absolutely! Katy Magazine salutes and congratulates all Katy dads who help make Katy a special community to raise a family. Happy Father’s Day!

Cooper Wade is not only a great husband and father of four to his

two stepsons, Tyler and Troy, his son, Cooper, and his daughter, Anna, who has cerebral palsy, but he is also a mu-sician and little league coach. Cooper plays at benefit concerts for those who have illnesses and helps raise funds in addition to playing at his regular gigs, at church and at his kids’ schools.

Cooper helps get his kids ready and off to school in the mornings. He loves coaching little league football and baseball, as well as spending time with his kids and helping them learn the basics of the sport. He has a kind heart and picks up other kids to take them to practices and games.

Cooper also creates inspiring “Wor-ship Wednesday” videos. He is teaching his boys to become good men. Cooper educates people about cerebral palsy, but above all, he loves his daughter to the moon and back and treats her just like any other teen. With all of this, he still has an eight to five job, and after any show, no matter how late, he will always make it to his kids’ events.

Meet Jeremiah Coholich

By Joan Frances

James Edgar Taylor High School in Katy Independent School District is home to over 3,000

students. The school’s motto is “Tay-lor Made for Success.” In addition to academics, students can have a well-rounded curriculum by engaging in the arts, theater, clubs, organizations and sports. One senior who has accom-plished his goals and is ready to write the next chapter of his life is Jeremiah Coholich.

Jeremiah was a member of the swim team all four years of his high school career. He was a member of the Junior Varsity team as a freshman and sophomore and a Varsity swim-mer as a junior and senior. Jeremiah’s favorite stroke is the individual med-ley, which is actually all four strokes – butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle – swam in that order.

Being on the swim team takes disci-pline and hard work. Jeremiah begins his day at 5 am to swim for two hours and then goes to school. Swimming is a source of exercise built into his school day that helps relieve stress and en-force discipline. Participating as a part of the swim team was the highlight of Jeremiah’s high school experience. “Being a part of a somewhat exclusive,

extremely dedicated group of people with their own parties and events is very ex-citing,” Jeremiah said. “Swimming has given me a lot of discipline, and I enjoy using my experience teaching kids how to swim.” He was selected by the Texas High School Coaches Association for the Academic All-State Elite Team and competed in the University Interscholas-tic League (UIL). He also competes in a sprint distance triathlon for high school athletes every spring.

Academically, Jeremiah is a member of the National Honor Society and Span-ish Honor Society. He is the Senior Class Vice President and attended the Katy ISD Student Leadership Conference as a junior and senior. In 2014, he was a delegate to the state convention for the Texas Association of Student Councils. As a junior and senior, Jeremiah was a member of UIL Science Academics, com-peting within the state of Texas in biolo-gy, chemistry and physics. He placed first in overall scores at the Needville High School UIL Invitational as a junior and second overall with a top score in physics at the 2015 tournament. Jeremiah also qualified for Regionals and placed first overall at the District 19-5A Conference this year.

Jeremiah’s favorite teacher is Tracey Jensen, his calculus instructor. “She

teaches her class in a way that pre-pares us for college. We learn the ma-terial at home and come to class and work problems together. I also just re-ally like calculus.” When asked what value he lives by, Jeremiah said, “I be-lieve it is what you do every day that matters the most in terms of happi-ness and achievement. If you put time toward your long-term goals every day, you will achieve them.”

Jeremiah has achieved respect and recognition for all of his hard work. He was selected as a National Merit Fi-nalist by the National Merit Scholar-ship Corporation for scoring highly on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT). He also received the Ad-vanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor award by scoring a 5 on four AP exams. As a junior, he earned the Cer-tificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement in AP U.S. History. Even with a busy schedule, Jeremiah earned the Mustangs Volunteering Proudly award by completing 60 volunteer hours.

Jeremiah will likely attend college at the University of Texas at Austin and major in Mechanical Engineering. Congratulations on your compassion and drive, and good luck as you con-tinue to find your place.

BUSINESSBRIEFS

The Katy Area Economic Develop-ment Council recently announced that Katy is well positioned to thrive due to strong economic diversification as the oil industry continues to contract.

“Katy has kept pace with the Greater Houston metro in terms of economic di-versification,” said Lance LaCour, presi-dent and CEO of the Katy Area Eco-nomic Development Council. Between 2013 and 2014, the Katy area added nearly 5,000 new jobs in the engineer-ing, accounting and research industries. Coupled with strong growth in the ser-vices industry over the same time period and attractive, new Class A office space coming online this year for prospective employers, the overall outlook is far from bleak.

The Katy Ranch project, a six-story, 151,000 square-foot office building situ-ated along the Katy Freeway, and the three-story, 128,000 square-foot Mason Office Creek II provide impressive op-tions for employers in the tech and fi-nancial services space and other thriving industries. U.S. Silica, one of the largest domestic producers of commercial sili-ca, recently leased 17,464 square feet at the Katy Ranch Phase I office building. Michael Baker International, a survey and civil engineering firm, also recently committed to the Katy area.

“Our community has put in tremen-dous effort over the past several de-cades to both diversify our economy in a way that is complementary but not dependent on the oil and gas industry, as well as create incentives through low taxes, affordable business space and the highest quality of life in the United States today, which has resulted in our region becoming an absolute magnet for employers,” said LaCour.

“Technology is nothing. What’s important is that you have faith in people, that they’re basically good

Tips for DivorcedParents and a Child

Summer possession and access can be a chal-lenge for a child of divorced parents due to

the amount of time a child is away from the other parent. It’s important that parents allow a child the freedom to communicate with the other parent during these times. This does not condone the situ-ation where a parent is constantly calling or texting a child during periods of possession with the other parent. That behavior is wrong and invasive.

Consider the following language that can be included in a court order to optimize communica-tion between a parent and a child:

Electronic communication can include com-munication facilitated by the use of a tele-phone, email, instant messaging or Skype.

Provide that the party not in possession of a child can have electronic communication with a child per the following terms: the

party not in possession of a child can contact the child between the hours of – for example – 6 pm and 8 pm, and the parent in possession should make the child available to talk during those hours. If the child is unavailable to talk during those hours, the party in possession shall have the child return the call to the other parent within two hours of the missed call.

Language can be included that the parent in possession provides/notifies the other parent within 24 hours of a change for a

cell phone number, e-mail address[es] and other electronic communication access to the child.

Further language can be included that if electronic equipment is available, the child should be afforded the same privacy,

respect and dignity accorded all other forms of access.

Each parent should encourage and help fa-cilitate, not impede or frustrate, the right of a child to contact the parent not in possession

of the child if the child desires.

MEDICALFOCUS

In movies, it’s easy to identify emer-gencies. They come in the form of hor-rendous car wrecks, dramatic heart at-tacks or suspenseful near drownings. While these scenarios occur in real life, most situations that require medical care are not as clear. It’s important to under-stand which symptoms warrant a trip to the hospital or a Houston Methodist Emergency Care Center.

While playing sports, chances of in-jury are higher, but not all cases require a trip to the emergency room. Sprains can generally be treated at home, but a bro-ken bone or compound fracture needs to be treated at an emergency care facility. After experiencing a mild concussion, a follow-up visit with the doctor is recom-mended, but immediate care is not re-quired unless the concussion is severe.

It’s important to seek immediate medical attention if a fever reaches 104 degrees or higher in a person undergo-ing chemotherapy or if a person has trouble breathing, experiences changes in behavior or neck stiffness. Fevers in babies younger than three months and the elderly should also be treated right away.

Chest pain is the most common heart attack symptom for both men and wom-en. Unless the pressure is heartburn, it is necessary to visit to the hospital right away. In the case of a stroke, immedi-ately call 911, and do not drive. Every minute counts when a stroke occurs. This summer, be mindful of heatstroke, as it warrants immediate medical atten-tion as well.

At Houston Methodist Cinco Ranch Emergency Care Center, on-site, board-certified doctors and trained nurses and staff treat patients of all ages with any medical condition. For more information, visit houstonmethodist.org/ER or call 832-522-6070.
