the right Fuel for exercise

When it comes to exercise, food and water are just as important as the right equip-ment. “Food is your inner equipment,” says Leslie Bonci, Director of Sports Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Cen-ter. Two common mistakes are not eating enough — or eating too much— before a

Also of note is that people who ate a heart-healthy diet including olive oil had a lower risk of depression.

This may point to benefits that can be de-rived from the oft-touted Mediterranean diet, which incorporates olive oil, lots of fruits and vegetables, and low to moderate wine intake.

WebMD offers these tips on easing depres-sion through diet:

Eat a diet high in nutrients to boost your body’s functioning and overall health. Fill your plate with foods that contain essen-tial antioxidants such as beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, to fight the effects of damaging free radicals. Eat smart carbs such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables for a calming effect. Eat protein-rich foods to boost alertness. Get plenty of Vitamin D, which increases levels of the feel-good hor-mone serotonin in the brain.

workout. If you don’t have enough fuel you’ll be more tired, weaker and slower. Eat too much and you’ll be uncomfortable. Wait at least an hour after eating before you work out, and include protein and a complex car-bohydrate with each meal or snack.

the Food-Mood Connection

Feeling depressed? Take a closer look at your diet. A recent study found that consump-tion of trans fats, known to be bad for the heart, may also raise your risk for depression. Trans fats carry with them a well-earned bad reputation, as they simultaneously raise bad (LDL) cholesterol and lower good (HDL) cho-lesterol. That leaves you at an increased risk for heart disease, the number-one killer of men and women in America.

These unsavory fats are often found in fast food and commercial baked goods, though in recent years, publicity over their negative health effects has resulted in an overall re-duction in their use.

Still, from the drive-through to the snack-food aisle, trans fats continue to crop up in many foods on the market. It’s enough to make you think twice about what you con-sider comfort food.

The new findings linking depression to trans fats found that study participants who con-sumed the most trans fats had up to a 48% higher risk of depression than those who consumed the least.

LIBRARYnew titles at the Library

“LAKe OF dreAMs: A nOVeL” by Kim ed-wards. Author of the best selling “Memory Keeper’s Daughter.” Returning from Japan, Lucy still finds herself haunted by her father’s unresolved death a decade ago. A love affair with a glass artist leads to the unexpected when she discovers a locked window seat that reveals her family’s complex past thus begins her quest for the truth.

“BetWeen WAr And PeACe: HOW AMerI-CA ends Its WArs” edited by Col. Matthew Moten. Featuring groundbreaking work from some of our finest historians, the author offers an examination of America’s exit strategies in conflicts ranging from the American Revolu-tion to the Gulf War. In contrast, it examines one of the most perplexing issues confront-ing the Obama Administration: how to end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which the U.S. entered into with no clear exit strategies.

“seCret sOLdIer” by Alex Berenson. Wells

discovers that he may have left the CIA, but the job follows him. After a call for help from King Abdullah, the aged monarch of Saudi Arabia, he reluctantly, and with the secret blessing of the CIA, goes undercover. He un-covers a conspiracy that makes him unsure of who to trust.

“FALLOUt: tHe trUe stOry OF tHe CIA’s seCret WAr On nUCLeAr trAFFICKInG” by Catherine Collins & douglas Frantz. In 2008, millions of sensitive documents being stored in a secret Swiss facility were destroyed. Although the Swiss government announced that the action was taken in the interest of world safety, Frantz and Collins discovered that it was much more insidious. In reality, it was to cover up a major CIA failure which now leaves us vulnerable to nuclear terrorism.

“deeP BLACK: deAtH WAVe” by stephen Coonts & William H. Keith. The Canary Is-lands, a vacation destination for millionaires, has a fault line running underneath it. An al-liance between radical Islamic terrorists and

a rogue element of the Chinese government plan to use it to unleash an act of unimagina-ble geological terrorism - unless Charlie Dean and his top secret special operatives can stop them. If they fail, the U.S. East Coast could be devastated.

“I sHALL nOt HAte: A GAZA dOCtOr’s JOUrney On tHe rOAd tO PeACe And HUMAn dIGnIty” by Izzeldin Abuelaish. Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish was one of the few Ga-zans with a permit to enter Israel because of his work. He treated both Israelis and Palestin-ians. Then, in 2009, Israeli shells hit his home in the Gaza Strip killing three of his daughters and his niece. But instead of seeking revenge or sinking into hatred, he called for people to start talking to each other.

How you Can Help yourselfand VA

The claims process doesn’t need to be a has-sle. Here is what you can do to help yourself and VA:

1. Communicate, communicate, communicate!

2. Appoint a representative. While there are attorneys who will represent you for a fee, it is rarely necessary to pay to have your claim processed efficiently and successfully. National service organizations such as the Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of For-eign Wars, American Legion, Vietnam Veter-ans of America, Paralyzed Veterans of Amer-ica, as well as State Departments of Veterans Affairs or Veterans Commissions and county veteran service officers can give excellent assistance and it’s free. Call your local VA re-gional office to see what organizations are available in your area.

3. Consider what you want to claim. Many service members and Veterans have been told they should go through their service medical records and claim everything they have ever had or been treated for. While you can do that, it is likely to significantly in-

5. Show up for your examinations.

6. The first thing you will get from VA once you file your claim is a lengthy letter com-monly referred to as a “VCAA letter.” This is a letter required by the law that tells you what they will do, what you will be expected to do, and in very general terms tell you how they will decide. The letter may also include spe-cific requests from your local regional office for information. Read it carefully for specific requests for information from them. Finally, the letter offers the option of completing an attachment telling them you have no more information. If that is the case, complete the form and return it immediately. If you don’t and you have no more information, they will wait for 30 days before proceeding for no good reason. Even if during the course of working the claim you do receive additional information you can always submit it later.

7. When you receive a decision, read it care-fully. It will have the text of the actual rating decision attached to it explaining why they decided what they did. If you think the VA decision didn’t consider something, didn’t cover a topic, or is wrong, call your represen-tative right away. If they have made a mis-take they would rather just fix it now than get involved in a lengthy appeal that isn’t terribly satisfying for you or VA.

Final Note: VA exists to serve those who served and their survivors. If the VA is not clear or you think they have made a mistake, let them know so they can both fix it and provide a learning opportunity for their staff to serve other Veterans better.

crease your frustration level, result in unnec-essary examinations, and slow the process without getting added benefits. You should not claim acute disabilities or illnesses you had in service unless they left a residual. For example, if you contracted the flu in service the claim will be denied. On the other hand if you broke your leg and recovered from it you should claim that because the fracture, if found on x-ray, can be service connected. While it might only warrant a zero percent evaluation now if you develop arthritis at the site later you are covered. Don’t claim things like baldness or the fact that you wear glass-es because they are considered “constitu-tional or developmental abnormalities” that you would have developed whether or not you were in service. The law doesn’t permit payment for these. Don’t claim lab results like hematuria (blood in the urine) or high cholesterol. They don’t pay for those either.

4. If private providers have treated you, ob-tain the records and send them to the VA. While the application you fill out does offer the opportunity to sign a release and the VA will request the records for you, they cannot compel providers to send the VA records nor can they pay for them.
